Katherine's POV
The moon hung in the sky, cascading its illuminating lights on the white stone assembled along the walkway leading from the slave quarters to the Alpha's quarters. One stone smaller than the next, revealing a sign of superiority. With each step I took, I felt a heavy burden drop from my chest to my stomach. My heart beat against its cage, sending an influx of horror through my nerves.
I felt as though something bitter was being forced down my throat but I couldn't throw up because my lips had been sealed shut. I grabbed the hem of my faded gown and fixed my gaze on the foot of the guard right in front of me, leading the way to the Alpha's quarters.
I have a secret!
My breath hitched as soon as he stopped walking and I knew we were exactly at the spot where I dreaded the most. I didn't need to look up to know where I was. It was the place I hated most but didn't have a choice to stay away from. I feel like a fool, an idiot for not fighting each time I'm called on. For not running each time I'm pursued. What's the essence of running when death knocks on the door of my soul if I tried to run?
I have a secret.
The door was flung open and a thick, veiny voice resonated from inside. "Come in,"
I shivered in fear of what's to come as the guard gestured for me to go in. I nodded, holding back the shameful tears that were about to drop from my eyes.
I took the first step, took a deep breath too and begged the moon goddess to let this moment go past so fast it would only last a minute.
As I walked into the room, his face came into my line of vision and the door locked behind me. There was no need to run or think about running.
"Hello Katherine,"
I held the hem of my dress, on both sides this time and lifted it over my head. He grinned like a creep and asked me to get onto the bed and hold on to the railings like the bitch that I was.
I have a secret! Every night, I warm the bed of my most hated enemy. The alpha of my pack and the one who rejected me, broke me and sold my soul to the devil.
Five months ago, I was sold to his pack along with fifteen other girls from different packs across the region. Most of the girls were kidnapped from their homes, throwing their families into despair but some of us were sold by our original packs to serve the great Alpha Jackson.
I, particularly, was an orphan who worked as a slave in my old pack and was sold to this pack as a tributary when the chance came for my old Alpha to lick Jackson's ass.
Before arriving at his pack, I'd heard about Jackson and his men. They were notoriously known for their brutality and wickedness especially towards those that were weaker than them. Just above that pyramid was the Lycan King, the one known as the direct descendents of the moon goddess. Rumour has it the two were best friends but no one cares about that. To me, they were all demons released from hell and given a title on earth so they could torment lives.
On getting to the pack, we were arranged into a group of two and given some sultry, revealing dresses to wear before throwing us into the harem.
By night, we were brought out to be introduced to the Alpha and his entourage of sex starving men. No one cared to know us by our names rather by the size of our bodies and stamina in bed.
The leader of the harem held me by the hand and walked me towards the center of the hall. The closer we got, the more enticing and captivating the mysterious scent I'd caught all day became. I didn't dare look up as it was forbidden for a sex slave to look at the King.
There was a surge of emotions through me and I almost bursted into tears as my wolf howled in the head, wanting to be near its mate as soon as possible.
'How could I possibly meet my mate in this situation?'
The leader's tight hold on my arm suddenly lapsed and I was forced to look up for a minute, to know where I was. I was too engrossed in my thoughts of meeting my mate that I lost consciousness of my surroundings for a minute.
My eyes met with that of the man at the head of the table and I stopped breathing. He was handsome, his eyes were deep ombre, challenging a part of me that I didn't know existed. All of a sudden, I noticed the deep frown on his face and I began hearing murmuring.
He stood up from his seat and walked up to me. He grabbed hold of my face, holding so tight I was scared he would crack my jaw. He lifted my face so I could look up at him.
"Alpha Jackson…" someone called from behind me. My eyes went wide in recognition. He was Alpha Jackson, my mate was Alpha Jackson.
"What is your name?" Even though it was a whisper, I could still hear him loud and clear. The same way I could hear my heartbeat.
I wanted to talk but his hold on my jaw prevented me. I grabbed his hand, trying to pry his hold off him but instead he held on tighter.
