1:45pm. Shit! I gathered the photocopied documents and ran towards my desk to staple the papers. I hastily placed them in individual folders and ran like hell to the board room where the Senior Leadership Group was assembled as well as the members of the stockholders. Lisa, my colleague, snatched the folders and went around the huge table placing the folders on assigned slots. I went to the coffee station and gave out paper cups of brewed coffee to the attendees. The other junior administrative assistant, Michie, looked petrified as she stood near the door. She was supposed to take the directors and corporate secretary to their assigned seats but all she could do was gape and looked at me for help. I hurriedly met the attendees at the door and directed them to their seats. Once everyone had been seated, I nodded at Michie and Lisa and we all stepped out and silently closed the door. The Board Meeting commenced. I breathed a sigh of relief. “Good job,” I whispered to my two colleagues and we all went back to our respective workstations.
I was busy finalizing my finance reports when my phone rang. It was from an unknown number. “Hello?” A female voice answered, “Hi, Nia? This is Izzie.” Izzie was my high school best friend. I was so surprised at getting her call. “Hey, what’s up?” “Nia, can we meet later at Cafe Medusa in BGC? Around 8:00 pm?” Her voice sounded off. “Sure, I’ll see you there.” She said goodbye and put down the phone. I made sure to save her number. I looked at my watch and mentally calculated my next step. If I want to join them, this meant leaving the office at 7:15 pm to be able to get there at 8. It was a Friday so I took note mentally of the usual traffic going from Alabang to BGC via Skyway. Thank God it’s Friday, I thought. I decided to wrap up early. I called up my husband to tell him I need to meet up with my friends. “Sure, Enjoy. I will just leave the office early and go straight home. Maybe I can still catch up with Nico over dinner.” Nico was our only son. I breathed a sigh of relief. I mumbled “Thanks, see you later,” and turned off my phone. I cleared my desk and grabbed my bag. “Good night and Happy Friday!” I waved at Lisa. She waved back and returned to her work.Bonifacio Global City (BGC) Taguig was a busy, cloaked in colorful, dancing lights, lifestyle district. The hustle and bustle of the dynamic business center were full of people trying out the numerous restaurants, bars, and cafes. It was one of the best places in Metro Manila to meet and have fun with friends and family. I drove around a bit, looking for the best spot to park my car. I took a peek at my reflection, hastily put on some powder and lip gloss, and stepped out of the car. I was garbed in my usual Friday black ensemble: black polo, pants, and flats. I quickly weaved through the throng and walked towards Cafe Medusa and entered. I saw Izzie seated in the corner with our other friends: Ayene, Julie, Raoul, and Len. I said Hi to the group and ordered mango juice.
“So what’s up?” I munched on a spring roll without waiting for anyone to answer. Izzie was my best friend in high school and the prettiest among us. She won first place in a school pageant, represented us in the inter-school competition, and also won that one. She was the class muse, with the dimpled smile, fair skin, pretty eyes, height I sorely lacked, and fashion sense. Even in her 40’s, she maintained that drop-dead beauty. She pulled me so I can sit beside her. She hugged me and whispered. “I miss you. I thought you would not join again. I was about to unfriend you on F*”, she pouted. “I’m sorry I’ve been busy. Is there something wrong?” I asked. She sighed. Everyone was looking seriously. “Noah is to be taken to custody. His charge was pretty serious.” We were silent. Then Julie sobbed and whimpered,” Why Noah? He’s not supposed to end up like this.” Noah was one of our high school friends, and the gayest ever. He would always be with the girls and be the life of the party along with his best bud Romi. I knew about what happened, as Noah told me weeks ago during our last meet-up. He was falsely accused of company funds' embezzlement and e****a by his superior. He wanted to go to their HR to file a complaint against that boss of the same, but the latter beat him to it. Initially, he wanted to run away but we told him to stay and fight the process. However, the boss made sure he will be imprisoned to bury his misdeeds and set up the would-be whistleblower. It was the same story of how a corporate honcho will work to cover up his wrongdoings. I thought it only happened in the tv dramas we watch. It was even uglier, messier in real life.
We all mulled over this devastating news, chatted on how we can all help, and ended the night getting slightly drunk. We all went to get coffee to sober up before going home. Izzie came to see me off and we made a date to visit Noah the next week in jail. Izzie walked with me to the parking lot and we hugged. She made me promise to call her. She then walked towards the entrance of the restaurant to wait for her driver.
