Chapter 3

Why is it so cold first thing in the morning? I thought scowling as I rugged up in my blanket before dragging my feet to the kitchen. My first night in a different bed wasn’t too bad even if I had cried myself to sleep knowing that for some reason the Luna and Alpha refused to accept me as Xander’s mate. I took solace in the fact that I would prove them both wrong in a few weeks.

“Morning sleepy head” Domini grinned at my scowling face as he made pancakes.

I poked my tongue out at him taking a seat at the island, glancing out at the window past the balcony to see the world was still dark.

“Why in Goddess’s name do I have to be awake so early?”

Domini chuckled, “cause my house, my rules” he winked playfully as he sat down a plate of pancakes and a hot cup of coffee.

“Besides, I need to be at the training grounds first to set everything up and well… I’m going to make you help.” He said with a shrug as I felt another scowl form on my face. He sighed deeply as if frustrated by my attitude, “Look, Laura, you have to learn how to fight and have to start pulling your weight around the pack.”

I pouted thinking about how stupid that was considering I was going to be next in line to be Luna but chose to keep that thought to myself. Domini obviously did not believe me yesterday and wouldn’t today. He sighed again before pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Well, is there another job you would prefer to do?”

I sipped my coffee thinking about what jobs in the pack I wouldn’t mind doing when I realized I wasn’t even sure what sort of jobs there were. My checks started to go red as I quickly looked down at my breakfast, “oh, ah I suppose I hadn’t given that any thought. I’m happy to do what you want me to do for now.”

Domini smiled turning his attention to his own food as I breathed a sigh of relief that he did question me further, how dumb was I? Surely I had learned about jobs within the pack at some point? Wasn’t that something a Luna should know? I would have to find someone to help me learn that wouldn’t give me grief. I knew Domini would tease me relentlessly if he found out I had not had a clue!

“So what did you need my help with?” I asked trying to stop the embarrassing thoughts. Domini glanced at me quickly a look of uncertainty on his face.

“Well, training normally begins once you have your wolf form however as we have so many of you kids that have been born a month apart this year we are incorporating class.”

I stared at him confused and he sighed again before giving me a look as if saying are you dumb?

“Laura, you will need to help me set up training for those of you who have not yet transformed. I, as a wolf that has already transformed, will be teaching the other kids that have transformed?” He trailed off questioning himself, I blinking blankly for a moment before it made sense.

“Oh, I get you. So who is training us?”

“Ah, no one at the moment, mostly your group will be doing typical training… like humans.”

Oh, I thought it would have been more exciting. I felt my face fall in disappointment as he gave me a sympathetic look.

It took way longer than I thought it would set up the training grounds, we were holding it towards the back end of the packhouse. Those of us, such as myself, who hadn’t had our first shift had the clearing full of boot camp-style equipment. And those who shifted last night were to start learning the patrol parameters as from now on they would be taking it in turns to protect the whole pack.

“Good job kiddo!” Domini grinned at me as I wiped the sweat off my face. I felt my chest puff up in pride knowing that even if I had not yet shifted I was strong.

“You didn’t even need my help! I’m excited to see you at your full potential!” He gave my hair a toss before turning around towards the other students starting to arrive. I looked around searching their faces for Micheal, Ellen, or Xander but couldn’t see any of them. I waited for a bit as the other kids started to funnel into groups, I was surprised that almost half the class stood near me still un-shifted. For some reason, I thought Xander and I were outliers but I guess that was a silly thought to have.

“Alright! Everyone listen up!” Domini called to our group getting our attention, looking around everyone seemed to be a mix of agitation and nervousness.

“So, you guys will be staying here till your first shift next month. Now I still expect you to work hard without my watchful eye as your bodies need to stay strong.”

One of the other girls giggled as I heard some classmates speaking in hushed whispers.

“Just as a reminder, the first shift is the hardest and most painful experience you will ever have. So keeping your bodies fit and healthy is the best way to make it easier on yourselves.” Domini’s eyes were stern, a felt my heart flutter as those words finally hit me. How painful was it going to be?

“And as proof of how awful the first shift is you can see only a handful of your other classmates were able to make it today.”

I felt myself grin as Ellen walked up next to Domini, a little weirded out by the starry, dreamy-like look she was giving him. Looking past her I could see that only 4 other students stood at the forest line separating the wilderness from the packhouse. A tall stranger caught my eye standing far away from all of us, I couldn’t make out a lot of his features but something about him made me stare. I could see an un-brushed mop of black hair sitting just above his cheekbones which were set in a scowl. His muscular arms crossed over his chest as if he wanted to be anywhere else but here. I felt my eyes trail his body up and down without meaning to when his eyes connected with mine. Immediately I hung my head in shame as the hot embarrassment of being caught checking him out hit me.

