“I’ll wash them.” My voice was faint and even though I’d known better than to expect any more from Raymond, I was still disappointed.
My heart sank as I raised my head toward Raymond, feeling suffocated by his favoritism towards Ashley. He didn’t seem to bat an eyelid and I clenched my fists as I forced the sourness rising in my throat back down. This wasn’t the time for nausea or any pregnancy related symptoms.
“Expecting a parade? Get going.” Ashley nudged with her head as she rolled her eyes.
I let out an exhale as I grabbed the box, pushing it with all my might towards the laundry room. As I did, I heard her scowl, her voice lower than usual.
“The maids should know their place, don’t you think?” She grumbled. Her voice held so much contempt and she didn’t even bother to disguise it.
I ignored her as I went straight to the laundry room, getting straight to work. As I did my work, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Raymond’s words.
Ashley is the future Luna of this pack and as such, her orders and requests are to be followed and attended to.
Those words would live with me for a very long time.
“Stupid Raymond.” I muttered to myself as I squeezed the clothes, carefully spreading them on the rack to dry. “How can’t he see through whatever she’s doing?” I rolled my eyes as I bent to pick another top, but just then, a knot formed in my stomach, a sharp pain following as the pain traveled through my body.
I gasped as without any warning, vomit came out of my mouth, into the drainage system—luckily. I staggered as my vision started to become blurry. I stretched my hand, hoping to find something I could hold on to but there was nothing but air.
My knees weakening was the last I recalled before I was suddenly enveloped with darkness.
“You’re awake.” I heard a cold voice say as I slowly opened my eyes to find myself in my room, Raymond’s unique figure beside my bed.
As usual, he was expressionless, his eyes only scanned my body every now and then and that was when it dawned on me that I’d passed out.
“My goodness!” I exclaimed as I sat up on the bed, his gaze still unsettled. Had he found out about my pregnancy? Was that why he was staring at me the way he currently was? I gulped as my hands reached for the sheets, squeezing them as I fought the urge to bring my hand to my stomach.
“Wh—what are you doing here? I know it’s not because you care. You’ve made it very clear you don’t.” I asked. I didn’t know why I was saying all of that, but anything to distract myself from the possibility he’d found out about our baby.
“You passed out.” He said without any emotions. “Doctor Eric examined you and now, we’re waiting for the results.” He didn’t even bat an eye lid as he spoke. Was he even a werewolf?
“He— Doctor Eric hasn’t said anything yet, right?” My anxiety was getting the best of me and if they didn’t know the truth yet, they were going to find out.
“And if he has?” My heart clenched as I felt bile rise in my throat at the thought of what Raymond would do if he found out I was with child. His child. He’d made it clear he didn’t want any children with me.
“Nothing.” I cleared my throat as I tried to avoid eye contact with him. Goodness, why was it so hot in here now? “I just wanted to know.” Half truth, half lie.
His eyes remained on me, like he was probing and scrutinizing me and I felt the hairs on my skin stand, especially as my wolf started to jump within me.
“I’m here now.” Eric rushed in with medical files and I heaved a sigh of relief. About goddamn time.
His gaze traveled between Raymond and myself and I shook my head slowly, in an attempt to plead with him not to let out the truth of my pregnancy.
“Sorry it took some time.” He didn’t show any signs as to whether he’d heed to my pleas.
“What’s wrong? She hasn’t been doing too well lately.” Raymond asked Eric, his tone a tad bit softer than usual. If I didn’t know better, I’d have thought he was actually concerned.
“Umm.” Eric paused as he looked at me, hesitation evident in his eyes before he regained his confidence and turned to Raymond.
“Luna Aria just fainted from anemia and gastroenteritis, nothing serious. She just needs to rest a little more.” I heaved a sigh of relief at his words.
I turned to Raymond who had a frown carved on his brow. “Luna Aria? How many times do I need to remind you to not forget her status.” The last word felt like a slap to the face, but I didn’t care.
“I’m sorry, Alpha Raymond. I’ll pay more attention to that in the future.” Eric apologized and Raymond’s face relaxed slightly.
“Anemia, huh?” Raymond commented, seemingly unconvinced. “She’s been throwing up lately, paying more attention to her stomach and now, she’s even passing out. Are those even symptoms of anemia and gastroenteritis?” He paused as he turned to me, our eyes locked.
