Cara's POV
I don't know how many hours I slept for-but I knew I drifted in and out of consciousness a few times. The first time was after the accident. I wasn't fully awake, but I knew I was being carried by Adonis. I'd recognize his masculine, woody scent anywhere. My vision was blurry, and the pain was stabbing into my bones all over, but I could feel his rapid heartbeat as he breathed heavily. He was injured too. That much I could tell. Then he stopped and gently set me down on the grass before settling beside me. I didn't understand what was going on, but whenever I tried to think about it, my head hurt, so I stopped. Another wave of pain hit me, and just as I was about to lose consciousness again, I felt a soft, warm press on my nape as he pulled me closer. The second time I gained consciousness was only for a short while. My heavy eyes opened for just a minute, and I could see people frantically running around me. I couldn't hear a single thing due to the loud ringing noise in my head, and the pain was worse than before, so I passed out. The third time I came to, I felt a bit better. Less pain and no ringing sound. The room was empty, or so I thought until I heard a voice. A female voice, to be specific, but one I couldn't recognize. The person was on a call, and I tried to open my eyes but couldn't. I couldn't make out the full conversation through the short sentences and monosyllabic replies that were given. "She's still passed out. No. I heard he was awake. No, no one is with me. Hold on, I think she's awake." And then I heard the sound of footsteps get closer. "Cara, can you hear me? Are you awake?" I tried to move my lips, but they felt like they were glued shut. I heard the person speak again. "She's barely awake. No, I don't want to. Are you sure?" The voice went quiet, and then a warm object was placed to my ear. "Cara, can you hear me?" The voice echoed, and I knew right away it was Antonio's. "I got what I wanted, so we'll meet soon. Don't worry; it'll take a while for them to notice it's gone." I wanted to speak. To ask him why he did this. If he wanted something, he could have sneaked in only; the chase was unnecessary. His next words had me thinking he read my mind. "The accident was a distraction. The Bernardis are always on their toes, so I needed to divert their attention somehow. Sorry, you had to be there, mio amore (my love), but if you weren't involved, he would have suspected. I heard he knows you took the blueprint." My finger twitched. How did he know that? Moreover, we were a team. Did he have to do it at the cost of my life? "Anyways, it's a good thing you're fine. But remember, this is what I can do. If I ever find out that you're in with Adonis," he chuckled. "The next one might not be a test." Then the phone was taken away. "I gotta go. Someone's coming." The unknown female hurriedly whispered as I heard the door open. "Hi, Ta....." my head began to pound again. Ta what? No. I shouldn't drift off now. I was so close to hearing the name. I strained my ears, hoping I'd catch something else. "....and you, Cecelia." The female spoke again. Cecelia? Luca's Cecelia? The same person I suspected? But she wasn't the one in the room before, which meant she was the one that walked in. Were they working together? I felt myself drift off for the third time with so many unanswered questions lingering in my mind. When I finally awakened, I knew I was better. My body felt lighter than before; I could still feel aches all over, but this time around, it was bearable. My eyes fluttered open to a bright white light, and I immediately shut them, taking a while to collect my thoughts before I tried again. Was everything I heard true? The phone call had not been a fragment of my imagination but real? Even to the threat at the end? My heart sank. This shows that I have yet to achieve anything. I was still being tossed between the two families. Antonio saw me as a tool he could use and squash anytime, and I was still caught up in Adonis's mess, just like the in very beginning. How could I have been so stupid? Nothing had changed! I've been parading around, enjoying a life that wasn't mine instead of fulfilling my main purpose of being here. This was a wake-up call. I could've died for God's sake. I opened my eyes slowly this time around. If there was ever a chance to get close to Adonis, this was it. The memory of how he held me close during the incident flashed through my mind, and I felt my heart squeeze in my chest. I had been deceiving myself all this while, saying it was just sexual attraction, even though I knew it wasn't. Adonis was beginning to grow on me. Especially since that night at the mansion in Italy. For the first time since I've known him, he behaved selflessly. I never believed he would shield me the way he did. Protect me that way... but I know it doesn't mean he likes me. Adonis may be sexually attracted to me. He might even care for me a tiny bit, but his family came first before anyone. He said it before, and so should mine. I should be independent and take charge of my battles instead of leaning on someone who could fail me at any time. I wouldn't betray my father just because of some flimsy emotion. I would get the chance to love again, but my father's revenge