Browsing through the book rack, I was engrossed in the books of Stephen King. He was really a prolific writer and his stories contain both horror and humor of sorts. I really like him, and he belonged to my favorite circle of writers and novelists. Roald Dahl, C.S. Lewis, the list goes on. It was a quiet Saturday, and I decided to go to the National Bookstore in Quad, Makati. I was just alone, and I told Nanay I will be back a little after lunch. I only intended to buy some school supplies and t-shirts. I looked around the store and felt inundated with books. As there were new books displayed, I got so immersed in browsing through the synopsis and the first few chapters that I forgot the time. It was already past 1:00 pm when I finally left the store with my purchases. I felt the pangs of hunger. I was thinking of whether to buy something to eat or just go home when I heard my name called.
“Hey, Nia.” I turned around. It was Lance.
“Oh, hi. What are you doing here?”, I surreptitiously look if he was with someone. He noticed it and said, “I’m here all by myself. I want to buy some school stuff.” I showed him my plastic bag of purchases and said, “Same here. I just bought mine. I was about to go home.”
My stomach grumbled loudly and I slowly rubbed it. “Well, I was about to look for something to eat. I have not eaten lunch yet,” I said.
“Let’s look around and see what you like,” he pulled my hand and we went towards the food court area of SM Makati. I was happily looking around and did not notice he took my plastic bag of purchases. I pointed at the food display. “How about that yummy-looking spaghetti over there?” We went, ordered two plates and drinks, and he brought the tray to the cashier. He paid for our orders and we went to look for an empty table. I was so famished that I forgot to thank him for paying for our orders.
“I should have called you up and asked if you are planning to go somewhere,” Lance said.
“It’s alright. It’s really unplanned. I just thought I could replenish my pad paper and pens. But I do want to look at the new books.”
“I know you already bought yours, but can you come with me to the National Bookstore? I need to pick up some notebooks and pens plus the materials we need for our group project”, Lance said almost apologetically.
“Sure. Thanks for paying for my lunch, by the way. I was so hungry I forgot to thank you,” I wiped my mouth and drank water. I felt refueled and ready for another run to go around the bookstore. We stood up and walked towards the shop.
He went around getting his stuff, while I went back to browsing through new books. I furtively looked back at where he was. I noticed some schoolgirls looking at him, and two were even planning to come closer to where he was. I badly wanted to giggle but stopped myself. Really, these girls. I peered back at Lance. He looked so cute in his cap, white shirt tucked in blue jeans, and wearing new sneakers. He was taller than some boys around the shop, pretty slim and he looked totally oblivious of the stares he was getting from some high school girls around the store. I went around some bookshelves and continued browsing through the fiction section. I felt someone looking at me, so I turned around. Lance was there, carrying his basket of stuff. “I am going to the cashier now. Do you need something?” I quickly walked over to him. “No, let’s go. You must be in a hurry.”
We lined up at the cashier, and I felt ogling coming from the same bunch of schoolgirls checking out Lance earlier. I heard one whispering, “Is that his girlfriend? She's so plain-looking.” The other replied, “Maybe his sister. I doubt that she is his girlfriend.” I found this absurd and wanted to pull their hair. Or maybe kick them in the shin. Unaware of this, Lance quietly paid for his purchases, then we left the store. He was strolling so casually.
“Are you meeting someone? Or are you in a hurry to go someplace?” I blurted out.
“No. Why did you think that? I was just looking around.” He stopped to look at me.“Sorry, I thought you needed to be somewhere and I would not want to bother you. I can go home so you can…” I did not finish what I was about to say as he pulled my hand then pointed towards a shop. “I’d like to check out some shirts over there.” So we went inside the store. It was selling more of mens’ shirts and accessories. He went to look at some, then asked me “What do you think of this?” while showing a shirt with red and white stripes. He would look adorable in that, I thought. I nodded and answered, “Yes. You’d look so cute in that. The colors suit you as you are fair-skinned. Plus the horizontal stripes would make you look a bit bigger.” He smiled broadly. He ordered for his size, and as we waited, we talked about our Finals and the projects we needed to submit. He spoke about the bubbly boys’ plan to go out after the Finals. He asked me if the girls have similar plans. I shook my head and said, “We’ll see how it goes. Most of us are really focused on making sure we submit everything before the deadline. I do hope we can go out after. We deserve it.” I frowned. He went to the cashier to pay for his shirt.
