9 Escape

Adeline sat on the floor, sighing every few seconds as she stared blankly at the room around her. For the first time in as long as she could remember, she felt like giving up. That thought made her even more angry and disgusted that she even thought of such. She flicked her hair back with a scoff, rolling her eyes. “I’m getting the hell out of here, and nothing is stopping me.”

She slowly got up and marched over to the desk beside her bed, yanking open the drawer. Inside, she found a few rubber bands, a brush, and a hairpin. Her eyes narrowed as she picked up the hairpin, a memory flashing in her mind.

She recalled her father’s survival lessons, especially the one where he taught her how to pick locks with a hairpin in case of emergencies. She chuckled, amazed that something she barely paid attention to could be her way out.

She crouched in front of the door, bending the hairpin carefully until it took the shape she needed. She chuckled to herself as she inserted it into the key
