Jemima's POV
After Adrian finished talking to me, I lay back on the makeshift bed, staring at the shadows on the ceiling as my mind raced with too many questions. The forest, the runes, Adrian’s cryptic warnings—it was all too much. My eyelids became heavier by the second, and I allowed the whole exhaustion I felt swallow me whole.
But even the sleep wasn’t so good. It was anything but.
I had a dream, and in that dream, I found myself standing in the living room of my childhood home. The familiar scent of the place giving me a feeling that I had not felt in a long time. Everything looked just the same as I last remembered. The worn out couch by the window, the ugly coffee table with the markings on top of it that was there. But something felt wrong.
Terribly wrong.
My cheeks were wet. I reached up and touched my face, surprised to see that I was crying. My chest felt as if someone had punched a massive hole in it, as if all the joy had been scooped out and replaced with a void I couldn’t fill even if I tried for a thousand years.
“Mom?” My voice cracked as I called out. “Dad?”
Silence.
I walked through confines of the house, every step I took heavy and deliberate. Everything and every emotion I remember having from here was gone and was replaced by the way everywhere was still and calm and so quiet. When I reached the back door, I hesitated. My hand trembled as I turned the door knob.
Outside, the world seemed to change so quickly before my eyes. I was no longer at home but instead, I was standing in a forest clearing at the base of an ancient tree. Its ragged branches reached out like hands that were twisted, and the bark was carved with strange runes, the same ones Adrian and I had seen in the forest earlier.
I felt something cold run down from my chest to my stomach and down my spine. “What…?”
The air felt as if it was charged with electric, as if the forest itself was alive. I looked up, and my heart stopped. There was a snake, its scales shining in shades of green and black, coming down from the trunk of the large tree. The snake had its eyes staring right at me, as if it was boring into the back of my head and to my soul. I tried to scream, but no sound came out.
I woke up with a start, my chest going up and down in ragged breaths. Before I could gather my thoughts or even say anything, I felt a hand closing over my mouth. All the antennas and bulbs in my head went off with alarm and my instincts kicked in. I struggled, kicking wildly against whoever was holding me captive.
Maybe they were here. Maybe they had come for the weak wolf just like Adrian said they would.
“Jemima,” Adrian hissed, his face very close to mine. “Stop! It’s me.”
My thrashing about slowed down as I began to recognize him. His hand still stayed closed firmly over my mouth as if he didn’t still trust that I wasn’t going to scream, and his eyes went to the doorway.
“Listen,” he whispered.
I froze, my ears on alert straining to hear what he had to say. At first, I heard nothing but the intense and loud pounding of my heart. Then faintly, there was the sound of heavy footsteps. They were not just there, there was something about them that wasn’t just random or any footstep. There was a rhythm to them, like something—or someone—was moving with purpose.
Adrian slowly removed his hand from my mouth. “Stay quiet,” he mouthed.
My heart was racing so fast I thought whoever—or whatever—was out there would hear it. I leaned closer to Adrian and whispered to him in a low tone of voice. “What is it?”
He shook his head. “I don’t know yet.”We stayed like that for what felt like a hundred years, listening to the noises grow louder, then fainter, then louder again. My mind by itself, came up with images of creatures coming to us, their eyes glowing a dark green in the dark.
Finally, Adrian motioned for me to follow him. “We need to move,” he said softly. “Quietly.”
I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. I heard that voice again, telling me this wasn’t just a warning, it was a threat. And my wolf didn’t make it any better. She was practically screaming at me to stay back. My legs felt like jelly as I stood, but Adrian steadied me with a firm grip on my arm.
We came out of the small cabin we were staying in, the cool night air embracing us like it was there for us the whole time. The forest was very quiet now, as if it was holding its breath, waiting for us to come into the middle before it devoured us. The light from the moon casted a dull glow on the forest, lighting up the path ahead of us.
“Do you know where we’re going?” I asked, my voice barely audible.
Adrian glanced at me. “To find whatever it is that’s doing this. That’s all that matters, both for you and the pack. But first, we’re going to where all the pack members are.”
I didn’t argue. The tension in his voice was enough to tell me this wasn’t the time for questions. Still, a dozen thoughts bounced unevenly in my head. I wondered what was happening. I wasn’t as strong as other wolves.
It was as if he knew the exact question that was on my mind. “That stone you touched that gave you visions, that’s why I’m bringing you here. If the stone can show you visions, it means, no harm can come to you.” He hesitated for a moment. “At least that’s what I think. Whatever it comes to, I will protect you.”
“Adrian,” I whispered after a few minutes. “In my dream, I saw those runes again. The ones on the tree.”
He stopped immediately and turned to face me. “What else did you see?”
I hesitated. “A snake. It was watching me.”
His expression became dark. “That’s not just a dream, Jemima.”