I thought, ‘Maybe he plans to wear that on his date with whomever.’ I can imagine Lance wearing the shirt, and I know he would look so cool in it. I thought of Belinda. I have not really seen him with her even on campus. I was a bit curious. So I mustered enough courage and asked, “Are you seeing that girl, Belinda whats-her-name from school?” He stared at me, then replied “No. Why ?” Lance can be so frugal with words.
“Nothing. Her group keeps staring at you, and me. I just want no episode like that of Charm’s.” I thought 'Where some girls gang up on Charm inside the restroom.'
“Why would that happen to you? I don’t go out with Belinda. Or with anyone else outside our class for that matter.” We continued walking. I looked at the candy display of the Candy Corner. He must have noticed I was ogling at the colorful gums and sticks that he stopped. He pointed at the cola-flavored stick. “Would you like those? I need something tangy.”
“Oh, yes. That’s my favorite.” I totally forgot about what we were talking about. He proceeded to purchase those lovely sour, honest-to-goodness rubbery candy sticks. He gave me the small bag while taking a bite on one stick. We reached the jeepney stop while munching on the candy sticks. We talked about our moving up, his music program with their club for the Senior Graduation Ceremony, and our class ranking. We need to maintain an average of at least 88% overall to stay with the same section. I thought of my plan to increase my study hours and thought, ‘No more Saturday hangouts or gimmicks until after the Finals. I need to get more hours to increase my average.’ I was so busy thinking of all my plans that I did not realize we had reached the end of the route. I was surprised to still see Lance. He should have gotten off several stops ago.
“Why did you not get off your street?”
“I will walk you home, that’s why. You were so preoccupied I thought you needed me to bring you back to Earth.”
“Sorry, I was already thinking of how I need to increase my study hours prior to our Finals. I really need to stay focused and not go out with Charm or Val these next few weeks. So I want you to stop me from going out with them if they insist on going someplace.”
“Why not study with me or set up a group study? That way we can help each other by reviewing as one. You can see if you lack anything. I can also share my notes with you. You can do the same for me. You’re the best in English and Reading and Comprehension. You can share with me your tricks on writing those awesome essays.” I stopped and considered this suggestion. It was actually pretty sensible. I can work on my weaknesses and also polish my strong points. Lance was very good in Math and Science, my weak points. He can surely help me out there.
“That’s a brilliant idea! You can tutor me in Science and Math. I’ll help you with the other subjects! Can we do this next week, please?” I rattled on excitedly. He laughed.
“Sure, let’s meet next Saturday. We can do this at your house or mine. Let’s prepare our reviewers to save time. Then we can test each other and see our low points.” We reached my house and I turned to him.
“I’m really so glad I bumped into you and hung out with the best buddy ever. Thanks for the food. And I’d love to see you in that cute shirt.”
“Welcome and thanks for coming with me. I’ll see you on Monday, then.” He waved at me, then turned to walk home.
As I went up to our bedroom, I thought of how nice Lance really was. He was not conceited nor arrogant. He may be cute and all, but he would always be so unassuming and level-headed. Not everyone who looks that way would behave like that. Boys from our school would walk so cockily, thinking they are Heaven’s gift to girls. I thought to myself, ‘I’m so lucky to have a friend like him. He’s just like my brother Josel who takes care of me.’ I looked forward to our study group. Maybe I can go to his house instead, I mused. The phone rang. It was Charm.
“Where were you? I called up earlier but your mom told me you went to Quad. Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I only planned to buy school supplies. I browsed through the new books at the National Bookstore. Then I went home.” I was about to say I saw and hung out with Lance but stopped myself. Who knows what Charm would again think about? We chatted more about our schedule for next week, then she rattled on about the new guy she was seeing. He was a senior and comes from the afternoon section. He was cute and dreamy though not so tall, she animatedly said. I just listened to her while she recounted all the details of their Friday date. Afterward, we ended our conversation. My sister Bree came in and said, “Who’s that on the phone? Is that your classmate Lance?” I was so surprised when she mentioned his name.
“No. That was Charm. But how did you know Lance?” My curiosity was piqued.
“He called up earlier before lunch. He was looking for you. So I told him you left to check out the National Bookstore at Quad. He sounded so polite.” I was astonished by this. Lance did not mention this to me at all. Bree went on, “He told me his full name. Lance Javier. So I asked if his sister is named Terry. I found out he is Terry’s brother. Terry was my classmate in college. Talk about having a small world, “she went on. I was speechless and just listened. I pondered.‘But Lance said he just went there to buy stuff. He forgot to mention he called our house.’
