“Raymond! Slower please…” I tried to get his name out to be as audible as possible as we hit climax, my vision as foggy as possible as he took his head out of my neck, our gasps filling the room as we both crashed by each other, our hearts— or maybe just mine— beating extremely fast.
I gulped as I gently put my hand to my neck, caressing his mark. The mark signified our bond. As I closed my eyes, relishing in the warmth from our moment just now, unable to believe I’d just been marked by my Alpha, his icy voice shot through.
“Our nominal mate contract ends in three months.” When he spoke, so coldly, without an ounce of emotion, it felt like my breath had been caught in my throat.
I fiddled with the sheets, waiting for him to say something, anything other than what he’d already said, but no other words left his lips.
“Ra—“ I tried to get the words out, but they failed me, leaving me with no other option but to cling on to denial.
He looked so calm that you wouldn’t have guessed we’d been in each others’ arms earlier, moaning in pleasure as we gave each other orgasms before he marked me.
Three years ago, Raymond and I had reached an agreement. I became his agent Luna so that he could solidify his position in the Alpha council and also become his assistant, pushing through professional boundaries with him. In return, he’d agreed to pay off my family’s debts and three years ago, that had been all I ever really wanted.
“This is just a transaction, Aria. A mutually beneficial agreement. I hope you always remember that.” As I recalled his words, I felt a knot form in my stomach as I clenched my fists, doing my best to fight the tears that were now threatening to stream down my cheeks.
It was always supposed to remain a mere transaction— until I’d fallen in love with him, so deep that I wasn’t sure I could ever be pulled out of it.
“I love you, Aria. This— what we have is more than just an agreement. You are my mate. I want you to be mine, to be more than just my Agent Luna. I want you to be MY Luna. You are mine.” Many times, I’d even fantasized about the day he would fall in love with me or at least start to, but as it stood, I would probably not get to see that day.
My wolf kicked within me.
“Raymond, I was wondering...” the words finally left my lips as I struggled to breathe. I took a deep inhale as I tried to sound as coaxing as possible. “It’s your birthday tomorrow. Can we spend it together? I’ll prepare you—“ my words trailed off the moment I felt his hand on my bare skin, pulling me closer to himself, so close I could feel his hot breath that betrayed his cold expression on my skin, causing the hairs on my skin to stand as my wolf jumped within me.
“Do not try to change whatever this is, Aria.” He paused, probably to check if he was passing his message across properly. His tone, as mocking as possible, he continued. “Nominal mates, a contractual couple, and bed partners— that’s all.” He made sure to emphasize on the last part and it was so hard on me it felt like a bulldozer had just been dropped on me.
“Did you love at all— even once— all these years?” I asked again, my throat so dry every word that came out of my mouth hurt.
Not uttering a single response, he pushed me aside as he got off the bed, grabbing his clothes as he threw them on, ignoring eye contact with me like he would contract a disease if he did.
“If you don’t,” my voice started to trail off as the tears started to push even more. “If you don’t, why does it seem like I’m the only woman you care about every time we make love? Every time I feel your touch, it feels far from just a contractual relationship. Every moment you’re buried inside of me, your hands moving around my body— it feels real, Alpha Raymond. It still does.”
Finally, he turned to me, but his expression showed off how much disgust he felt from my words.
“It was just and will always be just a contract, Aria.” He looked at me, like he was deliberating saying the next words, but then, he went ahead and just said it. “She’s back.”
Casually slipping out a contraceptive as he dropped it on the table, he passed me one more unreadable expression before leaving.
She’s back. Two words. Two words that shattered me to the very core.
She was his ex-girlfriend. I was her replacement. She was the first person he loved and many times, in his dreams, I’d heard him call out to her with so much emotional depth you’d never believe the stoic expression he carried around.
I pushed myself to the table where he’d dropped the contraceptive pill as with a growing knot in my stomach and throat, I swallowed it, tears streaming down my cheeks as I held on tighter to the sheets that had been witness to the love we’d made and his mark on me.
I wanted to relish in the moment but I couldn’t as immediately, the knot formed to its fullest, leaving me no time to hold on tighter to the sheets as I rushed straight to the bathroom, pouring out my guts into the sink as I gasped weakly, barely able to remain standing.
