Chapter Three
^ELENA^ The luxurious gold crust gate was flung open, and our Maybach glided into the huge compound. As soon as the car halted, the guards opened the car door for me. Vincent got down first and walked over to my side, stretched out his hand. I held the hand he was offering as I got out of the car, and a bright smile filled my face as I looked around the large compound. I've missed home so much. A lot has changed. I mean, it has been three solid years since I've been here! Three years since I chose that spineless bastard over my family. How pathetic! What hurts the most is that I left my life of luxury, all this comfort and affection… all for the wrong man. And what did I get in return? Heartbreak and betrayal. I didn't only get maltreated, I also lost my child just because of the Brown's. I'll definitely keep that in mind. “Welcome home, little Lena.” Vincent winked at me, and I hit him playfully on the arm, grinning. “You rascal! I'm no longer little. I almost mothered a child.” “Welcome home, Miss Brooks.” The servants and guards chorused. Taking one last sweeping glance at the estate, I proceeded to step into the mansion. “A lot has changed. But the decorations are still tragically off. Vincent, you haven't been doing a good job, huh?” I teased, a playful smirk on my lips as I gestured dramatically, and we both broke out into laughter. The limited edition luxury furniture was lavishly used to decorate the sitting room, which was exceptionally large with a chandelier hanging from the ceiling. My gaze froze in one place and tears circulated in my eyes the moment I spotted my grandfather seated on the couch. George Brooks, the legendary CEO of Brooks Corporation. The one who could influence the entire North city's business world with just a flick of his finger. “Grandpa…” The moment he heard my voice, he dropped everything and quickly walked over to me. I jumped into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably as the floodgates opened wide. I buried my face in his shoulder and he sighed, heartbroken and furious at me, of course. Ever since I was a child, I've never suffered even for a bit. Yet, I was hardly treated better than a slave by the Browns. Worst still, I lost his first great-grandchild because of the Brown's. “So now you're crying, huh? You chose to leave your family three years ago and marry a man we didn't approve of.” My grandpa spoke in a soft yet stern tone while he patted my hair. Raising my head from his shoulder, I sniffed hard, tucking my hair behind my ear. Vincent chipped in, folding his arms across his chest. “My little cousin here has been crying the whole car ride.” Trying to catch my breath, I wiped the tears from my face. “I was wrong. I'm sorry, grandpa! I have divorced him now, ” I mumbled. Nodding his head, grandpa continued. “It's a good thing you have dissolved your marriage to him. A man like you never deserved you anyway, and we have more than enough to support you. But why are you still crying, my child?” “I don't know, grandpa… I just can't seem to forget how I was treated by Lucas and his family.” I replied. “Little Lena, how do you want that bastard ex-husband of yours to die? Tell me, and consider it done.” My grandpa, George fumed; the fire in his eyes making me flinch. Sniffing hard, I shook my head in disagreement. “Grandpa, I don't want you to take revenge for me. I want to take revenge on the Brown's in my own way, I won't spare a single one of their crimes.” “That's my girl. Anyway, I hope you still remember our agreement. You promised me that if that stupid ex-husband of yours didn't love you back within three years, you will come back to us and take over the company. And not to forget, you will marry the fiancé I chose for you.” Wiping off my tears, I forced a smile at him, hoping it looked somewhat genuine. “I'm sure I have a lot to learn, but yes, I am ready to take over the family business.” “Are you now? I'm so impressed, little Lena. You seem to have grown in three years.” Grandpa teased me, although his pride was evident in his eyes. On the other hand, Vincent jumped for joy, clapping his hands as his laughter echoed in the hall. “Thank goodness, you accepted this condition! Finally, the pressure is off my shoulders.” We shared a laugh, and Grandpa was the one who broke the silence first. “Lest I forget, your fiancé from three years ago is still very available. The young man, Jason Campbell, seems to be a perfect husband material. Are you ready to give the engagement another try?” Exhaling deeply, I shook my head. Grandpa's question hung in the air, laden with expectation. “I think I need a little time before I jump into another marriage. The last one was hell, and I haven't gotten over it. But I know marrying into the Campbell family would at least be beneficial for our business.” “My dear Lena, I don't need you to marry for business, all I want is for you to be happy.” Grandpa lovingly stroked my hair while I sobbed, melting into his embrace. “I'll keep that in mind, grandpa.” I'm finally free from the shackles of my past, and I can feel the weight of my old life lifting off my chest. I can breathe openly again. Now, I don't have to think about cooking or cleaning for those ungrateful people. I'm back to being the sophisticated and rich heiress of the Brooks family. To chase after my so-called ‘true love’ I had abandoned my family and friends despite their advice. I had sacrificed everything– my identity, my elite status, and luxury lifestyle, only to destroy my life with my own hands. The blind devotion I had for Lucas had led me straight into the arms of pain and heartbreak. Thankfully, I have finally erased Lucas from my heart bit by bit… despite enduring so much pain from his family and friends. I can't even count the times I had to sell my blood to that lying snake, Aurora, just to survive in the hell he had created for me. “Miss Brooks, your spa session has been booked. Is there anything