Adonis slowly opened his eyes, sitting up gently. He stretched his sore body and felt his bones pop in places he never knew was possible.
His eyes took in the familiar white walls, his nose picking up the stench of concentrated antiseptic; even without the continuous beeping of the machine by his side, he'd recognize this place anytime. He had been here more times than should be considered healthy. He stretched once again to be sure he felt no underlying pain. If the throbbing ache in his ribs and light headache were all the injuries sustained, then he was in luck. Honestly, he expected more. The door to the hospital room quietly slid open as though the person on the other side was avoiding making unnecessary noises, and Luca stepped in with a jar of water and a cup in hand. His eyes met Adonis's, and he paused in his steps. He was pissed. Adonis could tell that much from the lack of words the moment he stepped in. "You're up. Good for you." Luca walked over to his bedside and deposited the water on the desk. "One would think you're unhappy about that fact." "Oh really? What gave me away?" Adonis rolled his eyes at his words, which were dripping with sarcasm. "Can I at least get a glass of water before you start your berating?" "Get it yourself." Luca retorted and then went to sit on the only chair in the room. Adonis sighed before moving to pour himself some water. He hurriedly drank cup after cup, almost emptying the jar itself. When he was satisfied, he climbed back onto the bed. "Good to see you can move around just fine. Cara's yet to wake up." He wet his lips "I figured." Luca snapped. "What was going on in your head, Adonis? Why did you turn around? Why did you even come back? We had it under control!" "I was worried!" "About what? You don't think we can handle the situation by ourselves? Because if you did, you'd have stayed back. God Adonis, you didn't have to try and trap the person yourself." "You know that's not what I mean." "Then what?" Luca argued. He couldn't understand why Adonis would put not only himself in danger but also Cara. She was too fragile for their way of life. When he got the call that Adonis had returned, he grew worried. Although there was a break-in, it seemed as though nothing was taken. What if the break-in was just a diversion, and the person was going for something else? The instant he got another call that Adonis and Cara were being followed, he knew he was right. He expected that Adonis would come straight home, but once again, he decided to take matters into his own hands. It took a while to catch up with them due to Adonis's spontaneous action, and by then, the truck driver had escaped. The state he met them in when they got to the site of the accident only increased the level of anxiety he felt. The car had tumbled down a slope and crashed against a tree. He didn't want to imagine what would have happened if the tree hadn't acted like a barrier to stop it from tumbling further. Luca felt his heart get caught in his throat at the news that his friend and wife were nowhere to be seen. It wasn't until they searched around that they found Adonis resting behind a rock, hugging an unconscious Cara to himself. She was barely hanging on. The amount of blood that had pooled around them told Luca that it was taking Adonis a great deal of strength to stay awake himself, yet he refused to let her go. He blinked at Adonis, who had his eyes closed in deep thought. He had never seen him act that way. Not since... Luca sighed. Whoever had planned this must have done his findings because it was practically impossible to get into the estate without getting caught. That or they were betrayed by someone close... "You know what this means, right?" Adonis opened his eyes. "That we have a spy amongst us." "I thought this was going to be the usual way. Simple coronation threats, but it's starting to get complicated, and I can't help but think that the Grecos are involved." Luca reasoned. Adonis closed his eyes once again. He had been doing a lot of thinking since he woke up. Whoever had planned this had one goal: To delay the coronation. Why else would they stage an accident days before? He didn't want to play into their hand, but considering all that had happened within the last few days, having a coronation wasn't the next step. It didn't make sense. It was better to eliminate every threat and protect the family now, or there would be no family at all to rule. He was confused. He didn't know where to start from. There had been a pressing ache in his chest that had refused to go away since the accident. It was a feeling he knew so well. Fear. After all, it was all he experienced during the first few years of his life. He hadn't felt this way in a long time. Not since he stopped