My heart started to beat extremely fast, I looked into the sink, at the color of my vomit, as the doctor’s words played in my head.
“Take this pill before the next time. When you throw up and it’s yellow, it means you’re fine. You can come back for another checkup. If it’s brown however—“ she smiled. “Then congratulations, you are pregnant.”
I looked into the sink, the brown vomit staring me in the eye as I fell against the wall. “I’m pregnant.”
ARIA’s POV…..I’d change everything. Perhaps, if I tried harder, I’d make him fall for me and then I’d tell him about our child. These thoughts crossed through my mind as I set the ingredients aside. As I set up the dishes, the revving sound from outside caused me to turn as Raymond’s black SUV came into view.Reflexively, a smile came up my face as I cleaned my hands on the apron I was on, rushing outside to go greet him. It didn’t matter what he’d said yesterday, or that his words still rang fresh in my head.I pushed those thoughts to the back of my mind— where they belonged— as I stood outside the door, all smiles. How this man managed to make me so happy with just his presence; I couldn’t tell. All I knew was that I was in love with him. Too deep to come out of it at all and hopefully, by the goddess’ grace, in these coming months, I wouldn’t have to because he’d be too deep in love with me, too.“Ray—“ My excited call out to him got caught in my throat the moment the blonde got
ARIA’s POV….If I had been holding on to little fragments of hope for our relationship that was already failing all this time, now, I was holding on to dust.As Raymond stared at me, his expression went back to being unreadable as he let out a sigh. “No one important.” My heart clenched as my eyes became glassy. “She’s just a maid, there’s no need for an introduction. Your kind has nothing to do with hers.”Ashley raised her brows as she took a step closer to me, wiping off an invisible dust on my shoulder as she let out a mocking scoff disguised as a pitiful one.“You poor thing.” She kissed the back of her teeth. “It must suck trying to act all high and mighty when in reality, you’re nothing more than this, doesn’t it?”I turned to Raymond who just stood there like I wasn’t being mocked and downgraded in his presence and it hurt to see that even though he could defend me and spare me all this pain, he didn’t.“As a princess, I can understand the pain your kind goes through every sing
ARIA’s POV….“Alpha Raymond.” How much it stung to address the man I was in love with, the only man who’d taken me to heaven and back, by his title. He furrowed his brows as he stared at me, like he could tell something was wrong, but I knew better than to have extremely high hopes when it came to him. “I asked something. What are you doing here?” His tone was still cold.“Stomach flu.” I lied as I held on tighter to the drugs Eric had handed me. “It’s not a big deal. I’ll be fine.” Another lie. How could I be fine being having a baby I couldn’t give up and at the same time, couldn’t afford the father knowing of—yet? He was silent, staring at me, as if trying to confirm whether my words were true or not. Such little trust. “Hmm.” He finally made a sound as he nodded in a rather suspicious way. “I hope you’re not lying to me or doing something stupid.”“I’m not.” Yet another lie. What was going on with me? How could I tell these lies without so much as even blinking? My eyes traveled be
ARIA’s POV….“I—I—“ I turned around slowly, my heart beating faster than a ticking time bomb as I swallowed.Having him stand just a few inches away from me, even if we weren’t making physical contact, was causing me to feel weak in the limbs and making my wolf to jump so much within me and I hated my body and wolf for betraying me in times like these.“You were what?” He sounded impatient, like he couldn’t wait to be done talking to me even though he’d been the one who came all the way into my bathroom.“I was taking medicine. That was just trash.” It sounded like the perfect thing to say especially as I’d just returned from the hospital. He stared at me, a hint of doubt evident in his eyes, but he blinked it away in a second, returning to his usual cold and expressionless face.He looked behind me, to the containers on the sink as he let out a soft exhale. It’d been soft but it’d felt like I was in front of a heater as I grabbed on to the sides of my dress, doing my best to remain ro
