The music was loud and pumping through the speakers. I watched as she moved her body to the beat, responding in perfect harmony. The mass of bodies swayed in sync with the music. The ones gathered in the sensual dance were lost to the tether of time. She moved through the people with an unnatural grace as she made her way outside. I followed her out of the club, melting into the shadows, the moment the cool damp air met her lungs, she looked shocked to see they had all partied well into the night. The music from the club could still be heard from the alley, the bass pumping in time to my heartbeat.

From all my time spent watching her, I could tell she was never one for partying but she did love to dance, to lose herself to the beat of the music and move her body to the rhythm. I watched her take deep breaths of the cool night air, trying to calm her racing heart. Her jeans and tank top clung to her body, her sweat-covered skin rising with goosebumps in the chilly night air. Running her hands through her long waves she shivered as she felt the weight of my eyes on her. Turning slowly she scanned the alley trying to find me. She turned in a full circle, coming face to face with her best friend, both letting out yelps of surprise.

“Jesus Christ Lydia you scared the crap out of me.” She spoke to her redheaded best friend, placing her small pale hand over her heart.

“Sorry, Kinsley. I was coming to look for you. You just disappeared while dancing so I got worried.” He redheaded friend said as she wrapped her small arms around her slim frame.

“Well, you looked a little occupied with that guy you were dancing with. I figured you could use some privacy.” Kinsley chuckled as she played with her wavy hair.

Her redheaded friend blushed lightly at the teasing tone. “He’s such a good dancer and he smells nice too.” She blushed, biting on her bottom lip.

“Did you even get his name?” Kinsley asked with a raised eyebrow.

“He said it was Zane. He has the most kissable pierced lips and beautiful green eyes.” She informed me with a sigh of want. I smirked from my place in the shadows, knowing full well who she spoke of. If he managed to make her that smitten he was doing his job well. “And those arms, guh. He can hold me forever.” She swooned, wrapping her arms around herself in a hug.

Kinsley snorted in amusement at her friend and lifted a perfectly arched eyebrow in question to her friend's attitude. “He’s just a guy Lydy. He’s nothing special.” She replied, lifting her thick heavy curls off the back of her neck.

“He’s not just a guy, Kins, he’s THE guy. At least I want him to be.” She said with a small pout causing me to smirk at her naivety and Kinsley to snort.

“Lydia, you've only known him for 10 minutes tops. He’s not Mr. Right, he’s just Mr. Right Now.” She smirked at her friend's shocked look.

“I’m not that kind of girl Kinsley, you know that.” She huffed.

“I’m not telling you to sleep with him, I’m just telling you to see how tonight goes. Don’t plan out your future just yet. For all, you know he could be some mob member following orders to get close to a pretty naive girl.” Kinsley said as she slung her arm around her friend’s small shoulders. I smirked and chuckled darkly at Kinsley’s comment because she was exactly right. Lydia was only target one, bait for reeling in target two, My beautiful Kinsley.

“He’s not like that, Kins. He’s too sweet.” Her friend pouted, turning her big hazel doe eyes on her friend.

Before Kinsley could comment, the back door of the club opened and Zane himself walked out the door. He smiled as he caught sight of both of the girls, his eyes glancing over the corner I was standing in and gave a barely susceptible nod in my direction. I smirked as the redhead friend smiled upon seeing him walk toward her.

“Hey, beautiful. I was looking for you, I got worried some guy snatched you away from me.” Zane said in a flirty tone as he wrapped both of his arms around her small waist and pulled her to him. She giggled and melted into his touch, her naivety making her too easy.

“Zane, this is my best friend Kinsley. Kinsley, this is Zane.” Lydia introduced them, keeping her hands on his chest. He smiled at Kinsley and held out a hand for her to shake. Hesitating for a second she shook his hand with a firm grip that surprised both Zane and I.