being that little boy whose comfort space was the closet. But was it fear for himself? No. He was afraid for Cara. The reason remained unclear, but he was sure about one thing: he was going to protect her with everything he had. He wanted no harm to come to her. That much has been agreed on since he took the hit for her during the incident. There was just one problem. The break-in happened days after she asked for the blueprints. Only a fool would not see the connection, and he wasn't a fool. If the Grecos were at centre of it all, does that mean she's working for them? She had deliberately hidden the fact that they were the ones who killed her father from him... and whatever she had planned, she couldn't do it alone. That means she was either the spy or was working with the spy. No matter the amount of time he thought about it, Adonis still ended up with that conclusion, and this only intensified the ache in his chest. He was not a child and knew the fear meant he was beginning to care for her. But whatever he felt for Cara wasn't sufficient enough to watch his family be betrayed. Adonis was scared of himself for Cara. If she was involved... if she really had a plan to bring his family down... There was no way she could escape his wrath... Nothing came before his family... his brothers. He released a deep sigh, and the door was thrown open. Cecelia darted in, her face soaked in tears as she panted heavily, holding onto her knees for support. The only reason Adonis wasn't sprinting down the hall was the smile on her face. "She's awake. Cara's awake."Cara's POVI don't know how many hours I slept for-but I knew I drifted in and out of consciousness a few times. The first time was after the accident. I wasn't fully awake, but I knew I was being carried by Adonis.I'd recognize his masculine, woody scent anywhere. My vision was blurry, and the pain was stabbing into my bones all over, but I could feel his rapid heartbeat as he breathed heavily. He was injured too. That much I could tell. Then he stopped and gently set me down on the grass before settling beside me. I didn't understand what was going on, but whenever I tried to think about it, my head hurt, so I stopped. Another wave of pain hit me, and just as I was about to lose consciousness again, I felt a soft, warm press on my nape as he pulled me closer. The second time I gained consciousness was only for a short while. My heavy eyes opened for just a minute, and I could see people frantically running around me. I couldn't hear a single thing due to the loud ringing noise in
"So she'll be fine if she just takes her medication. I advise that she take a lot of rest to allow her bone to heal." The doctor said to Adonis, who was sitting beside Cara on the bed.It was the next day, and they were about to be discharged."Are you sure it's okay for her to leave?" Adonis glanced at Cara; she looked worse than he did. Her left leg was wrapped in a crutch, her head in a bandage, and her arm in a cast. "If you're going to be discharged, then I want to be discharged too." Cara harrumphed. The people in the room had silently been watching them bicker back and forth as Adonis had been trying to convince Cara to stay back for the past thirty minutes, but she wasn't having it. He had work piled up from the few days he wasn't around and had yet to fully investigate the break-in scenario, so he decided to head back home. The moment Cara found out, she also decided to leave.Adonis sighed in frustration. He couldn't believe she was already back to arguing with him so quick
A young, beautiful lady lay stark naked on the bed in a room coated with red and black paint. She was on all fours, each hand and leg chained to a hook at each corner of the bed.Her fair skin had several lines of red and was bruised all over, and her head bobbed violently, influencing the moment of the bed as it slammed against the wall, saliva dripping down her chin. From the back, you could see wetness dripping down her legs, and whenever she tried to pull it together, the chains prevented it.Choking sounds and breathless moans could be heard all over the room as her eyes continually rolled to the back of her head.At the foot of the bed on a sofa sat a naked man, watching the scene in front of him with so much pleasure as he stroked himself."Wider." He instructed, and the lady spread her leg further as far as it could go. A satisfied smirk spread out on his face, and his hand moved faster as he could feel the start of an orgasm. He shuddered in delight, ordering"Faster."And th
