Katherine's POV
I looked back and forth between both Alpha Jackson and the Lycan King. Not only was I in disbelief of who I just met but also of what I felt for the Lycan King when our fingers brushed.
Lowering my gaze slightly, I moved away from the door to allow Alpha Jackson to walk in. I could feel his hot gaze on my face as he did and as soon as he walked down the stairs leading into the wine cellar, I walked out and closed the door behind me.
It was punishable by death to wait behind and eavesdrop on their conversation unless called upon.
With as little as five wine bottles in my basket, I returned to the feast. The chef gave me a hard glare as I placed all five bottles on the table.
"That's all you could bring, you useless wimp," he said through gritted teeth.
"I'm sorry," I bowed, apologising. He was the chef, which means he had the authority to kill me or punish me for my foolishness. He was also Jackson's favourite. That gave him the leverage to act in his capacity in the pack. All the slaves hated him but there was nothing we could do.
I returned to my spot, right beside Roma. She grabbed my pinky finger, making me turn to her.
"What happened?" She asked in a whisper. I raised an eyebrow. How did she know something happened?
"What?"
"You're as red as a tomato,"
My eyes went wide. Did Alpha Jackson also see me like this?
"Nothing important. I only ran into Alpha Jackson,"
She suddenly grabbed my hand, making me scrowl.
"Did he try anything?"
I shook my head. Roma was the only one in the pack who knew my secret. Maybe I told her because she was my friend or because she would understand my predicament but I knew I told her when I needed someone to confide in.
The festival continued when Alpha Jackson returned to the hall with the Lycan King. An eerie silence descended on the hall in the presence of the Lycan King.
His aura was dominating and powerful. I only looked up for a few seconds to see them walk in.
Jackson started a long speech, emphasizing on the friendship between both of them and how they've come a long way.
They were friends. I'm sure Jackson already told the Lycan King about me. How he rejected me and how I was nothing but a tool to me. I wouldn't expect any less from his friends as well.
If he wants to reject me, so be it.
"We're honoured to be in your presence today, Lycan King. I hope you have a wonderful evening," Jackson ended his speech.
Kai? That was his name. Is it a short form of a longer name? Or is it just Kai?
I pinched myself, coming back to my senses. Why was I curious about him? He wouldn't accept a degraded sex slave like me.
A whole Lycan King.
Unknowingly, I scoffed.
"You!" Someone commanded. We all looked up at the chef who was pointing at me.
"Pour some wine for the Lycan King,"
I swallowed hard. My lips trembled. Hot breath bursted in and out of me.
I'd never been given such a delicate yet hard task before. All I knew was to wash dishes and carry plates. I didn't even know how to open wine bottles, not to talk of pouring one.
"Get you stupid ass over here," he demanded and I flinched. A loose hiccup escaping my throat.
The loud music in the room made others oblivious of what was happening and for once since I got to this bloody pack, I was grateful they wouldn't witness my shame.
I moved closer to him. "I don't know how to…"
The words had barely left my lips when a resounding sound echoed, a sharp pain resonated on my right cheek.
My hand flew to grab hold of my cheek as tears threatened to come down my face.
"Useless pig," he mumbled under his breath and called over to the next person. When the boy opened it wrongly, he kicked him where the sun doesn't shine and instructed the guards to drag him out.
I returned to my spot and Roma secretly held my hand. My eyes went across the room and landed on the deep blue eyes staring at me.
I quickly looked away before I was caught staring.
At a second thought, I looked up again and I saw the Lycan King still staring.
His eyes were cold, hard and flinty. His jaws were tightened and his palm was curled in a fist on the table. I had to look away again.
The party went on for what seemed like years but in reality was only a few hours. I wanted nothing more but to leave that place. I was done getting cakes, bread, wine and food thrown at us by other members of the pack.
I was hungry too.
As the party manoeuvred into the night, the music decreased, the screaming and yelling went down, the dances also stopped as most men were drunk while the rest were busy fondling the women with them.
"They should retire for the night soon," Roma insisted.
She's usually the one who gave me insights about the pack since she'd stayed longer than I did.
"Good,"
Jackson stood up to give another long, boring closing speech for the party before leaving and at the end, he asked Kai to take anything he wanted as he was being generous.
The Lycan King smirked, then raised a finger at us.
"Shit! Shit!" Roma held my hand tighter as she muttered underneath her breath. I could only curse as well because I knew he was an animal as worst as his friend, Alpha Jackson.
He probably wanted one of us for the night.
His finger suddenly moved away from us and stopped at the chef.
Jackson frowned. "I didn't know you swung that way, your highness. You want my chef,"
Kai interrupted before Jackson could say anything to the chef. "I want his head,"
Another deadly silence came over the room. His demand was so powerful it cleared off the drunkenness even from the most drunk man in the room.