“Nice to meet you, Kinsley. I’m sorry for monopolizing all your friends' time, but I just can’t get enough of her.” He smiled, making his eyes sparkle down at the redhead. Kinsley narrowed her eyes slightly, not at all trusting him.

“Nice to meet you too Zane, but I’m afraid we have to leave. It’s late and we both have work in the morning. Come on Lydy.” Kinsley spoke in a clear voice that held no room for an argument. She stepped forward and grabbed her friend's arm and pulled her from his grip.

I watched as Zane’s eyes flashed with furry before fading back to a sparkly green. He flashed Kinsley a warm smile before kissing Lydia on the cheek, making her blush. “Till next time, beautiful.” He promised before stepping back and letting both girls walk past him.

As the girls turned and left the alley I stepped out of the shadows and made my way to Zane. He smirked as I came to stand beside him.

“She’s too easy, no challenge whatsoever. This will be a piece of cake.” He smirked cockily.

“She might be easy, but Kinsley is not. We will have a fight on our hands when it comes to her.” I smirked as I thought of the challenge she presented.

“We’re in for some fun than aren’t we Ren.” he smirked up at me, crossing his tattooed arms over his chest, his cold green eyes excited for the challenge.

“That we are Tenebrous, that we are.” I smirked in agreement before we both turned and melted back into the shadows. Kinsley Anderson was going to be a challenge, but I lived for challenges. She would break and I would be the one to break her.

The annoying ticking of the clock was amplified to the point that Kinsley felt it was assaulting the inside of her skull. She stared at the offending timepiece on her office wall and contemplated how much effort it would take to chuck her resin pyramid paperweight at it to silence it once and for all. Deciding it would be too much effort and too much noise, she got up with a huff and made the short walk to the coffee bar in the open office. She poured herself a cup of the liquid gold into her favourite and cooky-looking mug, something that was straight out of Alice in Wonderland's tea party and added her creamer and sugar before taking a slow sip, savouring its warmth and the little jolt of happiness it gave her. The slamming of the back door and the loud resounding swear made her jolt and slop a bit on her blouse, sighing as it burned her skin slightly. She thanked her lucky stars she had the good sense t

The building that housed the Anderson Agency for Preternatural Investigations was old and stone, a very sturdy building, more akin to a stone warehouse than your average building. It was old but it was a fortress. The entire thing was spelled and shielded by various forms of magic and it has stood the test of time besides a few cosmetic issues. The hardwood floors were warped with age and use and creaked with every step, it smelt like an old library and the stained glass windows with solid iron inlaid bars were a thing of timeless beauty. The glass itself was spelled and the inlaid iron was coated in salt. No manner of creature could penetrate its protections. Even the doors were iron, and yes harmful to Fae, but this iron had been forged with Anderson blood, at best it only mildly stung the Andersons when they touched it, like a small static shock. The windows on both floors were tall and arched, taking u

They ripped Sawyer's shirt off completely and gestured to Kinsley to come closer.“You have some healing abilities. I need you to send a pulse through his arms and tell me what it’s attacking in a medical way. I will send a pulse and look at what the magic is going after.” Kinsley nodded and focused on her brother, putting both of her hands out and letting her magic build before letting the light blue light flow over his wounds, her eyes closed as she focused. Kinsley stood in the library, muttering over a few books and frowning as she read a few sentences of one and looked again at a different text, a frustrated huff leaving her as she took her long hair out of her ponytail and angrily ran her fingers through her hair, grunting as her fingers snagged on some tangles. She paced in front of the long table, muttering under her breath as she re-tied her hair securely on the top of her head before resting her hands on her hips as she paced. “Gods, this makes no sense. I can’t find the damn thing in any of these texts. That should not be possible.” she swore angrily under her breath and flopped into the chair with a defeated sigh. “What’s the use of having the best reference library around when you can’t actually find what you're looking for?!” “Whoa, what’s gotten you so pissed off?” A voice inquired from the steps lea

