Luca watched in horror as Dimitri slumped against his wheelchair, blood spluttering out of his mouth.
"What are y'all looking at? Get him to the hospital!" He yelled to the men on his right side and turned to the ones on his left. "You guys should form a cover." Throwing a glance at his friend, who was busy slaughtering everything and everyone his eyes came in contact with, he knew it would do no good to try and convince him. When Adonis got like that, no one could stop him. He wasn't in his right mind, but this time, Luca was in support of his actions. An eye for an eye. When he was sure that Adonis could hold out on his own, he went after Dimitri. Knowing even if he couldn't, the men would step in Dimitri was the priority. Cara was still behind the pillar, only this time, she wasn't peeking or trying to. If anything, the way her legs were pulled tightly to her chest and her shoulders trembled with her eyes tightly closed, it was obvious that she didn't want to be there. Her body kept jerking each time a gun was being fired. She had seen Dimitri slump unconsciously. The battle that seemed to be just a confrontation had become real. Would they be able to save Dimitri? He was the only family Adonis had left. Adonis was just beginning to live outside the shell his trauma had built around him. How could this happen? And to think she was involved in making it happen... there was no way Adonis was going to let her go free. The fight was gruesome. Adonis was a beast, a menacing and dangerous beast that revelled in the blood of his enemies. All he could see was red as he tore them apart. They were fighting back; he wasn't getting away unscathed, but even with the injuries he sustained, he didn't stop. He was being fueled by rage and had lost all sense of reasoning. Having just one goal in mind as he advanced, Vengeance. His eyes searched for Antonio amidst the chaos, but he couldn't find him. He had disappeared the moment Dimitri was shot. So had his father and Carlo. His men were unskilled and fought with only brute strength, so they were unmatched against Adonis's well-trained men. All around they dropped like flies. But to someone like Antonio, their lives meant nothing, yet he took the life of someone who meant everything to Adonis. There was no way he'd get away. Then Adonis's eyes found Carlo and Sebastian, who had just reached one of their vans and were preparing to leave. "I need cover!" He growled, and two men swiftly ran to his side. "Take care of any bastard that comes my way. I have a debt to pay." He instructed as he pushed forward. In less than a minute he had gotten to the van and was pulling it open. "Fratello, attento (brother, watch out)!" A voice vaguely yelled, but Adonis already had his gun raised, and the moment the door was pulled open, a bullet went flying and lodged itself into Carlo's skull, killing him instantly. "Adonis!!!" The voice screamed, and Adonis turned back to gaze at the familiar face. Their eyes connected, and Antonio raised his gun towards him, but he was too far to get a correct angle. He'd finally decided to come out of hiding. Still staring at him, Adonis's lips curled up in a sadistic smile. From the corner of his eye, he could see Sabestien scrambling around, to pick Carlo's discarded gun. But before he even had the chance to aim, Adonis fired again and this time, he didn't stop. His head. His chest. His arm. His shoulder. Shot after shot, he released until he emptied the gun of all bullets. Finally satisfied, he picked up the discarded gun from his side and headed towards Antonio, who was vibrating with a murderous look in his eyes as he beelined for Adonis. He could still feel the adrenaline pumping through his veins. He had envisioned this day for so long. The day when he'd finally get to settle scores with Antonio, but something whoosh passed him, and he fell to the ground, clutching his arm as blood began to seep through his clothes. Someone had shot at him. Adonis faltered in his steps and looked in the direction of the gunshot to see that Luca had returned with medical help. It was then it occurred to him that the fight had ended the moment he killed Carlo and Sabestien. They had truly won. What was left of Antonio's men had fled, and it was just his men left. A lot of them were gravely injured, but they would be fine with some help. Pride filled his heart. All that remained was to crown his victory by finishing off Antonio, but as he took a step towards him, Luca held his arm in a firm grip. "There's no time for this." He swallowed and, with great difficulty, said his next words. "Your grandfather...." Adonis didn't need to hear the rest; he was barreling down towards the mansion. By the time he got to Dimitri, he was out of breath and the state he was in only made breathing harder. He eyed his grandfather, whose entire abdomen and chest were wrapped in a bandage as he barely hung on. The doctor walked over to him. "The bullet has been taken out, but there's nothing more we can do. He asked to be brought home." He gave him a pat on the shoulder and then left the room to give them some privacy. "Come here, nipote (son)," Dimitri called in a frail, tired voice, but Adonis refused, watching his dying grandfather with a hard, grim look. "Figlio...