Cara's POV
"Adonis," I called out softly. "Adonis, get up. You're bleeding." The black shirt he had on was torn in several places, and his left cheek was a little swollen. He had a small but deep cut on the left side of his eyebrow. My eyes scanned his form in search of the main source of the excessive bleeding. "Adonis. Come on." I called again when he didn't reply the first time but got nothing again. No way. He can't be dead, right? I crawled over to his side of the bed, giving him a shake, desperately trying to wake him up. "Adonis, are you dead? Please wake up. I'm getting scared." I roughly shook him until he released a groan, popping one eye open. "What is it?" He rasped "You're bleeding. We've got to get you to the hospital or call Dr. Bruno. I can't leave you bleeding out like this, please." My voice was heavy with worry and moisture glinting in my eyes. Why was I pleading? The reason was unknown to me too. Adonis grumbled, stiffly dragging himself up the bed to get more comfortable. "I'm tired. Later." "No. You'll bleed out before then." "It's not that serious. I've been through worse." "Well, I've not! Let me help you; it might get infected if you leave it for too long." I begged again, and he exhaled shakily before sitting upright. I had to hold onto him to prevent him from stumbling. His eyes were squinted like he couldn't see well, and his breathing was heavy. I could tell he was in pain but was choosing to ignore it. He leaned on me as I assisted him to the bathroom, to rest on the toilet seat while I rushed around to get the first aid kit and a damp cloth. Now that he was up, I could see the main injury located on his chest as it bled out through his torn clothing. He had his eyes closed as he sat stiffly. "Take off your shirt." "Take it off." He replied, and I didn't need to be told twice. I got in between his legs as I took off what was left of the torn clothes. My eyes met the work of art on his chest that I'd come to love. He still had some leftover bruises from the accident that were yet to heal, but this was different. A big gash ran from the bottom of his pecks to just above his abdomen. What had he gotten himself into? Using the damp cloth in my hand, I wiped his chest, and he placed his hand on my hips in a tight grip. There was nothing sensual about it. Each breath he took was laboured, and I knew he was holding back his pain. It took a while to get him thoroughly cleaned and bandaged up, and I was sure he had fallen asleep by the time I was done. Dropping the last stained wool, I moved to pull out of his hold, but he tightened his grip. "Where are you going?" Adonis asked, his voice sounding rough. "I want to get you some painkillers," I whispered back, my hand combing through his hair. He looked up, gazing into my eyes for the first time since he returned. His hand moved up to touch my face. "Why are you crying?" I touched my face to confirm. Truthfully, it was wet. I had been crying? Why? I decided to go with the truth. "I don't know. I don't know." I repeated. "You came back hurt. I was so worried. Do you know how worried I was? Where the hell have you been? You come back looking..." I couldn't finish my words as a sob raked through me. Why was I crying? Isn't this what I want? Adonis stood to his feet, his grip still on my waist. "I'm fine. Luca got off worse than me." "Luca? Where is he? Does he need help?" I rushed out through my tears, and he hushed me. "He's fine now. I sent Dr. Bruno over to his first." "What happened exactly? Were you attacked or something?" Adonis remained silent. I knew he still didn't trust me, and so did I, but it still stung. Especially when I was crying my eyes out in worry for him. I wiped my tears away. "It's fine. You don't have to tell me. Just... just use some painkillers before you go to bed." I tried to move out of his hold again, but he didn't let me. "Adonis?" My face held a questioning look and he took a step closer to me. "Would you believe me if I said a painkiller would not help me right now? I just want to hold you." My eyes watered once again at the tone of his voice. Why are my ears deceiving me? I refused to let myself think that Adonis had just spoken to me in a voice so soft it brought tears to my eyes. Using the same tone, I replied "But you're injured. You might feel more pain if you sleep while taking a pill." That was also not my voice. I think I might've been possessed. Adonis lovingly rubbed his thumb beneath my eyes. "No. The only pain I feel right now cannot be cured. Let me hold you, Bel." He whispered into my ears, and I felt a shiver go through me. In a daze, I nodded my head and let myself be pulled back into the bedroom. I stood by the bed and watched him take off my clothes gently until I was bare before him, and then he proceeded to make love to me for the first time. It wasn't the usual rough eye-rolling scene. He was so careful, I cried at his tenderness. At one point, I could've sworn I saw a tear slip from his eyes, but I was lost in the trolls of ecstasy, so I couldn't be sure. It was the first time he was letting down his walls. Letting me see him as he truly was, and for the second time since we met, the strange feeling of fear overcame me again. I took in everything he gave and returned in kind. It was a one-of-a-kind night out of many, but it unknowingly prepared me for the next few nights when he decided to let me have a peek into his past."Babbo (father)?"Little Adonis abruptly sat up from his bed at the sound of a door closing. He was a very light sleeper and usually woke up at the littlest noise."Babbo (father), is that you?" His legs touched the ground as he rubbed at his sleepy eyes. It was his room back in the Italy mansion. The home he grew up in for a while and knew like the back of his hand. He'd come down with a cold the previous day, so his nanny was fast asleep beside him. The cunning little child carefully slipped out, hoping not to be noticed.Getting to the entrance of the hall, he looked around for the expected guard who wasn't at his post. Happily, the six-year-old child trodded the big empty corridors in search of his father. Everyone was asleep, as they should be around midnight, so no one stopped him on the way.He was sure he had heard the sound of a door being shut, but which of the doors? That he didn't know.Adonis walked quickly in the direction of his father's room. That was another thing