I was so glad I did not tell Charm that we met at the mall. Who knows what story she will concoct with Val. Definitely, the two would come up with something with their overactive imagination. But it was so nice to have hung out with Lance. I got to know him well. Plus hearing his suggestion on having the study group. I just shrugged off any thoughts of the call that he failed to mention, and went to bed.
Charm was waiting for Val and me so eagerly when I came to school. I noticed she had a new hairstyle, slightly wavy and shorter. She looked so pretty. “Good morning. Why do you look so edgy today?” I sat on the bench beside her. “Let’s wait for Val first,” she breathed. Pretty soon, Val arrived and immediately came to us. “So, what’s up? Charm, I can sense that you are about to burst with some news. If it is good, go ahead and tell us. If not, I am leaving.” Charm frowned at him, then said, “I have a new boyfriend.” I looked at her. “Again?”“What do you mean again? He is my first one here in our school. His name is Gio, our senior from Section 15.” I can see how proud she was. After all, Gio was our senior and may have enough popularity points to gain her attention. “Congratulations! At least you&rs
Friday. Val and Charm were both looking at watching a movie after class. I told them I cannot go. I promised myself to devote my time reviewing for the next two weeks before the Finals.“We still have time to study. You can do that tomorrow, Saturday.” Val said. We were going to the ladies’ room as Charm wanted to change into civilian clothing before leaving for the mall. Val already changed into his plain, black shirt and tucked his polo inside his bag. I was just tagging along, ready to go home. “I know, but every minute counts. Remember we need to get an average of 88% to maintain our class ranking and stay with Section 1.” I sighed. I was getting anxious. Val was thoughtful, then said “I think my average is between 86-87% at this point. I only need to get a 90% on 3 subjects with the quizzes next week and get the same on our Finals.” I grumble
I was late coming in that Monday. Traffic was heavy and I had to wait for Mica so we could go to school together. I sneaked past the guard who was busy accosting some students not wearing IDs. I rushed over to our line and made it just before the flag ceremony. I breathed in a sigh of relief. I looked at Charm and Val, who were chatting in the middle of the line. I squeezed in to join them. “Hi. So, did Lance call you?” Val asked. I was astonished. “Why?” Charm giggled. “I told you last Friday night, right? We saw them with some pretty girls from that exclusive school in Makati.” Val raised his eyebrows at me. “Oh, yes, I talked to him. He came to our house last Saturday. We spent the afternoon studying. One of the girls was a cousin of Jon,” I said casually. I giggled at their expression. They looked so comical. Val’s mouth was agape, while Charm’s eyebrows were furrowed. Lance suddenly came over and sai
Finals Week. The culmination of months of preparation and sacrificing weekend jaunts or gimmicks with friends. The final countdown. I massaged my forehead and stretched my arms after I completed answering my last test paper. I did what I could, and I will just have to wait and pray for positive results. I glanced at Charm and Val. Their heads were still bowed down, furiously answering the questions on their respective papers. I looked around and saw Izzie, Lance, Archer, Jon, Noah, and about half of the class were still not done with their tests. The last subject was Reading and Comprehension, my favorite. Our teacher Ma’am Decena shooed me out as I handed my paper. I grabbed my bag and stepped outside. I saw Dahlia, Len, Julie, and Ayene outside, comparing notes. This was the Honors circle, and I was pondering on why I was in the same group. Len saw me and shrieked, “I knew you would finish up early. Those questions and essays were just a
Friday was the last day of school. I brought an extra set of casual clothing with me just in case the class decides to carry on with the proposed last-day film watching. I rode to school with Mica, as all seniors need to get ready for their graduation exercises. I saw her run over to her section, and the Senior students were occupying a big chunk of the school grounds for their rehearsal. Members of the Music Club were near the platform, testing their musical instruments. I saw Lance carrying a big, black bag. I remember he was a member of the Club and plays the keyboard. I went up to our room and immediately looked for Charm and Val. They were roaming around the hallway that morning, checking in with other section students. Our room was also lively with discussions on how to spend the last day of school. I placed my bag on my seat then ran out to join Val and Charm. We did not have any classes, as the faculty was busy preparing for the graduation eve
It was a sweltering day and I burned my skin several times over from spending too much time outside. Those were the hottest days of summer. I ran around the lot trying to catch that freakishly fast chicken that my Nanay wanted to butcher and cook into tinola. I was crying while doing so, imagining the fate that chicken would have under my Nanay’s experienced hands. I tripped and fell, hurting my knee in the process. An ugly bruise emerged, and I just lost it. I stopped and yelled, “They are selling dressed chickens in the market. Why are you making me go through this? What about Mica?” My Nanay briskly walked towards me and swatted my nape. “You dare shout at your mother?” I ran in the direction of our nipa-styled house to escape from her clutches. “Come back here! Who will capture that chicken?” I ignored her screams and went inside to look for Mica. She was still lying on the bed and snoring. I w
