Cara got home late that night. She had processed the news she got from Luca and thought of a way to get Adonis to talk. Luca had said it wouldn't be easy, but she was willing to try.
It was better than just watching him go through emotions he didn't understand. By the time she stepped into the room, the lights were off, but he wasn't asleep. That much she could tell from the way he was sitting with his back against the headboard and his hands crossed over his chest. Cara was going to tiptoe towards the closet to avoid affecting his semi-relaxed state when he spoke up. "It's late. Where are you coming from?" She halted. He was awake. Maybe she didn't have to wait till tomorrow. She turned to look at him and met his intense gaze on her. She had forgotten to close the windows as usual, and the moonlight reflected over his face, highlighting his handsome features and chiseled jaw. Cara met his tired eyes. "I was bored, so I went to check up on Luca." He hummed and closed his eyes again. "Come to bed quickly; I'm waiting for you." She gazed at him; he was relaxed. It was only a matter of time till he fell asleep and the circle began again. This was it. It was time. "Alessandro." She called softly, and he opened his eyes to stare at her. "What is it?" His words sounded as tired as his eyes were. No life. No emotion. Just three plain words. Cara dropped her bag, and it fell to the ground with a thud. "I want you." Adonis watched her in silence. He just stared at her like that for a minute and then, "Come here." He beckoned her over. She didn't waste time; it wasn't like he was going to change his mind, but she had a motive tonight. For now, she was going to let him do his part. An hour later, they both lay side by side, panting heavily as they recovered from their high. Once again, he had made love to her. It was becoming a habit. Adonis rolled over and got off the bed to pull his briefs on. "I'm going to do some work. Go to bed." He announced, and Cara moved to turn on the bedside lamp. She couldn't let him leave. Not yet. "What do you mean you're going to do some work? Shouldn't you get a little sleep?" Adonis huffed, pulling on his pants. "We both know I won't be able to sleep." Cara stood up, ignoring her naked state, and walked up to him. "Adonis, you need to try." Her hand caressed his bare chest, and she strained her eyes for any sign of a scar, but it was no use. The room was too dark, and she needed more light to see it. A shiver went through Adonis, and he peeked down at her. "What are you doing?" Cara feigned a small smile. "What? Can't I touch my husband anymore?" He pinned her with a bored look that said, 'I am not deceived'. "Don't look at me that way." She protested. "You caused this. Who was the person that made me an addict?" The side of Adonis's lips curled up by an inch, and Cara felt a flutter in her belly. It was the closest thing to a smile that he'd had in days. She raised her hand in surrender. "Fine. You can go. Just switch on the lights for me first, please. I need a shower, and I don't want to walk into a wall because I can't find the bathroom." Adonis hummed and turned towards the door with Cara's eyes trailing behind him. Halting on his way to the door, he turned on the switch, and she saw it. The first one. Her eyes widened; she didn't know that she'd sucked in air in a daze, and Adonis turned at the sound. "What?" She raised an arm to point a finger at his back, but no words came out of her mouth. How could she not have seen it when it was this obvious? A long, thin scar covered by a rose tattoo ran down the middle of his back. It was the only one she could see from the distance, so she moved closer to him. Her hand reached out to run over his body, and Adonis watched her with a confused look. Was this the first time she had seen his tattoo? Why was she acting so shocked? Up close, Cara could see the others. Scattered all over his back were various scars of different sizes and lengths. She didn't want to imagine what a person would have to go through to have this much. Luca's words replayed in her head. His chest and back. She took Adonis's arm and jerked him around. He was startled, so she didn't have to use much of her strength. Her eyes scanned his chest, and then she saw one. It was a burn. No. Not a burn. A line of burns that looked to be deliberately created. The scars on his chest looked worse than the ones on his back. The sight brought tears to her eyes. She couldn't imagine the pain. It wasn't until her finger began to trace each one of them that Adonis knew the source of her shock. "Who did this to you? Why would they do this to you? Why would anyone want to do this to anyone? How come I didn't notice it before? How come I didn't notice it before?" She demanded through tears, making Adonis stunned at her attitude. She abruptly took her hands off him and stomped to the bag she had discarded on the