As I was driving home, I passed by Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenue and saw our old high school. They have not changed the name: Juan Antonio Santos High School. It still was the same old, tall building lending lights to passers-by and commuters getting off the light rail transit station. I parked across the building and just stared at it and hummed.
A wave of emotions swept over me. I felt more alive as I recollect on the past. Meanwhile, a familiar song was playing on my radio. I hummed softly "Always something there to remind me..." I tapped my feet and closed my eyes. The memories of my 3-year stay in that building came flowing back ...
June 13, 1983. It’s the first day of school and I was supposed to come in early to check in first with the school registrar for my brief orientation and list of class subjects. I wanted to kick myself for not pushing my older sister Mica to hurry. This was our first day in our new school and it would be unpleasant if we came in late to our class. At 13, I felt nervous like an incoming kindergarten pupil.Mica and I were transferred from an exclusive girls’ school to a co-ed semi-private one. My Nanay (Mom) decided to transfer Mica as she had issues with the faculty of our previous school. And decided without telling me she included me in the process.“I want you to keep an eye on your sister. If she is all alone in that new school, who knows wh
‘I survived one week in this freaking school. Hurray!’, I thought to myself. I stuck like glue to Charm and Val, so I didn’t have to go around alone in the unfamiliar old building. We were slowly getting ourselves acclimated to the new school and its studentry. I wore our new uniform: a white blouse with a maroon school logo on the chest, maroon ribbon tied around the collar, and a skirt. One beautiful girl named Izzie lent me her book in Science and toured me in some parts of the school. Noah went with us and we had a blast going around as they made funny remarks about some teachers and students. I also got to meet the boys behind us, Archer, Jon, Enzo, Ira, and Raoul who were a bubbly bunch. And of course, Lance. He would always greet us each morning before joining the bubbly boys. This group would usually hang out along the benches under the trees, checking out girls, talking about basketball and other stuff. They seemed oblivious
As I was walking towards the girls’ locker/restroom to change into our PE Uniform, Charm grabbed me. “Hey, watch it!” Charm giggled and said, “The volleyball tryouts will be held this afternoon. Let’s go for it!” I gasped “But I don’t have a spare shirt!” Val squeezed in and said “But we do have our PE shirts and sneakers on, right? I think we’re good.” We went to the registration table and signed our names. We sat on the bleachers’ area and watched as the PE Teachers conducted tryouts for the AM and PM volleyball teams for Freshman and Sophomore. The Juniors and Seniors would have theirs in the afternoon. I saw a lot of girls trying out in their old volleyball jerseys. ‘And all I’m wearing is this crappy P.E. t-shirt.’ I badly wanted to run to the store to buy another shirt but I don’t have spare cash at the moment. Even Val and Charm were wearing other volleyball jerseys in amazing colors. I bit my lip. The teachers were calling the name
Monday. Mica was still in the shower but told me I can go ahead. I quickly put on my uniform, brushed my still wet hair, put on powder, and grabbed my bag. I do not want to be tardy and the jeepney rides usually get full before 6:30 a.m. I asked Nanay for my weekly allowance then said goodbye.I walked quickly to the jeepney stop and lined up. I was daydreaming and yawning when someone tapped me lightly on the shoulder. It was Lance. He was so cute and as usual, impeccably dressed in spotless polo and well-ironed pants. He had his blue backpack with him. I gaped and said “Hey, you’re here. Shouldn’t you be at Kamias St.?”“I told you we are going to school together, right? So it means I have to be here instead.”“Why? You walked blocks away from
Val approached me at the cafeteria and pulled me out of line. “Hey! I was almost near the food display!”I nearly screamed at him. Val ignored my protestations and whispered, “Have you seen our dear old friend Charm?”“Not really, she bolted out of the room as soon as the bell rang.”“And you did not bother following her?”“Why should I? Maybe she’s going to meet someone. And I need to buy snacks. I’m starving.”Val rolled his eyes and said, “That intense girl whats-her-name from Section 3 and her gang followed her to the restroom and I heard a screaming match!”I gaped at him, “Really? I didn’t know. Let’s go find
Browsing through the book rack, I was engrossed in the books of Stephen King. He was really a prolific writer and his stories contain both horror and humor of sorts. I really like him, and he belonged to my favorite circle of writers and novelists. Roald Dahl, C.S. Lewis, the list goes on. It was a quiet Saturday, and I decided to go to the National Bookstore in Quad, Makati. I was just alone, and I told Nanay I will be back a little after lunch. I only intended to buy some school supplies and t-shirts. I looked around the store and felt inundated with books. As there were new books displayed, I got so immersed in browsing through the synopsis and the first few chapters that I forgot the time. It was already past 1:00 pm when I finally left the store with my purchases. I felt the pangs of hunger. I was thinking of whether to buy something to eat or just go home when I heard my name called.
