The man with roguish blonde hair stood with his back pressed against the wall. Amidst the chaos of gunshots and gruesome fights, he was the only one with a huge grin on his face.
Things were going according to plan. There was no way Dimitri would make it out alive. He was sure of that! Adonis couldn't do without him and was also sure to fall. The entire family would be ruined by the death of just one man. He chuckled again, and his long scar squeezed in an unseemly way. Finally, it was all falling into place. All that remained was to get out of there as soon as his brother and father made it out safely. Their long-term goal would be achieved after all. He cautiously peeked out from hiding to confirm they'd left but his heart jumped in fear at the sight. Fear for his brother and father. Adonis was furiously heading their way, clearing everything on his part. His eyes widened and he yelled. "Carlo" But it was no use; he couldn't hear him, and Adonis was almost at his side. If Carlo wasn't safe then the same was for Sabestien. He needed to do something. He needed to help them. Coming out of hiding, he began pushing through the men in battle, using them as a shield of protection. "Fratello, attento (brother, watch out)!" He yelled out again with all his strength, but his brother still couldn't hear. Instead, it caught the attention of the perpetrator, who gave him a sinister smile in reply. Adonis had made it there before him. He was still far away. He felt helpless and raised his gun to fire at him but ended up wasting the life of an unknowing man. His family's life was at stake. Carlo should've been out of there with Sabestien. What took him so long? He had to help somehow. He had to— Bang! Amongst many other shots being fired, that particular one resounded the most, and his brother slumped back with his eyes open. Antonio felt hot, searing pain burn through his body. He roared in anger, "Adonis!!!!" but the psychopath just gave a smile in reply as he killed off his father. Antonio felt his body begin to tremble, it was like he was being stabbed with a knife in the same spot over and over again, and then he was barreling for him. But Adonis didn't stop and kept on emptying his bullet into the dead body of the elderly man. Antonio pushed forward towards him. Adonis was going to regret this. Adonis was going to— Bang! He felt a small sting in his arm, and then a searing pain followed as he fell to the ground, clutching his arm in at the excruciating pain. Where had the shot come from? He glanced around; the war was over, but Adonis was still advancing towards him. It was then it dawned on him. There was no way he could win the fight. Especially in his condition. His glaring gaze met Adonis's as Luca rushed up to him. This was his chance to escape. His men were down. It was over for the day, but he could live to fight another day. When he'd be strong enough to avenge his family. Next thing he knew, Adonis was running to the mansion and seeing that Luca was distracted with ordering the men around, he took off into the thick trees, clutching at his injured arm. It was pitch black, and he could hardly see a thing. Hed barely made it past ten metres when his vision blurred and he stumbled over a log of wood. He was losing a lot of blood. Antonio let out a weak groan at the unpleasant ache, and he stumbled again. It was becoming harder to move. The physical pain wasn't the only thing weighing him down. His heart mourned for his brother...for his father. All they wanted was to make the family great. To give the family its deserved position. He kept on moving even though he could hardly see anything but dark bulky leaves. A stray branch tore at the skin of his face, opening up the surface of his already healed scar on his face as a wave of dizziness consumed him and he fell to the ground once more, writhing at the switch between hot and cold flashes of his body. He tried getting up, but he couldn't. His body had lost the will to fight. Just then, his ears pricked at the sound of leaves crunching beneath a feet. He should be the only one here. Had he been caught already? With great difficulty, he pulled open his blurry eyes to be met with the outline of a woman staring down at him. She looked familiar, but before he could discern who she was, his eyes rolled to the back of his head as darkness took over. By the time he came to, Antonio was lying on the floor in an abandoned building, with the hairs on his skin raised as a cold chill passed through the windows covered with thin straps of polythene bags acting as his only shield from the cold morning air. Golden hue reflected into the room. The sun was just rising. A soft moan slipped out of his mouth at the tenderness he felt in his arm, and he sat up to check his body over. The spot where he had been shot was wrapped up in a bandage, and his other hand moved to feel the ones on the little tears on his face. Alert, he jumped to his feet, ignoring the protest of his weak body. Where was he? How did he get here? Who brought him here? He was sure he passed out on Adonis's estate, but this place wasn't familiar. His questions didn't remain unanswered for long as footsteps echoed, and the familiar figure he saw before he lost consciousness received a face. "Natasha." It wasn't a statement of surprise but expectation. He was expecting her. She was his getaway ticket and was late even. Natasha eyed him with distaste. "You're finally awake." She spat. "I thought I'd have to dunk you into a well or something." Antonio's lips stretched into a lazy grin. "Impatient are we?" "Of course I am!" Her lips smacked together in annoyance. "This was not the plan Antonio. You would've been dead if I hadn't come to your rescue, almost blowing my cover by the way." The small light in his eyes