Cara's POV
I woke up to the familiar sound of painful grunts. Or should I say I never really slept? Tossing over, I switched on the bedside lamp. Adonis's brows were pulled down, cold sweat all over his face as he lay stiffly. He was having sleep paralysis again, and this was the third time in three days. Ever since that night... I don't know what to do anymore. I've tried talking to him, but I'll be better off speaking to a fish than Adonis. I've tried reaching out to Luca and Cecelia, but Luca's line hasn't been going through. I'm guessing he's still recovering, and that's justified. Reaching out to Nadia and Dimitri crossed my mind, but I didn't want them to worry. His grunts increased, and I softly shook him awake. "Adonis. Adonis wake up." As usual, he didn't, and I tried the second time, more forcefully. "Adonis, wake up!" His eyes flung open, his chest moving up and down in rapid pants as he tried to make sense of his surroundings. I took his hand in mine, rubbing it in comfort. "It's fine. I'm here." "Cara?" "Yes, I'm here," I reassured, and he pulled me in for a tight hug. What exactly happened that day? What could have made a man so strong become this emotionally affected? What were the nightmares about? Yesterday he said that word again. "I'm sorry, babbo." Babbo I asked around in hopes that knowing what it meant would cure my curiosity. Father. This was about his father again. I knew Adonis's father was a sensitive topic, but he wasn't this affected before. Whatever happened that night must have triggered this reaction. I pulled away when I felt his heartbeat stabilize, my hand moving to caress his cheek. "Adonis you've got to tell me what this is about. Maybe I can help you." As he had always done, his body stiffened, and he pulled out of my hold. Standing up to head to his study. "Go back to bed. I have work to do." I got up and ran towards the exit, standing in his way. "No. I won't let you leave." He walked up to me with a blank expression "Let me through Cara." "No!" I strongly refused. "I won't let you. You'd go bury yourself in work again and not come out till late. Nothing will change from you avoiding it, Adonis. Aren't you tired of going through the same cycle?" Adonis avoided my eyes, and I went to him. Locking an arm around his waist as I softly placed my other hand on his chest, right above his heart. "We might have started on the wrong foot. Honestly, I still don't like or trust you. But I want to be there for you. For now at least. Talk to me, Adonis. Let me be there for you." He gulped, his Adam's apple bobbing before meeting my gaze with his vulnerable ones. "You want to help me?" He questioned. I gave a small smile in reply, and he dipped his head to give me a small kiss. "Then help me forget." And then he proceeded to make love to me as he had always done since that night. Nothing changed. I decided if I was going to help him, sex wasn't the answer like he believed. I needed to see Luca. **** "Hey, you!" I called. The guard looked around and then pointed at himself to be sure he was the one. "Yes, you. Do you see any other person around? Come over here." I ordered, and he walked up to me, a nervous look on his face. It made me smile. If measured, I'm sure he'll be at least four inches taller than me, but still, I made him weary of himself. I guess I owed it all to being married to their boss. "I haven't seen you around before. Who are you?" "Oh, I was recently hired." I nodded. That explains it then. "Do you need my help? I was told your trainer wouldn't be coming until tomorrow." He asked, and I waved him off. "I need you to take me to Luca's home." His eyes bulged out of their socket. "Boss Romano?" My face scrunched up in amusement. Was that what everyone here called him? "Yeah. Luca." "But I heard he wasn't to be disturbed. He's recovering from the previous mission." "And as the lovely wife of his friend, I'd like to visit him. Now, lead the way." Honestly, I'd have preferred to go there myself, but I didn't know how to. Luca's home wasn't located on the estate, and from the times he's mentioned it during our conversations, it seemed he lived in a penthouse in the city. I just didn't know which. The guard hesitated. "Does Capo Adonis know about this?" I regarded him with cognizance. "Are you insinuating that I'm hiding things from my husband? Or that he doesn't trust me?" "No, ma'am. I just... "he stumbled over his words at my accusatory tone. I held up my arm to silence him. "If you want to confirm, be my guest. He's in his study." The guy took an unconscious step back. Obviously, I knew he wasn't going to check. Everyone knew how sensitive Adonis had been these last few days, and no one wanted to be on the receiving end, so it was better to avoid him. The guard cleared his throat, rephrasing his words. "I apologize, ma'am. Give me a minute to find a replacement, and we can be on our way. I smiled discretely. "What is your name?" "Davis ma'am." I nodded like I was in deep thought. "Good choice, Davis. You do that and meet me in the garage in five. Don't keep me waiting." And then I turned with a triumphant smile on my face. Giving myself a mental pat on the head for not cowering back in fear."Si Padre (yes, father), I'll come visit soon," Luca said in a low voice. "No. Nothing's wrong; we've just been so busy. Yes, the coronation has been postponed, but there's so much work to do here. You know we've been expanding territory." He took the phone away from his ear to let out a painful groan. Taking quick, rapid breaths until the pain in his abdomen had subsided. He placed the phone back in his ear."Sorry, I didn't get that." He paused, and his father repeated the unheard words. "Yes. Adonis is a born leader. I promise to come visit you with Cecelia soon. Yeah bye. Say hi to Lilian for me." Luca dropped the phone immediately the call ended as though it were a hot, boiling kettle. His two hands went to his abdomen, and he closed his eyes tightly at the pain. It's been three days since they got back from their recent mission. Three days since he'd stepped out of the house. Three days since he'd seen Adonis. The last sentence caused a spark of hurt in his chest. He wasn't