else you need?” The servants asked, snapping me out of my thoughts. “No, it's fine. You can go.” I forced a smile, and she bowed slightly before leaving. Just when I was about to enter my bathroom, I heard a shrieking scream that scared the hell out of me. “Elena…” Heavy footsteps thundered down the corridor and the door to my bedroom was flung open. Of course, my best friend, Samantha, barged in enthusiastically. Taking a deep breath, I shook my head in disbelief. “Sam, can you stop acting like I was dead and just came back to life? Gosh, you scared the hell out of me.” “Girl, I came as soon as I heard that you're back! I warned you about him, but you refused to listen. But nevermind, I'll decide the punishment for you later on; right now, I’m just so happy that I've finally got my best friend back! And you know what? This calls for celebration.” Samantha sat on the bed with a thump, chattering non-stop. I scratched my head, yawning tiredly. “Sam, I'm really so exhausted. I don't think I'll make it to your so-called ‘welcome party’.” “Duh! You're definitely coming. Look, you're single now. I am sure you'd love the yummy guys at the bar tonight, it's been so long since you have enjoyed some eye candy. Besides, no one is going to know that you are the heiress of the Brooks family.” Sam winked at me, and I rolled my eyes at her audacity. I don't know how I became friends with such a brat. Hesitatingly, I finally relented. “Fine. But you will have to wait for a few minutes. Then, we'll be off.” I shrugged as I walked into the bathroom without waiting for a response. “Hurry. You, wet blanket!” She laughed. An hour later, Samantha and I walked into the bar. The DJ was playing pulsing beats at a deafening volume, and the colorful dimmed lights were blinking and flashing in sync with the electrifying music. But despite the flashy attire of the crowd, both Samantha and I were dressed casually. “Sam, I don't think this is a good idea. Can we just go home?” I tutted loudly.CAMPBELL'S MANSION.Jason's POVBeing CEO of Campbell’s Group, I was used to getting calls that turned my day upside down. But when I saw Grandpa’s name flash on my phone, I hadn’t expected the bombshell he’d drop.I poured wine into a crystal glass, watching the dark red liquid swirl as I added ice. My phone buzzed, breaking my thoughts.“Hey, kid,” he greeted me, his voice gruff as usual. “Edward’s granddaughter is back in town. You remember her, right?”I took a sip of wine, leaning back in my chair. “Elena Brooks, right? Yeah, we met once three years ago.”“Well, it’s time for you two to get to know each other better,” he said, not even trying to sugarcoat it. “We’re reviving the engagement for the sake of both our family businesses. Get ready for the marriage.”I nearly choked on my drink. “Wait… what? Grandpa, you can’t be serious! I barely know her! And you think I’d just… marry her because it’s good for business?”“Don’t be so dramatic,” he chuckled. “You’re a Campbell, Jason.
BARElena's POVI looked around the bar my eyes catching every bit of the neon rotating lights. As music blared around me, my eyes drifted over the room— Men and women dancers, all stripping each other in too much noise and too little space. A place like this was exactly where I didn’t want to be, but Samantha was adamant. She caused it though! And here I was, trying to make the best of it."Sam, are you sure about this place?" I asked in disgust as I could see ladies being fucked around the corners.Samantha was happily sipping a colorful cocktail."Come on, Elena! You need this. It’s time to let go, especially after everything that jerk put you through!” Samantha shouted over the music, lifting her glass toward me with a sly smile.I sighed, swirling my drink absentmindedly. “I know, Sam, but… I just never thought we’d end like this. It feels like a hole I can’t climb out of.”“Hey, cheer up!” Samantha clinked her glass against mine. “It’s his loss, girl. You're free now! And trust
CASINOElena's POV The casino was alive, lights flashing and music blaring so loud it was nearly impossible to think. I pushed my way through the crowd alongside my cousin, who loved gambling here. We found a quieter spot to sit and watch, his focus already on the tables where men were staking serious money. I sipped my drink, content to let him enjoy his games. Then, a familiar voice cut through the noise, casual yet taunting. “Hey man, seems like you’ve won a lot here,” the voice said. “Let me give you the shock of your life—mind if I join you?” I glanced up, and there was Lucas, strolling in with Aurora holding hands. The sight of the two of them together didn’t surprise me, but the smug looks on their faces did. They looked like they were here to flaunt something, or someone. Guess they are married now.Lucas’s gaze landed on me, and a smirk twisted his lips. “Well, well, Elena! What a surprise. I’m amazed someone like you could afford a place like this.” Aurora’s mocking laug
Jason's POVAs the elevator doors slid shut, I couldn't help but smile at Elena. She’d agreed to dinner, and I wanted to make it something special. "I didn’t know you’d be on board so soon. How’s everything going?" she asked with that charming smile of hers, the kind that made it hard to look away."So far, so good. And now, even better. I wanted to thank you for the job," I replied, trying to keep my tone casual. "Maybe I could treat you to dinner tonight?"Elena chuckled softly. "Oh, I barely did anything—you earned that for yourself.""Still, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity without your help. C'mon, I know a great place. I think you’ll love it." I kept my voice light, but I hoped she’d sense how much I meant it.She hesitated, then giggled. "O…okay, but just so we’re clear, this is just returning the favor. I owe you nothing."I laughed as we reached the lobby, stepping out of the elevator. "See you after work," I said, waving, and she waved back, a hint of warmth in her eyes.
