Augustin was comfortably seated in the thick armchair of a VIP room that had been specially prepared for him. He had asked to be left alone and wanted no company. And so he found himself in a room richly decorated with dark wood and sleekly designed furniture. A digital tablet and a series of newspapers covering current events in the paranormal world had been lent to him.

"It's incredible," the healer murmured in wonder over the shoulder of a young redheaded woman. "Get out of the way," came the voice of the uniformed nurse. She was eagerly jotting down data on a notepad and getting annoyed at the commotion the healer was causing. "Can't you see how quickly Alpha Harry is recovering?" the healer murmured. The nurse stopped writing and turned her head in the direction of the man who was constantly disrupting her work. "What I see, Jason, is that he is still in a coma, and his vitals need to be followed scrupulously if I don't want my Alpha, Alpha Black, to rip my head off." Jason didn't have time to reply as she had already thrust her pen under the healer's collarbone to make him back off. "You are a wolf with healing powers... I am a nurse with medical knowledge and especially experience in wolfsbane poisoning and silver. All that to say, do not talk to me when I need to concentrate." Jason was now completely unable to breathe. He had found himself lying on his stomach, his fingernails scratching the tiles as if trying to cling to life. "Good morning to you, too," said Augustin, unable to mask the amusement in his voice. However, he had to grit his teeth when he felt the barrel pressed further against his skull. "I would like to ask you to remove this object from my skull so that we can proceed to a verbal exchange as any normally constituted and civilized person would." Augustin, whose eyes had begun to cloud over with a dark film, had almost felt relief when the person had removed the barrel from his head. "Finally, a reasonable person," he couldn't help thinking. Then he gently raised his hands in the air, showing his good faith, and resumed an immobile posture. "May I turn around now, or would you prefer it if we talked like this?" the vampire asked. "So here is my identity revealed," the vampire replied graciously. However, the old man's hostile attitude remained unchanged. And yet, François had been delighted to go hunting this morning. For once in a long time, the Order of Hunters had not received any alerts, and he thought he'd be able to bring home some game for dinner. The world of the supernatural seemed to have taken a vacation and also seemed to have decided to leave humans alone. François, though no longer head of the branch of the Order deployed in this part of France, remained vigilant and alert to the slightest suspicious movement. When he realized that his old bones would no longer allow him to lead the fight against the forces of evil, he decided of his own accord to put an end to his high office. During a mission, he had been poisoned by a thousand-year-old dryad, and every day since, he had felt his blood harden a little more like sap drying up on the trunk of a tree that had just been bled dry. Augustin finally arrived at the wood. He closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. He took off his coat, folded it, and let it hang over his arm.
