SOFIA
The bus rolled towards what I believed was my impending doom. My new home for the unforeseeable future.
A prison for wild beasts and creatures.
The massive structure loomed ahead, green ivy covered over the grey stone walls, the tiny windows had bars over them. This looked like something right out of a horror movie. The place was high-walled, barricaded by barbed wire that was laced with enchanted spells which weren’t easy for creatures to breakthrough.
Goosebumps rose over my flesh as I wondered what was going to happen to me once I was locked inside that prison. The rumors about this place were enough to give anyone nightmares.
Dark Water prison was known for holding some of the most dangerous and ruthless prisoners around the world, including but not limited to convicted Dragons, Werewolves, Shapeshifters, Vampires, and Witches.
Worst of all, I was sentenced to ten years in that place.
I didn’t know how I was going to survive for two minutes let alone ten years.
I would mind my own business and keep my head down. No matter what anyone said to me, I wasn’t going to react to anybody.
There was news that they had captured an Alpha with a notorious reputation for being one of the most wanted criminals in the world of creatures. He seemed to be causing trouble inside the prison, and I remembered reading in the newspaper about him and thinking to myself how bad it would be to live in that place. The irony of that situation was hilarious because a month later, I ended up there.
I would make some trustworthy friends and try to stay out of the savage crowd. Rumor has it that women and men were all kept together.
This was one of the worst places I could have ended up in.
The bus passed through huge iron gates and the only sound inside the bus was the clanking of the chains and the handcuffs around our wrists and legs.
I glanced around myself and noticed three other inmates riding in the bus with me. A creature sat in the front seat, her hair was long, fair as snow, and pointy elongated ears showing through her hair. She also possessed wings, intricate and beautiful as she was. Sensing something, she turned in her seat to look at me.
I couldn’t help but stare at her. Those were a pair of prettiest grey eyes I’d ever seen. There was just something about her that one couldn’t help but feel mesmerized by.
A snap of fingers broke the trance.
“Don’t stare at her.” A voice warned from the seat behind me.
I spun halfway around to look at a girl who seemed to be of my age, early twenties. A she-wolf no doubt. I wondered what her story was.
“She traps people in her snare.” She elaborated, “That’s what fae fairies are good at. Inside the prison, her mind games won’t work but out here, I can’t say much. I’m Danny by the way. You’re the Russian vampire who stole blood bags from the hospital you worked at, right? Pleased to meet you.”
“Same here, I guess? What did you do?” I blurted out.
“Oh, I wiped out a group of werewolf hunters.” She said casually like she’d just dropped a few biscuits in her tea.
I could smell the blood on her and if I touched her, I was positive I’d see whatever that she’d done.
My gaze fell on the other members of the bus ride.
She sensed my question. “That tall guy in the back is Jake. He’s a giant.”
“His head is almost touching the roof of the bus,” I whispered.
She laughed as if we were in some conspiracy together, besties for life.
Jake was super tall and no wonder it was because of his troll genes. Rough features, big body, large hands that could punch through a wall without any problem. He fixed me with a cold stare that had me turning to face the front.
“So, what did he do?” I asked.
“He crushed a man below his feet and he believes it was a mistake, I mean that’s what I heard. Jake had just walked out to buy food and didn’t see the man until it was too late.”
The bus suddenly came to a halt and the automatic doors opened.
A man in a blue uniform climbed the bus. Green and silver scales covered half of his face. His yellow snake eyes rested on me, an evil smile stretching his lips.
“He’s a shapeshifter, don’t look into his eyes,” Danny told me.
“Alright inmates, welcome to Dark Water Prison. Line up outside.”
The minute I stepped out of the bus and heard the sounds of rowdy dangerous creatures surrounding me, I wished I’d gone back to yesterday and never stolen those blood-bags no matter how tempting it had been.
I would rather starve to death.
Uneasiness crept inside me so I looked up only to stare straight at a shirtless inmate inside a cell looking straight at me with unnerving interest. He had dark hair, mesmerizing golden eyes, and a strong chiseled jawline.
My breath hitched in my throat as I felt the intensity he was staring at me with.
And then something happened, he blinked and with an unseen force, I dropped down on my knees onto the floor.
It struck me as sure as a bolt of lightning.
He was undoubtedly the notorious Alpha.
I could hear his words whisper into my ear.
You’ll be mine soon.
