"You've been so busy... when are we going on our first date?" Cara whined to Adonis with a childish pout on her face.
His hands ceased their rapid typing, and he peered at her from below his nose, adjusted his glasses, and then turned back to his work. "Soon." "You keep saying soon. Give me a specific date." She pressed further. "I can't. I have a lot of work." He gestured to his laptop on the table. "You always have a lot of work. Can't we just pick any day?" "How about next month?" "You said that last month." "Then next week?" "You said that last week." She cried out. "You know what? Do what you want. I just want to spend time with you, but if you don't want that, that's fine." Cara huffed before taking a seat on one of the empty chairs. Adonis stopped his incessant typing. He rose and went to her. "Fine. We can have our date tonight." Cara squealed, throwing her arms around him happily. It's been a few weeks since they started dating for real. A few weeks since Adonis was introduced to a side of her he hadn't seen before. From her frequent head-butting and stubborn habits, she'd switch into a demanding and spoilt brat. She was still the same, just a little childish. Those few weeks had been wonderful and strange to him, but he'd never felt so peaceful. He'd always lived to be Capo. All his goals and ambition stirred towards that one purpose, but now he was living for real. Not just for the family but for himself. As always, his stomach tightened in happiness when he saw her giggling her way up to the room. She made him smile more than anyone else. Whenever Cara was happy, he was happy. "Blah blah blah! I'm in love, and you're not. Blah blah blah." Luca mused from across the table, and Adonis rolled his eyes. He had forgotten that they weren't on their floor but in the dining room. "What do you want, Luca?" He asked tiredly, returning to his work. Luca sighed dramatically. "I'm just thinking I shouldn't have encouraged you guys to be together for real." He said, remembering how he came to the mansion a few weeks back to check if Cara was able to get through to Adonis. It was the exact day they decided to be together, and they both didn't come down for a long while. He got tired of waiting and barged in to be sure they weren't at each other's throats. Luca closed his eyes in discomfort, his mind screaming to be free from the agonizing memory. "I shouldn't have barged in that day!" He said with a bitter expression. "Yes, you shouldn't have." Adonis agreed with a stern look. "Hey! It wasn't my fault. I waited for hours, Adonis, hours! I got here after breakfast and barged in around dinner time. You can't blame me. How was I to know that you guys were going at it like bunnies?" Adonis gave him a dry look. "I don't care. You shouldn't have walked into a married couple's room." "I didn't walk into your room. I arrived at your floor, and then bam! You were going at it on your kitchen counter. Adonis, you had a bed, a chair, a desk." He exclaimed. "Keep your voice down!" Adonis hissed. "You made her so embarrassed, she refused to let me touch her for two weeks in fear of someone watching." "Is that why you've been so cold to me? You don't even hang out with me anymore." Luca whined, and Adonis gave him a look that said, 'Really? You too?" "You wanted me to commit. I'm committing. Go be with Cece." Luca scoffed, mimicking his words. "Anyways, I'm just glad you decided to get your sh*t together and put the past behind you. You have me to thank for that. I gave Cara the push she needed and acted as cupid for you both." Adonis hummed. He didn't need to admit it, but he owed his friend a big one. Not just for helping him get together with Cara but for being there when no one was. He had always been a tough support for Adonis. It had always been just the both of them. Now he had someone else. It was beginning to seem like a real family. "How's the work going?" He asked, switching into business mode. "The boys are on it. Nothing suspicious for now. Although Freddy and Mario reported that the Grecos have been buying weapons. The amounts are not alarming yet, just frequent, so we have our eyes on them." "Good." Adonis's mind went back to Cara. He had been waiting patiently for her to disclose that she knew the Grecos, but she had yet to. He couldn't even stop Kane from coming because it'd alert the Grecos about his suspicions. He wanted them to be caught unaware and think they were in charge. Adonis didn't care anyway. They were like little flies compared to the Bernardis. He could squash them whenever and however he wanted. And they say it's better to keep your friends