ARIA’s POV….“Ahh.” I gasped as I rubbed my forehead gently, shaking my head as I hoped it’d push all the pain to the back of my head.I rubbed my neck gently as Raymond’s words from last night came back to mind. What’s there to miss or remember about an omega like you? I’d slept through it, but recalling it still stung.“Aria?” I heard my name as a knock followed on the door. I looked at the wall clock. Who could be here to see me so early in the morning?“Coming.” I responded as I fixed my hair, rushing to the door as I opened it to see Ashley and Beta Luke—Raymond’s beta— standing at the door, luggages in hand.“Is anything wrong? What are you doing here by this time and I hope everything is fine?” It didn’t really bother me to see Beta Luke, but Ashley, I didn’t even like breathing the same air as she did.She pushed the luggage she had with her in front as she scoffed, flipping her hair behind her as she rolled her eyes. “Aren’t you the maid here?” She eyed my clothes.“Why aren’t
ARIA’s POV…“I’ll wash them.” My voice was faint and even though I’d known better than to expect any more from Raymond, I was still disappointed. My heart sank as I raised my head toward Raymond, feeling suffocated by his favoritism towards Ashley. He didn’t seem to bat an eyelid and I clenched my fists as I forced the sourness rising in my throat back down. This wasn’t the time for nausea or any pregnancy related symptoms.“Expecting a parade? Get going.” Ashley nudged with her head as she rolled her eyes.I let out an exhale as I grabbed the box, pushing it with all my might towards the laundry room. As I did, I heard her scowl, her voice lower than usual.“The maids should know their place, don’t you think?” She grumbled. Her voice held so much contempt and she didn’t even bother to disguise it.I ignored her as I went straight to the laundry room, getting straight to work. ARIA’s POV….“Isn’t she?” His voice became lower, more acidic and it sounded like it was laced with poison.I slowly turned to Eric, pressing my lips tight as I subtly shook my head so as not to attract Raymond’s attention. Not much was said—or done— but he got the message.“Nausea is common and those with anemia are prone to stomach discomfort.” He’d managed to feign his voice to sound so calm even though I knew he was fidgeting on the inside from having lied to his Alpha. His time in medical school definitely didn’t go to waste.“Besides, we conducted some blood tests. Lu— Aria’s blood doesn’t show any signs of pregnancy.” He finished, calm and collected. If I didn’t know the truth and if I hadn’t been the one who begged him not to say anything, I’d have actually believed I wasn’t pregnant.I turned to Raymond, trying to make do of his reaction, but I got nothing more than his usual expressionless face. I turned away from her.“I suggest you conduct a more comprehensive examination.
ARIA’s POV….His hand paused on my shoulder as his brows crunched for a few seconds before returning to normal.“That won’t happen.” He said, his tone so icy it could freeze meat for days. “The doctor didn’t say anything about you being pregnant.” Not the answer I’d wanted, or expected.“In three months, all of this—“ his fingers vaguely pointed between him and I and I knew what he was trying to say. “It’ll be over.” He straightened his position as I raised my head to match with his height so I could look at him.“You didn’t answer the question, though. What if I am?” I knew he wouldn’t welcome the child or anything, but I still wanted to hear him say something. Anything.“Don’t play any tricks, Aria. Go tell Ashley you’re fine and don’t give her any reason to be worried.” I clenched my fists at his words.Ashley. How did her name manage to creep into every single conversation?I nodded slightly at him, responding with the faintest voice even though I’d tried my best to sound audible e
RAYMOND’s POV…“I’m leaving, Raymond. I can’t do this anymore.” She told me as she pulled her suitcases and bags.“What do you mean you can’t do this anymore? We promised to be together forever, didn’t we, Ashley? How—“ I grabbed her hand, but she took hers out of mine immediately as she shook her head.“People break promises. I wouldn’t be the first to do so. Just let me go.” Her voice became softer as she shook her head. “Don’t make this any harder for me than it already is.” “Ashley, we can work this out together. We can fight for our love and—““How can we do that, though?” Her voice became lower. “It’s already enough for you to have to fight to become the Alpha with your brother being your sole competitor. What’ll happen to me if you don’t win? My father wouldn’t support this.” She said as she pointed vaguely between us. That was the last she said before she pushed her things into the trunk of the car, getting in as she turned to me, sadness evident in her eyes.“Ashley—“ my voic