That Monday morning, I was up bright and early to get ready for school. I showered and then dressed with special care. Last night, prepared my new black shoes and ironed my new set of uniforms. This year, I had longer hair, which I usually kept well-groomed by wearing headbands. My old hairdo was getting on my nerves because it simply helped to make me look younger. I wasn't sure whether Lance would join me because it was only the first day of school and kids generally arrive late or not at all. We also didn't get to meet because he was too busy assisting his sister in running their shop.Lance was nowhere to be found at the jeepney station or on their block. I was a little upset, but when I saw Izzie, I felt better. Izzie shrieked upon seeing me and proceeded to chat excitedly about our class. We were so preoccupied with discussing the new students coming in, that we almost passed over our school. We disembarked and noticed some kids entering at a leisurely pace. We p
The weeks that followed kept us all busy. Our new classmates easily adjusted to the pace and acclimated to the group. Jessie, the girl transferred from the afternoon section, was very affable and eager to please. She was a dark, slightly taller girl than me and sporting very straight oily hair. She would always take part in our Friday hangouts and would even self-assuredly join the bubbly boys' discussions. The sports competitions came in and tryouts were conducted. Jessie excitedly told me that she might join the volleyball tryouts but she did not show up when the day came. As expected, Charm, Felicia, and I were selected to the Junior - AM team. Jessie excitedly told me that she might join the tryouts but she did not show up during the selection process. Although her seat was in the middle, she always stays in our row to chat and have fun with the bubbly boys. Charm was then going out with
I always felt like I was just a regular guy. Growing up, my parents would shower me with their undivided attention as I was the only boy. My older sister Terry "bullied" me when we were kids, and because of her, I was a bit shy around girls. I just liked hanging around with noisy guys like Jon and Ira, as I felt they "protected" me. I had crushes, but never really told any girl I liked her. Jon joked that the girl must be the one to court me, for I usually clamped up around them. That is, until I met Nia. During our Sophomore year, I heard heard rumors about a girl who transferred to our coed school from an exclusive girls' school. My curiosity was piqued. I felt bad hearing some of them making fun of the girl we have yet to meet. I saw new faces in the room and I asked Ira casually if the new girl had arrived. "Nope, I don't think she's here yet. Those new students came from co-ed schools as well," he replied. I sat down, feeling disappointed. Suddenly, I saw a girl stood b
I was startled to hear my office phone ringing continuously. I picked it up quickly and breathlessly said, "Hello?" "Hello, Nia? Izzie here. What time are you ready? We need to go see Noah immediately at the precinct." I checked my watch and responded, "I can wrap up now and go there. I'll meet you at the mall then we go directly to the precinct. How about the others?" I heard Izzie sighed and said, "Ayene, Leny and Carly went there an hour ago. Ira and Enzo will also proceed there in a bit. I'd like to talk to Noah. He must be really scared." "Don't worry. Buy some snacks, towels, toiletries for him, and I'll be there in a jiffy." I quickly drove to the mall to pick up Izzie. I saw her waiting for me at the mall entrance and quickly stopped at the curb and opened the door. She came in, hugged me and closed the door. She started chatting about Noah. "I told him to resign from that stupid job. He was so stressed out for months, an
"I will not take No again for an answer, Nia," my friend Naomi said crispily over the phone. I was staring at my computer and typing endless memos for my boss who was the senior vice president for Corporate Banking of a leading universal bank. My head was tilted, skillfully balancing the receiver while leafing through the pages of the draft. I was hired as an assistant and working with the bank for nearly 3 years. I met Naomi while I was an intern for a professional advertising executive and she was then his assistant. I liked her because of her feisty nature. "I already met the guy and he seems promising. But do I need to go into another date with him? I am very busy," I answered. Naomi set me up on a blind date with Ervin who was an account executive working for a big pharmaceutical company. "He has been asking why you don't want to give your personal as well as your professional contact number. I think he's got the hots for you. Why don't you give him a chance? Just
