Cara's POV
"I don't like her, I don't! It's been more than a week. Why is she still here? Is Antonio that hard to find?" I complained to my companions as we lay binge-watching in the movie room. It's been over a week, and Natasha was still around. Her behaviour was beginning to get on my nerves. Not that she had done anything directly, but I just didn't like her closeness with Adonis. "But you said she was being mindful of you." Cecelia chimed in from beside her man. They had been unusually cuddly today, and I made a mental note to ask her if everything was fine. "Yes, she has been, but ah..." I groaned. "I don't know how to say it." "Then explain it." Tina piped in from the video call. She couldn't join us at the mansion due to a late work shift, so we had to settle for a call. I sat up. "Okay. Two days ago, after I got back from my check-up, she was sleeping on our living room sofa, and when I woke her up to ask why, she said she came to see Adonis but slept off. I mean, why wait? "Oh." Cecelia mused. "Exactly!" I continued at her encouragement. "Three days ago, I was going to sit beside Adonis for lunch but had to go pee, and by the time I was back, she'd swapped seats with the excuse that they had something to discuss." "I was there. They truthfully had something to discuss." Luca added, and I waved him off. "So they also had something to discuss when she barged into our floor in a very tight body romper that could barely stop her big chest from spilling out, claiming our gym was more equipped than the one on the second floor? And she has a very large chest, I tell you. A very large one!" The room erupted in soft laughter at my choice of words, but it wasn't funny to me. The thought of her being seen by Adonis instead of me had me pissed. "How come Adonis doesn't speak up?" Tina asked, this time after the laughter had died down, and I scoffed. "I think he needs therapy." They laughed again. "Honestly, he's been so obsessed with finding Antonio that he can't seem to see through her. I thought she was an heir or something. Doesn't she have an empire to run?" I particularly asked Luca. "I don't think you should bother yourself. They might have a history, but Adonis would never cheat on you." His eyes fluttered to my tiny bump. "Especially when you're carrying his child. Natasha's just good at what she does." He assured me, and Cecelia made a mocking sound. "What?" "Nothing..." She drew out in a sing-song voice. I heaved a sigh. "Look, guys, I have no problem with the things she does. She might actually like wearing exposing clothes and might've really wanted to see Adonis or even had something to discuss truly, but I feel like she's hiding behind a mask. Why does she have to be so shady about those things? It's unfair that all I do every day is pee, eat, sleep— "Let's not forget, throw up," Tina added again. "Thank you! While she gets to spend the day with Adonis. The last time I spoke to him about it, he said they were close to finding Antonio. How close Luca?" He pulled Cecelia closer before speaking. "We found the place he'd been hiding at since he ran off. It's the closest we've ever come, and it's all thanks to Cecelia. I think Adonis just needs a channel for his anger and sadness. This is the only way he knows how to mourn. You know him better than we do." "I understand, Luca. Trust me, I do, but am I the only one who thinks it's weird? With all the resources available to the Bernardis, they couldn't find Antonio after searching for over two weeks, but she came, and in just a week, you're close? Think about it." I urged, and he gave me an apprehensive look. "Her father's our ally; she's not capable of doing what you're thinking, Cara. Natasha knows what's at stake." "Still, I agree with Cara; it wouldn't hurt to be careful." Cecelia supported me, and I sent her a thankful look. I'm sure they all thought I was paranoid or being too analytical, and I could blame it on the pregnancy hormones if I wanted to, but it was more than that. Something about that woman was fishy. Ally or not. Suddenly, I remembered. "Cece. The day after the accident I and Adonis had on the estate grounds, you came into the room to check on me, but someone else was there. Who was it?" Her face scrunched up as she tried to recollect what I was asking about. "I don't think anyone was... wait. Natasha was in the room. She'd come with some of their men to lend a helping hand at the mansion when we noticed there was a break-in. How do you know I was there? I thought you were unconscious." My eyes widened at the news. "I was unconscious, but I..." My words trailed off. Ta. The syllable I heard. I spent weeks trying to find out if anyone had a name starting with that syllable, but what if it wasn't the prefix? It could also be the suffix, but I doubted it. The information made sense if I connected it with Natasha. Was she the spy? Who was the maid that Adonis killed then? I turned to Luca. "Have you guys noticed anything missing since then? Nothing at all?" He shook his head negatory. "Tina, I have to go," I announced abruptly and ended the call. "Hey, where are you going? Stop running, Cara!" Cecelia called out, but I was already running down to the elevator. I had to see Adonis. I had a question to ask. The moment the elevator opened, I moved towards the study and, without knocking, pulled open the door. "Adonis I—Natasha?" She was standing by his side, leaning over Adonis as they went through a document on his desk, her chest was pressed up against his arm. He didn't act like I'd