Aurora's POVAs Lucas stormed into the sitting room, the anger was practically radiating off him. His jaw was clenched, and he barely glanced at me before dropping onto the sofa. The silence between us was tense, and I could feel his irritation simmering, aimed at someone else who is, Elena.“Lucas, are you still angry at… Elena?” I asked softly, trying to ease into the conversation, my voice gentle. His gaze flickered over to me, but he shook his head. “Get some rest, Aurora. We’ll talk tomorrow.” His words were short, clipped, and I could tell he was trying to hold back.I walked a little closer, watching him carefully. “I get it—you only just divorced her, and now you’ve already seen her with two different men. It’s hard, isn’t it?” I paused, adding softly, “But, Lucas… Elena never truly loved you.”Lucas looked at me, brow furrowing, taken aback. “What are you saying, Aurora?”I held his gaze, steeling myself. “She only cared about your money,” I said, my hand drifting to his thig
Elena's POVI parked my car in the hospital lot, I fixed my transparent eye glasses as I stepped out. This wasn't where I expected to be today, but something in Lucas’s voice—desperation mixed with guilt—had pushed me here. I had to uncover Aurora's dirty secret.I walked briskly into the hospital lobby, forcing myself to remain calm and focused.I walked to one of the nurse in the outpatient department “Hi, where is Miss Aurora’s room?” I asked politely. The nurse glanced at her computer. “Room 100.”“Thank you,” I nodded and headed down the hallway, keeping my steps purposeful. When I reached Room 100, I took a deep breath before pushing the door open.Inside, Lucas was sitting at Aurora's bedside, his hand wrapped around hers. As usual! His shoulders were hunched, his face filled with happiness as he saw me. Dr. Young was standing beside him, noting some things down on Aurora's hospital folder with a professionally detached expression.“Elena! You’re here,” Lucas exclaimed, standin
Elena's POVI parked my car and made my way to the office, hoping for a smooth day. But as soon as I opened the door, there was Samantha, already sitting at my desk with a knowing grin. She was the only one who ever managed to get here before me, and she seemed particularly amused this morning.“Morning, sunshine,” Samantha greeted, a playful glint in her eyes.“Good morning to you too,” I replied, smiling as I noticed a familiar coffee cup on my desk. A little note was stuck to the side: *“Have an amazing day, from Jason.”* I felt warmth rise in my cheeks. Samantha, of course, noticed.“Oh? Jason again? He leaves you coffee every single morning. Think it’s time to call him your ‘little boyfriend,’ don’t you?” She chuckled, folding her arms with a smug look.“Oh, stop. It’s not like that. He leaves you coffee sometimes, too!” I said, brushing it off, even though a small smile crept onto my face.“Maybe, but where’s my *sweet little note?*” Samantha teased, tapping the cup. “The man is
Elena's POVThe day had finally arrived, and I could feel my pulse racing as I took in the sight around me. The entire mansion felt transformed, with every corner draped in elegance. Strings of warm lights and grand chandeliers gave the room a soft, almost dreamlike glow, and the fragrance of fresh roses mingled with the faint notes of jazz floating through the air.I couldn’t deny it—it was beautiful. Perfect, even. But there was a heaviness inside me, a feeling I couldn’t shake, as if something unexpected was waiting just around the corner.Samantha was at my side, as usual, fussing over my hair and adding the finishing touches to my makeup."Look at you!" she beamed, stepping back to admire her work. "You’re stunning, Elena. I swear, your fiancé is going to be head over heels the moment he sees you." She gave me a playful nudge, and I had to laugh despite my nervousness."Well," she continued with a smirk, "I just hope you’re not missing your little boyfriend—Jason, isn’t it? He’s