(son)" Dimitri called again but in a weaker voice. He could feel the life slipping out of him. "No," Adonis replied. "You shouldn't have come. You weren't supposed to be here. This wouldn't have happened." He gave his grandson a small smile. "This is why I waited, Adonis. I started this war, so I should end it myself." "At the cost of your life?" Adonis yelled, and a tear rolled down his face. "You said it; this is for the family. If one life is lost..." "Better me than anyone else." He wheezed. "About Cara... I know Adonis. You don't think I'm oblivious?" Adonis scoffed. Of course, his grandfather found out. "She's your family now. Give her a chance. Remember the conversation we had a few days ago?" Dimitri asked, referring to the day Adonis had visited to confirm the truth about his father's death. "I and your father may not be with you, but she has enough love to give you. I am proud of you, Adonis. Very proud." He breathed heavily as his voice began to fade away. Adonis felt his throat closing up, his vision blurring as he watched his grandfather say his last words. For the first time, he felt what it meant to be powerless. "Ti amerò sempre, figliolo (I will always love you, son)." And then his heartbeat ceased. Adonis could only watch; he didn't take a step back, or go in. When the tears ceased, his bloodshot eyes remained on the unmoving body of Dimitri. He didn't say a word when Dr. Bruno came in to pack him up. Nor did he say a word when Luca came in to check on him. A whole day passed, but Adonis remained sitting emotionlessly with his back against the door of his grandfather's room until Cara came— His expressionless face broke, and he parted his dry, chapped lips, eyeing her with a snarl. "What are you doing here?"Cara's POV The last twenty-four hours have been hard... there was a chill in the atmosphere at the Bernardi mansion. At least to me.There had been an unusual quietness as opposed to the chattering since the death of Dimitri. It was like everyone had a mutual agreement to do it in his honour. Another intense stabbing pain erupted in my chest and my face scrunched up in discomfort. The previous battle had no direct effect on me, yet I had a lot of reasons for the throbbing ache; I didn't know which it was.Perhaps because of Dimitri's death, I'd come to care for the elderly man. He was, after all, the one person, the man I had feelings for, cared about. Or because I'd come to accept the family as mine, and when a family hurts, they all hurt together.Okay, it might be because I watched the entire scene play out that night. Adonis response to his grandfather being shot. The massive killings and decapitation. The pained look on Luca's face when Dimitri was being rushed to the hospita
"Where is he?" Cara asked Luca. She wanted to get to him as soon as possible; the longer she waited, the more liable she was to change her mind. Without waiting for a reply, she was already out of the room and heading towards the elevator. If Adonis wasn't on their floor, then he was definitely on the second floor, she concluded, but Luca's reply caused her to halt for a second."The fourth floor." Cara looked back with a questioning expression. "The fourth floor?" He nodded. The same fourth-floor Adonis had firmly warned her not to ever go into. She was torn. He was already pissed at her; this was not the right time to test his patience. She frowned. "Are you sure?" And Luca exhaled deeply with a disgruntled expression. He knew Adonis never liked anyone going up there. It was the only floor in the mansion. Even the maids weren't allowed to clean that particular floor."I'm not sure about anything right now," he confessed."But you still think I should go...""Yes."Cara nodde
Cara felt her heart being torn apart as the elevator slid closed. She fell to her knees, her throat closing up.So this was it? Adonis was really telling her to-Bang!A loud thud echoed, and she jumped to her feet as the elevator automatically slid open again."Adonis?"There he was, covered in cold sweats in a barely conscious state. The only reason he was still standing was due to the walls holding his weight. Her brows shot up and she ran towards him."Adonis, what's wrong?" Cara asked, but he could only let out a painful groan in reply, tightly shutting his eyes to ease his pain.Cara was in two minds. He was fine just a moment ago. Why was he suddenly acting like this? Her eyes followed the movement of his hand as it moved to rub at his forehead. "Are you having a headache? Should I call the doctor? Do you want to go to the hospital? Tell me what I should do." She fretted, extending her arms towards him, but he moved out of her hold and with great difficulty, Adonis gritted o