"I asked you a question, slave,"
"Kat–Katherine," I managed to answer.
"Your last name and your pack?"
I raised an eyebrow, worried about why he needed to know my last name and my pack.
He wasn't even supposed to ask me for my name. We were told earlier they didn't need such information from us.
"Durbey. I'm from the Ocean Waves pack,"
He smirked.
He released my jaw and took quick steps away from me as if I was an abomination.
Several eyes were on me, including his and I felt as though I was a trophy meat on display. I wanted to run and hide. I preferred the harsh treatment I got from my old pack to this. At least, no one stared at me as if they would be happy to shoot an arrow at me.
"I, Jackson Ville reject you Katherine Durbey of the Ocean waves pack,"
A loud, sharp noise rang out in my head. I quickly covered my ears, trying to stop the noise but I soon realized it was coming from me.
My chest tightened and the air around me ceased. I could feel a bead of sweat pooling at my forehead. Before I could lose balance, he grabbed my chin again.
With a hard glare on his face, he demanded, "Accept the rejection,"
I shook my head. Why would I do such a thing? It could kill me.
"No? Accept the rejection or I stand back and watch my men take turn on you,"
Shock overshadowed me but was soon replaced by agony and pain.
Tears rolled down my eyes as I took a deep breath. All I wanted was just to breathe.
Forcefully, I replied.
"I accept the rejection,"
Katherine's POVAfter I accepted his rejection, I was thrown into a dark dungeon for many nights. I experience excruciating pain. I went through hell. It was as though my soul had been gifted to hell and all I experienced was pain and agony. My heart felt so constricted the first night I didn't know I could survive. As I opened my eyes the next morning, I saw a little plate of water and a piece of bread. I couldn't eat. I was too scared of the possibility of being poisoned than to stomach anything. The pain continued the next day, I couldn't feel my wolf, I threw up when my body couldn't hold the pain anymore and ended up passing out most times only to wake to the bright morning of another day. The fifth night came and I was released from the dungeon by a guard who led the way to the Alpha's quarters. I didn't quite understand what was happening. I thought he was accepting me back but when he laid me on my back, took my virginity in a brutal way and sent me out of his room, naked,
Katherine's POVI looked back and forth between both Alpha Jackson and the Lycan King. Not only was I in disbelief of who I just met but also of what I felt for the Lycan King when our fingers brushed. Lowering my gaze slightly, I moved away from the door to allow Alpha Jackson to walk in. I could feel his hot gaze on my face as he did and as soon as he walked down the stairs leading into the wine cellar, I walked out and closed the door behind me. It was punishable by death to wait behind and eavesdrop on their conversation unless called upon. With as little as five wine bottles in my basket, I returned to the feast. The chef gave me a hard glare as I placed all five bottles on the table. "That's all you could bring, you useless wimp," he said through gritted teeth. "I'm sorry," I bowed, apologising. He was the chef, which means he had the authority to kill me or punish me for my foolishness. He was also Jackson's favourite. That gave him the leverage to act in his capacity in t
Katherine's POVTill Kai, the Lycan King left the hall, the silence could be heard. A pin dropping to the floor would be the loudest and deafening sound in the room. Kai held my gaze till he walked out. When I turned my head to Jackson, he had a murderous look on his face. Roma turned to me in panic and that made me stare up at the chef. I had never seen him that scared. He usually had a high shoulder and confidence when moving around the pack house but at that moment, he looked crumbled and defeated. "Let's leave," Roma asked. I nodded and quickly followed the others out of the hall through the back door. Soon, we heard a loud growl from the room. The sounds of plate, tables being thrown against the wall could be heard. It was scary but the scariest thing was the smile that was on the faces of every servant and slave standing in the backyard. Most of them were satisfied about what happened but to me, I was more worried about the outcome. We definitely will be at the receiving end