floor. Cara was still naked, so her privates bounced with each movement, downplaying her seriousness. "Where is my phone? I'm going to call your grandfather!" She bit out. "How did he allow this to happen? He's supposed to be your family. If he can't protect his family, then he doesn't deserve the power he wields." Adonis marched towards her and snapped the phone out of her hand. "You shouldn't. I am not a child." "Then why did you let this happen? Why didn't you fight back or something?" She cried out, and Adonis looked away. Cara brought her two palms to her face. "I feel so ashamed of myself. I've been with you for a while but I didn't notice. I feel so disgusted with myself. How could I have been so carried away by my pleasure?" She began to pull at her hair. "I thought they were normal tattoos." She pulled harder. "Stop it," Adonis ordered, but she ignored him. It was how she got whenever she was overwhelmed. When the situation became too pressing. She had come back with a new mission to check out those scars. A part of her didn't want to believe what Luca said. There was no way she wouldn't have noticed if he truly had scars, so she thought they weren't that bad. Nothing could have prepared her for the sight. She pulled at the roots of her hair, murmuring about how selfish she was until Adonis snapped. "Stop it, Cara! I said, Stop it!" He boomed, plucking her hand out of her hair. He dragged himself to the bed and took a seat on it, placing his head in his hand. "It's not your fault." He whispered tiredly, but she heard him. "It's not my grandfather's fault. It's supposed to be my father's fault, but I don't know anymore." He raised his head to look at her, and a tear rolled down his cheeks. This time Cara was sure she hadn't imagined it. "I don't know what to think anymore, Bel. Help me." And then the almighty mafia heir broke down in tears.Cara ran to Adonis as he broke down. She took him in her arms as his shoulders were trembling seriously, but a sound couldn't be heard from him—just occasional heaves and groans. He cried. She cried. They cried, and when her crying died down, he continued. It was like he had an entire bucket of tears in reserve and wanted to empty it.His continued tears triggered another round for her, and she cried again. It took a while for either of them to stop. Now, they were cuddled up against each other. Adonis had his head on her chest. For the first time in days, he looked less tensed.Cara wondered how long he'd been going around with so many unshed tears. They lay awake in silence, enjoying the sound of drizzling rain that had begun sometime during their outpour. She was giving him time. Time to collect his words and prepare himself to speak. It was, after all, new to him. Opening up to someone that is...When he finally spoke up, it wasn't what she expected."You're still without clothes
Cara sat up on her knees as her fingers traced the long scar in the middle of Adonis's back, the first one she had seen, and her heart squeezed in her chest once again. The rose tattoo was the biggest on his back and spanned across his entire spinal line. His back wasn't rough, but it wasn't completely smooth either. The scars looked to have been thoroughly treated.Maybe that's why it didn't occur to her. She thought. They were not so obvious. Her finger drifted to another one that wasn't as large as the scar beneath the tattoo but was also visible, and she asked."How did you get this one?" "During one of the beatings, he pushed me so hard I crashed into a glass table and it broke," Adonis replied, and a tear rolled down Cara's face again. He didn't even think about the one she was touching first. He just said it like he had it memorized."How did you even know the one I was asking about? Don't tell me you recognize each scar and when you got it." Adonis remained quiet. Cara bro
Cara wore a puzzled expression. "If your parents left together, how come only your father was found dead? And where is she now?" It didn't make sense to her. The circumstances around the death seemed sketchy.Adonis peeked down at her, stroking her wild brunette hair, which resulted from their recent vigorous activities. He found it hard to comprehend the situation. How did they get here? From having silly daily bickering to their love-hate relationship... feelings can be very scary.Feelings? Does he feel for her? She got him to do what no one has ever done. Open up. His grandfather tried. His therapist tried. They all tried to bring back the free-spirited, playful little boy he once was, but nothing worked. The closest to him being normal that they could achieve was when he met Luca—the talkative boy. It took a while to let him in, but Luca made him a better person. Before then, he was basically scared of everything. At the littlest sounds, he'd lock himself up in a closet. H