SOFIA I don’t think there’s anything worse that could happen to me. Catching the Alpha’s eye was the last thing on my to-do list but it seemed like I’d unknowingly caught his attention. Being born a vampire, I’d learned to be tough but when it came to some creatures of the night, they wanted you for very different reasons. Although I didn’t know what the alpha’s agenda was, his voice had echoed those words into my ear making his intentions very clear. You’ll be mine soon… His voice had a deep baritone, commanding and tempting all the same. He wasn’t just making fun of me. He knew what he wanted and the fact that he addressed me directly was terrifying. Vampires were known to be cunning creatures of the night, they were fast, powerful, and fought an undeniable bloodlust which was a curse. Among all the other creatures, sex with a vampire was the most tempting prospect to any of them. The feelings were heightened, the pleasures were a dozen times better and it was something that
SOFIA My jaw should have been on the floor but I composed myself quickly. Danny laughed because clearly she thought this was a joke. “Do you think this is funny, inmate?” He sneered. “Do you want to be fucked by the Giant dick?” She shut her mouth and looked down. The patterns on the floor were suddenly very interesting. He sniggered, “that’s what I thought.” “That is not allowed here.” Those were the first five words that I’d heard come out of Jake’s mouth, and I’d thought he might have been mute. “I make the goddamn rules here and if I say I want to watch a fairy getting fucked by a giant, that’s what I’m gonna watch. You will perform for me if you don’t want solitary confinement in a cell so small you can’t stand up to take a piss.” The guard looked at Celeste. “You want to have your wings clipped off?” She was the first to start walking towards Jake who went still when he realized what was about to happen. He swallowed, you could see the fear in his eyes, and a cloud of
SOFIA “If you think I will agree to something like that then you’re sadly mistaken. I don’t need a male creature in order to survive.” “Miss. Volkov, you do not understand the seriousness of this situation. These creatures are savage, they do not possess a modicum of sympathy. Being alone out there is the same as walking into a group of blood-sucking vampires. No offense.” “None taken.” “With the protection of the strongest creatures, you wouldn’t have to worry about survival.” “And that comes with a price of giving myself over to some male creature that I don’t even know. What if he’s a serial killer?” “Everybody inside this prison has done atrocious crimes. One is not better than the other.” And that should make me feel better? “How is sleeping with someone for protection better than being on my own?” “I’ll give you a small example. There was a Shewolf here before, she was sentenced for petty crimes. You remind me a lot of her. Just like you, she refused the Protection.” I
SOFIAThe words kept haunting my mind. The Alpha wants to see you right now.I didn’t need to see anybody. If he was the Alpha, it meant something to his pack of dogs, but I wasn’t part of it. This was a prison and everyone was equal here.I wasn’t sure if that was true or if I was trying to convince myself of lies. There were inmates here who were far more superior than the others. Creatures with the power to run the show, to dominate, and demand submission.Unfortunately, it seemed like the Alpha possessed that power.I walked out of the shower hastily coming face to face with a dozen other male creatures who stood naked. Some of them were putting on their uniforms, others leering at me. Their thoughts were completely transparent.I just need a piece of her.Wonder if she would accept me as her protector. That ass is hot! I want to be the one to fuck her! Will it be dangerous to have sex with a vampire?I tuned them out and went to the locker where a clean pair of uniform was waitin
SOFIA There were three powerful wolves standing here in front of me with identical mocking looks on their faces. They could tear me limb to limb easily and think nothing of it. They were as massive as the Alpha but it was clear who ran the show here.If I didn’t know better, it looked like high school bullying.“You’ll get your clothes back if you answer my questions.”Where the fuck were the guards?“I was born in Russia.”Minion One on the right-hand side decided to open his mouth, “I heard that in Russia, you drink Vodka instead of water. Is that true?” he asked in a very bad Russian accent. They all sniggered.“I’m Maverick, I’m the Alpha of the Crimson Moon Pack. I’ve come here to make an offer to you.”Crimson Moon Pack. So fucking lame. His jaw twitched. Was there any chance he could hear my thoughts? I’d have to be careful. I needed to build a wall to protect what I was thinking.“What offer?”I was going to deny whatever spewed next from his mouth.“You need protection in th
SOFIA Inside my cell, I carved a line next to the one I’d drawn yesterday. It was currently day two.My stomach growled loudly indicating that I needed to put some food inside my system ASAP.Vampires, especially those who starve or don’t get enough blood in their system, slowly grow weak and die, but not before going on a rampage filled with blood-lust so potent, you would rather take a stake to your heart. If I didn’t get to feed, I would go into a similar state where I wouldn’t be someone, but something. The thought brought chills to my body. When I was done with the shower, we were taken into the lunch cafeteria which looked equally depressing. It smelled of sweat, urine, stale food, and basically your worst nightmare. Tables were crammed with different creatures. The whole place looked nasty. I didn’t want to be here much less eat but it’s not like I had any other choice. They all turned when they saw me walk inside. There was a huge crowd near the food counters. Each inmate had