Katherine's POV The walk from where I saw Roma to the Alpha's quarters was dreadful. Each step I took scared me. I felt as though I was walking into a trap of death. I could turn back and run but that wasn't an option. "You don't have to go if you don't want to, Katherine," Roma suggested.I turned to her. "I can't run," "Why?" She asked with a single eyebrow lifted. "Because it's not even an option," She cursed underneath her breath and held my palm. "Remember the last time he was this angry,"Tears threatened to leak out of my eyes as I nodded, bringing back the horrible memory. He tied me up in his room, beat me repeatedly and did unspeakable things to me. When he finally released me, I couldn't get out of bed for days. I was brutally treated like an animal. "Don't go, please. He already promised to kill five of us if the chef's head ended up on the pyre tomorrow. I'm scared for your life," I nodded. I am scared for my life too. But I don't have a choice. I have nobody. I'm
King Kai’s POVI sat at my desk, surrounded by stacks of documents and maps, my mind focused on the kingdom's trade and commerce. The knock on the door broke my concentration, and I looked up, slightly annoyed. "Enter," I called out, not looking up from the documents. The door creaked open, and a guard stepped inside, his eyes fixated on me. "Your Majesty, I bring a message from Alpha Jackson Connelly’s pack." He approached me, holding out a letter, his hand trembling slightly.I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. What could Alpha Jackson Connelly want with me? We had never been allies, though we have never gotten into war to cause enmity within us. "Let me see it," I said, taking the letter from the guard. As I read the invitation to Alpha Jackson Connelly’s party, I scoffed. A party? What a waste of time. I had more pressing matters to attend to, like ensuring the kingdom's prosperity and security. But then, a thought struck me. Rumours had been circulating about the rapid growth of slav
King Kai’s POVI was busy trading punches with Alpha Jackson but my attention was directed towards Katherine. I saw Roma trying futilely to bring her to her feet and knew I had to end the fight quickly. I tightened my fist and sent a punch into Jackson’s face, he got disbalanced and I followed up with an uppercut. A clean hit to his lower jaw sent him crashing to the ground, leaving me with enough time to tend to Katherine. I rushed towards her, my heart raced with a mix of urgency and concern. held her in my hands and saw she was slipping into unconsciousness.“Stay the fuck with me, Katherine,” I murmured. She didn’t; she took my plea for her to stay awake as a cue to plunge into unconsciousness. “Fuck!” I yelled. I scooped her up and hurried out of the room.“Hang in there Katherine, I’ve got you,” I whispered, trying to comfort her, or trying to comfort myself because my head was going into a spiral.I got her into the backseats of my vehicle and sped off to the pack’s clinic. The
Alpha Jackson's POVThe party I threw was meant to please Kai, the Lycan King, but I could see past the pretence that he was not entertained. He was definitely into something else, someone else; he was into Katherine, or so I thought. I watched and followed the direction of his eyes, and they led to Katherine most of the time. I thought of the time I caught up with him in the wine cellar and concluded he must have had an encounter with her."This is interesting," I thought. "If the party would not please him, perhaps she would".I stood up to give a closing speech and offered to grant one demand in honour of the Lycan King. It was a simple plan to make him pick Katherine since he had been looking her way all night, but the demand I was dealt with almost knocked me off my seat."That bitch must have something to do with this," I thought, though not entirely sure, but it was the only reason I could work with.I summoned Katherine after the party was over and dealt with her like a viciou
King Kai’s POVMy eyes fluttered open to the rays that escaped the shields of the window blinds. My lips parted for the yawn I failed to suppress. I’ve had only little sleep; spent most of the night thinking of ways to curb the slave trade if enough evidence was found, and I also thought of Katherine. I laid in bed awake for a while till I deemed it time to get ready for the day. The bed squeaked as I sat up, I planted my face on my palms, then sent all ten fingers running through my hair.“Ah, shit!” I said as I finally found the courage to leave the bed. I walked straight to the window and raised the blinds, paving way for the rest of the rays to flood the room. Just outside the window was a head on a spike; eyes opened, tongue hanging out from its enclosure, and blood dripping down the pole from where the head had been decapitated. The chef had been executed at first light, and I wondered what his final moment was, not that I cared. My phone buzzed after some minutes of me standing