Adonis POV"That's the last of it! Come on guys! Move the truck. We're going home." I heard Luca say to the men as they loaded the final bags into the truck.Looking around me, my eye caught the unconscious figure of three men heaped on one another in front of a warehouse. I took a drag from my joint and puffed.Smoking wasn't something I regularly did but rather when I had a lot on my mind, and I had a lot on my mind.Scratch that, I've had a lot on my mind for a while now. A certain five-foot-five beauty had decided to make it her home. That should be normal. I thought about a lot of things regularly. But the fact that it was rent-free made me unsettled.I don't do anything or give anything for free.I took a drag again. So I decided to go after the shipment myself tonight. Maybe it'd surmise as a distraction. It was a known fact! No one who dares to cross me would be free, but they do it anyway. I shook my head at their stupidity. An entire shipment worth fifty million? Moreover, w
"Why didn't Nonno (grandfather) say a word?" Adonis barked. "I've spent most of my life resenting my father. I hated him, Cara. I feel like I've been cheated. I said some really messed up things about him. And he left that lunatic alive after everything he said? After he admitted to killing my father?" He rushed out in a breath."Maybe it's because he didn't want you to be more hurt." Cara cautiously reasoned. "You were already taking it hard; he didn't want to make it worse on you. If he had killed the man, then your mother would've been alone. I'm sure he did it for you!"Adonis gave her a blank stare. "What a load of crap!""Sorry?" Cara was taken aback."He should've killed him. Mother or not, she deserves to be alone. She ruined his son's life. And his grandson's." He paused. "No. He ruined his life. Being in love doesn't give you the right to behave like a fool.""Ohhh..." Cara drew out sarcastically. This was taking a dramatic turn."He should've been responsible for his actio
"You've been so busy... when are we going on our first date?" Cara whined to Adonis with a childish pout on her face. His hands ceased their rapid typing, and he peered at her from below his nose, adjusted his glasses, and then turned back to his work."Soon.""You keep saying soon. Give me a specific date." She pressed further."I can't. I have a lot of work." He gestured to his laptop on the table."You always have a lot of work. Can't we just pick any day?" "How about next month?" "You said that last month.""Then next week?""You said that last week." She cried out. "You know what? Do what you want. I just want to spend time with you, but if you don't want that, that's fine." Cara huffed before taking a seat on one of the empty chairs.Adonis stopped his incessant typing. He rose and went to her."Fine. We can have our date tonight." Cara squealed, throwing her arms around him happily. It's been a few weeks since they started dating for real. A few weeks since Adonis was intro
Cara's POV"So where are we going to?" I asked Adonis feeling all giddy. I couldn't believe it. A real date. Me and this hunk of junk.It feels so good to be able to call him mine without any restrictions. Although there was still a lingering voice in my head that I was cheating him by not being completely truthful but things have been going so well, that I don't want to ruin it. I plan to tell him the truth when the time is right. Telling him now would only make Antonio know that I've betrayed him and I wanted to avoid vast consequences. He still communicated through his spy. It had become so frequent. At least once a week. He'd ask for random things and I only gave them because I don't think they can be used against Adonis. What coup can he stage with a file of Adonis's last month's dealings? I was going to tell him before the month runs out. We both agreed not to let the past define us and judging from how sweet he had been recently, I knew they were more than just words. My h
Cara's POVMiss my timing, my foot! There was no way I was letting him leave without telling him.Adonis jumped to his feet immediately. "Get up, baby! We're going back." "But I have something to say. You've not heard me out!" I argued."Cara, there might be a coup at the mansion. We need to get back immediately. Leave the food. I'll get someone to pack it up later." He stalked back to the shrubs."Where are you going? Listen to me!" I watched him disappear before my eyes and followed after him. "Adonis," I called cautiously. "Where are you? If this is a joke, it is no longer funny." I heard nothing in reply.Did he abandon me here?"Adonis! Where are you? Adonis, come out here right now," I demanded, and the next thing I heard was an engine roaring to life.I screamed, stumbling back as I fell on my butt. They say be careful what you wish for.The noise increased as Adonis drove towards me on a badass motorbike."Climb." He yelled above the noise."You have a motorbike?" I sho
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