SOFIAI stared at the incubus. He couldn’t be serious.“You want me to give you a few years of my life in exchange for your protection, is that what you’re saying?”“I will give you my protection in exchange for sex. If you want to escape this prison, that comes with a higher price which is a few years of your life.”“Define few years.”Incubuses couldn’t be trusted, and especially not sweet-talking, good-looking ones like Brax.“A hundred years.”I snorted. “That’s a few?”He smiled, “You’re immortal. What does it matter if it’s hundred or a hundred and fifty?”“Why should I trust you? For all I know, you could be lying to me. Your kind is not particularly famous for being honest. This might be your ploy into stealing some of my years.”“I could have cheated you out of it but I didn’t because I’m looking for teamwork. The other males here, they need slaves. You’ll have all the freedom you want with me, Sofia.” He stared straight into my eyes, his gaze unwavering.“If you can escape p
SOFIAI shut the lid of the toilet seat and sat down on it, hoping the guard would leave. I didn’t want to get into trouble for being caught with Maverick.“Who was here with you?” The guard asked him.“No one.”“You don’t want to lie to me, inmate.”“I’m not lying. I think you heard someone from the toilets on the other side. Maybe you should check there.”The sound of the footsteps began to fade away. I sagged in relief.“You can come out now.”I opened the door slowly and peeked out to make sure no one was lingering around.“So where were we?” He teased me; the corners of his mouth turned up.“Let’s forget that it ever happened.”I wanted to forget that I was momentarily distracted and was extremely turned on by the Alpha’s words. I couldn’t help as my eyes moved over his body. He was tall, maybe six feet three, all hard and smooth muscles. Thick arms and even thicker hands. An image flashed inside my head, a filthy one with Maverick’s large hot, and needy body covering mine and fu
SOFIAThe blood drained from my face when I heard him say that. It’s like he’d hit me with tons of bricks or threw ice water on my face. Take a pick.“You can’t be serious about this. How do you expect me to sleep with someone just to remove the werewolf’s scent?”Dimitri folded his arms across his chest. “I don’t think we have any other option, Sofia. It’s either that or father will have you assassinated in the house.”“I can’t! Dimitri…”“It is the only way.” He insisted, fire blazing in his eyes. He hated this as much as I did but my brother was powerless when it came to father. “I have already lost my mother because of our father’s temper. I don’t want to lose my sister too. Do you understand what I’m saying?”“But…I already have someone I love. I can’t sleep with someone else.”He came to sit beside me, staring into my eyes, “Is the Alpha alive?”My mind flashed back to the car ride from the prison and the sound of the gunshot. I clenched the bedsheet in my fists, tears streaming
SOFIAAfter the king had lashed out at me, he refused to speak a word. He wanted me gone, and I was glad to oblige. I wasn’t very keen on having the conversation either. As I climbed the stairs to my floor, I could still hear my father screaming at the top of his lungs.“This is unacceptable! She slept with a werewolf! A lycan.” He screeched. “There’s no going back from there.”“Father, it’s okay. As soon as she marries Prince Ivan, everything will go back to normal.” I could hear Dimitri trying to defuse the situation. As much as he hated that I’d slept with her werewolf, he was still on my side. Dimitri tried his best to help me out in the situation.“Son, she bears the mark of the Alpha!”“Yes, I know, but if I explain the situation to Ivan, he’ll understand.”“You should have just finished her when you had her released from prison, would have saved me from the shame.”“I don’t think that is necessary.”“Find a way to get rid of the mark!” The king bellows.“Don’t worry, your majest
SOFIAI stared at my neatly folded prison uniform lying on the bed. It was easier to pretend like I wasn’t leaving. That was the bitter truth I couldn’t run from.We stayed in a bubble for the last few hours. Maverick pulled me on top of him and made me ride him, and while he pumped into me, he let me marvel at his face and hold him. I didn’t even realize when tears began streaming down my cheeks; it was only when he wiped them I realized I’d been crying. He hadn’t said he loved me back and I guess it was okay because these were my feelings; he wasn’t obligated to return them. It would have been nice if he felt the same way, but when I was moved to his cell, he’d been clear that he only wanted a woman to warm his bed and that’s the only reason he was attracted to me.So, I didn’t have a reason to feel so anxious and yet I felt like I couldn’t breathe. He was going to sign the papers confirming that he’d successfully completed his duties as my protector, which also meant that Maverick
