As I was walking towards the girls’ locker/restroom to change into our PE Uniform, Charm grabbed me. “Hey, watch it!” Charm giggled and said, “The volleyball tryouts will be held this afternoon. Let’s go for it!” I gasped “But I don’t have a spare shirt!” Val squeezed in and said “But we do have our PE shirts and sneakers on, right? I think we’re good.” We went to the registration table and signed our names. We sat on the bleachers’ area and watched as the PE Teachers conducted tryouts for the AM and PM volleyball teams for Freshman and Sophomore. The Juniors and Seniors would have theirs in the afternoon. I saw a lot of girls trying out in their old volleyball jerseys. ‘And all I’m wearing is this crappy P.E. t-shirt.’ I badly wanted to run to the store to buy another shirt but I don’t have spare cash at the moment. Even Val and Charm were wearing other volleyball jerseys in amazing colors. I bit my lip. The teachers were calling the names of the Freshman students and proceeded to test them in the basics. I sighed and tied up my hair and thought, ‘ I just need to show them my tossing and receiving skills. I’m better than some of these girls, anyway. And I got ample training in Sta. Maria Academy, under the tutelage of the winning high school coach Beta. I can do this.’ I sat down with Charm and Val to wait for our tryouts.
After more than an hour of waiting, the teachers called the Sophomore students. We were asked to do our serves. Then we were divided into groups of 6 and given 10 minutes to play. I went straight to the setter’s place (those days, it was called Tosser) as that was my old post. Charm took on the Spiker’s post (now known as Hitter). Val became our cheerleader. Another girl named Felicia was a good all-around player who would give me easy balls which made my tossing the ball to the spikers better. I realized all three of us were playing so fluidly we won the set. The teacher asked us to stay behind. Time passed by and the teachers called out the teams that would be composed of AM (morning sections) and PM (afternoon sections) teams for Freshman and Sophomore, totalling 4 teams composed of 12 players with 3 back-ups. We screamed when we realized we made it to the AM Sophomore Team. Felicia was also in the same line-up. We got so excited I forgot my initial apprehension about my shirt. I also met the other players and after being given the schedule of practices, we left the court. Val would be trying out for the Sophomore Boys AM team the next day and we will be cheering him on. The teacher also got our measurements and sent us off. Charm became bubbly after that. She ignored the nasty looks sent her way by girls from Section II-2 who would always badmouth her. “You look so excited, Charm. I guess volleyball is also your passion.” She smiled and said, ”At least, this school won’t be so boring. I am so looking forward to our games. And don’t forget to bring spare jerseys tomorrow.” I giggled and said, “Yes, of course. And extra shorts or jogging pants.” Val butted in, “I have plenty of jerseys. I can bring those and let you look.” I stared at him, “But you’re so thin, and those must be boys’ jerseys.” Val sniggered. “You can fit it those and some are unisex, so don’t worry.”
Val also got in the boys’ team, along with Noah and Romi. The three played well and provided comic relief in that group. Students would cheer for them as they played gracefully against stronger counterparts. They would do a quick ramp on the court before taking start of each game. They became the darling trio of the sport. Everytime their team wold play, the whole court were filled with cheering students. For the girls’ team, we played as a team and won our games versus the PM team and the Freshman teams. Sadly, we lost to the more experienced Junior and Senior Girls’ teams and ended our run with 3 wins - 4 losses card. Charm was despondent when the games ended. She would always come alive during our games and hooked so many boys' attention. Boys would flock to our games and try to get her number.
My sister also played for the Senior AM girls’ team and won the “Best Receiver” honors. As usual, she became a popular student and also got the attention of the guys. She would ignore me in school and go home with different boys in tow. Once I saw her walking with that year’s top candidate for Mr. Valentine, Rowell. They looked so cute that people would stop and just stare at the couple.