Cecelia was taken aback."What do you mean?" "Don't, what did you mean, me, babe? You know what I'm talking about?" Luca retorted with a glare, which she equally matched."I do not. If I do, I wouldn't be asking." He drew in a calming breath."Who were you on the phone with? What was that all about? You were giving info. about us." She let out a scoff in disbelief."Are you seriously doubting me?" "Stop avoiding the questions and just answer." Cecelia gaped at Luca, appalled at his attitude. She couldn't believe it. He was truly doubting her. She was here taking care of his injured butt, and he was doubting her. "If you must know, I was on a call with Tina. She asked for updates. Here." She dumped her phone in his hand. "You can go through my call log. Since you need evidence for everything I do now." She walked away to the room and began to pack her things. She wasn't going to stay with a man who didn't trust her.Still adamant about what he heard, Luca unlocked her phone and
The light mood in the room disappeared, and Luca felt the previous sense of distress return."Luca I'm worried. I don't know what to do anymore. Ever since the day he got back, he rarely speaks, he rarely eats, and he doesn't do anything but lock himself in his study, only coming out at night. But he can't even sleep." Cara informed him with a worried look."What exactly happened? I need to know to help him. What caused him to drastically change overnight?"Luca released a sigh. He understood what Cara was trying to say and how she felt, but he wasn't in the right position to divulge any kind of information to her. That was Adonis's right."I think I want to know too." Cece piped up. "Baby, I know this is part of your line of work, but I've never seen Adonis react this way. Look at yourself. You may think I didn't notice, but you've been downcast too. Is everything fine? Tell us..."Cara's eyes scanned Luca's face. He might be looking better for someone who had gunshot wounds, but th
Cara got home late that night. She had processed the news she got from Luca and thought of a way to get Adonis to talk. Luca had said it wouldn't be easy, but she was willing to try. It was better than just watching him go through emotions he didn't understand.By the time she stepped into the room, the lights were off, but he wasn't asleep. That much she could tell from the way he was sitting with his back against the headboard and his hands crossed over his chest. Cara was going to tiptoe towards the closet to avoid affecting his semi-relaxed state when he spoke up."It's late. Where are you coming from?" She halted. He was awake. Maybe she didn't have to wait till tomorrow. She turned to look at him and met his intense gaze on her. She had forgotten to close the windows as usual, and the moonlight reflected over his face, highlighting his handsome features and chiseled jaw. Cara met his tired eyes. "I was bored, so I went to check up on Luca." He hummed and closed his eyes agai
Cara ran to Adonis as he broke down. She took him in her arms as his shoulders were trembling seriously, but a sound couldn't be heard from him—just occasional heaves and groans. He cried. She cried. They cried, and when her crying died down, he continued. It was like he had an entire bucket of tears in reserve and wanted to empty it.His continued tears triggered another round for her, and she cried again. It took a while for either of them to stop. Now, they were cuddled up against each other. Adonis had his head on her chest. For the first time in days, he looked less tensed.Cara wondered how long he'd been going around with so many unshed tears. They lay awake in silence, enjoying the sound of drizzling rain that had begun sometime during their outpour. She was giving him time. Time to collect his words and prepare himself to speak. It was, after all, new to him. Opening up to someone that is...When he finally spoke up, it wasn't what she expected."You're still without clothes
Cara sat up on her knees as her fingers traced the long scar in the middle of Adonis's back, the first one she had seen, and her heart squeezed in her chest once again. The rose tattoo was the biggest on his back and spanned across his entire spinal line. His back wasn't rough, but it wasn't completely smooth either. The scars looked to have been thoroughly treated.Maybe that's why it didn't occur to her. She thought. They were not so obvious. Her finger drifted to another one that wasn't as large as the scar beneath the tattoo but was also visible, and she asked."How did you get this one?" "During one of the beatings, he pushed me so hard I crashed into a glass table and it broke," Adonis replied, and a tear rolled down Cara's face again. He didn't even think about the one she was touching first. He just said it like he had it memorized."How did you even know the one I was asking about? Don't tell me you recognize each scar and when you got it." Adonis remained quiet. Cara bro
Cara wore a puzzled expression. "If your parents left together, how come only your father was found dead? And where is she now?" It didn't make sense to her. The circumstances around the death seemed sketchy.Adonis peeked down at her, stroking her wild brunette hair, which resulted from their recent vigorous activities. He found it hard to comprehend the situation. How did they get here? From having silly daily bickering to their love-hate relationship... feelings can be very scary.Feelings? Does he feel for her? She got him to do what no one has ever done. Open up. His grandfather tried. His therapist tried. They all tried to bring back the free-spirited, playful little boy he once was, but nothing worked. The closest to him being normal that they could achieve was when he met Luca—the talkative boy. It took a while to let him in, but Luca made him a better person. Before then, he was basically scared of everything. At the littlest sounds, he'd lock himself up in a closet. H
Adonis POV"That's the last of it! Come on guys! Move the truck. We're going home." I heard Luca say to the men as they loaded the final bags into the truck.Looking around me, my eye caught the unconscious figure of three men heaped on one another in front of a warehouse. I took a drag from my joint and puffed.Smoking wasn't something I regularly did but rather when I had a lot on my mind, and I had a lot on my mind.Scratch that, I've had a lot on my mind for a while now. A certain five-foot-five beauty had decided to make it her home. That should be normal. I thought about a lot of things regularly. But the fact that it was rent-free made me unsettled.I don't do anything or give anything for free.I took a drag again. So I decided to go after the shipment myself tonight. Maybe it'd surmise as a distraction. It was a known fact! No one who dares to cross me would be free, but they do it anyway. I shook my head at their stupidity. An entire shipment worth fifty million? Moreover, w
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