SOFIAWhy am I being released from prison?”Typically, if a prisoner was told that they were going to be released from prison, they wouldn’t bother questioning further. Not me. I had another prison waiting for me outside, one that was included in a palace and had rules and regulations which I hated to follow. At least here, I knew what to expect. I could do my job and still be free to do as I pleased. With Maverick’s protection, I had far more liberties here than I did back home.“We’ve got the wrong person. You weren’t supposed to be here, Miss. Volkov and your brother used his connections to make sure you won’t stay in this place any longer.”“But…I—I’m a thief.”Morris shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. You’re free to go.”“Sir, there’s some mistake. You should tell Dimitri that I’m going to be released only after I’ve served my sentence.”“I don’t have the authority to do that. I’ve received orders from my superiors to let you go and this is not in my hands.”“When am I going to
MAVERICK “I liked someone. A human, to be specific.” She confessed. “Where did you meet him?” “He worked for my brother as his legal advisor.” I waited patiently for her to continue. “He and I became good friends. He sneaked me out of the palace sometimes and I got to experience things that I otherwise wouldn’t have. My brother warned me about him but I didn’t listen.” If that motherfucker hurt her, I’d hunt him down and kill him myself. To think that someone would have looked at her and thought of causing her harm made my blood boil. She was insecure and didn’t trust others very easily. This man could be the reason. “There was a party in the palace and humans who willingly let vampires feed on them for favors like money or drugs. I didn’t like what my brother and father practiced so I chose to feed on animals instead.” “I was feeding in a room that’s usually not allowed for human servants to enter but I heard the lock turning and I thought it was someone from my family,
SOFIA I didn’t expect that outburst from Maverick, and definitely not the sudden declaration of ownership. He looked so lost in whatever that he was doing, he wouldn’t even pay attention to me.I wasn’t going to ask him to elaborate on what he’d just said, because that would make things so much more complicated. While Maverick was possessive when he wanted to get things done, he hadn’t told me he had any feelings for me, which was fine, because we didn’t need to complicate matters. Since he’d fought in a fight ring to protect me, he could think it gave him a free pass to own me. If he wanted us to be a thing outside of prison, he had to say it. Instead, he sat in the corner, sulking. My brother probably said things he shouldn’t have, and Maverick wasn’t going to talk. I’d done my hair and wore his favorite lingerie, but it was going to be a waste. He wasn’t coming to my bed. I fed on the blood-bag and downed a bottle of the birth-control potion. I never missed taking it. Pregnancy i
MAVERICK Sofia’s brother looked exactly like a prince from a children’s fairytale book. He was the male equivalent of Sofia with his stormy blue eyes and dark wavy hair. He even wore the same frown and the unwavering overconfident glare.I laughed.“Something funny inmate?” The guard asked.“Nothing.”He locked me in a visiting room with a wall separating me and Dimitri. There were shackles around my wrists.“You have ten minutes.”Dimitri didn’t smile, did not greet, just continued to bore holes into me with his heated stare. I knew from the look on his face that he was looking down on me. I was just too wild for the blue-bloods. No doubt he wanted to put his hands through the bars and strangle me. As long as he wasn’t showing any fangs, I didn’t need to be hostile.“Sofia must have told you about me.” He started.“She did. Let’s cut to the chase. Why did you want to see me?”“Because you’ve brainwashed my sister, you sick bastard!”I did not expect that outburst.I laughed, “How ol
SOFIAMy hands were cuffed, and the guard dragged me out of the cafeteria. When he told me that my brother was here for a visit, I almost didn’t believe him, but knowing my brother, he must have finally tracked me down. This also meant that it was all over.Maverick sensed something was wrong. He stood up, “if you don’t want to see him, you don’t have to.”“He’s my brother.” I hadn’t even realized that I was tapping my foot. “I have to see what he has to say…”Any other female would have happily traded places with me. I would have come across as a spoilt brat who didn’t want to live in a palace. Who in their right mind would want to live in a prison instead? My freedom here was limited, but at least there were rules that I could follow and get away with things. In the palace, I was a caged animal.I walked behind the guard, the entire way to the visiting room. I had a sudden urge to bolt. To run and hide, to pretend like I wasn’t the woman my brother was looking for.We came to a halt
SOFIAThe wolf hopped onto the bed and lay there on the mattress. I was reluctant at first since I wasn’t sure if it was really him but those haunting eyes gave him away. His golden eyes stared at me, unwavering. They were whiskey gold mixed with a speck of green. Wordlessly, he closed them again. There was no sign of the beast that was unleashed earlier, he just looked like a harmless big wolf.“Maverick…” I walked closer to the bed, keeping my distance in case he didn’t recognize me. The last thing I needed was a werewolf bite.I was terrified of what was going to happen next. Does he stay in the wolf form for a long time because he’s injured?I didn’t know what it was like for the werewolves since I’d never been close to them until I’d been sent to Dark Waters. Werewolves had always been my enemy; we were taught to kill them.I couldn’t guess the amount of Wolfsbane used, it could have been a deadly amount. If that was the case, Maverick wouldn’t live through this. It would kill hi