close and enemies closer. Something big was coming. Something big and dangerous. But he was always prepared. He exhaled, a resolved look on his face. "Have you checked the weapon storage? We have enough, right? We need to be alert." "You don't need to say it. I understand." Luca assured. He grunted. "Cara says her training with Kane would end this month. It's been four months since they began. I suspect that's when they plan the attack. Tell the men to keep training. No one should be left behind." He noticed Luca pull on a thinking look and lean back against his chair. "What is it?" "You still don't trust her?" "She's hiding a valuable point from me. What do you think?" Luca glanced at the door. "You just have to trust her. It's better to talk about it than to be suspicious and cause a misunderstanding." Adonis grumbled with a disturbed expression. "I think the downside to this relationship thing is I have to talk a lot." He laughed. "Just talk to her. Maybe after your date tonight? I think I'll take Cece on one too. Spoil my woman and then some." He joked and looked down to check the text that had just popped up on his phone. His playful look turned into a sour one and Adonis rolled his eyes. "What is it this time?" "One of the men just caught the spy." Adonis's gaze turned cold. "Who is it?"Cara's POV"So where are we going to?" I asked Adonis feeling all giddy. I couldn't believe it. A real date. Me and this hunk of junk.It feels so good to be able to call him mine without any restrictions. Although there was still a lingering voice in my head that I was cheating him by not being completely truthful but things have been going so well, that I don't want to ruin it. I plan to tell him the truth when the time is right. Telling him now would only make Antonio know that I've betrayed him and I wanted to avoid vast consequences. He still communicated through his spy. It had become so frequent. At least once a week. He'd ask for random things and I only gave them because I don't think they can be used against Adonis. What coup can he stage with a file of Adonis's last month's dealings? I was going to tell him before the month runs out. We both agreed not to let the past define us and judging from how sweet he had been recently, I knew they were more than just words. My h
Cara's POVMiss my timing, my foot! There was no way I was letting him leave without telling him.Adonis jumped to his feet immediately. "Get up, baby! We're going back." "But I have something to say. You've not heard me out!" I argued."Cara, there might be a coup at the mansion. We need to get back immediately. Leave the food. I'll get someone to pack it up later." He stalked back to the shrubs."Where are you going? Listen to me!" I watched him disappear before my eyes and followed after him. "Adonis," I called cautiously. "Where are you? If this is a joke, it is no longer funny." I heard nothing in reply.Did he abandon me here?"Adonis! Where are you? Adonis, come out here right now," I demanded, and the next thing I heard was an engine roaring to life.I screamed, stumbling back as I fell on my butt. They say be careful what you wish for.The noise increased as Adonis drove towards me on a badass motorbike."Climb." He yelled above the noise."You have a motorbike?" I sho
Cara's POVI didn't wait to find out. In a split second, I was sprinting out of the living room and heading towards the door.I had never been a patient person anyway."Mrs. Bernardi." One of the men called, realising I was no longer with them, but I didn't stop. My heart was in my throat as I hoped it wasn't him. It shouldn't be. No. It can't be.Pulling the door open, I carefully slipped out, taking cover behind one of the grand pillars. My eyes scanned the scene in front of me.Where was he? I could barely make out anything but a sea of armed men with raised guns. I stretched my neck forward to get a better view, and then I saw him.He was safe, but not completely. Adonis and Antonio had their guns pointed at each other as they stood in a face-off. It was dark, and from where I stood, the lawn light did little to help me see clearly, but from their stance, I could tell they were not smiling at each other. Each of their men also had their guns raised at each other, waiting for the
