Adonis stomped down the stairs furiously, a confused Luca who didn't know exactly why he was angry, chasing after him.
All he knew was they were having a discussion and making good progress until the telephone call. Adonis marched into the living room, his deep voice calling for his wife. "Cara?" He got no reply. "Adonis, what's going on?" Luca asked, but Adonis ignored him and stalked up to a guard by the door. "You! Where's my wife?" The guy looked like he was about to pee in his pants. Although buff, he wasn't a tall guy, and the stare-down he received from Adonis made him feel frightened even though he wasn't the source of Capo's anger. He pointed towards the stairs. "Upstairs. Second floor." "Doing what? With who?" Adonis snapped at him. "I don't know. She just told me she was expecting someone, and I should send him up when he gets here." Adonis wheeled around and stomped back up the stairs towards the second floor. "Adonis wait up! What's going on?" Luca followed closely behind as they reached the second floor. "Cara. She had the audacity to... " To what? Luca waited, but his next words died down at the sight in front of him. Adonis let out a low, pissed-off growl. Following the direction of his gaze, his eyes were met with Cara doing some stretches, the best she could with casts on, in the gym. That was fine. The problem was she was practically naked. He looked back to his side, hoping to pacify Adonis before he went ballistic, but Adonis wasn't there anymore. He was storming towards Cara. Oh boy! "What the hell are you wearing?" He bellowed, taking an unknowing Cara by surprise "Oh! When did you get here?" She asked, still doing simple stretches. "Don't ignore me. What are you wearing?" "Workout clothes?" Adonis eyed the booty shorts and sports bra she had on that practically left nothing to the imagination. Cara had gone with that particular outfit on purpose. It would be needed to achieve the goal she had in mind for the day. She looked down at her outfit and wondered if she overdid it. "You'd be better off walking around naked." "You think so? Maybe I should try that." "Are you crazy? I have men stationed everywhere. How do you expect them to act seeing their Capo's wife flaunt her privates everywhere?" She snorted. "How would I know? I'm not them. Moreover, I'm expecting company, so I'm not going to step out of here." "Yeah. Do you mind explaining why I got a call that your ex is on my estate grounds?" "He's here already? Thank God. I thought he wasn't going to make it." Adonis groaned as flexing his tense fingers. He felt like strangling or punching someone. Anything. Just a way to vent out his frustration and anger? "So you got dressed up for him?" "No. I got dressed to train to fight!" "What training? You can't even walk without a crutch. Are you even listening to yourself? You sound like a dumb person trying to prove she's not dumb." "Hmm.. guys?" Luca spoke up They both snapped their heads towards him. "What is it?!" "Hey! No shouting at me. I just got a call; should he be allowed in or not?" "No!" "Yes! You're not going to control me, Adonis. I just got another chance at life, which is your fault; thank you very much, and I will not be defined by my past. I've placed it all behind me." Adonis fumed. Was this how it was going to be? Does she think he doesn't know that Kane worked with the Grecos? Well, two can play this game. If this is the path she wants to take, so be it. "Fine. Do whatever you want. I'll do whatever I want too." "I hope I'm not interrupting anything." Kane walked in, his calm outer demeanour totally contrasting how he felt within. All eyes fell on him. Cara smiled "Kane darling?" Luca couldn't believe his eyes. "Isn't that—" Adonis hummed, glaring at Kane before walking off to his study. Luca pelted questions upon questions at Adonis the minute they got back. "I know that guy. I saw him in the footage—the one where your drink was tainted with that aphrodisiac. I thought you said he cheated on her." "I don't know what goes on in that little head of hers." "Surely his intentions are not pure... walking in here knowing what he did to you, he must have some sort of backing." Adonis chuckled darkly. "I guess we'd have to wait to find out." ***** As soon as Adonis left the gym, Cara changed out of her outfit to something more decent. Her work was done, and from the look in Kane's eyes when he walked in, she knew she wouldn't have to continue her charade for too long before he became hooked. She gave an excuse about how tired she was to exercise and suggested a simple hangout instead, although she spent the entire time throwing subtle hints at him and flirting shamelessly. If she knew this would be so effective, she'd have implemented it a long time ago. Getting to make Adonis jealous while pretending to be totally under the Grecos palm was something she enjoyed a little more than she should. She felt a hand on her thigh, snapping her out of her thoughts. "So," Kane started, with a small caress that made Cara want to retch. "I think I should be on my way now. You'll call me right?" Cara gave a perfectly constructed fake smile. "Of course. I didn't know how much I missed you until now. I can't wait to see you again." Seeing him off to the end of the second floor, she waved him goodbye, returning to the room. Kane had just placed a foot past the door when he felt a strong, firm hand shoot out to grab him. He felt the cold butt of the gun press into his neck. A soft click sounded as the person took the safety out. "Don't do anything stupid and come with me."Luca quietly escorted