Kai's POVThe cold steel of the balcony railing bit into my palms as I absorbed the latest news. My mind was a turbulent sea of thoughts and decisions. Every one of my instincts screamed that we were on the brink of something catastrophic. The shadow hunter attack was a stark message, and I could not afford to underestimate the threat.“Azra,” I call out, my voice cutting through the tension of the hospital morning. We had barely slept until we were sure that Roma was in stable condition. He turned to me, his expression taut with concern. “I need you to secure the citadel immediately. No one in or out until further notice.”Azra’s eyes widened slightly, but he nodded without hesitation. “I’ve already taken the liberty of informing the guards. What else do you need, my king?”I took a deep breath, my weak attempt to quell the rising sense of urgency. “We need to find the warlock. If he’s under the shadow hunters' control, he’s a crucial part of their plan. His location could lead us to
Kai's POVThe hospital balcony was cold, the metal railing biting into my palms as I stared out into the night. I should be inside, with Katherine and Trisha, but my mind refused to settle. The weight of recent events presses heavily on my shoulders. My thoughts were a chaotic swirl of anger and frustration as I tried to piece together who was behind these attacks. I needed answers, but every lead seemed to turn into a dead end.The city lights below flickered like a constellation, indifferent to the turmoil in my heart. A gust of wind blew through, making me shiver. I pulled my coat tighter around myself, trying to ward off the chill that seemed to be more than just physical. As I grappled with my thoughts, I heard hurried footsteps approaching.Azra ran to the balcony, his face etched with tension. His usual calm demeanor was replaced with urgency, and it immediately set my nerves on edge. I turned to face him, keeping my face as neutral as possible. “What’s going on?” I asked; my
Roma's POVThe palace felt eerily silent, like the calm before a storm. My mind raced as I paced the room, glancing nervously at the door. Katherine was still at the hospital, and King Kai had asked us to return. I couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that clung to me like a second skin.Claire sat across from me, serene as ever, her fingers tracing patterns in the air. She always had this way about her, a kind of stillness that made it seem like nothing could ever shake her. But I was different. I wasn’t like Katherine or Claire, who were born with power, forged by destiny. It was just me. And right now, “me” felt helpless."Roma, relax." Claire’s voice broke through my anxious thoughts. She looked up from whatever spell or divination she was working on. "The safest place for us right now is here. In the palace."I frowned, biting my lip as I stared at her. "Are you sure? What if... what if the person hunting Katherine’s friends comes for us too?"Claire’s gaze softened, and she stood
Katherine’s POVThe sterile white light overhead blurred as I blink my eyes open. For a moment, everything seemed distant, like I was floating between worlds. The antiseptic scent of the hospital filled my lungs, pulling me back into reality. The beeping of the machines was steady, matching the rhythm of my breath.I turned my head slightly, and there he was, Kai, seated by my bedside, his elbows resting on his knees. His eyes were wide open, bloodshot, and heavy with exhaustion. It looked like he hadn’t slept at all, and I could feel the weight of his worry pressing down on me, even in silence.I tried to sit up, but my muscles screamed in protest. Kai noticed instantly, springing to my side before I could adjust the pillow beneath me. His face softened with relief as he leaned down, his voice hoarse from what must’ve been a sleepless night.“Katherine,” he whispered, brushing a stray lock of hair from my forehead. “How are you feeling?”I opened my mouth to respond, but the words wo