“Isn’t she— pregnant?”
ARIA’s POV….“Isn’t she?” His voice became lower, more acidic and it sounded like it was laced with poison.I slowly turned to Eric, pressing my lips tight as I subtly shook my head so as not to attract Raymond’s attention. Not much was said—or done— but he got the message.“Nausea is common and those with anemia are prone to stomach discomfort.” He’d managed to feign his voice to sound so calm even though I knew he was fidgeting on the inside from having lied to his Alpha. His time in medical school definitely didn’t go to waste.“Besides, we conducted some blood tests. Lu— Aria’s blood doesn’t show any signs of pregnancy.” He finished, calm and collected. If I didn’t know the truth and if I hadn’t been the one who begged him not to say anything, I’d have actually believed I wasn’t pregnant.I turned to Raymond, trying to make do of his reaction, but I got nothing more than his usual expressionless face. I turned away from her.“I suggest you conduct a more comprehensive examination.
ARIA’s POV….His hand paused on my shoulder as his brows crunched for a few seconds before returning to normal.“That won’t happen.” He said, his tone so icy it could freeze meat for days. “The doctor didn’t say anything about you being pregnant.” Not the answer I’d wanted, or expected.“In three months, all of this—“ his fingers vaguely pointed between him and I and I knew what he was trying to say. “It’ll be over.” He straightened his position as I raised my head to match with his height so I could look at him.“You didn’t answer the question, though. What if I am?” I knew he wouldn’t welcome the child or anything, but I still wanted to hear him say something. Anything.“Don’t play any tricks, Aria. Go tell Ashley you’re fine and don’t give her any reason to be worried.” I clenched my fists at his words.Ashley. How did her name manage to creep into every single conversation?I nodded slightly at him, responding with the faintest voice even though I’d tried my best to sound audible e
RAYMOND’s POV…Flashback“I’m leaving, Raymond. I can’t do this anymore.” Ashley told me as she pulled her suitcases and bags.“What do you mean you can’t do this anymore? We promised to be together forever, didn’t we, Ashley? How—“ I grabbed her hand, but she took hers out of mine immediately as she shook her head.“People break promises. I wouldn’t be the first to do so. Just let me go.” Her voice became softer as she shook her head. “Don’t make this any harder for me than it already is.” “Ashley, we can work this out together. We can fight for our love and—““How can we do that, though?” Her voice became lower. “It’s already enough for you to have to fight to become the Alpha with your brother being your sole competitor. What’ll happen to me if you don’t win? My father wouldn’t support this.” She said as she pointed vaguely between us. That was the last she said before she pushed her things into the trunk of the car, getting in as she turned to me, sadness evident in her eyes.“A
ARIA’s POV….As the inviting scent of herbs and spices filled the kitchen while I stirred, humming to a song I’d heard at the market, I couldn’t help but be slightly distracted by the laughter coming from the other side of the pack which was directly behind the kitchen.“These people.” I clicked my tongue as I rolled my eyes.Just as I went to the cabinet, stretching to grab a bowl, I felt someone tap me as it was handed over to me.I let out a shallow breath as I took the bowl. “Thank you.” I muttered before returning to where I was busy cookingAs I set the bowls, I could feel her eyes on me the whole time and I knew she was just looking for a new reason for drama. “Ashley. Greetings.” I greeted. Whatever she wanted to use to get me into trouble, I wasn’t interested. “Your dish— whatever it is, it smells nice.” She… complimented? I didn’t know what to make of her voice so I just nodded, stirring the soup a little more as I grabbed the napkin.“Thank you.” I responded curtly as she g
ARIA’s POV….“Get up!” He ordered, his voice rough as if he was suppressing anger. He must’ve been. If there was anything these past few days had shown me, it was that he couldn’t stand my presence.“Get up?” I stared at him confused, his hand still on me. I blinked as I turned my head left. Before I could turn back to him to speak again, he grabbed my wrist, his grip so tight it felt like I was bound in chains.I wriggled my hand, trying to get free, but before I could, he yanked me off the bed, my ankle giving way slightly as I crashed into his body, a sharp pain coursing through me in no time.I felt my eyes go inside out as I bit my lips to avoid making a sound, my hand gently going to my stomach as he wriggled my hand.“When I say get up, you do as I say. Got it?” He scolded and I gulped as I did my best to push the pain to the back of my head even though it was now obvious I sucked at it.“Wh—what for?” I asked as the pain continued. I looked to my hand and I could still see him