“So if you are a fan of every single bone in your body shattering I would suggest doing your stretches.” Ellen’s voice trailed off as I realized I hadn’t been paying attention. I glanced around quickly to make sure no one had noticed my embarrassment, no one had been looking at me but were all staring at the stranger too. I let out a sigh of relief before grinning at Ellen ready to congratulate her on her first shift. She was staring at Domini still as if he was the Moon Goddess herself. I elbowed her to get her attention and she turned to me with a scowl.

“Why did you do that?” She muttered rubbing her side.

“Well, you seemed too busy to notice me!” I giggled playfully before glancing at Domini and back to her, “crush? How cute?”

She glared as her nostrils flared before rolling her eyes, “no Laura, for your information I was just…”

“Okay! Now, before we separate into groups. I would just like to warn everyone that Alpha Clide and Xander have returned home early. However, they have brought a guest with them who may or may not be standing behind me at the tree line.”

Some of the girls giggled and gasped as he said that knowing he had caught most of us staring, which made me feel much less embarrassed but still way too nervous to look again.

“He is Alpha Victor of the Crimson pack, and you are all to show him the same respect as you would our own Alpha.”

Domini glared at some of the girls as they continued to giggle before glancing at me quickly, a strange look of worry in his eyes. He and Ellen turned walking towards the other students preparing to enter the woods to shift, I stole a glance at the stranger only to find his black eyes glaring back at me. I felt my heart stop in fear quickly looking back down to my feet uncertain if that was a look just for me or at all of us.

“Xander!” One of the girls from the class swooned as my heart fluttered as I stared at him approaching. He waved as a small smile played on his face before he turned his eyes away from me, I felt a pang of hurt roll over me.

“Hey everyone!” He addressed the class with a wave as people started to crowd him with questions. I waited, staring at him hoping he would acknowledge me as he used to. The class knew we were together and there were no elders here to raise suspicion. But he didn’t. He ignored me. I stood there feeling my heartbreak with hurt and confusion at his flipping attitude, as if I was nothing to him he walked straight past me without a second thought. I felt my eyes brim with tears so I did what anyone would do, I ran. I ran back inside and into my room.

I felt awful, embarrassed, hurt, and idiotic. How could I have let myself believe that he would still like me? After all, what did I even have to offer him? Still, part of me had hoped and prayed that nothing would have changed. Yes, the Alpha and Luna were against our relationship but so was every other adult! It had never stopped him before! I aggressively turned over in my bed snuggling myself tighter into the blankets letting my tears flow freely. The stares from my other classmates haunting me, their looks of pity drilled into my conscious. With the deep glare from that stranger mixing in with them, suddenly they started laughing… a course of horrendous laughing and pointing. “What a pathetic excuse for a wolf!” “Of course he doesn’t want you!” “Stupid girl!” I tried to run away from them but fell over my own two feet. Their laughter got louder, even Ellen stood over me sniggering. “As if an Alpha’s son would lower himself to be with you,

Ellen and I had been in such deep conversation neither of us noticed another person approaching us until she spoke. “Wow, Ellen. I didn’t think you would still insist on pitying this loser now you shifted.” I looked up not bothering to mask my hatred at Sam, towering over me. She had a smirk playing on her thin brightly colored lips, her eyes amused. Ellen rolled her eyes before scoffing “Sam, we are never going to be friends you know that right?” Sam looked at Ellen shocked as if she had believed they were friends. I suppose I could understand why Sam insisted on trying to be her friend, they were both blondes, both considered the most attractive of our class and both had a bit of a bitchy attitude. “So you’re okay with being seen with a loser?” She glanced at me, that smug smile returning. “Or did you not hear? She ran off cowering this morning all because Xander finally woke up and realized he can do better.” I felt my cheeks fl

I crept around the packhouse doing my best to sneak into the house-keepers room without being spotted, fear that I would be ridiculed made my heart panic. However, that was silly of me because as soon as I opened the door I saw a lot of my fellow students getting ready to do daily tasks.“Oh, Laura! I’m surprised to see you here!” A girl with wavy red hair called out giving me a small wave and warm smile.I returned her smile as I tried to recall her name, she rolled her eyes before grasping my hand in a handshake.“Bella, seriously Laura I knew you were shy but we have been sitting next to each other for years!” Her voice was light and kind but that still did not stop the embarrassment to consume me. As always my cheeks flushed hot red as I struggled to make eye contact. She raised her eyebrow quizzically but changed the subject.“So, we were all just discussing what floor we were going to do. Have you done any housekeeping before?”“No… umm” I ma

My eyes hurt from the hours of crying but my heart felt a little better. Almost relieved. I stood from my bed and stretched out my arms, smiling as my bones cracked. For a moment I wondered where Domini was as he should have returned by this point but shrugged it off. He was a grown man and I wasn’t his mother. I felt tempted to have a shower knowing it would freshen me up, however, a surge of hunger beckoned me to the kitchen. I was sat at the breakfast bench about to gorge myself on a freshly cooked steak as the door slammed open. I jumped looking at an angry Domini and Alpha Clide entering. My heart hammered with nerves as Alpha gave me an apologetic look as Domini seemed to be seething in anger.“Good evening my dear,” Alpha called to me in a soothing tone “I’m afraid I will need you to take leave for an hour or so.”I glanced to Domini as he nodded a curt yes, I looked at my steak painted as