was dependent on this one chance. I heard someone stir beside me, and my eyes moved to the sofa by the wall. Cecelia sat up and let out a big yawn before looking over at me. Our eyes met, and she stared for a while until it clicked that I was indeed awake. She shot right up, tears streaming down her face. I internally scoffed at her pretence. I should trust no one in this mansion; they were good at doing anything to get what they wanted... same attitude and very good actors. Before I knew it, she was at my side. Clasping my hand in hers. "I was worried. You looked so bad, Cara; if Adonis hadn't protected you... he told us, Cara. I'm so sorry. I should... I should get the doctor. And Adonis. He woke up a while ago and had been waiting." She ranted before darting out the door. My chest squeezed at the thought of Adonis's self-sacrifice again. I shouldn't feel this way. I wouldn't have been in that situation if it wasn't for him in the first place. The door opened once again, and the very man who occupied my thoughts stood at the threshold. He didn't come in. Just waiting there as he stared at my lying form in the bed. He was shirtless and had a bandage wrapped across his chest and a cast on his arm. There were also little patches scattered on his face and neck, and apart from that, he looked fine. His hair was dishevelled and had fallen flat over his face. One could tell he had seen better days, but he still looked handsome enough to have any girl fall at his feet. I felt myself come undone under his heavy stare, and moisture glinted in my eyes. I was too tired to get up, and I felt it was fortunate because it was the only thing stopping me from running into his arms. My mind kept on reminding me of my independent woman concept, but it was all down the drain. This was a wake-up call for both of us. It was time to admit what we've been trying to ignore. We both felt something for each other. He might not be sure, but I was. And it scared me. It scared me because when the time comes, I know I'll still choose my revenge over him. Our eyes silently communicated. We both knew the truth, but no one was willing to back down. I cleared my throat. "Come... come here." I croaked out, expecting him to laugh in my face or tell me off for ordering him about it, but he didn't. Instead, he stalked towards me, a slight leap in his steps, and snatched my hands towards his lips. "Never again." He rasped. "I'm so sorry. Never again Bel. I will protect you with everything I have... For as long as you let me." I understood the meaning behind his words. Me too Adonis. Me too."So she'll be fine if she just takes her medication. I advise that she take a lot of rest to allow her bone to heal." The doctor said to Adonis, who was sitting beside Cara on the bed.It was the next day, and they were about to be discharged."Are you sure it's okay for her to leave?" Adonis glanced at Cara; she looked worse than he did. Her left leg was wrapped in a crutch, her head in a bandage, and her arm in a cast. "If you're going to be discharged, then I want to be discharged too." Cara harrumphed. The people in the room had silently been watching them bicker back and forth as Adonis had been trying to convince Cara to stay back for the past thirty minutes, but she wasn't having it. He had work piled up from the few days he wasn't around and had yet to fully investigate the break-in scenario, so he decided to head back home. The moment Cara found out, she also decided to leave.Adonis sighed in frustration. He couldn't believe she was already back to arguing with him so quick
A young, beautiful lady lay stark naked on the bed in a room coated with red and black paint. She was on all fours, each hand and leg chained to a hook at each corner of the bed.Her fair skin had several lines of red and was bruised all over, and her head bobbed violently, influencing the moment of the bed as it slammed against the wall, saliva dripping down her chin. From the back, you could see wetness dripping down her legs, and whenever she tried to pull it together, the chains prevented it.Choking sounds and breathless moans could be heard all over the room as her eyes continually rolled to the back of her head.At the foot of the bed on a sofa sat a naked man, watching the scene in front of him with so much pleasure as he stroked himself."Wider." He instructed, and the lady spread her leg further as far as it could go. A satisfied smirk spread out on his face, and his hand moved faster as he could feel the start of an orgasm. He shuddered in delight, ordering"Faster."And th
"Let's postpone the coronation," Adonis announced to his grandfather.Dimitri's brows pulled down in reply."Why?"Everyone had settled in and things were back to being somewhat normal—if you look past the extra guards and bandaged newly wedded couple. Adonis has gone all out and doubled the security in the estate. It was the next day after their discharge and the day Dimitri would be returning to Italy. He called in his grandson to ask for updates about the attack when he dropped the bombshell.Dimitri found it hard to believe the words he had just heard. Had his grandson become bipolar or was he suffering from multiple personality disorder? A few weeks back he was pleading for the marriage clause to be cancelled and the coronation to be moved up. Two days ago, he was refusing to go on a honeymoon trip because he wanted to be ready for the coronation. Now he doesn't want it anymore? The more he thought about it, the more his eyebrows pulled down, the frown on his face becoming mo
