   Episode 2: The beginning of the end (ii)

  Mrs Rivera POV

  My husband and I are presently in the living room , talking about random things.

  Suddenly, we heard Kevin's cry upstairs ,the cry was ear splitting and at the same time scary.

  "What's happening? " I asked frightened.

 "I don't really know, Kevin doesn't cry at the middle of the night" Mr Rivera replied clogging his ears with his thumbs.

  " Perhaps , he needs milk" I said as i went upstairs.

  As I was going upstairs , I smelt something burning . I traced the smell and looked at the window , I walked towards it and sniffed , I gasped as I saw smoke covering the edges of the window . I looked down and saw fire burning furious at the root of the house

  I ran downstairs forgetting to get Kevin and saw my husband coughing as smoke was emitting into the living room.

  I dragged my husband and placed him in a safe place .

 "Hunny, you go and get Kevin and I'll get Dove " I spoke sharply and didn't bother to wait for his response.

  I ran and barged into Dove's room and it made her startle a little.

  "Dove , wake up " I said as I looked around if there was smoke and luckily there wasn't , all thanks to the closed windows in her bedroom.

  Dove woke up and said

  "Mom I'm awake, what happened?" she asked , noticing the sweats on my hands and face.

  I didn't have time to answer and dragged her out of her room but she pulled my hands indicating me to stop .

  " Mom, what is going on? why's there smoke? and where's Dad and Kevin?" she asked confused.

  "My dear , the house is on fire" I said tearily and dragged her out of the house.

   A part of the house fell and I remembered my husband and Kevin.

  " My baby , I would come for you " I said and she started sobbing.

  "Don't cry , I promise I will come for you". I said .

  " Run!!!" I yelled tearfully and she ran as much as her little legs could carry her 

  I ran upstairs to save my husband and Kevin without caring about the dangers.

  Dove's POV

  I ran and ran till I was out of breath and I couldn't find my Mom ,Dad and Kevin.

  I turned back and ran to the path I took , I could still see my house from afar. I continued running and stopped but I was still far . I could see the door of the house opened .

  The fire raised furiously and my heart began to beat faster ,what should I do?

  I wanted to go call the neighbors for help but it was too late. I heard a gun shot and the whole house blasted into flames and crashed in front of my very own eyes. 

The bushes around the house also caught fire. 

 "NO!!!!!!!!!" I screamed my lungs out.

  The force of the wind threw me off guard and I landed on the ground.

  I stood up in a swift and looked around to see my family but they didn't come. Then it dawned on me 

  " Mom!!! , No!! no!!" I shook my head ,not believing it.

  I ran down the same path, thinking that they must have passed this way. I kept running and running until I stumbled upon a rock.

 I fell and groaned , I strained my ankle .

 I stood up limping and falling at the same time.

  I felt tired and laid my back on a tree behind me, I cried noticing that none of my family members were here.

  With the look of things , it is not an ordinary fire , it must be an attack!

  I heard footsteps and voices behind me .

  "Let call him to send our remaining balance" a deep and croaking voice said .

  "Wait man , let me call him" the other voice said.

  "Put it on speaker" the deep voice said .

  "Hello" 

   "Hey"

  "Did you do the job ?"

  " Yeah , we did"

  "Are you sure?".   

 "As we are speaking ,the house is bombed and burned" One of them said and they both laughed.

  I gasped and clamped my mouth when it dawned on me that they are talking about my house.

  "That's good , How much is your remaining balance"

  " Our balance is 40 million"

 "Ok , 40 mill.... 40 what?!"

  "Sir , your ears has been working since, we said Forty million dollars" The man said brusquely.

  "I thought I gave you twenty million and our agreed balance was two million , why Forty million dollars"

  " We are talking about the lives of human beings , not chickens , okay?" 

  "But.."

 "No buts ,Mr Rogers or else I'll tell the whole world what you sent us for "

 "No, don't do it that , I'll send the money to you"

  "Good , hope you told Mr Leonardo"

  "He knows, he's right here listening" 

  The call was cut.

The phone was on speaker and I heard everything.

  I stood and began to limp but I fell and let out a whine .

I clamped my mouth with my palm.

 " Did you hear that?" The deep voice said.

  "Yeah, Who's there?!" the voice thundered .

  I hastily stood up and began to run without caring about the pain in my ankles.

  "who is there?! , show yourself!"

  I ran into the dangerous part of the bush filled with itch grasses, insects and thorns l that gave me scars on both my arms and part of my body.

 "Mr Rogers ..."

  "Mr Leonardo..."

   

  The name rang my head as I ran .

  I looked back while running and didn't took notice of the danger ahead of me.

  I missed a step and rolled on the hill .

 I screamed in pains and my body landed on heaps of gravel stones.

  I hastily stood up and began running , I stumbled on a rock and fell into the river .

  I was struggling and struggling , I couldn't swim . I felt cold and weak then darkness hit me.

  15 LONG YEARS LATER

 Dierdre's POV

  "Ever since then, my whole life changed" I said . It was as if the waves of the sea felt my sorrow. It became still. I closed my eyes and dived into the silence.

 "My God! I'm so sorry , so all this happened to you?" she asked shocked.

I sniffed and opened my eyes. 

"My mind , my soul, my heart are all stone. Tears, pain and sorrow are my other names. I'm no longer Dove. I'm Dierdre. My life and all I'm gonna do after my 19th birthday will be for my parents and baby brother. I'm avenging their deaths" 

"You?.. all by yourself?. Don't you think it's dangerous?" She asked concerned.

I turned to face her with a cold look.

"Gladys, if you step on an egg, what happens?" I asked.

"It breaks?" she replied in a question.

"When it breaks is there anyway you can glue it back together?" I asked and she nodded negatively.

"Well that egg represents my family,my hope, my happiness.... and every other precious thing to me" I said harshly.

I stood up and stared directly at the ocean.

"When they killed my family... they invoked a deadly wrath upon themselves and that's something much bigger than ordinary trouble"

"Death!!"