a fearful Kane to the garage. He took a step back, his gun still pointed at him as he activated the unlock system. The wall pulled back, showing a narrow, dim path that led underground."Get in." He orderedKane followed without a single protest. He believed he had the protection of the Grecos as promised, but he doubted if it was up to this point, so he cooperated.Better to be safe than sorry. They worked down the narrow path, further into the underground tunnel, until they reached a big brass door.Luca knocked twice. Once. Then thrice, and the door was opened from within. He pushed Kane in, causing him to stumble. As soon as he found his footing, Kane's eyes widened at the state of the room.Being used to their way of life, he wasn't surprised that they had an underground basement. In their world, it was a necessary place to conduct violent business without distractions, but the state of the room made him wonder if he'd ever come out of there alive. It was li
Cara's POVI sighed in relief, sinking further into the bathtub as the warm water engulfed my body, soothing my aches. It's been two months since the day Kane came to the mansion for the first time. Two months since I became Mrs. Bernardi, and to say it has been one hell of a roller-coaster would be putting it mildly. Adonis had been the same as always, controlling, chauvinistic, arrogant, and hot-headed, and I was the stubborn one. Although, compared to how we started, there was now a mutual understanding.Something like respect and care between roommates. Nothing more. Except you don't sleep with your roommate at every given chance.Life as Mrs. Bernardi has been good to me. It was nice knowing I could live comfortably without having to worry about survival. The sex, on the other hand, as always, was mind-blowing.We'd bicker back and forth and have intense arguments that always ended with both of us panting heavily on the bed. Sometimes in the bathroom, other times in his study.
Cara's POV"Adonis," I called out softly. "Adonis, get up. You're bleeding."The black shirt he had on was torn in several places, and his left cheek was a little swollen. He had a small but deep cut on the left side of his eyebrow. My eyes scanned his form in search of the main source of the excessive bleeding. "Adonis. Come on." I called again when he didn't reply the first time but got nothing again. No way. He can't be dead, right?I crawled over to his side of the bed, giving him a shake, desperately trying to wake him up."Adonis, are you dead? Please wake up. I'm getting scared." I roughly shook him until he released a groan, popping one eye open."What is it?" He rasped"You're bleeding. We've got to get you to the hospital or call Dr. Bruno. I can't leave you bleeding out like this, please." My voice was heavy with worry and moisture glinting in my eyes. Why was I pleading? The reason was unknown to me too. Adonis grumbled, stiffly dragging himself up the bed to get more
"Babbo (father)?"Little Adonis abruptly sat up from his bed at the sound of a door closing. He was a very light sleeper and usually woke up at the littlest noise."Babbo (father), is that you?" His legs touched the ground as he rubbed at his sleepy eyes. It was his room back in the Italy mansion. The home he grew up in for a while and knew like the back of his hand. He'd come down with a cold the previous day, so his nanny was fast asleep beside him. The cunning little child carefully slipped out, hoping not to be noticed.Getting to the entrance of the hall, he looked around for the expected guard who wasn't at his post. Happily, the six-year-old child trodded the big empty corridors in search of his father. Everyone was asleep, as they should be around midnight, so no one stopped him on the way.He was sure he had heard the sound of a door being shut, but which of the doors? That he didn't know.Adonis walked quickly in the direction of his father's room. That was another thing
Cara's POVI woke up to the familiar sound of painful grunts. Or should I say I never really slept? Tossing over, I switched on the bedside lamp.Adonis's brows were pulled down, cold sweat all over his face as he lay stiffly. He was having sleep paralysis again, and this was the third time in three days. Ever since that night...I don't know what to do anymore. I've tried talking to him, but I'll be better off speaking to a fish than Adonis. I've tried reaching out to Luca and Cecelia, but Luca's line hasn't been going through. I'm guessing he's still recovering, and that's justified. Reaching out to Nadia and Dimitri crossed my mind, but I didn't want them to worry. His grunts increased, and I softly shook him awake."Adonis. Adonis wake up." As usual, he didn't, and I tried the second time, more forcefully. "Adonis, wake up!" His eyes flung open, his chest moving up and down in rapid pants as he tried to make sense of his surroundings. I took his hand in mine, rubbing it in comf
"Si Padre (yes, father), I'll come visit soon," Luca said in a low voice. "No. Nothing's wrong; we've just been so busy. Yes, the coronation has been postponed, but there's so much work to do here. You know we've been expanding territory." He took the phone away from his ear to let out a painful groan. Taking quick, rapid breaths until the pain in his abdomen had subsided. He placed the phone back in his ear."Sorry, I didn't get that." He paused, and his father repeated the unheard words. "Yes. Adonis is a born leader. I promise to come visit you with Cecelia soon. Yeah bye. Say hi to Lilian for me." Luca dropped the phone immediately the call ended as though it were a hot, boiling kettle. His two hands went to his abdomen, and he closed his eyes tightly at the pain. It's been three days since they got back from their recent mission. Three days since he'd stepped out of the house. Three days since he'd seen Adonis. The last sentence caused a spark of hurt in his chest. He wasn't