ARIA’s POVDoes he truly see me as nothing more than a pariah, deserving of nothing but scorn? Does he genuinely care for Ashley, or is she just another pawn in his grand scheme? As I turned, watching him leave the house with her in his arms, her hands wrapped around his neck, it felt like a sharp blade with fiery edges had been sent into my chest.“I didn’t even do anything wrong— on purpose.” I muttered to myself as I saw them leave the front door.As I forced myself to not cry and remain strong, a sudden wave of nausea hit me as I staggered, grabbing on to the head of the couch as I coughed, my stomach stirring and churning violently.“Oh, my goodness.” I whispered, as next thing I knew, I was rushing to the nearest sink and emptying my guts inside as red clouded my vision.Whatever came out of me was both sour, itchy, and disgustingly pathetic— like my life.I coughed till I got it all out of me and just as I turned on the water, I felt another’s presence.“Aria?” I heard a deep vo
ARIA’s POV…I was going to end it all.For the sake of myself and my child, I was going to cut off all ties with Raymond. I couldn’t keep hurting my child for the sake of a future that wasn’t even clear.“He’s back.” I muttered to myself as I rushed out of my room the moment I heard the sound of his car’s engine pulling up downstairs.“Yes. I know that. Anything else?” I heard Raymond asked as he shut the door, his cold expression giving the slight heat of anger.I didn’t hear what the other person said, but I knew that it couldn’t have been good because he clenched his fists, digging his fingers into his skin before letting out a forced exhale.“There’s nothing to worry about now. Ashley is fine.” He finally said.Ashley. Speaking of her, she was brought out of the car, as she stood behind him, looking extremely weak, her face still pale.“Luna Ashley!” I heard Alice call as she rushed to Ashley, her hand coming respectfully around her as she helped her away from the door. “Are you al
ARIA’s POV…As his eyes remained on me, I felt myself become weak in the knees and I almost found myself at a loss for words, but I let out an exhale as I spoke.“About the food today.” I finally found the words as I let out a relieved exhale. “Even though it hadn’t been my intention, I’d caused your Luna harm.” My chest twisted at calling her his luna, but what could I do? It was the fact. He’d chosen her over me, not like I’d ever even been an option for him.He raised his head, trying to understand where I was coming from.“I know how much you care for her and I know how important remaining on her father’s good books is to you. Something like this can never happen again. I do not want to be the reason for any harm that comes to her.” I told him as I started to become more comfortable with my words.“Okay? I already said—““We should end our contract.” I blurted as his eyes instantly turned fiery cold— if that was even a thing. I couldn’t explain it, but there was a difference in the
ARIA’s POV…“It’s fine. You’ll be fine. Our baby will be fine.” Were the only words I could process in my head from Raymond. How we’d gotten to the hospital from the garden, how I was suddenly getting wheeled into the delivery room— these I didn’t know. What I knew however, was that Raymond was here. He was by my side.“Alpha Raymond, you’re going to have to remain outside.” The doctor said when he realized Raymond wasn’t letting go of my hand.“I can’t. I have to be with her. I won’t bother you with your work. I just want to see her and be sure she’s fine. Please.”I’d never seen Raymond plead with anyone else. His voice was vulnerable, his concern, fear, and care, evident to even the blind.“Fine.” The doctor gave in when he realized Raymond wouldn’t let go of my hand.I was in pain, a lot of pain, but with Raymond’s hand gently caressing mine, I felt a little better.HOURS LATER..“Push!” The doctor urged, Raymond’s hand squeezing even tighter on mine.“You can do this, love. I know