"I did nothing of the sort. I only told her to leave, and the next thing I knew, she was lying unconscious on the floor." Adonis defended, leaning back against the sofa.He was in a bad mood. Not only was his sleep interrupted because of Cara's situation, but they even dared to send him away from the bed. Luca placed his hands on his hips, giving him a reprimanding look."Oh really? How come she has been unconscious for the last five hours then? Why isn't she waking up? Why would you even tell her to leave? And why does she have all her stuff packed?" He exclaimed, gesturing to the suitcases and travelling bags that had been pushed aside when they came barreling in."I have no idea," Adonis replied coolly."You." Luca gave him a look that said 'I'm not stupid', "Have no idea? I sent her up to get you out of your comatose state, not to end up in one!" He retorted, unable to understand how Cara ended up unconscious.Nothing seemed to be making sense at the moment. When his phone beepe
Cara's last two words snapped Adonis out of his dazed state, and he stomped over to her with annoyance polluting his facial musculature."Little Adonis? Are you serious right now? Did you know about this before? You did this on purpose, didn't you?" "Excuse me? I just found out, and why would I want to get pregnant intentionally?" Cara snapped back at him, meeting his glare head-on."Then why?" She scoffed. "If you've forgotten, this is what happens when two genders of the opposite sex have unprotected sex, and we've been having a lot of that!" Her voice rose at the end.Was he going to blame her for this too? For getting pregnant?"Okay, okay, let's not forget that you have company." Luca raised his arm to call them to order but was promptly ignored.Adonis began to pace around the room, his hand restlessly running through his hair."How can you get pregnant? It's too early for a child; the circumstances right now are not even palatable. I thought you were being careful or preventi
Things had ultimately returned to normal at the Bernard's mansion. The men were back on their feet, and the regular chattering had resumed.Adonis looked better and was trying his best to restore order, and Cara was beginning to love her new pregnancy glow.—except for the constant vomiting, that is.The next day, after they'd settled on a compromise, Adonis had instructed that she be driven to the hospital for a thorough check, and the pregnancy was estimated to be a little over a month. He was back to being the cold man he was before they confessed their feelings to one another, just a little more attentive. They rarely shared conversations other than simple greetings and small talk over meals and he was very occupied with finding Antonio. He had invested a lot of time, effort, and resources in his search, but Antonio was doing a very good job of staying hidden. His hideouts and home had been thoroughly searched, but there was still no sign of him anywhere. Cara could see it made
Caras's POV"She's staying over?" I exclaimed as Adonis broke the news to me. "Why?"He sighed, taking off his shirt."She says she's here for emotional support. I don't need one, but there are a lot of rooms in the mansion, and I'm sure it was her father's idea. I don't want to seem ungrateful." "I don't like her," I confessed, and Adonis raised an eyebrow at me."You don't even know her.""I don't have to know her to not like her. Call it female intuition." He rose. "Well, good for you. I'm going to bed." And with that walked back into the room, leaving me to think it over with a dissatisfied pout.Have you ever met someone and just developed an instant dislike for the person? That's how I feel right now. There's something about that Natasha lady that doesn't just sit right with me.She could've introduced herself as the daughter of Bernardi's closest ally only. Why add Adonis's ex-fiancée? And that forlorn look on Adonis's face when he saw her. What was that? I was no seer or
Cara's POV"I don't like her, I don't! It's been more than a week. Why is she still here? Is Antonio that hard to find?" I complained to my companions as we lay binge-watching in the movie room. It's been over a week, and Natasha was still around. Her behaviour was beginning to get on my nerves. Not that she had done anything directly, but I just didn't like her closeness with Adonis."But you said she was being mindful of you." Cecelia chimed in from beside her man. They had been unusually cuddly today, and I made a mental note to ask her if everything was fine."Yes, she has been, but ah..." I groaned. "I don't know how to say it.""Then explain it." Tina piped in from the video call. She couldn't join us at the mansion due to a late work shift, so we had to settle for a call.I sat up. "Okay. Two days ago, after I got back from my check-up, she was sleeping on our living room sofa, and when I woke her up to ask why, she said she came to see Adonis but slept off. I mean, why wait?
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