Cecelia was taken aback."What do you mean?" "Don't, what did you mean, me, babe? You know what I'm talking about?" Luca retorted with a glare, which she equally matched."I do not. If I do, I wouldn't be asking." He drew in a calming breath."Who were you on the phone with? What was that all about? You were giving info. about us." She let out a scoff in disbelief."Are you seriously doubting me?" "Stop avoiding the questions and just answer." Cecelia gaped at Luca, appalled at his attitude. She couldn't believe it. He was truly doubting her. She was here taking care of his injured butt, and he was doubting her. "If you must know, I was on a call with Tina. She asked for updates. Here." She dumped her phone in his hand. "You can go through my call log. Since you need evidence for everything I do now." She walked away to the room and began to pack her things. She wasn't going to stay with a man who didn't trust her.Still adamant about what he heard, Luca unlocked her phone and
The light mood in the room disappeared, and Luca felt the previous sense of distress return."Luca I'm worried. I don't know what to do anymore. Ever since the day he got back, he rarely speaks, he rarely eats, and he doesn't do anything but lock himself in his study, only coming out at night. But he can't even sleep." Cara informed him with a worried look."What exactly happened? I need to know to help him. What caused him to drastically change overnight?"Luca released a sigh. He understood what Cara was trying to say and how she felt, but he wasn't in the right position to divulge any kind of information to her. That was Adonis's right."I think I want to know too." Cece piped up. "Baby, I know this is part of your line of work, but I've never seen Adonis react this way. Look at yourself. You may think I didn't notice, but you've been downcast too. Is everything fine? Tell us..."Cara's eyes scanned Luca's face. He might be looking better for someone who had gunshot wounds, but th
Cara's POV "Wait, back up!" I repositioned myself to be sure I was comfortable. Hearing the wrong thing was possible when in discomfort. Believe me, caring for Adonis, I have experienced a lot. There was a time I ran out of the bathroom with lather all over my body thinking I heard him call my name—that is beside the point anyway. I looked up at a disturbed Cecelia."What did you just say?""I said Luca is—"Not that! I heard you clearly the first time; I just find it hard to believe. You mean Luca. Luca Romano?" The same Luca that had encouraged me to get together with Adonis when I barely knew him?Impossible. Cecelia wiped her face again, staring at me with a 'Is my life now a joke to you?' look. I held up my hand in surrender. "You can't blame me. I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't coming from you. You know how much he loves love. You know what?" My face hardened. It may seem unbelievable, but the look in Cecelia's eyes told me it was a delicate situation."Him asking to
Cara's POV"Thank you," I said softly as the doctor wiped away what was left of the gel on my protruding belly. I was in a hurry to get back to the mansion.. in a hurry to see Adonis. It wasn't like he could speak or even blink at me, but being in his presence alone was calming. It made me feel content. Just seeing the light rise and fall of his chest reminded me that there was still hope. Done with my check-up for the day, I stepped out of the hospital with my bodyguards behind me, ushering me into the car, and then we were off. It's been a month since that night. Over seven since I met him, and four since I got pregnant. The time was so little, but a lot had changed. I remember thinking to myself a few months back that I wanted my father's killers gone within six months of being Mrs Bernardi. If you asked me now, everything was so wrong with that thought. The next thing I knew after Alvaro delivered the news to myself and Luca, I was waking up on a bed. It seemed like passing
Luca gave Miguel a pointed look, waiting for him to speak up and say it was a prank, but the elderly man's face remained as stoic as ever. He snorted. Then looking over to Cara, who had on a dumbstruck look, his eyebrows pulled down in a frown, He wasn't the only one who thought that to be blasphemy. There's no way she believed Miguel, right? Her expression said otherwise. This time, he couldn't stop the snort from turning into uncontrollable laughter.By the time he was able to pull himself together, Luca had moisture seeping out of the corner of his eyes. They met Miguel's hard expression again, and all remnants of the smile on his face disappeared."You're serious?"Miguel stared back in reply, and he let out a chuckle that wasn't by any means light."Antonio and Adonis are half-brothers? What sort of deceit is this? Are you feeding us lies? Why would his grandfather hide this from him?" "Dimitri didn't know until his son confessed it during his last days." Luca ran a hand th