disappeared as he was reminded of his failure once again. "You said you had it all under control. I only accepted to work with you since you promised to kill that bitch by his side. You can do or have whatever you want, but give me Adonis! How many times do I have to say it?" She gave him a once over. " And what the hell did you do to get fried like this?" "Enough, Natasha!" He walked over to the broken window, a faraway look in his eyes. "Do not quiet me. You should make up for your incapability. What are you going to do? Dimitri's dead." Antonio pondered on her words as he watched the sunrise in the early morning. The cool air caressed the patches of his skin that were visible, leaving a trail of goosebumps. The news of Dimitri's death didn't give him joy like it should. Adonis took more from him but now, he had nothing to lose. He was going to take everything from him. What next? He scoffed. It was simple. He'd finish what he had started. And with that conclusion, he spoke up. "It's time to finish it all." Natasha threw a sceptical look at him. "In your feeble state? You can't even raise your injured arm; how do you expect to shoot a gun?" "You don't need to worry. I just need to be strong enough to fire one bullet." His voice dripped with malicious intent. "I have everything I need, but I'll need access to my home." The side of his lips tilted up. "If I know Adonis well, he'll be searching for me soon, so I need your help." She tutted. "Fine, but this would be the last time. If you mess up again, I can't help. I refuse to go down with you." Normally, it'd have caused his lips to curl up but there was nothing funny about it to him at the moment. Even he was tired of the recurring streak. "This would be the last time." He said plainly, then he spun around to meet her dead in the eyes. "I think it's time you visit your ex-fiancé again." **** "You don't need to know where I've been." Antonio gave a reply after a long pause earning a dissatisfied huff from Cara. "Fine." He'd been so open about other things, she'd let this one go. "What do you need me to do and when?" "I need a gun and a knife." "A gun and a knife? Shouldn't you be able to get them yourself? How do you expect me to get a gun without being noticed?" He kissed his teeth. "I have limited options. Amore (love) but not to worry. All you need to get is the knife; someone else is on the gun; place it at the door I told you about." Cara sighed. Locating the door without being noticed would not be easy but with little directions from him, she was willing to try. Just one final question. "When are you coming?" Antonio took another pause before he answered. "In 24 hours.""Why aren't you leaving?" Adonis asked Luca as the rest of the room dispersed, still in their dazed state. No one had ever seen Cara in that light, not to talk more about the outburst she had. The words she said came as a shock to some, then as a low blow to others, particularly Adonis himself. He could only stare blankly as though they were nothing more than ordinary words, but the withdrawn expression on his face as soon as she stormed out the door spoke volumes of how he felt.He shouldn't be hurt. It was nothing. He didn't care about what others thought of him, and that's how he had always lived, but his heart didn't agree with that theory anymore. "You messed up, man," Luca stated in an emotionless voice.Adonis ignored him, heading back to the work he had at hand before the show. He heaved a deep sigh, taking a seat at his desk."She wanted the truth.""And you could've placed it down in a different manner. You were being so carefree about it. Like her life meant nothing to you
Cara's POV Ever heard the saying, 'What you see is not always what you get?' The composer couldn't have been more right. That's how I feel right now. I thought I'd seen all that there was to Adonis. I was wrong. These days I think I've become a poet.No. Poet isn't the right word; maybe an artist, because the interpretations of most phrases and sayings, which I thought were just filled with fancy words, kept coming to me. Locating the hidden back door was easy. Stealing a knife from the kitchen was easier; to the workers, I was still the lady of the house, so no one questioned my decisions or movements. What was hard was the journey to the door itself.I'd been living in the mansion for more than six months and had spent approximately five months as Mrs Bernardi, during which I believed I'd seen and known all that there was to him and his lifestyle, but once again, I couldn't have been more wrong.Walking through the underground tunnel was creepy enough that it made my skin crawl,
Cara's POV Antonio narrowed his eyes at me, then at Adonis's arm that was wrapped around my waist possessively. His eyes met mine again, and his lips curled up in a realizing smile."You decided to switch sides, mi amore (my love)?""I was never on your side." I hissed.Okay, maybe at the beginning I was, but that was beside the point.Luca stood opposite me with a hard look on his face, Antonio was still sitting with a smirk. I don't know if it felt right in this situation, yet I was digging the attention Natasha kept throwing my way through unbelievable glances. I could practically see the confused words written on her face, and it felt satisfying. It had taken a lot of self-control to prevent myself from snapping her neck, and I must say, the look on her face was worth it.Antonio sat up."Even after you found out he had been lying to you? That he killed your father on purpose and hid the truth about your birth from you?" He gave a small laugh. "If I knew a good f*ck could make y
