Fear  Noun 1. a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid. Synonyms: foreboding, apprehension, consternation, dismay, dread, terror, fright, panic, horror, trepidation, qualm. Until that night, Kinsley never knew true fear, never felt terror. She could taste the fear on her tongue, salty with a hint of copper, her throat felt constricted. She wanted to scream but the terror was too thick in her throat, coating it to the point of near suffocation. She was prey and he was the hunter who never failed. Verendus was powerful, a ruthless and cruel Boss, he did not fail and he did not quit. Kinsley Anderson was a woman he coveted, and he would stop at nothing to claim her. He had the means and the manpower to pursue her to the ends of the earth and he would do it, claiming her once and for all.

Prologue

The fog was thick around her feet, the headstones shrouded in mists. The night was cool and glowed with an eerie light from the full moon. Her heartbeat raced in fear as she ran, dodging headstones as she went. She could hear the snarls of her pursuer behind her, driving her to run faster. Her long heavy dress was a hindrance in her sprint, her mask slipping and obscuring her view. Stumbling around headstones she yelped in fear more than pain as she felt a snap of jaws narrowly missing her ankle. With the adrenaline running through her veins, she forced herself to run as fast as her tired legs could carry her. Panic set in as her foot caught on a sunken headstone, causing her to fall and land heavily on her outstretched arms. Moving through the pain she wiggled till she was on her back, crawling backwards for all she was worth. She shrieked in fear as the animal's jaws clamped on the thick heavy fabric of...

Chapter One
The music was loud and pumping through the speakers. I watched as she moved her body to the beat, responding in perfect harmony. The mass of bodies swayed in sync with the music. The ones gathered in the sensual dance were lost to the tether of time. She moved through the people with an unnatural grace as she made her way outside. I followed her out of the club, melting into the shadows, the moment the cool damp air met her lungs, she looked shocked to see they had all partied well into the night. The music from the club could still be heard from the alley, the bass pumping in time to my heartbeat. From all my time spent watching her, I could tell she was never one for partying but she did love to dance, to lose herself to the beat of the music and move her body to the rhythm. I watched her take deep breaths of the cool night air, trying to calm her racing heart. Her jeans and tank top clung to her body,

Chapter Two
The annoying ticking of the clock was amplified to the point that Kinsley felt it was assaulting the inside of her skull. She stared at the offending timepiece on her office wall and contemplated how much effort it would take to chuck her resin pyramid paperweight at it to silence it once and for all. Deciding it would be too much effort and too much noise, she got up with a huff and made the short walk to the coffee bar in the open office. She poured herself a cup of the liquid gold into her favourite and cooky-looking mug, something that was straight out of Alice in Wonderland's tea party and added her creamer and sugar before taking a slow sip, savouring its warmth and the little jolt of happiness it gave her. The slamming of the back door and the loud resounding swear made her jolt and slop a bit on her blouse, sighing as it burned her skin slightly. She thanked her lucky stars she had the good sense t

Chapter Three
The building that housed the Anderson Agency for Preternatural Investigations was old and stone, a very sturdy building, more akin to a stone warehouse than your average building. It was old but it was a fortress. The entire thing was spelled and shielded by various forms of magic and it has stood the test of time besides a few cosmetic issues. The hardwood floors were warped with age and use and creaked with every step, it smelt like an old library and the stained glass windows with solid iron inlaid bars were a thing of timeless beauty. The glass itself was spelled and the inlaid iron was coated in salt. No manner of creature could penetrate its protections. Even the doors were iron, and yes harmful to Fae, but this iron had been forged with Anderson blood, at best it only mildly stung the Andersons when they touched it, like a small static shock. The windows on both floors were tall and arched, taking u