I frowned. “What do you mean? It felt so real, but dreams can feel that way sometimes.”
Adrian shook his head. “No, this is different. Those runes, that tree, they’re connected to something very old, something very powerful. And if the snake appeared to you…” He trailed off, his jaw tightening.
“What? If the snake appeared to me, what does that mean?” My voice was a little bit more loud but the way Adrian’s looked at me silenced me.
“We’ll talk about it later,” he said, his tone firm. “Right now, we need to focus on dealing with all this first.”
I wanted to press him for answers, but the urgency in his eyes stopped me. We continued walking, the silence between us heavy with all the things that were left unsaid.
After what felt like hours, I sank onto the log, my legs trembling with exhaustion. “Adrian,” I said, my voice cracking. “I need to know what’s going on. You keep saying we’ll talk later, but I can’t keep being blind about all this.”
He hesitated, running a hand through his hair. “Fine,” he said finally, turning to face me. “But you have to promise to stay calm.”
I nodded. “I promise.”
He sighed and said something to the pack through the mind link then looked at me. “We need to keep moving though, the pack won’t meet us here.
My stomach dropped again. “What about the snake? What does that mean?”
He looked at me, confused. “What snake?”
I sighed. “The one I told you I saw in my dream, just before you woke me up, it was coming down from the large tree in the forest and I didn’t know what it meant when you wone me up.” I finished and looked up at him.
He hesitated again, his eyes locking onto mine. “The snake is something I don’t even know. Honestly, I don’t know what it means, but we have to find out and we have to do it quick. We don’t have much time.”
His words hit me like a punch to the chest. That’s it, Jemima, stop with the questions already. It’s not helping anybody.
I looked away, my mind racing. The dream, the runes, the snake, it all felt too much, too overwhelming. Like it was pulling me under. Right under it all. “So, what do we do now?”
“We keep moving,” Adrian said firmly. “We find out what the snake’s message was, and we figure out how to stop whatever’s coming.”
I nodded, although I felt a little bit of doubt in my chest but I quickly brushed it off and replaced it with the faith and the confidence I had in Adrian. Adrian sounded so sure, but I wasn’t. How could I be? I was just Jemima, an ordinary wolf that had managed to be in the middle of something extraordinary.
Jemima's POVThe night was so heavy around us, so intense and quiet, the kind of silence that presses down on your chest like a foreign presence. Adrian’s voice echoed in my mind through the pack's mind link.“Shift. Now.”I didn’t hesitate. The command surged through me, setting my veins on fire. One by one, the others responded, their human forms shifting into powerful wolves with thick fur and sharp, dark claws. The shift came over me like something I wasn’t prepared for, pulling me under and spitting me out in my wolf form. My senses sharpened instantly, every sound, every scent, every movement in the forest felt as if it was amplified in my headAnd then, there was nothing. No more thudding, no more rustling. Just silence. The kind that wasn’t natural. The kind that made the fur on the back of my neck stand up.“Stay alert,” Adrian warned through the link. His voice was calm, but I could sense the tension that came with it. “Something’s out there.”I bent down low, my claws digg
Adrian’s POVThe attack came from nowhere, as they normally happen. One moment I was catching my breath after another kill, the metallic taste of blood sharp on my tongue. The next, I was helping Jemima up, and the very next moment, a wolf pounced at me from the shadows, its claws bared and scraping across my side.I staggered but still stayed standing, baring my teeth in a snarl. It was big, bigger than most, but the anger in me gave me strength. I lunged forward, meeting it at once. We tumbled together into the forest, snapping and clawing each other, trying to find an opening for a kill.“Adrian!” Jemima’s voice echoed faintly through the mind link, but the wolf drove me more far away from her. I felt a hint of worry settle down in the pit of my stomach and it had nothing to do with the fight. The wolf went for my neck and he aimed his teeth for a kill but I twisted and turned, managing to grab its throat in my mouth. My thigh burned with a sudden, deep pain, so sharp it almost put

Everything about me felt paralyzed. It was too bright for my liking. Jemima lay in my arms, her body lifeless and limp, her breathing shallow. At least she was still breathing. The rising run focused its light on her skin, and it shined like she wasn’t dying in my arms. For a brief moment there, she looked like a goddess, too perfect to be real.“Come on, Jemima,” I murmured, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. “You don’t get to quit on me now. You hear me? You’re tougher than this.”She didn’t stir, she didn’t even move or shake. My wolf growled restlessly in the back of my mind, he was angry and desperate. Jemima’s POVThe world came back to me slowly at first. It was blurry images, muffled sounds, and a heavy, almost pain going through my whole body. Then, all at once, I felt something, as if someone was tugging my eyes open, or begging me to open my eyes. I couldn’t really tell. But my eyes shot open, my senses returning in sharp snippets it was almost too much to take in at once.I was moving. No, I was bouncing. My body rising and falling in an uneven motion, like I was being carried. What the hell? The morning light filtered in through the trees, casting a bright glow on everything. It took me a second to realize I wasn’t on the ground. I was suspended. My heart raced as I looked down and saw the broad shoulders under me. Adrian.I was on Adrian’s back.It wasn’t just that realization that shocked me, it was the fact that I was clothed, too. My cheeks heated up immediately on its own accord, but I pushed the embarrassment aside.“Adrian,” I said through the mind link, my voice shar
