Dad’s face turns rigid. “First he asks everyone to break allegiance with her, now this? How far is the King intending to take it? Makes me think he has a problem with my daughter specifically.” He spits, his eyes sharply challenging Cyrus.

Cyrus raises his hands defensively. “I’m just a messenger. In fact, I requested the king to give Verena an option. Otherwise, he was planning to imprison her. “But Rena isn’t just the—” I hold Dad’s hand, and he looks at me.