Charm was waiting for Val and me so eagerly when I came to school. I noticed she had a new hairstyle, slightly wavy and shorter. She looked so pretty. “Good morning. Why do you look so edgy today?” I sat on the bench beside her. “Let’s wait for Val first,” she breathed. Pretty soon, Val arrived and immediately came to us. “So, what’s up? Charm, I can sense that you are about to burst with some news. If it is good, go ahead and tell us. If not, I am leaving.” Charm frowned at him, then said, “I have a new boyfriend.” I looked at her. “Again?”“What do you mean again? He is my first one here in our school. His name is Gio, our senior from Section 15.” I can see how proud she was. After all, Gio was our senior and may have enough popularity points to gain her attention. “Congratulations! At least you&rs
Friday. Val and Charm were both looking at watching a movie after class. I told them I cannot go. I promised myself to devote my time reviewing for the next two weeks before the Finals.“We still have time to study. You can do that tomorrow, Saturday.” Val said. We were going to the ladies’ room as Charm wanted to change into civilian clothing before leaving for the mall. Val already changed into his plain, black shirt and tucked his polo inside his bag. I was just tagging along, ready to go home. “I know, but every minute counts. Remember we need to get an average of 88% to maintain our class ranking and stay with Section 1.” I sighed. I was getting anxious. Val was thoughtful, then said “I think my average is between 86-87% at this point. I only need to get a 90% on 3 subjects with the quizzes next week and get the same on our Finals.” I grumble
I always felt like I was just a regular guy. Growing up, my parents would shower me with their undivided attention as I was the only boy. My older sister Terry "bullied" me when we were kids, and because of her, I was a bit shy around girls. I just liked hanging around with noisy guys like Jon and Ira, as I felt they "protected" me. I had crushes, but never really told any girl I liked her. Jon joked that the girl must be the one to court me, for I usually clamped up around them. That is, until I met Nia. During our Sophomore year, I heard heard rumors about a girl who transferred to our coed school from an exclusive girls' school. My curiosity was piqued. I felt bad hearing some of them making fun of the girl we have yet to meet. I saw new faces in the room and I asked Ira casually if the new girl had arrived. "Nope, I don't think she's here yet. Those new students came from co-ed schools as well," he replied. I sat down, feeling disappointed. Suddenly, I saw a girl stood b
I was startled to hear my office phone ringing continuously. I picked it up quickly and breathlessly said, "Hello?" "Hello, Nia? Izzie here. What time are you ready? We need to go see Noah immediately at the precinct." I checked my watch and responded, "I can wrap up now and go there. I'll meet you at the mall then we go directly to the precinct. How about the others?" I heard Izzie sighed and said, "Ayene, Leny and Carly went there an hour ago. Ira and Enzo will also proceed there in a bit. I'd like to talk to Noah. He must be really scared." "Don't worry. Buy some snacks, towels, toiletries for him, and I'll be there in a jiffy." I quickly drove to the mall to pick up Izzie. I saw her waiting for me at the mall entrance and quickly stopped at the curb and opened the door. She came in, hugged me and closed the door. She started chatting about Noah. "I told him to resign from that stupid job. He was so stressed out for months, an
"I will not take No again for an answer, Nia," my friend Naomi said crispily over the phone. I was staring at my computer and typing endless memos for my boss who was the senior vice president for Corporate Banking of a leading universal bank. My head was tilted, skillfully balancing the receiver while leafing through the pages of the draft. I was hired as an assistant and working with the bank for nearly 3 years. I met Naomi while I was an intern for a professional advertising executive and she was then his assistant. I liked her because of her feisty nature. "I already met the guy and he seems promising. But do I need to go into another date with him? I am very busy," I answered. Naomi set me up on a blind date with Ervin who was an account executive working for a big pharmaceutical company. "He has been asking why you don't want to give your personal as well as your professional contact number. I think he's got the hots for you. Why don't you give him a chance? Just
Time really flies, and how! I am now a Senior in college, and in just a few months will graduate hopefully with Latin Honors. Soon, I'd be able to keep my promise to Nanay. It was a long arduous journey, but I did it. I only need to pass the remaining exams and defend my thesis. I was so grateful to Jena, Eden, Arnold, and the rest of my classmates who made life in college bearable. As expected, life there was more serious and I learned that you have to take ownership of your decisions and not rely on others. I realized my inner strength and determination to finish what I've started. I sacrificed Lance, and nothing's going to stop me from my goal. A stumbling block indeed came, but I was able to overcome and moved on. A few months ago, I was roaming the University Belt with Jena and Arnold looking for additional sources for our thesis. The place was teeming with students from other universities and colleges. I was able to get copies of the books I needed and was waiting for