“So who’s that? Rowell? Rhymes with Noel,” I snickered. “Who is Noel?” she said while brushing her hair. We were then at home that weekend, and she was dressing up to watch movies with her new school friends. I scratched my chin while staring at her, chewing on gum. She looked so pretty in her white top, tucked in blue jeans and Tretorn sneakers. Mica was never a “girly” one: she was into sports so she usually garbs herself in casual, easy-to-move-in clothing and sportswear. I try to emulate her clothing style, but my height simply gets in the way. She picked up her bag and went out. The phone rang. I rushed down and picked it up. “Hello?” “Hey, what are you doing?” Charm drawled. “Nothing, there’s no one here.” “Want to watch that new movie Amityville? “ I gasped. “Oh Yes! But I don't have enough money here.” Charm laughed “Come on, be ready in 30 minutes and meet me at Ana’s Betamax store. I’ll be your manager today.” I rushed to the toilet, showered quickly, and changed into a pink top tucked into my dark blue baggy pants and cream espadrilles. I ran to the store and waited for Charm. Soon enough, a taxi parked and Charm yelled at me “Get in!” I went inside and plonked beside Charm. “How about Val?” “He is busy dating. We might run into him if we watch at Greenbelt.” I sniffed. “Good old Val. He has a mile-long list of boyfriends. Me? I’d end up an old maid if I don’t transform soon.” Charm giggled. “Be patient. You’re a late bloomer. The youngest siblings in the family usually are.” I mumbled, “I just cannot go around with my Ate Mica. People think I’m her leftover and keep comparing my looks to her. Life is unfair.”
The taxi stopped at the Quad entrance and Charm paid the fare. She grabbed my hand and said “Let’s run. We might still catch the first showing.” We ran to the ticket counter, bought tickets, and went to the popcorn stand. She bought two popcorn and coke and we rushed to the entrance of the movie house. We were able to get two seats near the walkway. The movie was about to start. It was pretty scary and I forgot all my problems, totally concentrating on the thrilling film. Charm nudged me and pointed at some people coming in. I could not make it out at first but saw Lance, Jon, and Archer. Charm whispered, “Maybe we should sit near them, we won’t look so dull here.” I sighed “I just want to watch in silence. Let’s just stay here.” Too late: Charm was already waving her hand at the group, who saw her. Lance saw me, and he quickly went to us. Jon and Archer followed. Charm pointed at the empty seats beside me, so Lance sat down and the two took the others. He whispered “Hi there. You should have told me you’re watching this today.” I was surprised and whispered back “I really don’t have any plans. Charm just called me earlier and this is kinda spontaneous.” I offered my popcorn and he took some. I was really into the movie so I was quiet and did not anymore pay attention to them. Charm transferred to the seat between Jon and Archer. They were whispering and I ignored them. Apparently, they were planning where to go next. Of course, I cannot come. I thought of my limited budget so I did not participate in their conversation.
Pretty soon, the lights turned on. I got up and signaled to them that I needed to go to the restroom. Charm followed me. “The guys would like to check out the gaming zone and have snacks. I stopped and looked at her. “But I don’t have enough money. I only have a return jeepney fare and some cash to buy cold drinks.” Charm smiled “Let’s look first at our options. After all, the cutest guys in our year are with us.” I turned and said “I don’t really get why you are so excited. They are our classmates and we see them practically every day.” Charm grabbed me and said “Yes, but today is Saturday and we get to be with these cuties all by ourselves. I like how they look without those stupid uniforms.” We saw the boys waiting for us and we walked towards the gaming zone. Charm and Jon were chatting like crazy, while Archer was just looking around shops. Lance walked with me and asked, “Do you usually go out on weekends?” “Not really, I don’t have enough allowance to spend so I just stay at home. Except when my sisters go out and let me tag along with them.” He chuckled. “How about you guys? Do you always go out? Do you go on dates?” He replied “We do go out on weekends. We play basketball, we come here or go to Holiday Plaza and just bum around. Nothing special, really. And I don’t have time to date. Not sure about Jon, though.” I glanced at him, thinking he was pulling my leg. “Are you serious? I thought all of you have girlfriends already.” Lance looked startled then smiled. “Why would you think that? I don’t have a girlfriend.” I shrugged and went on, “Well, your gang is pretty popular in school. And you all look cute and charming. Girls practically are begging for you to go out with them. “ He was quiet then said, “I didn’t know that. So all girls would like to go out with us? How about you?” “Me? No, of course not. You’re my classmates. I bet it’s different with the girls from the other sections.” Lance became quiet and Archer said “I’m hungry. How about Dunkin’ Donuts?” Jon and Charm agreed, so we proceeded to the Dunkin’ Donuts place on the 2nd Floor. They were ordering, and I went to an empty table. Lance came and said, “What do you like?” I remembered not having enough money so I said “Nothing, just cold drinks, please .” “Do you like the one with Bavarian cream inside?” I nodded and he went back to the counter. ‘Oh well. I’ll just tell Charm to pay it first and will settle it with her.’ The noisy group came back with trays of doughnuts and drinks. Lance gave me my set, then sat beside me. Jon and Charm continued with their noisy banter. Archer asked me “Where’s the other part of your team - Val?”
“Oh, he has a date. Unlike us.”
“Really? So the two pretty girls don’t have dates and Val has one? That’s a first.” Archer snickered.
“I am not pretty. Charm here, though, has boys lining up. Not sure why she has no date today.”
Charm butted in “It’s my choice to be with my dear best friend. I am getting tired of those boys.” She pouted so prettily. Jon replied “Well, we are so lucky to be with you today. And I thought it would be boring with Lance and Archer here.”
Suddenly, Lance answered “But you are pretty. I bet you just don’t know it.” He looked at me and I was flabbergasted. I drank my chocolate drink and tried to answer but gagged. Charm came to my rescue and said, “you’re right - she is one clueless girl.” They laughed and went on eating. They talked about the next assignment, the Finals coming up, and other school topics. I was quiet, thinking of what Lance said. ‘Me, pretty? Since when did I become one? Something’s definitely wrong with his eyes.’
Going home, Charm rode a cab while Jon and Archer went to the bus stop. Lance walked me to the jeepney stop and waited with me for the next jeepney ride going Evangelista Avenue. The jeep came and I went in and took a seat. I was surprised to see Lance coming in, and took the seat next to me. “Are you coming with me?”
“Yes, I lived in Kamias St. And you are getting off A. Baranda St., right?”
How did Lance know where I live? I racked my brains as to when I mentioned it to him.
“I saw you walking several times from the Betamax shop and the talipapa (small wet market).”
“Ohhh. Yes, my brother has membership in that store. And I always buy pork barbecue in the talipapa because it’s tasty and cheap.”
He laughed “My house is just a few blocks away from yours, so we are neighbors. We can actually go to school or go back home together.”
“Really? That’s so nice. It tends to get boring riding alone.”
Before we knew it, the jeep stopped by his house which was just along the road. He paid for our fare then said “So it’s a date. You and I are going to school together from now on. Bye.”
I was quiet and mulled over what he said. ‘How can that be? The jeep route going to school starts from our street so does it mean I have to be the one to pick him up?’
As I prepared for school the next day, I thought of what he said. How can we ride together when we did not even firm up the details? Like who picks up whom? What time? I shrugged and went to bed. Let him figure out, he was the one to come up with such a crazy idea.
Monday. Mica was still in the shower but told me I can go ahead. I quickly put on my uniform, brushed my still wet hair, put on powder, and grabbed my bag. I do not want to be tardy and the jeepney rides usually get full before 6:30 a.m. I asked Nanay for my weekly allowance then said goodbye.I walked quickly to the jeepney stop and lined up. I was daydreaming and yawning when someone tapped me lightly on the shoulder. It was Lance. He was so cute and as usual, impeccably dressed in spotless polo and well-ironed pants. He had his blue backpack with him. I gaped and said “Hey, you’re here. Shouldn’t you be at Kamias St.?”“I told you we are going to school together, right? So it means I have to be here instead.”“Why? You walked blocks away from
Val approached me at the cafeteria and pulled me out of line. “Hey! I was almost near the food display!”I nearly screamed at him. Val ignored my protestations and whispered, “Have you seen our dear old friend Charm?”“Not really, she bolted out of the room as soon as the bell rang.”“And you did not bother following her?”“Why should I? Maybe she’s going to meet someone. And I need to buy snacks. I’m starving.”Val rolled his eyes and said, “That intense girl whats-her-name from Section 3 and her gang followed her to the restroom and I heard a screaming match!”I gaped at him, “Really? I didn’t know. Let’s go find
Browsing through the book rack, I was engrossed in the books of Stephen King. He was really a prolific writer and his stories contain both horror and humor of sorts. I really like him, and he belonged to my favorite circle of writers and novelists. Roald Dahl, C.S. Lewis, the list goes on. It was a quiet Saturday, and I decided to go to the National Bookstore in Quad, Makati. I was just alone, and I told Nanay I will be back a little after lunch. I only intended to buy some school supplies and t-shirts. I looked around the store and felt inundated with books. As there were new books displayed, I got so immersed in browsing through the synopsis and the first few chapters that I forgot the time. It was already past 1:00 pm when I finally left the store with my purchases. I felt the pangs of hunger. I was thinking of whether to buy something to eat or just go home when I heard my name called.
Charm was waiting for Val and me so eagerly when I came to school. I noticed she had a new hairstyle, slightly wavy and shorter. She looked so pretty. “Good morning. Why do you look so edgy today?” I sat on the bench beside her. “Let’s wait for Val first,” she breathed. Pretty soon, Val arrived and immediately came to us. “So, what’s up? Charm, I can sense that you are about to burst with some news. If it is good, go ahead and tell us. If not, I am leaving.” Charm frowned at him, then said, “I have a new boyfriend.” I looked at her. “Again?”“What do you mean again? He is my first one here in our school. His name is Gio, our senior from Section 15.” I can see how proud she was. After all, Gio was our senior and may have enough popularity points to gain her attention. “Congratulations! At least you&rs
Friday. Val and Charm were both looking at watching a movie after class. I told them I cannot go. I promised myself to devote my time reviewing for the next two weeks before the Finals.“We still have time to study. You can do that tomorrow, Saturday.” Val said. We were going to the ladies’ room as Charm wanted to change into civilian clothing before leaving for the mall. Val already changed into his plain, black shirt and tucked his polo inside his bag. I was just tagging along, ready to go home. “I know, but every minute counts. Remember we need to get an average of 88% to maintain our class ranking and stay with Section 1.” I sighed. I was getting anxious. Val was thoughtful, then said “I think my average is between 86-87% at this point. I only need to get a 90% on 3 subjects with the quizzes next week and get the same on our Finals.” I grumble
I was late coming in that Monday. Traffic was heavy and I had to wait for Mica so we could go to school together. I sneaked past the guard who was busy accosting some students not wearing IDs. I rushed over to our line and made it just before the flag ceremony. I breathed in a sigh of relief. I looked at Charm and Val, who were chatting in the middle of the line. I squeezed in to join them. “Hi. So, did Lance call you?” Val asked. I was astonished. “Why?” Charm giggled. “I told you last Friday night, right? We saw them with some pretty girls from that exclusive school in Makati.” Val raised his eyebrows at me. “Oh, yes, I talked to him. He came to our house last Saturday. We spent the afternoon studying. One of the girls was a cousin of Jon,” I said casually. I giggled at their expression. They looked so comical. Val’s mouth was agape, while Charm’s eyebrows were furrowed. Lance suddenly came over and sai
Finals Week. The culmination of months of preparation and sacrificing weekend jaunts or gimmicks with friends. The final countdown. I massaged my forehead and stretched my arms after I completed answering my last test paper. I did what I could, and I will just have to wait and pray for positive results. I glanced at Charm and Val. Their heads were still bowed down, furiously answering the questions on their respective papers. I looked around and saw Izzie, Lance, Archer, Jon, Noah, and about half of the class were still not done with their tests. The last subject was Reading and Comprehension, my favorite. Our teacher Ma’am Decena shooed me out as I handed my paper. I grabbed my bag and stepped outside. I saw Dahlia, Len, Julie, and Ayene outside, comparing notes. This was the Honors circle, and I was pondering on why I was in the same group. Len saw me and shrieked, “I knew you would finish up early. Those questions and essays were just a
Friday was the last day of school. I brought an extra set of casual clothing with me just in case the class decides to carry on with the proposed last-day film watching. I rode to school with Mica, as all seniors need to get ready for their graduation exercises. I saw her run over to her section, and the Senior students were occupying a big chunk of the school grounds for their rehearsal. Members of the Music Club were near the platform, testing their musical instruments. I saw Lance carrying a big, black bag. I remember he was a member of the Club and plays the keyboard. I went up to our room and immediately looked for Charm and Val. They were roaming around the hallway that morning, checking in with other section students. Our room was also lively with discussions on how to spend the last day of school. I placed my bag on my seat then ran out to join Val and Charm. We did not have any classes, as the faculty was busy preparing for the graduation eve
I always felt like I was just a regular guy. Growing up, my parents would shower me with their undivided attention as I was the only boy. My older sister Terry "bullied" me when we were kids, and because of her, I was a bit shy around girls. I just liked hanging around with noisy guys like Jon and Ira, as I felt they "protected" me. I had crushes, but never really told any girl I liked her. Jon joked that the girl must be the one to court me, for I usually clamped up around them. That is, until I met Nia. During our Sophomore year, I heard heard rumors about a girl who transferred to our coed school from an exclusive girls' school. My curiosity was piqued. I felt bad hearing some of them making fun of the girl we have yet to meet. I saw new faces in the room and I asked Ira casually if the new girl had arrived. "Nope, I don't think she's here yet. Those new students came from co-ed schools as well," he replied. I sat down, feeling disappointed. Suddenly, I saw a girl stood b
I was startled to hear my office phone ringing continuously. I picked it up quickly and breathlessly said, "Hello?" "Hello, Nia? Izzie here. What time are you ready? We need to go see Noah immediately at the precinct." I checked my watch and responded, "I can wrap up now and go there. I'll meet you at the mall then we go directly to the precinct. How about the others?" I heard Izzie sighed and said, "Ayene, Leny and Carly went there an hour ago. Ira and Enzo will also proceed there in a bit. I'd like to talk to Noah. He must be really scared." "Don't worry. Buy some snacks, towels, toiletries for him, and I'll be there in a jiffy." I quickly drove to the mall to pick up Izzie. I saw her waiting for me at the mall entrance and quickly stopped at the curb and opened the door. She came in, hugged me and closed the door. She started chatting about Noah. "I told him to resign from that stupid job. He was so stressed out for months, an
"I will not take No again for an answer, Nia," my friend Naomi said crispily over the phone. I was staring at my computer and typing endless memos for my boss who was the senior vice president for Corporate Banking of a leading universal bank. My head was tilted, skillfully balancing the receiver while leafing through the pages of the draft. I was hired as an assistant and working with the bank for nearly 3 years. I met Naomi while I was an intern for a professional advertising executive and she was then his assistant. I liked her because of her feisty nature. "I already met the guy and he seems promising. But do I need to go into another date with him? I am very busy," I answered. Naomi set me up on a blind date with Ervin who was an account executive working for a big pharmaceutical company. "He has been asking why you don't want to give your personal as well as your professional contact number. I think he's got the hots for you. Why don't you give him a chance? Just
Time really flies, and how! I am now a Senior in college, and in just a few months will graduate hopefully with Latin Honors. Soon, I'd be able to keep my promise to Nanay. It was a long arduous journey, but I did it. I only need to pass the remaining exams and defend my thesis. I was so grateful to Jena, Eden, Arnold, and the rest of my classmates who made life in college bearable. As expected, life there was more serious and I learned that you have to take ownership of your decisions and not rely on others. I realized my inner strength and determination to finish what I've started. I sacrificed Lance, and nothing's going to stop me from my goal. A stumbling block indeed came, but I was able to overcome and moved on. A few months ago, I was roaming the University Belt with Jena and Arnold looking for additional sources for our thesis. The place was teeming with students from other universities and colleges. I was able to get copies of the books I needed and was waiting for
One year later.I was walking towards the Main Building/Science library of the University of Saint Thomas to look through additional materials for our group presentation scheduled for next week. It was a hectic year for the Freshman AB class, and I was looking forward to a relaxing summer. I saw my classmates, Arnold and Eden already in our favorite table and I quickly sat on the chair across the two. Both smiled at me and proceeded to discuss the materials they were able to get from the undiscovered section of the old library. On the last Friday of March that year, the class of 1986 graduated. Surrounded by excited classmates and proud parents and companions, I felt empty that day. Even when my Nanay shed tears and Bree took pictures of me on the stage with my diploma and mother in tow, I barely mustered a tiny grin. Because we all brought our family members, my classmates and I were only able to say quick goodbyes before we left the venue. I quick
Classes were resumed several days after the peaceful EDSA Revolution of February 25, 1986. My classmates were very excited to see each other again. The school officials welcomed us back during our morning assembly, with the principal asking the students to go on studying and not worry about the political situation. He also reminded us seniors of our remaining projects and upcoming examinations, which effectively gave us the direction we needed. My clasmates worked like crazy, and we extended our stay at the campus in order to finish all our projects. Every minute with them counts. Lance and I went home late, and we see each other during weekends, too. Bree talked to me one night. She looked subdued, and I was a bit concerned. "How are you doing at school? Ready for college?" she asked. I nodded vigorously. "Of course! It's just the final examinations and we are all set to graduate. Don't worry. I just need to wait for the documents i need to submit to UST and I
Lance and I quickly went out to join our group. were on the dancefloor, gyrating to the class favorite song, "Always something there to remind me." ValAll of themand Charm were with us, along with some of their friends and we made a circle. Pairs danced off amidst loud cheers and laughter. Charm hugged me, and thoughts of Alfred were forgotten. It was the Seniors' night, our special event before graduation, and no one can take the excitement away from us. Lance and I embraced and danced, and our friends rejoiced with us. I saw Izzie dancing with Archer, Noah and Val stealing the show along with Jon and Ira, and that was how Class IV-1 spent their last JS Prom together. At past 1:00am, we left the campus. We saw a store still open, and we stayed for half an hour drinking cold soda and eating biscuits while we recounted everything that happened that night. We said goodnight to each other, and went home. Lance and I sat inside his car, and we talked about what
That year's JS Prom was austere. The antsy political situation was felt everywhere and our principal almost cancelled the event. However, the majority of the students and their parents implored the school authorities to push through with it. Certainly, it was an annual event that most juniors and seniors look forward to and make up the bulk of their high school memories. We were encouraged to wear second-hand gowns and tuxedoes or rent-out from shops that give out discounts and promos to students. Noah comically said even with the end of the world coming, we must have our prom. I looked a myself at our old mirror, checking my simple make-up and my altered pink gown. Lance will be coming any time now, and I quickly picked up my purse and ran outside. I saw him parking the car and I quickly went to the passenger side. I slid in, and kissed him on the cheek. "I think we need to go now or we'll be late for registration. Archer already went to Izzie's house ea
Lance's act of courage was the trending topic the following week, as the bubbly boys and girls of Section IV-1 excitedly recounted to everyone who cared to listen how he quickly ran down the treacherous slope to save me from harm. He became even more popular and awarded a few days later with the CAT Medal of Bravery which was a first. It may have been an embarrasing time for me, but Lance would tell everyone that he only thought of saving me, and he thought of nothing else. I imagined how he must have looked like, almost flying down the hill to be able to catch up to a helpless me. So dreamy and handsome, and so brave. I felt so lucky to have the bravest boy at my side. The next few weeks was both busy and exciting. The holiday season was coming and everyone of us was rushing to complete school activities and projects. We also took college entrance examinations in our chosen universities and colleges. Izzie was becoming distracted, with her university res