My eyes went wide at his demand. Murmuring soon replaced the silence.
"What?" Jackson asked in disbelief.
He stood up, placed a hand on Jackson's shoulder.
"His head on a pyre by morning. That's my only demand,"
Katherine's POVTill Kai, the Lycan King left the hall, the silence could be heard. A pin dropping to the floor would be the loudest and deafening sound in the room. Kai held my gaze till he walked out. When I turned my head to Jackson, he had a murderous look on his face. Roma turned to me in panic and that made me stare up at the chef. I had never seen him that scared. He usually had a high shoulder and confidence when moving around the pack house but at that moment, he looked crumbled and defeated. "Let's leave," Roma asked. I nodded and quickly followed the others out of the hall through the back door. Soon, we heard a loud growl from the room. The sounds of plate, tables being thrown against the wall could be heard. It was scary but the scariest thing was the smile that was on the faces of every servant and slave standing in the backyard. Most of them were satisfied about what happened but to me, I was more worried about the outcome. We definitely will be at the receiving end
Katherine's POV The walk from where I saw Roma to the Alpha's quarters was dreadful. Each step I took scared me. I felt as though I was walking into a trap of death. I could turn back and run but that wasn't an option. "You don't have to go if you don't want to, Katherine," Roma suggested.I turned to her. "I can't run," "Why?" She asked with a single eyebrow lifted. "Because it's not even an option," She cursed underneath her breath and held my palm. "Remember the last time he was this angry,"Tears threatened to leak out of my eyes as I nodded, bringing back the horrible memory. He tied me up in his room, beat me repeatedly and did unspeakable things to me. When he finally released me, I couldn't get out of bed for days. I was brutally treated like an animal. "Don't go, please. He already promised to kill five of us if the chef's head ended up on the pyre tomorrow. I'm scared for your life," I nodded. I am scared for my life too. But I don't have a choice. I have nobody. I'm
King Kai’s POVI sat at my desk, surrounded by stacks of documents and maps, my mind focused on the kingdom's trade and commerce. The knock on the door broke my concentration, and I looked up, slightly annoyed. "Enter," I called out, not looking up from the documents. The door creaked open, and a guard stepped inside, his eyes fixated on me. "Your Majesty, I bring a message from Alpha Jackson Connelly’s pack." He approached me, holding out a letter, his hand trembling slightly.I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. What could Alpha Jackson Connelly want with me? We had never been allies, though we have never gotten into war to cause enmity within us. "Let me see it," I said, taking the letter from the guard. As I read the invitation to Alpha Jackson Connelly’s party, I scoffed. A party? What a waste of time. I had more pressing matters to attend to, like ensuring the kingdom's prosperity and security. But then, a thought struck me. Rumours had been circulating about the rapid growth of slav
King Kai’s POVI was busy trading punches with Alpha Jackson but my attention was directed towards Katherine. I saw Roma trying futilely to bring her to her feet and knew I had to end the fight quickly. I tightened my fist and sent a punch into Jackson’s face, he got disbalanced and I followed up with an uppercut. A clean hit to his lower jaw sent him crashing to the ground, leaving me with enough time to tend to Katherine. I rushed towards her, my heart raced with a mix of urgency and concern. held her in my hands and saw she was slipping into unconsciousness.“Stay the fuck with me, Katherine,” I murmured. She didn’t; she took my plea for her to stay awake as a cue to plunge into unconsciousness. “Fuck!” I yelled. I scooped her up and hurried out of the room.“Hang in there Katherine, I’ve got you,” I whispered, trying to comfort her, or trying to comfort myself because my head was going into a spiral.I got her into the backseats of my vehicle and sped off to the pack’s clinic. The
Alpha Jackson's POVThe party I threw was meant to please Kai, the Lycan King, but I could see past the pretence that he was not entertained. He was definitely into something else, someone else; he was into Katherine, or so I thought. I watched and followed the direction of his eyes, and they led to Katherine most of the time. I thought of the time I caught up with him in the wine cellar and concluded he must have had an encounter with her."This is interesting," I thought. "If the party would not please him, perhaps she would".I stood up to give a closing speech and offered to grant one demand in honour of the Lycan King. It was a simple plan to make him pick Katherine since he had been looking her way all night, but the demand I was dealt with almost knocked me off my seat."That bitch must have something to do with this," I thought, though not entirely sure, but it was the only reason I could work with.I summoned Katherine after the party was over and dealt with her like a viciou
King Kai’s POVMy eyes fluttered open to the rays that escaped the shields of the window blinds. My lips parted for the yawn I failed to suppress. I’ve had only little sleep; spent most of the night thinking of ways to curb the slave trade if enough evidence was found, and I also thought of Katherine. I laid in bed awake for a while till I deemed it time to get ready for the day. The bed squeaked as I sat up, I planted my face on my palms, then sent all ten fingers running through my hair.“Ah, shit!” I said as I finally found the courage to leave the bed. I walked straight to the window and raised the blinds, paving way for the rest of the rays to flood the room. Just outside the window was a head on a spike; eyes opened, tongue hanging out from its enclosure, and blood dripping down the pole from where the head had been decapitated. The chef had been executed at first light, and I wondered what his final moment was, not that I cared. My phone buzzed after some minutes of me standing