Kai's POVThe hospital hallway felt like it was closing in around me, each second stretched by the uncertainty of what lay behind those doors. I pushed through the waiting room, not caring that I'd been told to stay put. Katherine was in there, and that's all that mattered. "His royal Majesty, wait!" one of the nurses tried to stop me, but I brushed past her, the need to see Katherine overpowering everything. The doctor stepped in my way just as I reached her room. "Your Highness, you need to calm down," he said, his voice steady but strained. "She's stable, but you can't go in just yet. She fainted, and we're trying to""Trying to stabilize her? She fainted?" I repeated, my voice incredulous. "That's not enough. I need to see her." My pulse pounded in my ears. Katherine never fainted. She was strong—too strong for something like this. The doctor's eyes flickered with nervousness. "We're running tests, but it looks like she's just stressed. Shock, perhaps, but she's out of danger."I
Kai's POV I missed Katherine already; she had gone to see Elera today so they could talk about everything. I sent some of my guards to secretly watch over her because I knew that if she knew, she would refuse it. A knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts. It was Azra. “Enter,” I called, already knowing that whatever news he brought wouldn’t be easy to swallow. Azra had taken Claire to see Elera after Dexter’s murder. He’d been gone for most of yesterday, and now, as he stepped into the room, his face was as grim as I expected.“Your Highness,” he said, bowing slightly before taking the seat across from me.“What did you find?” I asked, my voice steady, though I braced myself for the worst.Azra sighed, running a hand through his dark hair before meeting my eyes. “It’s complicated, Kai. When we arrived at the pack clinic, Claire immediately sensed something... off about Elera’s wolf.”I tensed. “Off, how?”“She said Elera’s wolf was troubled, restless, but pure. Her relationshi
Katherine POV. Elera was waiting inside, and I knew the confrontation that awaited would be anything but easy. My fingers clenched at my sides, my nails digging into my palms. I had faced down terrible people like Alpha Jackson, but nothing had ever made my stomach twist in knots the way this did. With a deep breath, I pushed open the heavy wooden door. The air inside the prison was thick and stale, laced with the faint stench of old blood and fear. My footsteps echoed down the narrow stone corridor, the guards at either side barely sparing me a glance. They knew who I was, and none of them were foolish enough to cross me. But today, it wasn’t their judgment I feared; it was Elera's.Elera was kept in the farthest cell, isolated from the rest of the prisoners. She was dangerous and unstable after everything that had happened, and I couldn’t blame her for that. Not after Dexter. Not after what she had done. The cell door came into view, and I felt my heart lurch. I hadn’t seen her sin
Claire's POV The night was unnervingly still. I could feel it. It was darkness creeping closer, something greater than any predator we’d ever faced. My instincts told me it was more than a hunt for Katherine. It was a hunt for power, for something that could rip the world apart if it found the right hands. Or the wrong ones.I was still staring out at the horizon, trying to pick apart the shadows for answers, when I heard the door creak open behind me. The footsteps were familiar, even before I turned around.“Kai,” I said, not bothering to look at him.“We have a problem,” he said, his voice tight.I finally turned to face him. Kai’s face was lined with tension, and his jaw set in that grim way that told me whatever news he brought was worse than usual. I raised an eyebrow, waiting.“The shadow hunters,” he continued, “they’re moving into the lower cities. Faster than they have ever done.”My heart skipped. I had been dreading this. The shadow hunters were ruthless, a merciless band
Elera's POVI had been loyal to King Kai for years, through wars, betrayals, and the rise and fall of alliances. And now, this? A prison cell? The iron bars seemed to mock me, a reminder of how easily trust could be shattered. I had given everything to Kai. Every decision, every sacrifice, was made in his name. And now, here I was, a prisoner in the very kingdom I had helped to protect. My breaths came in shallow, angry bursts as I tried to make sense of it all.I didn’t hear the door creak open until it was too late to compose myself. Azra stepped into the dim light, his expression unreadable. The sight of him only fueled my anger further. He was the one who had brought me here.“What is the meaning of this?” I demanded, my voice echoing off the cold walls. “What the hell is going on, Azra? Why am I in jail? What crime have I committed?”Azra raised his hands in a placating gesture, his usual calm demeanor doing little to soothe the rage burning inside me. “Elera, you need to relax.