Kinsley left work with her bag in tow and headed to the parking lot behind the building. It was later in the morning, almost noon and the day was bright and sunny, warm with a cool breeze. It was a beautiful day yet she felt as if something was brewing, something big. Perhaps it was just her insecurities with her brother, her worry and fear that he wouldn’t wake up. She got into her car and made the drive home, parking in front of her building before entering the building. Rather than use the front entrance and the main elevator she used the freight elevator and stepped into her unit on the top floor. “Honey I’m home.” she said in a sarcastic sing-song voice as she entered her empty apartment, snorting at what has become an odd habit of hers over the years. She dropped her bag on the table and walked across the large open space to the large sliding door that hid her bathroom from the open floor plan. She

“What the heck was that all about?” Lydia wondered with a frown on her face, looking at her friend in concern.“Nothing good.” Kinsley muttered. “I have to talk with Sawyer, call me when your acquaintance comes in.” She informed as she turned and made her way into the back bedroom, opening the door and frowning softly when she noticed Sawyer was awake and working and not resting like he should have been. “Normally I’d scold you for not listening to Weaver but I have to talk to you about something important.”“What is it Kins? I can feel the turmoil and anger radiating around you right now.” She scoffed at the remark and sat on the bed facing him, running a hand over her face in annoyance.“Well, we just had a visit from Jarrod. He was here to ask me down to the station so I could answer some questions about your attack. Apparently, it’s now an active police investigation.”“What? How in the fuck does he even know what happened?” Sawyer questioned, his blue eyes flashing and a wave of

Kinsley paced in the lab, chewing her thumbnail and watching Weaver in concern. They sat looking over the pictures and all the notes Kinsley had taken during her meeting with Deidra in Danu Forest. Their face was dark and stormy, the energy coming off of them was full of turmoil, apprehension, and the one that made Kinsley sick with dread, and fear. If Weaver was scared then whatever was in Danu forest was very very bad indeed. “So what are we looking at Weaver?” Sawyer asked from his spot on the stairs. When Kinsley got the pictures and the notes from him for Weaver to look at he could tell something was wrong. So despite his sister's protests he hauled himself to Weaver’s lab and sat on the stairs, his legs having given up before he got further into the room. “Nothing good that's for sure. This magic is ancient, and so very angry to be trapped. It would have tried to consume you Kins, feed off everything you are and leave you a husk once it was done. Right now it's too unpredictabl

Kinsley walked beside Deidra as the two ventured closer to the trees bordering Deidra’s land. The forest was heavy and dense, with hardly any sunlight peeking through the trees. The clearing Diedra had her property in was startlingly bright in comparison to the constant twilight that the surrounding trees lived in. Kinsley knew without a doubt that stepping into those trees was a one-way trip. She’d never be able to find her way out if she so much as stepped inside their shadowed cover. She stopped short as she felt a heavy presence lingering in the air ahead of them, it was low to the ground, almost coiled around something. It had the unmistakable feeling of death and violence like it was lying in wait for something. Deidra moved to keep going but Kinsley shot her hand out to halt her and crouched, putting her fingers to the soil while Deidra watched Kinsley curiously, her cat still in her arms, who was also watching closely. “Whatever attacked is still lingering, waiting to latch o

“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” Kinsley muttered to herself as she drove down the access road that would take her to the client's home, the forest already heavy and thick around her. She sighed and quickly glanced at the GPS, making sure she was going in the right direction. The last thing she wanted to do was get lost in this place. Her grip on the steering wheel tightened as the road in front of her widened and curved into a large driveway, leading her to stop in front of a surprisingly large farmhouse. It was 2 stories with a large wrap-around porch and white siding. The screen door was open and a small petite woman was standing in the doorway watching as Kinsley’s car rolled to a stop. There were a few chickens strutting about, a dog laying on the porch curled up with what looked to be a baby goat and a baby sh