Flashback: The night Cara found out she was pregnant...By the time he was done, Cara had her mouth wide open, staring at him with pure dread as she reconsidered if waiting for the raging man in front of her was the right choice.Adonis exhaled heavily, then he looked down at her, and all traces of anger dispersed. His gaze showed everything and more. He had decided to heal and bare himself before her. He was letting her know that this was it for him. Love might be a difficult emotion for him, but he was willing to try; he wasn't going to run away anymore. They didn't need access to an end to have a new beginning, but it was what they both wanted.A month to heal.A month to grow.A month to start afresh. He was letting her know that she wouldn't wait too long. Maybe it was worth it after all. Their relationship was one of a kind. They were doing everything backwards, but she didn't care. As long as it helped them grow. She wasn't going to let him down again. It was time to put the
Flashback: The day of the funeral..."I don't like her," Cara confessed, and Adonis raised an eyebrow at her."You don't even know her." She pursed her lips."I don't have to know her to not like her. Call it female intuition." "Well, good for you. I'm going to bed." He replied before walking back into the room, and she stared after him with a dissatisfied pout.Adonis found it weird, too, but he wasn't going to tell her that. What was Natasha doing here? He hadn't seen her in a while since when Luca said she'd come over with extra men to help out during the break-in. Honestly, things hadn't been the same between them since their engagement was called off four years ago, so he wondered why she always visited the mansion with one excuse or the other. Her father didn't say a word about her coming over when he saw him at the funeral so why did she come over?Adonis closed his eyes, relaxing into the bed, as the stress of the day finally caught up with him.Whatever she was here for,
Flashback: After Antonio's call to Cara...Just as the call disconnected, Cara caught sight of a long-fair-skinned heel turning around at the corridor leading to the walk-in closet. The phone in her shaky hands crashed to the ground, and she fell to her knees, her hand to her chest, trying to calm her raging heartbeat. A mixture of both thrill and fear went through her, and it felt like she could finally breathe again. She let out a small laugh. Was this how Adonis usually felt when he was one step ahead of his enemies? She had barged into his study to let him know of her suspicions of Natasha, but the words the said 'Natasha' spewed caused it all to go in a new direction. At first, Cara was pissed. So he was sharing information about her with Natasha now?She had thought, but his laid-back expression made her apprehensive. Adonis was naturally always laid back and unbothered, but this time, it felt like he wanted her to feel that he was. That was the first tip-off. Adonis never do
Flashback: After Antonio's call to Luca.Luca's face scrunched up in confusion as he stared down at his phone. Things were beginning to get real.He was the last person he expected Antonio to call—well, Adonis was, but that wasn't an option— so the call had come as a surprise to him. Yet it didn't even hold a candle to the main stunner. 'Your loyalty is being doubted because it is given to the wrong person. I'm sure your friend never told you that Dimitri killed your grandfather. How do you think your father became consigliere at a young age?'Two things occurred to him the moment those words were out of Antonio's mouth. 1.) Adonis was right. Their last conversation was being monitored as he'd suspected.2.) Shock. How did Antonio get access to that information? Only a few in the Bernardi family knew about it. As if to confirm his first theory, Natasha stepped out of Adonis's room and her expression immediately switched from an anxious to a startled one the moment her eyes came in
Present day Cara's POV "For some reason, the word 'amore' was beginning to get on my nerves."My face flushed red, and my shoulders slumped in relief. I sent a glare to Luca. "If you were on our side, you should've said so. Why did you make me worry for nothing?"He stuck his tongue out at me."You never told me of your plans too." Ignoring the big baby in front of me, my eyes looked down to address Antonio."I warned you not to call me amore (love).""Let him be Bel." Adonis took a step forward."Today's his last day alive anyway."His venomous gaze never once left the man clutching his thigh in pain as blood seeped through his trousers. The previous Cara would've been shaking in fear, but I'd seen my fair share of gruesomeness, and this was nothing compared to it. Antonio must have shared the same sentiment with me because despite the pain, his hard stare didn't leave Adonis, who took another step towards him."Thank you for making it easier for me. Do you know how long I sear
Cara's POV "Tell me why I decided to do this again," Cecelia asked as we ducked behind a blue sedan. We had been watching Luca for the past thirty minutes, yet he hadn't done anything apart from sipping overly priced coffee.I glanced behind me."Because we are curious, and we need to be sure." "It doesn't look like he's expecting anyone. Could I have been wrong?" She asked again and I could hear guilt in her voice.Even I was beginning to think this was fruitless. Tailing him wasn't easy, especially since it's something he was a pro at. We had to be extra careful to avoid being caught. Now it seemed like we had been suspicious of him for no reason."You said you were sure?"Cecelia nodded, then added, "Although I'm not so sure anymore." I sighed heavily, already feeling drained."Why don't we wait a few minutes more, and if there's nothing to see, we can leave? There's no harm in that, right?" Personally, I found it hard to believe our suspicions, but this was the first time I w
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