caught him doing anything bad, but she placed a hand to her mouth in shock. "Oh my God. I'm so sorry, Cara. It's not what it looks like." I drew in a calming breath, willing myself to not throw away the only lead I had on her being Antonio's spy. "It looks exactly like it seems. You guys are going through a document. What else?" She feigned relief. "Oh. Thank God you didn't misunderstand. My father sent a new lead on Antonio. He's been very helpful in the search; that's why I love him so much." I gave her a tight-lipped smile. "Hmmm. You're lucky." My eyes went to Adonis's, who had gone back to going through his documents. I know I handled it well but he wasn't going to say a word in his defense? "I heard you don't have parents." Natasha went on, "It must be so devastating to have never experienced a fatherly love." Adonis looked up at that, and I raised an eyebrow in reply. "Thank you for your unnecessary pity. You do a lot of unnecessary things. I have experienced fatherly and even motherly love. My parents died early, but they were still very nice to me." "Really?" She took a step towards me. "But what I heard was quite different." "And that is?" "You were placed in the care of a gambler at a little age. I heard he died early in the year, or am I wrong?" "Natasha, don't," Adonis finally spoke up, and I regarded him with a look of disbelief. A ringing sound filled my ears. What was she talking about? What did Adonis mean by 'don't'? Their voices faded in the background as the wheels turned in my head. "You shouldn't have said that." "She wasn't aware? Oh, my God, I'm so sorry." Someone pulled me by the arm. "I'm so sorry, Cara. Can you hear me?" The ball dropped. I looked down to see Natasha holding my hand with a look of concern that didn't reach her eyes. She'd finally dropped the pretence. "What did you just say?" "I'm so sorry— I shook my head. "No. After that." "Can you hear me?" The sentence triggered a memory. Cara, can you hear me? Are you awake? It was her. She's definitely the one. Natasha was the spy. I yanked my hand out of hers, throwing a glare at Adonis. "What is she talking about?"Cara's POV Adonis watched me with nonchalant eyes like it was nothing serious. I scoffed. Was this how he was going to be?Natasha moved to hold my hand again. "Cara, I'm sorry—I held up my hand in silence."Not you. I'm talking to Adonis. This is between myself and my husband." 'I'll be coming back to you later.' I wanted to add but decided against it. Adonis's reply to my question would determine that. The door to his study was pushed open, and Luca came in with a worried-looking Cecelia. They must have caught on from my tone when I left the movie room that something was wrong, but the tension that they felt in the atmosphere confirmed it. "What's going on?" Luca asked, glancing between Adonis, Natasha, and me. "Adonis was just going to explain to me why Natasha knows about my family history even better than I do." Luca frowned and then turned to Adonis."Did you tell her?" I eyed him. "So you knew too. Good, who wants to do the honours of explaining it to me? ""Your father
Cara's POV"You've been expecting my call, mio amore (my love)?" Antonio's curious voice filtered through the phone. My lips thinned as a grim look adorned my face. The bastard still thinks he's funny. "Adonis has been searching for you since you went off the grid. You have no choice but to reach out to me. What better ally than his disloyal wife?" I attacked, not in the mood to humour anyone. He let out a reverberant laugh that broke into a fit of cough, letting me know he was in convalescence."He did a number on me." Then his voice became deadly serious. "A number I'd repay." I rolled my eyes at his reply. What is it with these men always having something to repay? The clothes in my hand fell onto one of the bags I had out as an idea popped into my head. My plan never really flopped. I just wasn't interested any longer.Kane was dead. Carlo was dead. That was it from the very start, and they were making it easy for me. Although I never planned for others like Dimitri and Sabest
The man with roguish blonde hair stood with his back pressed against the wall. Amidst the chaos of gunshots and gruesome fights, he was the only one with a huge grin on his face. Things were going according to plan. There was no way Dimitri would make it out alive. He was sure of that! Adonis couldn't do without him and was also sure to fall. The entire family would be ruined by the death of just one man.He chuckled again, and his long scar squeezed in an unseemly way. Finally, it was all falling into place. All that remained was to get out of there as soon as his brother and father made it out safely.Their long-term goal would be achieved after all.He cautiously peeked out from hiding to confirm they'd left but his heart jumped in fear at the sight.Fear for his brother and father.Adonis was furiously heading their way, clearing everything on his part. His eyes widened and he yelled."Carlo" But it was no use; he couldn't hear him, and Adonis was almost at his side. If Carlo w