ARIA’s POV…My world stopped.Everything I thought was finally coming into place had crumbled and I had lost it all. I felt as empty as I did the very day my parents let me know I meant nothing to them.“No one would ever accept someone like you as a child, or a mate. To be related to you is shameful enough. I’d suggest you hop on the first person to make a move on you.”Only they didn’t give me that chance. They’d sold me off.Alpha Raymond had been my life. I’d gotten hope to live after he came into my life and I’d thought everything would be fine. Only it wasn’t. He’d rejected me.Like everyone else. The only difference? Unlike everyone else who’d thrown me out of their lives, he’d come back. And he was genuine. He loved me, and I loved him too. I wanted to live. With him. With our child.I couldn’t die. I couldn’t lose our first fight together.“Aria, no!” I heard his voice from afar.Life was fading. I could feel it, but I couldn’t just die. There had to be something I could do.“
RAYMOND’s POV….“What? How?” I yelled, almost losing control and snapping at the doctor. “What the hell is going on, goddamnit?”“Alpha Raymond, please calm down.” Eric tried to calm me, but I couldn’t be calmed.I was losing it, going crazy. With every second that passed, it felt like I was losing her, and losing her meant I was losing myself. I couldn’t deal with it.“She was stabbed, I got here almost immediately, so what fucking poison could be spreading through her right now?” I still had my hands on the doctor and he tried to get away in a respectful manner.“The knife had poison on it. It was a planned murder attempt. She’s still alive right now because you’d brought her here in time.”I let go of him when I heard she was still alive. I knew she was still alive because I could still feel life in my wolf. He would never survive if he’d lost his mate.“And the poison? How are you going to get it out of her?” My voice had lowered now and I felt like a person with imposter syndrom
RAYMOND’s POV…One minute, I’d been celebrating my wisdom and victory. I’d been so proud of the fact that I’d outsmarted Beta Luke who’d tried to flee the pack. The next, Ashley had made her comment.Somewhere within that minute, someone had stabbed Aria, and within that same minute, I’d run over to her, on my knees, holding her unconscious bleeding body in my arms.“Get the damn doctor! An ambulance! Get help!” I screamed like a crazed lunatic, everything in me paralyzed. The guards had seized the attacker, but I could care less at this moment. Right now, I could only think about one thing, one person— Aria. My mate, the love of my life, the woman whose life was now in danger because of me.“Alpha Raymond!”No one mattered at that moment. All that mattered was Aria and saving her life.“Aria, it’s fine. You’re fine. Please.” I muttered, unsure of who I was.I carried her in my arms, rushing out of the mansion immediately. I didn’t know how the black car got here, but I got into it i
RAYMOND’s POV…I could hear the murmurs that followed my announcement and I wasn’t surprised. They’d witnessed everything. They’d been here when I got ‘married’ to Aria. They’d also been here when I took Ashley in and treated Aria like she meant nothing. Now, I’d brought that same woman back. I couldn’t judge them for their murmurs. If I was in their shoes, I’d do the same.“Ashley, Alpha James, Beta Luke.” I called their names with disgust. “You’ve all been screaming to be let go, but never once have you asked what you did wrong. I assume you already know.”The guards brought Luke forward, throwing him at Ashley and her father’s feet and I smirked in satisfaction at the look of utter shock on his face.“You thought your tracks were clean, didn’t you? You thought you could kill everyone off so nothing would be traced back to you and it would be fine, didn’t you?” I clicked my tongue. “Pathetic.”I honestly felt insulted at how easy it’d been to catch all three of them.“I have—I have
ARIA’s POV…“You still won’t tell me why you asked me to come with you?” This was another attempt at getting him to speak, but he didn’t.“You said it was because you didn’t like the idea of leaving me alone at the house, but we know that’s not true. So, tell me the truth. Why am I actually coming?”He took his hand off the steering wheel, gently placing it on mine and smiling reassuringly.“You know I wouldn’t do anything to hurt you though, right? You know that whatever I do, I do with your best interests at heart.”I nodded. I’d been running from it for so long, but it was the truth. Lately, I’d come to see that he’d actually changed and everything he did, he actually did for me.“It’s fine if you don’t want to talk about it.”It wasn’t, but I couldn’t say anymore. It had been so sudden, him asking me to return to his pack with him because he was worried something would happen. In the days that passed, he’d managed to calm me about the whole harasser situation and since there’d been
RAYMOND’s POV…“Thank you, doctor.”“You’re welcome. