Chapter One
^ELENA^ I stared at the pregnancy test in my trembling hands with mixed feelings. Two dark pink lines. Although the result is undoubtedly positive, I'm still not sure what was the appropriate reaction for me– should I be happy or sad? In the eyes of the world, I was married to the love of my life– at least that’s what I used to think previously. But in the three years of our marriage, Lucas Brown has always treated me like a stranger. Beep! The shrill sound of a message alert broke through my thoughts. “Elena, I just sent you $500k. Please come to the hospital immediately. Aurora needs blood.” Aurora… I clenched the phone, my nails digging into my palm till the extent of drawing blood; but that was nothing compared to the pain I was going through. I felt like I had been pierced in the chest with a knife. The message was sent by “Hubby”, and that's what hurts the most. Right now, it feels like even his contact name is taunting me with its hollow meaning. In reality, our marriage was more like a contract to Lucas. I'm being treated like a blood bank for Aurora Cruz, Lucas’s childhood friend. The only reason he had agreed to marry me in the first place was because I had AB negative blood type, a rare blood type I shared with his sickly childhood friend, Aurora. This is nothing more than a business transaction to him, because Lucas sends me money each time, to donate blood for Aurora. Or should I say, being forced to sell my blood to her? My stomach churns to think about how many times I've been summoned to the hospital urgently and hooked to a machine for Aurora’s sake. This month alone, I donated blood to her three times, and to be honest, I am already fed up with this arrangement. In addition, I am already pregnant and that wouldn't be good for me and my baby. It was my love for Lucas which compelled me to compromise my own health for saving his precious friend, but I won't take any risks with my baby's health. I was still lost in my thoughts, losing track of time, when my phone chimed. Taking a deep breath, I picked up my cellphone to find a message from an unknown number. “Who could this be?” I mumbled. “Loser, can you spot your husband resting his head on my bosom? He only gets peace in my arms, you know! The earlier you realize that you're nothing more than a plaything for him and a blood bank for me, the better for you.” A bitter laugh escaped my lips as I read the message and opened the picture attached to it, tears stinging my eyes. Of course, it was Lucas with his so-called childhood friend. Aurora was in her blue hospital gown, looking nothing like a patient. Her blond hair was spread out on the pillow, her cheeks pink and her skin shining. In the selfie she had clicked, my husband was fast asleep with his head nuzzled comfortably between Aurora’s breasts. My throat tightened as I struggled to swallow the lump forming there, making every breath difficult. “Plaything?” I mumbled to myself, forcing a weak smile. I stared at the pregnancy test once again, my tears finally dropping on the papers. Would my husband even care about me being pregnant? From the very first day, our relationship has always been about Aurora, she is all that has ever mattered to him. Even now, where is he? Lucas has been in the hospital with Aurora since yesterday, leaving me all alone in the big Mansion. For three years, I have been living like a shadow, trapped in the mansion and growing used to being forgotten and left behind. Ring! Ring! The loud ringing of my phone jolted me out of my daze, this time, it wasn't a message but a phone call. Glancing at the phone screen, my heart sank. The caller ID shows the name Laura, my mother-in-law. Hesitatingly, I picked it up, and immediately, I was almost deafened by the loud yell from Lucas’s mother. “Elena, you slowpoke. Do I always need to remind you of what you should do? Don't you know that my groceries are finished, and the maids are off this week? Who do you think would do the grocery shopping? Me? Or Olivia?” She scoffed. I took a deep breath, and replied. “Mom, I'm really sick. I won't be able to do that.” “What? How dare you talk back to me? My son picked you from the gutters, and now you have the nerve to be so ungrateful! You…” Laura was still talking when I hung the call up with a sigh. In the three years of our marriage, the Brown's resented me so much. I was supposed to be the young madam of the Brown family, but I was treated like a servant. They never accepted me– neither as Lucas's wife, nor as a family member; in their eyes, I'm not even good enough to be a maid. And yet, I have been meek and obedient despite how they humiliated me, in the hopes that things might change one day. As a matter of fact, I have been keeping a weather eye on this marriage. I was not even allowed to work in the family's company, because they thought of me as worthless. According to my sister-in-law, it would be a huge embarrassment if I showed my face to Lucas's business partners and clients. And hence, a housewife and a house help was what I did for the family. Patting my belly softly, I mumbled. “Thank God you're coming into my life, my child. I'll take good care of you.” The thought of my unborn baby was the only thing keeping me afloat, because Lucas’s mother, Laura, and his sister, Olivia, had made it their mission to make my life unbearable. They seized every opportunity to humiliate and make life a living hell for me, and my husband never defends me. His silence stung more than their cruelty… Taking a deep breath, I rose slowly from the couch, struggling with every movement. My body was sore and I could feel a headache coming on because of nausea. The kitchen is just a few steps away, I can manage to get some water to take my pills with. As I gulped the water down, a loud honking sound from outside startled me. It was undoubtedly my husband's car; and as expected, the moment I walked into the sitting room, I saw Lucas seated on the couch. Despite everything, face beamed with smiles as I rushed to him. I couldn't wait to share the good news with him. “Lucas, I have good news. I'm…” Without letting me complete my statement, Lucas grabbed my wrist, his touch rough. “Did you get the money? Come on, let's go to the hospital. Aurora needs blood.” His words hit me like a slap. “Let go of me. Can't you hear me out first?” I snatched my wrist from his grip, my frustration rising to the surface. Grabbing my arms again, Lucas snapped at me. “Whatever it is that you want to tell me can wait. We can talk about it later, Aurora needs a blood transfusion, now.” Before I could say another word, he had already dragged me along with him out of the house. … Immediately upon hearing footsteps approaching her hospital ward, Aurora started panting dramatically, as if she were in extreme pain. “Lucas… I'm in pain.” She mouthed, and he rushed to her side in an instant, leaving me at the door. His brows were furrowed with concern as he patted her hair gently. “Don't worry, you'll be fine. Elena is here to do the blood transfusion, okay?” My hands balled into fists at my sides as I stood there, glaring hard at them. They are behaving so intimately, making me feel like the intruder here… while another woman was smuggling up to my own husband. I couldn't hold back the tears any longer and they now rolled freely down my cheeks. I didn’t even bother to wipe them away, who cares? “Doctor, hurry!” My husband urged the doctor with impatience as he gestured toward me. “Draw her blood. She’s AB negative.” Aurora turned her gaze to me, trying to appear apologetic when I know she is anything but that. I was obviously in anger, and she spoke in a sweet voice, “I apologize for my poor health, Elena. You're always giving me your blood, and Lucas always takes care of me. I swear, I didn't want to be a nuisance for you.” “Can we go now, doctor?” I said flatly, ignoring her and her attempts to manipulate me. I followed the doctor out of the room, feeling like my body was made of lead. I didn't need to be told what to do next, I was already used to the treatment they were giving me. As always, Aurora is always ready to play that pity card. The blood transfusion left me drained, more than usual this time. I was already frail, and after the procedure, the dizziness is hitting me like a punch. I had to steady myself on the edge of the bed, since there is no one else here. How much longer can I keep doing this? I'm in my early stage of pregnancy, yet I have already donated blood for Amelia three times in barely a month. I made my way to the lobby, resting my head against the cool wall. I closed my eyes, waiting for the wave of dizziness to pass, when I heard the faint sound of wheels rolling toward me. A nurse was bringing Aurora out of the wardnon a wheelchair. When they got to me, Aurora signaled the nurse to leave. Aurora’s face was glowing with satisfaction, and as soon as the nurse left, she spoke up. “Can't you see, Elena? You still think he doesn't love me?” She smirked mischievously, her eyes sparkling with happiness. Despite my weak state, I felt my anger rising, I just had to yell at her. “Stay away from my husband.” Upon hearing that, Aurora burst into laughter, throwing her head back. Then, she got up from the wheelchair and approached me, a mocking smile on her lips. “Silly girl, trust me, he'll be my husband soon enough.” Her words stuck in my heart like a dagger, but I didn't want to give her the satisfaction to see me hurt. Without saying a word to her, I got up from the chair and turned to leave. However, Aurora grabbed my arm, twisting it and making me stop in my tracks. “Where are you going? How dare you think you can walk out on me when I'm still talking?” “Let go of me.” I struggled to break free from her grip, but Aurora pushed me hard on the ground. I fell to the ground, wincing in pain. My hands flew to my stomach, groaning. I can feel something wrong… Suddenly, the door to the hallway creaked open, and Aurora, quick as ever, threw herself to the ground beside her wheelchair. She started wailing, her screams of pain filling the air. Lucas spotted her immediately, and rushed to her, leaving me in acute pain. Turning to me, Lucas half- yelled. “Elena, what have you done?” “No, I didn't… I…” I tried to speak, but he cut me off, his voice harsh and cold. “Get lost!” Groaning in pain, I tried to get up, but I couldn't muster the strength to even pick myself up from the floor. Lucas sneered at me, his eyes flashing with disgust. “I said, get lost!” He didn’t even look at me as he helped Aurora up, but his eyes flickered momentarily when he spotted the red stain on my white dress. For a moment, he looked confused, but just when he was getting curious, Aurora groaned even harder, pulling his attention back to herself. Without a second thought, he scooped her up in his arms. “Doctor!” He called, running into the ward with Aurora in his arms, leaving me behind, bleeding and in agony. The last thing I remember is seeing the blood soaking through my dress, and I screamed loudly out of panic. And then, I blacked out. The beeping sound of the EKG monitor was the only sound that could be heard in the room when I opened my eyes. Panic returned along with the memories– I quickly clutched my stomach, and turned to see Lucas sitting beside the bed. “My…my baby?” I asked with tears clouding my eyes. Lucas sat beside me, his expression unreadable as he looked at me. “We'll make another baby. Get some rest.”Chapter Two^ELENA^Tears fell freely down my cheeks, hot and relentless. I had just lost my child just because of his precious Aurora, and this is what he has to say to me. “Aurora might need your blood soon. Get some rest.” He said those words, and I quickly turned my gaze at him, still grasping my tummy with both hands. Is this some cruel joke? Or an insult?“You bastard! I must have been blind till now, how come I never knew you're this heartless? How could you ask me to sell my blood to her after what has just happened? If I hadn't been giving her blood all these years, I probably wouldn't have lost our child. Do you understand, our child would have been alive!” I sniffed hard, tears streaming down my face. Lucas didn't flinch, neither did he offer any explanation. He didn't say a word, so I continued. “And as for what happened earlier. Lucas, I didn't touch her. She pushed me, and…”Lucas quickly flared up at me. “Don't be ridiculous, Elena! Why are you still trying to mani
Chapter Three^ELENA^The luxurious gold crust gate was flung open, and our Maybach glided into the huge compound. As soon as the car halted, the guards opened the car door for me. Vincent got down first and walked over to my side, stretched out his hand. I held the hand he was offering as I got out of the car, and a bright smile filled my face as I looked around the large compound. I've missed home so much. A lot has changed. I mean, it has been three solid years since I've been here! Three years since I chose that spineless bastard over my family. How pathetic! What hurts the most is that I left my life of luxury, all this comfort and affection… all for the wrong man. And what did I get in return? Heartbreak and betrayal. I didn't only get maltreated, I also lost my child just because of the Brown's. I'll definitely keep that in mind. “Welcome home, little Lena.” Vincent winked at me, and I hit him playfully on the arm, grinning.“You rascal! I'm no longer little. I almost moth
CAMPBELL'S MANSION.Jason's POVBeing CEO of Campbell’s Group, I was used to getting calls that turned my day upside down. But when I saw Grandpa’s name flash on my phone, I hadn’t expected the bombshell he’d drop.I poured wine into a crystal glass, watching the dark red liquid swirl as I added ice. My phone buzzed, breaking my thoughts.“Hey, kid,” he greeted me, his voice gruff as usual. “Edward’s granddaughter is back in town. You remember her, right?”I took a sip of wine, leaning back in my chair. “Elena Brooks, right? Yeah, we met once three years ago.”“Well, it’s time for you two to get to know each other better,” he said, not even trying to sugarcoat it. “We’re reviving the engagement for the sake of both our family businesses. Get ready for the marriage.”I nearly choked on my drink. “Wait… what? Grandpa, you can’t be serious! I barely know her! And you think I’d just… marry her because it’s good for business?”“Don’t be so dramatic,” he chuckled. “You’re a Campbell, Jason.
BARElena's POVI looked around the bar my eyes catching every bit of the neon rotating lights. As music blared around me, my eyes drifted over the room— Men and women dancers, all stripping each other in too much noise and too little space. A place like this was exactly where I didn’t want to be, but Samantha was adamant. She caused it though! And here I was, trying to make the best of it."Sam, are you sure about this place?" I asked in disgust as I could see ladies being fucked around the corners.Samantha was happily sipping a colorful cocktail."Come on, Elena! You need this. It’s time to let go, especially after everything that jerk put you through!” Samantha shouted over the music, lifting her glass toward me with a sly smile.I sighed, swirling my drink absentmindedly. “I know, Sam, but… I just never thought we’d end like this. It feels like a hole I can’t climb out of.”“Hey, cheer up!” Samantha clinked her glass against mine. “It’s his loss, girl. You're free now! And trust
CASINOElena's POV The casino was alive, lights flashing and music blaring so loud it was nearly impossible to think. I pushed my way through the crowd alongside my cousin, who loved gambling here. We found a quieter spot to sit and watch, his focus already on the tables where men were staking serious money. I sipped my drink, content to let him enjoy his games. Then, a familiar voice cut through the noise, casual yet taunting. “Hey man, seems like you’ve won a lot here,” the voice said. “Let me give you the shock of your life—mind if I join you?” I glanced up, and there was Lucas, strolling in with Aurora holding hands. The sight of the two of them together didn’t surprise me, but the smug looks on their faces did. They looked like they were here to flaunt something, or someone. Guess they are married now.Lucas’s gaze landed on me, and a smirk twisted his lips. “Well, well, Elena! What a surprise. I’m amazed someone like you could afford a place like this.” Aurora’s mocking laug
Jason's POVAs the elevator doors slid shut, I couldn't help but smile at Elena. She’d agreed to dinner, and I wanted to make it something special. "I didn’t know you’d be on board so soon. How’s everything going?" she asked with that charming smile of hers, the kind that made it hard to look away."So far, so good. And now, even better. I wanted to thank you for the job," I replied, trying to keep my tone casual. "Maybe I could treat you to dinner tonight?"Elena chuckled softly. "Oh, I barely did anything—you earned that for yourself.""Still, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity without your help. C'mon, I know a great place. I think you’ll love it." I kept my voice light, but I hoped she’d sense how much I meant it.She hesitated, then giggled. "O…okay, but just so we’re clear, this is just returning the favor. I owe you nothing."I laughed as we reached the lobby, stepping out of the elevator. "See you after work," I said, waving, and she waved back, a hint of warmth in her eyes.
Aurora's POVAs Lucas stormed into the sitting room, the anger was practically radiating off him. His jaw was clenched, and he barely glanced at me before dropping onto the sofa. The silence between us was tense, and I could feel his irritation simmering, aimed at someone else who is, Elena.“Lucas, are you still angry at… Elena?” I asked softly, trying to ease into the conversation, my voice gentle. His gaze flickered over to me, but he shook his head. “Get some rest, Aurora. We’ll talk tomorrow.” His words were short, clipped, and I could tell he was trying to hold back.I walked a little closer, watching him carefully. “I get it—you only just divorced her, and now you’ve already seen her with two different men. It’s hard, isn’t it?” I paused, adding softly, “But, Lucas… Elena never truly loved you.”Lucas looked at me, brow furrowing, taken aback. “What are you saying, Aurora?”I held his gaze, steeling myself. “She only cared about your money,” I said, my hand drifting to his thig
Elena's POVI parked my car in the hospital lot, I fixed my transparent eye glasses as I stepped out. This wasn't where I expected to be today, but something in Lucas’s voice—desperation mixed with guilt—had pushed me here. I had to uncover Aurora's dirty secret.I walked briskly into the hospital lobby, forcing myself to remain calm and focused.I walked to one of the nurse in the outpatient department “Hi, where is Miss Aurora’s room?” I asked politely. The nurse glanced at her computer. “Room 100.”“Thank you,” I nodded and headed down the hallway, keeping my steps purposeful. When I reached Room 100, I took a deep breath before pushing the door open.Inside, Lucas was sitting at Aurora's bedside, his hand wrapped around hers. As usual! His shoulders were hunched, his face filled with happiness as he saw me. Dr. Young was standing beside him, noting some things down on Aurora's hospital folder with a professionally detached expression.“Elena! You’re here,” Lucas exclaimed, standin
Laila’s POV I continued to run through the dark, damp basement, my heart hammering in my chest as the man pursued me relentlessly. Each of my footsteps echoed in the vast, empty space, and I couldn’t believe I had come here alone. What was I thinking? What had possessed me to ignore Lance’s warnings? I should’ve listened to him. Now, here I was, running for my life, the walls closing in around me as I realized I had made a grave mistake. I stumbled, my foot catching on something hidden in the shadows, and fell to the ground. Pain shot through my knees, but I didn’t have the luxury to stop and nurse the wound. The sound of approaching footsteps grew louder, and my pulse quickened. “Hamilton,” I gasped, my voice trembling with fear, “Please… you don’t have to kill me.” I wasn’t sure if I was pleading for my life or bargaining for a way out, but I had to try something. “I’ll give you money! I’ll give you anything you want! I’ll give you back the company!
Laila’s POV Mr. Williams slowly looked at Hamilton, a bitter smile curling at the edges of his lips as he braced himself for what was coming. His eyes, once warm and inviting, now glinted with the realization that he had outlived his usefulness. The situation had shifted drastically, and the cold air seemed to settle heavier with each passing second. "You really thought you could just use me, didn’t you?" Mr. Williams’ voice was raspy but laced with a cold edge of sarcasm. He turned his gaze to Hamilton, his old ally, but now she was nothing more than an enemy. "I was your friend once, Hamilton. A loyal one. And this is how you repay me?" Hamilton stood motionless, her expression frozen in a mask of rage and contempt. "You were never a friend, Mr. Williams," she snapped, her voice sharp and filled with venom. "You were always a means to an end. Nothing more." He raised an eyebrow, his lips twitching into a grimace. "A means to an end...?” he repeated, his voice betraying a tr
Laila’s POV I couldn't believe it. Everything that had happened up until this point felt like it was straight out of a nightmare—only, this was my reality. I was standing in the middle of a dark, damp basement, the air thick with tension and the smell of mildew, and yet, it felt like I was suffocating from the weight of betrayal. Mr. Williams’ words echoed in my mind: "You have one task—get out of this basement alive, and you’ll get the proof." The audacity. I had come here trusting him, believing his promises. He seemed genuine, his voice calm and reassuring when he spoke to me on the phone. But now, standing here, staring at him with a twisted smile on his face, I realized how wrong I had been. How could I have been so naive? I had ignored Nolan’s warning. I should have listened to him. Nolan had always been there for me, offering his wisdom and caution when I needed it most. But instead, I had decided to trust Mr. Williams, thinking that he was the key to uncovering the tru
**Hamilton's POV** I was in my office when the call came in. It was a frantic voice on the other end, trembling with fear and urgency. “Mrs. Hamilton, it’s about your daughter... Mara.” My heart dropped before I even heard the rest of the sentence. “She was pushed... we don’t know who did it, but she was found lying in the kitchen of the Mountain’s Group of Companies... and she’s been... hurt.” My mind couldn’t make sense of the words, but the panic in the voice was clear. They told me Mara was still breathing, just barely. Without wasting a second, I ordered the ambulance to be sent immediately. My hands were shaking as I hung up, feeling like the world was collapsing around me. What happened? Who would do this to my little girl? The journey to the company felt like an eternity. Every second, every heartbeat, was filled with dread. I couldn’t imagine her in that condition. It felt like the air itself had thickened, and the suffocating fear clung to me. When we arrived, I saw her,
Hamilton’s POV We had just been celebrating our latest triumph. The business was thriving, and every new plan we executed was a success. We were stealing Lila’s clients, breaking down her network one piece at a time. The feeling of victory was sweet, and I couldn’t help but smile as Mr. Williams and I sat together, discussing how far we’d come. “I’ll take you out for coffee,” I told Mr. Williams. “Let’s celebrate. We’ve earned it.” He smiled, clearly as pleased with our success as I was. Just as we were settling into the idea of a relaxing break, a sudden, sharp realization hit me. The Redwood Furniture Company, one of our major suppliers, hadn’t responded to our latest inquiry about stock mandates. My stomach turned. We had been relying on them for a crucial shipment, and without it, everything could come crashing down. I glanced at Mr. Williams. “Did they respond to your call?” I asked. He picked up his phone again, dialing the number. But his expression shifted almost immed
**Laila’s POV** I was determined to get to the root of this. I couldn’t let Michael’s lies go unpunished, especially after everything he had done. The moment I heard they had apprehended the criminal, I knew I couldn’t waste time. Without hesitation, I decided to follow Nolan to meet him. As we arrived, I could see the fear in Michael's eyes. He refused to speak unless I gave him something in return. The arrogance in his voice grated on my nerves. "I'll only tell you the truth when you sleep with me," he said, his voice dripping with smugness. I clenched my fists, fighting the surge of anger coursing through me. My company, my reputation, everything I had worked for was hanging by a thread. I was not the type to trust easily, but I had no other choice but to take this step. My heart was pounding, but my face remained steely, betraying no emotion. The knife in my hand gleamed under the dim light, and I stepped closer to him, my eyes narrowing. "Tell me what happened. Why did you d
Laila’s POV I’m so thankful for Nolan. He’s been my anchor, the only person I can trust, especially when everything else around me felt like it was closing in. Every time I thought I couldn’t face the overwhelming pressure of these accusations, he would be there, showing up with that reassuring calm in his eyes. I had no idea what this woman and the man with her were planning. I didn’t understand why they had come to my hotel, why they were accusing my security team of something so vile. But Nolan always seemed to have a way of cutting through the noise. "I’m not making any payments until I’m sure,” I had said to them, trying to stand my ground despite the anger and frustration burning in my chest. “We need an investigation. It’s not right to just pay without proof.” But before I could say more, Nolan had pulled me aside, his voice low and urgent. “It’s a setup, Laila. They’re trying to ruin us, trying to tarnish the reputation of this hotel. Someone has been targeting us from
**Laila's POV:** Every single day, I walk into the office with the heavy weight of uncertainty pressing down on me. It’s as if the universe conspires to test me, one problem at a time, with no relief in sight. And yet, I have no choice but to face it. Someone, somewhere, is working against me. There’s no other explanation. I can feel their eyes on me, their whispers in the shadows. My rivals, my enemies—they are always lurking, waiting for an opening to devour me and, more importantly, my father’s company. I’ve spent my entire life building this empire, and now, with the way things are going, it feels like I’m standing on the edge, waiting to be pushed off. They don’t want me here. They don’t want me to have this second chance that fate has granted me, but I won’t let them take it away. This is my opportunity to prove myself, to show them all that I’m not just some helpless pawn. I’ll fight with everything I have. This morning, as I sat in my office, trying to focus on the endle
**Nolan’s POV:** I was famished—having skipped lunch before the board meeting had left me ravenous. My stomach growled in protest as I drove to the restaurant, hoping to grab something quick for a takeaway. The thought of eating at home, away from the suffocating pressure of work, was a comforting one. When I finally got to the restaurant and grabbed my food, the hunger pangs in my stomach intensified, urging me to hurry. As I walked out, my thoughts drifting back to the exhausting day, something—or rather, someone—made me freeze. A woman bumped into me. I steadied myself and looked up to meet her gaze, and for a moment, I felt a jolt in my chest. She looked exactly like Lila. But something wasn’t right. The woman’s eyes held a different glint—something that Lila’s soft, serene gaze would never possess. I knew in that instant. This wasn’t Lila, it was someone else. But she was wearing her face. As she looked up at me, the seductive smile that stretched across her lips was all wron