Time really flies, and how! I am now a Senior in college, and in just a few months will graduate hopefully with Latin Honors. Soon, I'd be able to keep my promise to Nanay. It was a long arduous journey, but I did it. I only need to pass the remaining exams and defend my thesis. I was so grateful to Jena, Eden, Arnold, and the rest of my classmates who made life in college bearable. As expected, life there was more serious and I learned that you have to take ownership of your decisions and not rely on others. I realized my inner strength and determination to finish what I've started. I sacrificed Lance, and nothing's going to stop me from my goal. A stumbling block indeed came, but I was able to overcome and moved on. A few months ago, I was roaming the University Belt with Jena and Arnold looking for additional sources for our thesis. The place was teeming with students from other universities and colleges. I was able to get copies of the books I needed and was waiting for
One year later.I was walking towards the Main Building/Science library of the University of Saint Thomas to look through additional materials for our group presentation scheduled for next week. It was a hectic year for the Freshman AB class, and I was looking forward to a relaxing summer. I saw my classmates, Arnold and Eden already in our favorite table and I quickly sat on the chair across the two. Both smiled at me and proceeded to discuss the materials they were able to get from the undiscovered section of the old library. On the last Friday of March that year, the class of 1986 graduated. Surrounded by excited classmates and proud parents and companions, I felt empty that day. Even when my Nanay shed tears and Bree took pictures of me on the stage with my diploma and mother in tow, I barely mustered a tiny grin. Because we all brought our family members, my classmates and I were only able to say quick goodbyes before we left the venue. I quick
Classes were resumed several days after the peaceful EDSA Revolution of February 25, 1986. My classmates were very excited to see each other again. The school officials welcomed us back during our morning assembly, with the principal asking the students to go on studying and not worry about the political situation. He also reminded us seniors of our remaining projects and upcoming examinations, which effectively gave us the direction we needed. My clasmates worked like crazy, and we extended our stay at the campus in order to finish all our projects. Every minute with them counts. Lance and I went home late, and we see each other during weekends, too. Bree talked to me one night. She looked subdued, and I was a bit concerned. "How are you doing at school? Ready for college?" she asked. I nodded vigorously. "Of course! It's just the final examinations and we are all set to graduate. Don't worry. I just need to wait for the documents i need to submit to UST and I
Lance and I quickly went out to join our group. were on the dancefloor, gyrating to the class favorite song, "Always something there to remind me." ValAll of themand Charm were with us, along with some of their friends and we made a circle. Pairs danced off amidst loud cheers and laughter. Charm hugged me, and thoughts of Alfred were forgotten. It was the Seniors' night, our special event before graduation, and no one can take the excitement away from us. Lance and I embraced and danced, and our friends rejoiced with us. I saw Izzie dancing with Archer, Noah and Val stealing the show along with Jon and Ira, and that was how Class IV-1 spent their last JS Prom together. At past 1:00am, we left the campus. We saw a store still open, and we stayed for half an hour drinking cold soda and eating biscuits while we recounted everything that happened that night. We said goodnight to each other, and went home. Lance and I sat inside his car, and we talked about what
That year's JS Prom was austere. The antsy political situation was felt everywhere and our principal almost cancelled the event. However, the majority of the students and their parents implored the school authorities to push through with it. Certainly, it was an annual event that most juniors and seniors look forward to and make up the bulk of their high school memories. We were encouraged to wear second-hand gowns and tuxedoes or rent-out from shops that give out discounts and promos to students. Noah comically said even with the end of the world coming, we must have our prom. I looked a myself at our old mirror, checking my simple make-up and my altered pink gown. Lance will be coming any time now, and I quickly picked up my purse and ran outside. I saw him parking the car and I quickly went to the passenger side. I slid in, and kissed him on the cheek. "I think we need to go now or we'll be late for registration. Archer already went to Izzie's house ea
Lance's act of courage was the trending topic the following week, as the bubbly boys and girls of Section IV-1 excitedly recounted to everyone who cared to listen how he quickly ran down the treacherous slope to save me from harm. He became even more popular and awarded a few days later with the CAT Medal of Bravery which was a first. It may have been an embarrasing time for me, but Lance would tell everyone that he only thought of saving me, and he thought of nothing else. I imagined how he must have looked like, almost flying down the hill to be able to catch up to a helpless me. So dreamy and handsome, and so brave. I felt so lucky to have the bravest boy at my side. The next few weeks was both busy and exciting. The holiday season was coming and everyone of us was rushing to complete school activities and projects. We also took college entrance examinations in our chosen universities and colleges. Izzie was becoming distracted, with her university res