King Kai's POVThe moon was still at its peak and howls could still be heard from a distance. I turned to see Katherine already up from bed. I told her to stay the rest of the night but she refused. She said our little love session was a mistake and proposed we pretended nothing ever happened. Her request could have easily been granted if she was just a regular she-wolf. But she wasn't, she was my mate and she knew that."You cannot deny the bond we have," I blurted."I also can't deny I'm Jackson's mate," she replied."And does he treat you as such?" I questioned."It doesn't matter. This night was a mistake and there won't be another," she said, and made way to the exit of the room.I watched her leave without being able to make a sound. I wondered how powerful an Omega could put a Lycan King in this state. I chuckled at my thought and went straight to sleep; the distant howls acted as a lullaby.***Azra appeared the next day with a lead. I was busy with my early morning push-ups,
King Kai's POVAzra stood before me with his eyes glued to the floor in disappointment. He had just admitted that his intuition regarding the connection between Alpha Jackson and the trade market was indeed wrong. He confirmed that, although the spot held name 'slave market', slave trade had been repealed long ago under the law set by the kingdom's new alpha. I poured myself a glass of wine and emptied the content in one large gulp."Seems it was only a rumour after all," I said, and proceeded to pour myself another drink. Azra waited patiently for my permission to leave, but I still had a use for him. The investigation had been completed, and my stay at the Alpha Quarters was coming to an end. All I could think of were ways to convince Katherine into following me back home."I need you to deliver an anonymous message," I said to Azra, before dismissing him.Noon came fast, and the sun was sure to make its anger known to everyone and everything. The heat was almost unbearable and obje
Katherine’s POVThe sun hung low in the sky, casting a pale golden light over the training grounds. The last day of my training, and I still hadn’t seen Kai. It had been three days since I last heard from him, three long, agonizing days of silence. Each moment without a word from him gnawed at me, a dull ache that deepened with every passing hour. Where was he? Why hadn’t he come? Even Tricia has been asking of him nonstop, Roma had just been moved down to where we were and she has been the one taking care of Tricia on my behalf. I should’ve been focused on my training, but my thoughts constantly wandered back to Kai. The connection we shared, once so clear, felt distant now. I knew he had his reasons, and his responsibilities, but it didn’t make his absence any easier to bear. Every attempt to channel my inner light, my supposed gift as the Light Seeker, was met with resistance. The power inside me felt muddled, out of reach, like trying to catch water slipping through my fingers.
Kai's POVThe forest surrounding Alpha Jackson’s hideout was eerily quiet as if even the wind was holding its breath. I moved silently, the soft crunch of leaves beneath my boots the only sound. No guards, no patrols, nothing that suggested Jackson was even concerned about being found here. Bold. Or foolish. But Jackson had always been both. It was how we had become acquainted in the first place. I reached the clearing, and there it was: the old stone cottage that Azra had described, hidden deep within my kingdom’s borders. A fitting place for someone trying to hide in plain sight. I couldn’t help but smirk at the audacity of him, slipping into my kingdom without so much as a word of notice. But I wasn’t surprised. As I approached the entrance, the door swung open, and there he stood. Alpha Jackson. He looked the same, nothing had changed about him. “King Kai,” he greeted, his voice smooth and dripping with false humility. “What a pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect a visit from the
Kai's POVThings were beginning to calm down in the low towns, but, even, I could not let the worry go. I knew that the problem was not close to being over yet. I knew that much of the peace was because I had hidden Katherine away. Keeping her out of sight, away from those who might want to use her or, worse, destroy her. She was training privately with Claire, learning how to control her power as the Light Seeker, and it seemed to be working. But how long could I keep her hidden? How long before the world found out who she truly was?The thought weighed heavy on my chest as I made my way to the secluded house where Katherine was training. A part of me wanted to tell her everything, to be fully honest about the dangers swirling around us, but I knew I couldn’t. Not yet. She had enough on her plate without the burden of my fears. The air was crisp as I approached the safe house, the setting sun casting long shadows across the stone path. As I entered, I could feel the soft hum of Kat