No one had spoken, the air was almost thick with uneasiness as I glanced between the staring contest currently taking place between Alpha Clide and Domini. I let out a frustrated sigh as they both glanced at me surprised at the sudden sound. “Is anyone going to start this ‘grown up’ conversation or can I go to bed?” I asked a little agitated. Domini stared expectantly at Alpha Clide, I was shocked to see him nervously shift his weight again staring down at his clasped hands. “Well… you see…” he glanced to Domini pleadingly but Domini shook his head pursing his lips closed. Clide sighed deeply closing his eyes. “Laura, I know myself and the Luna have not really included you in a lot of things….” He started again before stopping looking again at Domini as if hoping he would take over. He shook his head again a look of disdain on his face. “Alpha, this is your mess.” I gasped shocked at Domini’s tone but he paid me no attention, staring a

For the life of me, I was unable to track down the Luna. It was as if she was avoiding me. I leaned against the wall of the main entrance to the packhouse, closing my eyes to think. Everyone I had spoken to today had directed me to where the Luna was supposed to be, but as soon as I arrived she was gone. I let out an agitated groan running my fingers through my hair trying to think of why she would be doing this? Perhaps the Alpha had told her I was upset? But that surely wouldn’t make her dodge me?“Laura?” An instant smile spread across my face as I opened my eyes to see Micheal standing nervously near me.“Micheal!” I exclaimed before hugging him tightly, “where on earth have you been?”He chuckled returning my hug.“Did Ellen not mention I… needed to take a leave of absence?” His voice shook a little with embarrassment.I pulled back to see him looking around at the crowd of people co

She stopped in front of me as I stared at her expensive-looking silver heels as she cleared her throat. I held my breath as I looked up to see her serious gaze staring back at me. I felt a small amount of relief that she no longer seemed angry but her words still cut through me like a knife.“What the hell were you thinking?” I quickly looked back down unsure of what exactly she was referring to but still feeling shameful.“Laura.” She sighed disappointed, pausing for a moment before bending down to lift my head back up so our eyes connected.“My sweet child, I should have been more open with you.” My heart hammered as her gaze shifted to calm almost kind demeanor. I wished I had of given the idea more credence sooner, and not wasted so much time chasing Xander. Xander… why did his name still bring that heaviness to me, was it true? That I had multiple mates?“My Luna?” Victor called me back to reality with a look of concern.I felt oddly guilty, as if it was wrong of me to have any remaining feelings towards him, that even the mere thought was somehow a slight against Victor. “No… it’s can’t be true…” She whispered as Victor glared at her before glancing at me, worried. “What? What does that mean?!” I asked as Victor picked up another shirt covering the mark. “It means…” Victor sighed, pained. “That I am your second mate.” I stared blankly at him as Rebbeka looked between us horrified and confused. “As in... my second chance mate?” I asked hopeful, yet understanding what this really meant…. “No…” Rebbeka said softly, her eyes flicking back to my mark. “It means you have more than one.” I looked at Victor, my heart hurting at his jealous and pained expression. I didn’t want this… “So… he is her… first mate... ?” Rebbeka asked Victor nervously as if I was no longer in the room. I had expected to be alone for a while once Ellen left to find Domini, and yet no sooner had she left Rebbeka was at the door. A grin plastered on her face, her eyes wide with joy at the mere sight of me. It made me somewhat uncomfortable, she seemed to see me as … as an actual Luna. “Luna!” She exclaimed happily letting herself in, glancing around in disdain at Victor’s room, almost in the same vein as I had. “I had assumed he would have… done something in here…” She mumbled to herself before standing a few meters away from me, one hand on her hip looking down at me with excited eyes. “Luna Laura, I’m sure you are quite busy at the moment… well after the events of today” she smirked as if holding back a giggle before her eyes narrowed and I saw a flash of anger that chilled me. “Of course Alpha Victor has advised me you are insisting on being present during… during the interrogation of the vampire.” She spat vampire with such pure hatred I felt my heart

He gave me a strange look, before sighing and pressing his forehead against mine. I was surprised how sweet and loving his action felt, his skin seemed so pleasantly warm against mine instantly calming down that strange panic “My Luna, It’s okay. I may have reacted… well… a little overreaction really.” He sighed again before planting a light kiss on my forehead. “This room used to be my parents, I just never had the… desire or need to change it dramatically.” I felt more guilt bubble inside me as he kissed my forehead again. “You didn’t know, besides you are right.” He pulled away to give me a small yet sa

At least his scent overpowered all the others, his soft and steady heartbeat silenced the insistent noises from the house. He brought us into a new room, it was spacious as if it had not been finished yet. The walls and ceiling were a dull and boring off cream color, Victor put me down on a huge king bed with a white canopy. I