"Let's postpone the coronation," Adonis announced to his grandfather.Dimitri's brows pulled down in reply."Why?"Everyone had settled in and things were back to being somewhat normal—if you look past the extra guards and bandaged newly wedded couple. Adonis has gone all out and doubled the security in the estate. It was the next day after their discharge and the day Dimitri would be returning to Italy. He called in his grandson to ask for updates about the attack when he dropped the bombshell.Dimitri found it hard to believe the words he had just heard. Had his grandson become bipolar or was he suffering from multiple personality disorder? A few weeks back he was pleading for the marriage clause to be cancelled and the coronation to be moved up. Two days ago, he was refusing to go on a honeymoon trip because he wanted to be ready for the coronation. Now he doesn't want it anymore? The more he thought about it, the more his eyebrows pulled down, the frown on his face becoming mo
Adonis stomped down the stairs furiously, a confused Luca who didn't know exactly why he was angry, chasing after him.All he knew was they were having a discussion and making good progress until the telephone call. Adonis marched into the living room, his deep voice calling for his wife."Cara?"He got no reply."Adonis, what's going on?" Luca asked, but Adonis ignored him and stalked up to a guard by the door."You! Where's my wife?"The guy looked like he was about to pee in his pants. Although buff, he wasn't a tall guy, and the stare-down he received from Adonis made him feel frightened even though he wasn't the source of Capo's anger. He pointed towards the stairs."Upstairs. Second floor." "Doing what? With who?" Adonis snapped at him."I don't know. She just told me she was expecting someone, and I should send him up when he gets here." Adonis wheeled around and stomped back up the stairs towards the second floor."Adonis wait up! What's going on?" Luca followed closely beh
Luca quietly escorted a fearful Kane to the garage. He took a step back, his gun still pointed at him as he activated the unlock system. The wall pulled back, showing a narrow, dim path that led underground."Get in." He orderedKane followed without a single protest. He believed he had the protection of the Grecos as promised, but he doubted if it was up to this point, so he cooperated.Better to be safe than sorry. They worked down the narrow path, further into the underground tunnel, until they reached a big brass door.Luca knocked twice. Once. Then thrice, and the door was opened from within. He pushed Kane in, causing him to stumble. As soon as he found his footing, Kane's eyes widened at the state of the room.Being used to their way of life, he wasn't surprised that they had an underground basement. In their world, it was a necessary place to conduct violent business without distractions, but the state of the room made him wonder if he'd ever come out of there alive. It was li
Cara's POVI sighed in relief, sinking further into the bathtub as the warm water engulfed my body, soothing my aches. It's been two months since the day Kane came to the mansion for the first time. Two months since I became Mrs. Bernardi, and to say it has been one hell of a roller-coaster would be putting it mildly. Adonis had been the same as always, controlling, chauvinistic, arrogant, and hot-headed, and I was the stubborn one. Although, compared to how we started, there was now a mutual understanding.Something like respect and care between roommates. Nothing more. Except you don't sleep with your roommate at every given chance.Life as Mrs. Bernardi has been good to me. It was nice knowing I could live comfortably without having to worry about survival. The sex, on the other hand, as always, was mind-blowing.We'd bicker back and forth and have intense arguments that always ended with both of us panting heavily on the bed. Sometimes in the bathroom, other times in his study.
Cara's POV"Adonis," I called out softly. "Adonis, get up. You're bleeding."The black shirt he had on was torn in several places, and his left cheek was a little swollen. He had a small but deep cut on the left side of his eyebrow. My eyes scanned his form in search of the main source of the excessive bleeding. "Adonis. Come on." I called again when he didn't reply the first time but got nothing again. No way. He can't be dead, right?I crawled over to his side of the bed, giving him a shake, desperately trying to wake him up."Adonis, are you dead? Please wake up. I'm getting scared." I roughly shook him until he released a groan, popping one eye open."What is it?" He rasped"You're bleeding. We've got to get you to the hospital or call Dr. Bruno. I can't leave you bleeding out like this, please." My voice was heavy with worry and moisture glinting in my eyes. Why was I pleading? The reason was unknown to me too. Adonis grumbled, stiffly dragging himself up the bed to get more
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