"The light is already inside you, Katherine. You just need to let it out." Claire said as a light began to illuminate my chest and formed a circle, shining steadily with its rays shining in the room. My training with Claire had begun privately a few weeks ago. I have been putting my all into learning how to channel my light. I closed my eyes and willed my heart to beat slower as if to slow time. My purpose, My title is the Light Seeker. It had not been easy at first, but here I was doing it. Taking it one day at a time. I was beginning to feel the warmth as it spread through me. And the truth was that I had not felt so good about myself in years. Not until I discovered that. The room around me brightened, the shadows in the corners retreating as the light from within me spread across the space. I felt the same deep within me as everything started to gain clarity.Claire stepped back, a satisfied smile curling on her lips. “You’re getting the hang of it, Katherine. I knew you had it
Kai's POVThe cold steel of the balcony railing bit into my palms as I absorbed the latest news. My mind was a turbulent sea of thoughts and decisions. Every one of my instincts screamed that we were on the brink of something catastrophic. The shadow hunter attack was a stark message, and I could not afford to underestimate the threat.“Azra,” I call out, my voice cutting through the tension of the hospital morning. We had barely slept until we were sure that Roma was in stable condition. He turned to me, his expression taut with concern. “I need you to secure the citadel immediately. No one in or out until further notice.”Azra’s eyes widened slightly, but he nodded without hesitation. “I’ve already taken the liberty of informing the guards. What else do you need, my king?”I took a deep breath, my weak attempt to quell the rising sense of urgency. “We need to find the warlock. If he’s under the shadow hunters' control, he’s a crucial part of their plan. His location could lead us to
Kai's POVThe hospital balcony was usually not the place I would imagine that I was going to be tonight. The events of the last few weeks burdened my mind so heavily that I felt like there was no way out of it. But I could not afford to think like that. I wrapped my clothes tightly around myself as the cold wind blew, even at that, I could feel the heat emanating from my body. Katherine could have been seriously hurt and each day, this crazy person came close to the woman that I loved the most. The thought of what would have happened if anything had gone wrong at the prison was not something that I enjoyed thinking about so I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath to steady my head. Azra ran to the balcony, his face etched with tension. His usual calm demeanor was replaced with urgency, and it immediately set my nerves on edge. I turned to face him, keeping my face as neutral as possible. “What’s going on?” I asked; my voice was sharp and hard. “Why are you here?” I demanded. Hi
Roma's POVThe palace felt eerily silent, like the calm before a storm. My mind raced as I paced the room, glancing nervously at the door. Katherine was still at the hospital, and King Kai had asked us to return. I couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that clung to me like a second skin.Claire sat across from me, serene as ever, her fingers tracing patterns in the air. She always had this way about her, a kind of stillness that made it seem like nothing could ever shake her. But I was different. I wasn’t like Katherine or Claire, who were born with power, forged by destiny. It was just me. And right now, “me” felt helpless."Roma, relax." Claire’s voice broke through my anxious thoughts. She looked up from whatever spell or divination she was working on. "The safest place for us right now is here. In the palace."I frowned, biting my lip as I stared at her. "Are you sure? What if... what if the person hunting Katherine’s friends comes for us too?"Claire came to the window, where I sto
Katherine’s POVThe sterile white light overhead blurred as I blinked my eyes open. I struggled with the blinding lights in the room and I struggled to adjust my sight to it. I opened my eyes slowly and turned my head. Kai was seated with his elbows resting on his knees. His eyes were red and the exhaustion was quite visible. Considering the eyebags under his eyes, it looked like he hadn’t slept at all, and I could feel the weight of his worry pressing down on me, even in silence.I groaned in pain as I tried my best to sit up, but my muscles screamed in protest. Kai noticed instantly, springing to my side before I could adjust the pillow beneath me. His face softened with relief as he leaned down, his voice hoarse from what must’ve been a sleepless night.“my love, how are you feeling?" He asked me.I tried to respond, but the words wouldn’t come. I glanced to the side and saw Tricia, curled up on one of the clinic's chairs. She was asleep, snoring slightly as her chest moved up and
Kai's POVThe hospital hallway felt like it was closing in around me, each second stretched by the uncertainty of what lay behind those doors. I pushed through the waiting room, not caring that I'd been told to stay put. Katherine was in there, and that's all that mattered. "His royal Majesty, wait!" one of the nurses tried to stop me, but I brushed past her, the need to see Katherine overpowering everything. The doctor stepped in my way just as I reached her room. "Your Highness, you need to calm down," he said, his voice steady but strained. "She's stable, but you can't go in just yet. She fainted, and we're trying to""Trying to stabilize her? She fainted?" I repeated, my voice incredulous. "That's not enough. I need to see her." My pulse pounded in my ears. Katherine never fainted. She was strong—too strong for something like this. The doctor's eyes flickered with nervousness. "We're running tests, but it looks like she's just stressed. Shock, perhaps, but she's out of danger."I