Chapter Four
“Liam I need you to go downstairs, back shelf, third one down, the yellow glass jar sealed with black wax and a honeycomb label, I need you to bring it to me, with white and black candles. My athame and my pestle and mortar as well. Now.” Weaver snapped as they took Sawyer’s belt off once more and cinched it around his upper arm, swearing as the black veins had spread up to his neck and close to his heart. They ripped Sawyer's shirt off completely and gestured to Kinsley to come closer.“You have some healing abilities. I need you to send a pulse through his arms and tell me what it’s attacking in a medical way. I will send a pulse and look at what the magic is going after.” Kinsley nodded and focused on her brother, putting both of her hands out and letting her magic build before letting the light blue light flow over his wounds, her eyes closed as she focused. At the s

Chapter Five
Kinsley stood in the library, muttering over a few books and frowning as she read a few sentences of one and looked again at a different text, a frustrated huff leaving her as she took her long hair out of her ponytail and angrily ran her fingers through her hair, grunting as her fingers snagged on some tangles. She paced in front of the long table, muttering under her breath as she re-tied her hair securely on the top of her head before resting her hands on her hips as she paced. “Gods, this makes no sense. I can’t find the damn thing in any of these texts. That should not be possible.” she swore angrily under her breath and flopped into the chair with a defeated sigh. “What’s the use of having the best reference library around when you can’t actually find what you're looking for?!” “Whoa, what’s gotten you so pissed off?” A voice inquired from the steps lea

Chapter Six
Verendus stood and looked out the glass of his office window, the skyscraper providing the perfect view of the entire city laid before him. His building was the tallest in the city and he coveted his view, especially the vantage point it provided him. He knew every inch of this city, after all, he owned it, ran it from the shadows. The place he had dominion over. Nothing in this city happened that he didn’t know about. He was after all owner and creator of Blackthorne Security Solutions, the world's largest paramilitary organization.  The BSS provided all the security services, technology and equipment for the city. He provided the police department with equipment, weapons, body armour and everything else they needed through legitimate government contracts. Military contracts as well. The BSS was the most prosperous company of its kind. As the owner Verendus knew everything that happened within its w

Chapter Seven
Kinsley left work with her bag in tow and headed to the parking lot behind the building. It was later in the morning, almost noon and the day was bright and sunny, warm with a cool breeze. It was a beautiful day yet she felt as if something was brewing, something big. Perhaps it was just her insecurities with her brother, her worry and fear that he wouldn’t wake up. She got into her car and made the drive home, parking in front of her building before entering the building. Rather than use the front entrance and the main elevator she used the freight elevator and stepped into her unit on the top floor. “Honey I’m home.” she said in a sarcastic sing-song voice as she entered her empty apartment, snorting at what has become an odd habit of hers over the years. She dropped her bag on the table and walked across the large open space to the large sliding door that hid her bathroom from the open floor plan. She

Chapter Eight
After the meeting, Kinsley raced back to the office to see if Sawyer was awake so she could share the good news with him. She was excited about this chance and it would mean big things for the agency. Kinsley was always proud of the work The Anderson Agency of Preternatural Investigations did, but in a lot of cases, it was after a crime had already been committed by a preternatural entity. Things like kidnapping, murder, sometimes just assault or break-ins, but the damage was already done when the Agency got involved. So in partnering with Blackthorne Security Solutions the hope was that people would be a little safe, abductions, break-ins, and murders by a preternatural entity might not be so common. The agency had its fair share of ‘easy’ jobs as well.  Mediating disputes between the preternatural and the mundane, tracking down rogue shifters, especially those who have committed crimes against the

Chapter Nine
“So what did you discover in her apartment?” Verendus asked Stygian as they sat having a drink in his office, looking out over the city and all the lights in the dark sky. Stygian swirled his glass in his hand before drinking the amber liquid in one gulp as he regarded his long time friend. “Everything is set up perfectly, full surveillance like you asked for. Her magic is strong and it was in every inch of that place. I, unfortunately, couldn’t help but leave some of my magic behind. I left it in the form of a scent memory, it doesn't give anything away. It’ll just make her think of the Unseelie Court, make her curious more than anything.” He replied, watching Verendus closely as he frowned before rubbing his hand over his face and sighing. “I’d rather she not have discovered anything but if her magic is as strong as you say it is then perhaps it’s for the b