"Ah... you knew I survived?" Sebastien sighed dramatically. "You never cease to amaze me, Dimitri." Dimitri quietly studied his childhood friend.Except for the wonders of age, he hadn't changed a bit. A part of his mind had always bugged him that Sabestien might be alive somewhere. After all, he was the one who pulled the trigger and gave him a narrow escape. He had barely missed his heart."Do you know how long it took me to get back on my feet?" He continued with a snarl. "Do you know what I had to go through? I imagined the look on your face when I triumphantly take your crown. That—" He stomped his crutch on the ground, "—is the only reason I'm standing here today."Dimitri nodded in the head in resignation."It's understandable. But do you want to cause a reenactment of the past that should be forgotten? Where did it take us? We were once friends. Amico (friends) Sabestien." He urged, but Sebastian didn't have it.He had come with a lot of hatred and vengeance in his heart and
Luca watched in horror as Dimitri slumped against his wheelchair, blood spluttering out of his mouth."What are y'all looking at? Get him to the hospital!" He yelled to the men on his right side and turned to the ones on his left. "You guys should form a cover." Throwing a glance at his friend, who was busy slaughtering everything and everyone his eyes came in contact with, he knew it would do no good to try and convince him. When Adonis got like that, no one could stop him. He wasn't in his right mind, but this time, Luca was in support of his actions. An eye for an eye. When he was sure that Adonis could hold out on his own, he went after Dimitri. Knowing even if he couldn't, the men would step inDimitri was the priority. Cara was still behind the pillar, only this time, she wasn't peeking or trying to. If anything, the way her legs were pulled tightly to her chest and her shoulders trembled with her eyes tightly closed, it was obvious that she didn't want to be there. Her body
Cara's POV The last twenty-four hours have been hard... there was a chill in the atmosphere at the Bernardi mansion. At least to me.There had been an unusual quietness as opposed to the chattering since the death of Dimitri. It was like everyone had a mutual agreement to do it in his honour. Another intense stabbing pain erupted in my chest and my face scrunched up in discomfort. The previous battle had no direct effect on me, yet I had a lot of reasons for the throbbing ache; I didn't know which it was.Perhaps because of Dimitri's death, I'd come to care for the elderly man. He was, after all, the one person, the man I had feelings for, cared about. Or because I'd come to accept the family as mine, and when a family hurts, they all hurt together.Okay, it might be because I watched the entire scene play out that night. Adonis response to his grandfather being shot. The massive killings and decapitation. The pained look on Luca's face when Dimitri was being rushed to the hospita
"Where is he?" Cara asked Luca. She wanted to get to him as soon as possible; the longer she waited, the more liable she was to change her mind. Without waiting for a reply, she was already out of the room and heading towards the elevator. If Adonis wasn't on their floor, then he was definitely on the second floor, she concluded, but Luca's reply caused her to halt for a second."The fourth floor." Cara looked back with a questioning expression. "The fourth floor?" He nodded. The same fourth-floor Adonis had firmly warned her not to ever go into. She was torn. He was already pissed at her; this was not the right time to test his patience. She frowned. "Are you sure?" And Luca exhaled deeply with a disgruntled expression. He knew Adonis never liked anyone going up there. It was the only floor in the mansion. Even the maids weren't allowed to clean that particular floor."I'm not sure about anything right now," he confessed."But you still think I should go...""Yes."Cara nodde
Cara felt her heart being torn apart as the elevator slid closed. She fell to her knees, her throat closing up.So this was it? Adonis was really telling her to-Bang!A loud thud echoed, and she jumped to her feet as the elevator automatically slid open again."Adonis?"There he was, covered in cold sweats in a barely conscious state. The only reason he was still standing was due to the walls holding his weight. Her brows shot up and she ran towards him."Adonis, what's wrong?" Cara asked, but he could only let out a painful groan in reply, tightly shutting his eyes to ease his pain.Cara was in two minds. He was fine just a moment ago. Why was he suddenly acting like this? Her eyes followed the movement of his hand as it moved to rub at his forehead. "Are you having a headache? Should I call the doctor? Do you want to go to the hospital? Tell me what I should do." She fretted, extending her arms towards him, but he moved out of her hold and with great difficulty, Adonis gritted o
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