One year later.I was walking towards the Main Building/Science library of the University of Saint Thomas to look through additional materials for our group presentation scheduled for next week. It was a hectic year for the Freshman AB class, and I was looking forward to a relaxing summer. I saw my classmates, Arnold and Eden already in our favorite table and I quickly sat on the chair across the two. Both smiled at me and proceeded to discuss the materials they were able to get from the undiscovered section of the old library. On the last Friday of March that year, the class of 1986 graduated. Surrounded by excited classmates and proud parents and companions, I felt empty that day. Even when my Nanay shed tears and Bree took pictures of me on the stage with my diploma and mother in tow, I barely mustered a tiny grin. Because we all brought our family members, my classmates and I were only able to say quick goodbyes before we left the venue. I quick
Classes were resumed several days after the peaceful EDSA Revolution of February 25, 1986. My classmates were very excited to see each other again. The school officials welcomed us back during our morning assembly, with the principal asking the students to go on studying and not worry about the political situation. He also reminded us seniors of our remaining projects and upcoming examinations, which effectively gave us the direction we needed. My clasmates worked like crazy, and we extended our stay at the campus in order to finish all our projects. Every minute with them counts. Lance and I went home late, and we see each other during weekends, too. Bree talked to me one night. She looked subdued, and I was a bit concerned. "How are you doing at school? Ready for college?" she asked. I nodded vigorously. "Of course! It's just the final examinations and we are all set to graduate. Don't worry. I just need to wait for the documents i need to submit to UST and I
Lance and I quickly went out to join our group. were on the dancefloor, gyrating to the class favorite song, "Always something there to remind me." ValAll of themand Charm were with us, along with some of their friends and we made a circle. Pairs danced off amidst loud cheers and laughter. Charm hugged me, and thoughts of Alfred were forgotten. It was the Seniors' night, our special event before graduation, and no one can take the excitement away from us. Lance and I embraced and danced, and our friends rejoiced with us. I saw Izzie dancing with Archer, Noah and Val stealing the show along with Jon and Ira, and that was how Class IV-1 spent their last JS Prom together. At past 1:00am, we left the campus. We saw a store still open, and we stayed for half an hour drinking cold soda and eating biscuits while we recounted everything that happened that night. We said goodnight to each other, and went home. Lance and I sat inside his car, and we talked about what
That year's JS Prom was austere. The antsy political situation was felt everywhere and our principal almost cancelled the event. However, the majority of the students and their parents implored the school authorities to push through with it. Certainly, it was an annual event that most juniors and seniors look forward to and make up the bulk of their high school memories. We were encouraged to wear second-hand gowns and tuxedoes or rent-out from shops that give out discounts and promos to students. Noah comically said even with the end of the world coming, we must have our prom. I looked a myself at our old mirror, checking my simple make-up and my altered pink gown. Lance will be coming any time now, and I quickly picked up my purse and ran outside. I saw him parking the car and I quickly went to the passenger side. I slid in, and kissed him on the cheek. "I think we need to go now or we'll be late for registration. Archer already went to Izzie's house ea
Lance's act of courage was the trending topic the following week, as the bubbly boys and girls of Section IV-1 excitedly recounted to everyone who cared to listen how he quickly ran down the treacherous slope to save me from harm. He became even more popular and awarded a few days later with the CAT Medal of Bravery which was a first. It may have been an embarrasing time for me, but Lance would tell everyone that he only thought of saving me, and he thought of nothing else. I imagined how he must have looked like, almost flying down the hill to be able to catch up to a helpless me. So dreamy and handsome, and so brave. I felt so lucky to have the bravest boy at my side. The next few weeks was both busy and exciting. The holiday season was coming and everyone of us was rushing to complete school activities and projects. We also took college entrance examinations in our chosen universities and colleges. Izzie was becoming distracted, with her university res