Cara's hand moved to cover her mouth, which had dropped open. "Are you saying you're my father?" "Let me reintroduce myself." Miguel leaned forward. "My name is Miguel Rodriguez, leader of the Spanish mafia, and you, Camila Rodriguez, are my only heir." "Well, that's just... f*cked up..." She trailed off with an incredulous look. Her second reason for coming along was to see if she could find any clue about her birth parents since her father was suspected to be part of the Spanish mafia, but this revelation tipped the scale. She wouldn't have imagined something like this in a million years. Taking a seat, before her shaky legs gave out, she spoke."I thought I was adopted but found out recently that I wasn't. My parents weren't who I thought they were..." She started, explaining her recent findings to him.Miguel hummed."What were their names?""Adrian and Martha Rodriguez." The name brought a bitter look to Miguel's face."Adrian is my money-hungry cousin. He has a gambling ad
Cara's POV I took a cautious step back, eyeing him wearily."How do you know my name?"He still had that look of disbelief—no. It had evolved into something more sentimental. A mixture of both sadness and hope."You have her eyes," Miguel responded. "Whose eyes?" "Your mother's." "Y—" I frowned. "You know my mother? She died of cancer a few years ago." He shook his head in disagreement."No. Tatianna died in an accident." I took another step back, getting ready to bolt out of the building if necessary. "I do not follow." Luca stepped forward. "Neither do I. We didn't come here for this, Mr. Miguel. Hand over our capo and men, and we'll be on our way." "You took my shipment," Miguel replied in a bored tone."We did nothing of the sort. We didn't even know that the Spanish mafia was still involved in the dealings. We had planned to poach all your suppliers and buyers, not steal from you. That is beneath us. Imagine how surprised we were to get your note." Alvaro scoffed."Tha
Cara POVThere was no time to waste. Within an hour, all the men were packed, and we were ready to leave.I sat at the back of the seat of the car as Luca drove with Cecelia by his side. She had woken up just as I was about to leave and insisted on coming along."Where's their base?" I asked as he started the car.Luca shrugged."Two hours away from here, but I can make it within one if I step on it." In less time, we were approaching the estate gate, and he spoke in a hard voice, "State tutti attention, il gioco inizia adesso (everyone be alert, the game starts now)."I didn't need an interpretation to know that he was addressing the men behind us. We were about to go into an unknown territory. He slowed down as the gate was thrown open, switching gears as he regarded me and Cecelia this time, "Buckle up. This is going to be a rough drive." And then, we were off.****As promised, we got to our destination early, and I couldn't stop the eerie and jittery feeling I felt as I stood
Cara's POV I once heard the sound of the summer rain was like a balm to a soothing ache. Whoever said that was wrong. My ache wasn't being soothed. If anything, I've just become more aware of how empty the enormous room was. Sitting on the bed behind the covers, staring blankly at the rain as it drew patterns on the window, I looked like a beauty locked up in a luxurious apartment by her beast.Maybe they were right. Just that a balm couldn't be applied to a heart injury. The last time I was here, I left with a giddy feeling, hoping to be back as soon as we achieved our goal. The goal had been achieved. But I was the only one back.Heavy thunder cackled as though it was laughing at my predicament. Ever since I met Adonis, it's been one issue or another. I don't think we've ever gone a month without blood being spilt in the mansion.I knew what I signed up for when I agreed to be with a mafia man, but it was beginning to seem like all he was surrounded by were lies and enemies.I'd
Luca stared at Cara in shock. The Spanish mafia was the strongest of all the mafia families. Even the Bernardis couldn't compare. They'd been in existence long before the Italian mafia found its feet. But that was until a few years back. No one had heard from them in a long time. From what he could recollect, what was left of them had gone into hiding shortly after the attack that almost destroyed their family. Even he didn't know the whole truth exactly, as he was still a child, so he didn't witness their reign or when the attack happened. All he knew from the stories they were told was that the Spanish mafia was not to be messed with, and there was very little of them remaining. It was like they decided to step back after it happened and kept their hands off everything that had to do with the mafia world. Now Adonis was missing, with only their emblem as a clue, and Cara claims to know them?Taking his eyes off her for a minute, he announced."Call back all the men. Tell them we
Cara's POVI pushed my way through the sea of men gathered at the clearing in front of the mansion, stalking up to unknowing Luca, who was busy pelting orders at the men."Luca!" He wheeled around, searching for the source of the voice, and his eyes widened into saucers when they saw me."Why are you here?"I narrowed my eyes at him in disbelief. "Why am I here? Why are you all here?""You're not supposed to know." "That would've worked out if you didn't give me the band." I waved it in his face. "What do you mean Adonis is missing? Isn't he meant to be at the hospital undergoing surgery by now?" Luca avoided my gaze, and my heart skipped a beat. I drew in a shaky breath."What is it? Tell me what happened." I stumbled. "Cara!""I'm fine. Tell me... tell me precisely.""He never made it to the hospital," Luca replied in a small voice, but I heard it. My stomach tightened in knots at his response. It can't be what I'm thinking, right? There's no way Adonis would give up so easil