"Why aren't you leaving?" Adonis asked Luca as the rest of the room dispersed, still in their dazed state. No one had ever seen Cara in that light, not to talk more about the outburst she had. The words she said came as a shock to some, then as a low blow to others, particularly Adonis himself. He could only stare blankly as though they were nothing more than ordinary words, but the withdrawn expression on his face as soon as she stormed out the door spoke volumes of how he felt.He shouldn't be hurt. It was nothing. He didn't care about what others thought of him, and that's how he had always lived, but his heart didn't agree with that theory anymore. "You messed up, man," Luca stated in an emotionless voice.Adonis ignored him, heading back to the work he had at hand before the show. He heaved a deep sigh, taking a seat at his desk."She wanted the truth.""And you could've placed it down in a different manner. You were being so carefree about it. Like her life meant nothing to you
Cara's POV Ever heard the saying, 'What you see is not always what you get?' The composer couldn't have been more right. That's how I feel right now. I thought I'd seen all that there was to Adonis. I was wrong. These days I think I've become a poet.No. Poet isn't the right word; maybe an artist, because the interpretations of most phrases and sayings, which I thought were just filled with fancy words, kept coming to me. Locating the hidden back door was easy. Stealing a knife from the kitchen was easier; to the workers, I was still the lady of the house, so no one questioned my decisions or movements. What was hard was the journey to the door itself.I'd been living in the mansion for more than six months and had spent approximately five months as Mrs Bernardi, during which I believed I'd seen and known all that there was to him and his lifestyle, but once again, I couldn't have been more wrong.Walking through the underground tunnel was creepy enough that it made my skin crawl,
Cara's POV Antonio narrowed his eyes at me, then at Adonis's arm that was wrapped around my waist possessively. His eyes met mine again, and his lips curled up in a realizing smile."You decided to switch sides, mi amore (my love)?""I was never on your side." I hissed.Okay, maybe at the beginning I was, but that was beside the point.Luca stood opposite me with a hard look on his face, Antonio was still sitting with a smirk. I don't know if it felt right in this situation, yet I was digging the attention Natasha kept throwing my way through unbelievable glances. I could practically see the confused words written on her face, and it felt satisfying. It had taken a lot of self-control to prevent myself from snapping her neck, and I must say, the look on her face was worth it.Antonio sat up."Even after you found out he had been lying to you? That he killed your father on purpose and hid the truth about your birth from you?" He gave a small laugh. "If I knew a good f*ck could make y
Flashback: The night Cara found out she was pregnant...By the time he was done, Cara had her mouth wide open, staring at him with pure dread as she reconsidered if waiting for the raging man in front of her was the right choice.Adonis exhaled heavily, then he looked down at her, and all traces of anger dispersed. His gaze showed everything and more. He had decided to heal and bare himself before her. He was letting her know that this was it for him. Love might be a difficult emotion for him, but he was willing to try; he wasn't going to run away anymore. They didn't need access to an end to have a new beginning, but it was what they both wanted.A month to heal.A month to grow.A month to start afresh. He was letting her know that she wouldn't wait too long. Maybe it was worth it after all. Their relationship was one of a kind. They were doing everything backwards, but she didn't care. As long as it helped them grow. She wasn't going to let him down again. It was time to put the
Flashback: The day of the funeral..."I don't like her," Cara confessed, and Adonis raised an eyebrow at her."You don't even know her." She pursed her lips."I don't have to know her to not like her. Call it female intuition." "Well, good for you. I'm going to bed." He replied before walking back into the room, and she stared after him with a dissatisfied pout.Adonis found it weird, too, but he wasn't going to tell her that. What was Natasha doing here? He hadn't seen her in a while since when Luca said she'd come over with extra men to help out during the break-in. Honestly, things hadn't been the same between them since their engagement was called off four years ago, so he wondered why she always visited the mansion with one excuse or the other. Her father didn't say a word about her coming over when he saw him at the funeral so why did she come over?Adonis closed his eyes, relaxing into the bed, as the stress of the day finally caught up with him.Whatever she was here for,
Cara's POV "Tell me why I decided to do this again," Cecelia asked as we ducked behind a blue sedan. We had been watching Luca for the past thirty minutes, yet he hadn't done anything apart from sipping overly priced coffee.I glanced behind me."Because we are curious, and we need to be sure." "It doesn't look like he's expecting anyone. Could I have been wrong?" She asked again and I could hear guilt in her voice.Even I was beginning to think this was fruitless. Tailing him wasn't easy, especially since it's something he was a pro at. We had to be extra careful to avoid being caught. Now it seemed like we had been suspicious of him for no reason."You said you were sure?"Cecelia nodded, then added, "Although I'm not so sure anymore." I sighed heavily, already feeling drained."Why don't we wait a few minutes more, and if there's nothing to see, we can leave? There's no harm in that, right?" Personally, I found it hard to believe our suspicions, but this was the first time I w
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