Adonis stomped down the stairs furiously, a confused Luca who didn't know exactly why he was angry, chasing after him.All he knew was they were having a discussion and making good progress until the telephone call. Adonis marched into the living room, his deep voice calling for his wife."Cara?"He got no reply."Adonis, what's going on?" Luca asked, but Adonis ignored him and stalked up to a guard by the door."You! Where's my wife?"The guy looked like he was about to pee in his pants. Although buff, he wasn't a tall guy, and the stare-down he received from Adonis made him feel frightened even though he wasn't the source of Capo's anger. He pointed towards the stairs."Upstairs. Second floor." "Doing what? With who?" Adonis snapped at him."I don't know. She just told me she was expecting someone, and I should send him up when he gets here." Adonis wheeled around and stomped back up the stairs towards the second floor."Adonis wait up! What's going on?" Luca followed closely beh
Luca quietly escorted a fearful Kane to the garage. He took a step back, his gun still pointed at him as he activated the unlock system. The wall pulled back, showing a narrow, dim path that led underground."Get in." He orderedKane followed without a single protest. He believed he had the protection of the Grecos as promised, but he doubted if it was up to this point, so he cooperated.Better to be safe than sorry. They worked down the narrow path, further into the underground tunnel, until they reached a big brass door.Luca knocked twice. Once. Then thrice, and the door was opened from within. He pushed Kane in, causing him to stumble. As soon as he found his footing, Kane's eyes widened at the state of the room.Being used to their way of life, he wasn't surprised that they had an underground basement. In their world, it was a necessary place to conduct violent business without distractions, but the state of the room made him wonder if he'd ever come out of there alive. It was li
Cara's POVI sighed in relief, sinking further into the bathtub as the warm water engulfed my body, soothing my aches. It's been two months since the day Kane came to the mansion for the first time. Two months since I became Mrs. Bernardi, and to say it has been one hell of a roller-coaster would be putting it mildly. Adonis had been the same as always, controlling, chauvinistic, arrogant, and hot-headed, and I was the stubborn one. Although, compared to how we started, there was now a mutual understanding.Something like respect and care between roommates. Nothing more. Except you don't sleep with your roommate at every given chance.Life as Mrs. Bernardi has been good to me. It was nice knowing I could live comfortably without having to worry about survival. The sex, on the other hand, as always, was mind-blowing.We'd bicker back and forth and have intense arguments that always ended with both of us panting heavily on the bed. Sometimes in the bathroom, other times in his study.
Cara's POV"Adonis," I called out softly. "Adonis, get up. You're bleeding."The black shirt he had on was torn in several places, and his left cheek was a little swollen. He had a small but deep cut on the left side of his eyebrow. My eyes scanned his form in search of the main source of the excessive bleeding. "Adonis. Come on." I called again when he didn't reply the first time but got nothing again. No way. He can't be dead, right?I crawled over to his side of the bed, giving him a shake, desperately trying to wake him up."Adonis, are you dead? Please wake up. I'm getting scared." I roughly shook him until he released a groan, popping one eye open."What is it?" He rasped"You're bleeding. We've got to get you to the hospital or call Dr. Bruno. I can't leave you bleeding out like this, please." My voice was heavy with worry and moisture glinting in my eyes. Why was I pleading? The reason was unknown to me too. Adonis grumbled, stiffly dragging himself up the bed to get more
"Babbo (father)?"Little Adonis abruptly sat up from his bed at the sound of a door closing. He was a very light sleeper and usually woke up at the littlest noise."Babbo (father), is that you?" His legs touched the ground as he rubbed at his sleepy eyes. It was his room back in the Italy mansion. The home he grew up in for a while and knew like the back of his hand. He'd come down with a cold the previous day, so his nanny was fast asleep beside him. The cunning little child carefully slipped out, hoping not to be noticed.Getting to the entrance of the hall, he looked around for the expected guard who wasn't at his post. Happily, the six-year-old child trodded the big empty corridors in search of his father. Everyone was asleep, as they should be around midnight, so no one stopped him on the way.He was sure he had heard the sound of a door being shut, but which of the doors? That he didn't know.Adonis walked quickly in the direction of his father's room. That was another thing
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