Jemima's POVI looked around to be sure that we weren't longer in the woods. Adrian was staring at me with keen interest. I dropped my hand by my side and look away in embarrassment.“Are you sure you're okay?” He asked again, walking beside me. The sounds of his men trolling behind could be heard. “Jemima” he called, tapping on my shoulder and I coughed lightly.“I'm fine, trust me” I said, covering up my whole act with a smile.“You don't look good, though” he said and I chuckled dryly.I don't know how long we've been walking, but I knew it's up to an hour already. I scratched my head as my mind wandered off to Garrett. Is he okay?“I was worried earlier when you transformed. I thought you wouldn't make it” He said, his voice sounding low and calm. I sighed. Studying his expression alone, I knew he was worried. It was written all over his face."I'm sorry'' I bit my lower lips, pressing my hands together.“It's fine, Jemima. You're okay, that's what matters to me” he smiled at me w
Adrian's POVMy eyes widened in surprise on seeing what just happened right before my naked eyes. Did jasmine just made Garrett make use of his legs again after all hope we're lost?It happened so fast that I couldn't predict it. Firstly, the wounds in her thighs closed up by itself and I waved it off and now Garrett sudden healing. How's that even possible? Something seems off, and I can't wait to figure it out.I grabbed her wrist and pulled her closer, my eyes searching for answers, but before I could say anything she wriggled her hand off and ran away., heading towards her room. I sighed and ran after her. I called her name repeatedly, but she didn't even turn to spare me a glance even for a minute. She finally got to her doorstep and she pushed her door opened and went inside, and I wanted to follow her in, but she slammed the door to my face and I groaned, stepping backward feeling like a complete loser.I yelled angrily and started hitting the wall with my knuckle until blood
Jemima’s POV I didn’t know what exactly to say to Adrian to make him believe me. I didn’t even want to face him because I knew he had a thousand questions for me and I didn’t know how to answer any of them.He should be happy I saved him and he just let me off the hook already. I knew I wouldn’t be able to avoid him forever and he was going to demand an explanation sooner or later but I didn’t know what to say, did I?It’s not like I understood my powers well enough to explain to anyone, but I knew I’d need to make him understand somehow. I felt tired and my body was aching all over as I was struggling to maintain my composure. I was feeling quite hot and tired so decided to have a quick shower.I planned to leave the room and answer whatever questions Adrian would have for me. I went into the shower and had a bath and came out right after changing my dress and I felt more comfortable.I took a deep sigh before opening the door and I walked out of the room. Jemima’s POV“That’s all he said but it doesn’t mean anything, so don’t stress it.”“He said that to you?” She asked excitedly, staring at me like she was about to blow up due to excitement.I didn’t even want to have this conversation with her because I wasn’t exactly excited about it. I heard what he said and I could say that it made me feel good in a sort of way but at the same time, I wasn’t looking forward to anything.“Common Jemima , aren’t you supposed to be excited? It’s obvious that he likes you and is all over you.” Lions said excitedly as she walked over to me.“So excited over what? Don’t even start right now Kiona.” I asked sternly. “Start what? I don’t know what you’re talking about, stop acting so tough Jemima because I know you like him even if you keep on acting like you don’t. I’m pretty sure he’s all over you and what he said just confirms it.” She said excitedly holding my hands but I pulled my hands from there and walked away. “Here we go, Kiona please, I’m n
Adrian’s POVI stared at the kitchen counter, my mind spinning. The mark of the rival pack that was engraved into the wood seemed as if it was mocking me. How the hell did it get here? My hands balled into fists at my sides as I replayed the scene in the forest in my head, my eyes narrowing when I remembered that I saw a wolf retreating into the trees. The tail of the wolf, I realized with a sharp edge. The shape of it was familiar. One of them had escaped, and now this? The thought made my wolf angry. It was too deliberate, too calculated. Someone did this, and I was going to find out who did. Before I could think about it any further, my eyes drifted to Jemima coming down the stairs. She came and sat at the far end of the room, her shoulders were tense and her face looked distant, as if she was thinking about something. Something about her stillness pulled at my heart strings.“Jem,” I said softly, stepping toward her.Her head turned a little, but she didn’t meet my eyes.“You have