Cara's POVI woke up to the familiar sound of painful grunts. Or should I say I never really slept? Tossing over, I switched on the bedside lamp.Adonis's brows were pulled down, cold sweat all over his face as he lay stiffly. He was having sleep paralysis again, and this was the third time in three days. Ever since that night...I don't know what to do anymore. I've tried talking to him, but I'll be better off speaking to a fish than Adonis. I've tried reaching out to Luca and Cecelia, but Luca's line hasn't been going through. I'm guessing he's still recovering, and that's justified. Reaching out to Nadia and Dimitri crossed my mind, but I didn't want them to worry. His grunts increased, and I softly shook him awake."Adonis. Adonis wake up." As usual, he didn't, and I tried the second time, more forcefully. "Adonis, wake up!" His eyes flung open, his chest moving up and down in rapid pants as he tried to make sense of his surroundings. I took his hand in mine, rubbing it in comf
"Si Padre (yes, father), I'll come visit soon," Luca said in a low voice. "No. Nothing's wrong; we've just been so busy. Yes, the coronation has been postponed, but there's so much work to do here. You know we've been expanding territory." He took the phone away from his ear to let out a painful groan. Taking quick, rapid breaths until the pain in his abdomen had subsided. He placed the phone back in his ear."Sorry, I didn't get that." He paused, and his father repeated the unheard words. "Yes. Adonis is a born leader. I promise to come visit you with Cecelia soon. Yeah bye. Say hi to Lilian for me." Luca dropped the phone immediately the call ended as though it were a hot, boiling kettle. His two hands went to his abdomen, and he closed his eyes tightly at the pain. It's been three days since they got back from their recent mission. Three days since he'd stepped out of the house. Three days since he'd seen Adonis. The last sentence caused a spark of hurt in his chest. He wasn't
Cecelia was taken aback."What do you mean?" "Don't, what did you mean, me, babe? You know what I'm talking about?" Luca retorted with a glare, which she equally matched."I do not. If I do, I wouldn't be asking." He drew in a calming breath."Who were you on the phone with? What was that all about? You were giving info. about us." She let out a scoff in disbelief."Are you seriously doubting me?" "Stop avoiding the questions and just answer." Cecelia gaped at Luca, appalled at his attitude. She couldn't believe it. He was truly doubting her. She was here taking care of his injured butt, and he was doubting her. "If you must know, I was on a call with Tina. She asked for updates. Here." She dumped her phone in his hand. "You can go through my call log. Since you need evidence for everything I do now." She walked away to the room and began to pack her things. She wasn't going to stay with a man who didn't trust her.Still adamant about what he heard, Luca unlocked her phone and
The light mood in the room disappeared, and Luca felt the previous sense of distress return."Luca I'm worried. I don't know what to do anymore. Ever since the day he got back, he rarely speaks, he rarely eats, and he doesn't do anything but lock himself in his study, only coming out at night. But he can't even sleep." Cara informed him with a worried look."What exactly happened? I need to know to help him. What caused him to drastically change overnight?"Luca released a sigh. He understood what Cara was trying to say and how she felt, but he wasn't in the right position to divulge any kind of information to her. That was Adonis's right."I think I want to know too." Cece piped up. "Baby, I know this is part of your line of work, but I've never seen Adonis react this way. Look at yourself. You may think I didn't notice, but you've been downcast too. Is everything fine? Tell us..."Cara's eyes scanned Luca's face. He might be looking better for someone who had gunshot wounds, but th
Cara got home late that night. She had processed the news she got from Luca and thought of a way to get Adonis to talk. Luca had said it wouldn't be easy, but she was willing to try. It was better than just watching him go through emotions he didn't understand.By the time she stepped into the room, the lights were off, but he wasn't asleep. That much she could tell from the way he was sitting with his back against the headboard and his hands crossed over his chest. Cara was going to tiptoe towards the closet to avoid affecting his semi-relaxed state when he spoke up."It's late. Where are you coming from?" She halted. He was awake. Maybe she didn't have to wait till tomorrow. She turned to look at him and met his intense gaze on her. She had forgotten to close the windows as usual, and the moonlight reflected over his face, highlighting his handsome features and chiseled jaw. Cara met his tired eyes. "I was bored, so I went to check up on Luca." He hummed and closed his eyes agai
Cara ran to Adonis as he broke down. She took him in her arms as his shoulders were trembling seriously, but a sound couldn't be heard from him—just occasional heaves and groans. He cried. She cried. They cried, and when her crying died down, he continued. It was like he had an entire bucket of tears in reserve and wanted to empty it.His continued tears triggered another round for her, and she cried again. It took a while for either of them to stop. Now, they were cuddled up against each other. Adonis had his head on her chest. For the first time in days, he looked less tensed.Cara wondered how long he'd been going around with so many unshed tears. They lay awake in silence, enjoying the sound of drizzling rain that had begun sometime during their outpour. She was giving him time. Time to collect his words and prepare himself to speak. It was, after all, new to him. Opening up to someone that is...When he finally spoke up, it wasn't what she expected."You're still without clothes
Cara sat up on her knees as her fingers traced the long scar in the middle of Adonis's back, the first one she had seen, and her heart squeezed in her chest once again. The rose tattoo was the biggest on his back and spanned across his entire spinal line. His back wasn't rough, but it wasn't completely smooth either. The scars looked to have been thoroughly treated.Maybe that's why it didn't occur to her. She thought. They were not so obvious. Her finger drifted to another one that wasn't as large as the scar beneath the tattoo but was also visible, and she asked."How did you get this one?" "During one of the beatings, he pushed me so hard I crashed into a glass table and it broke," Adonis replied, and a tear rolled down Cara's face again. He didn't even think about the one she was touching first. He just said it like he had it memorized."How did you even know the one I was asking about? Don't tell me you recognize each scar and when you got it." Adonis remained quiet. Cara bro
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
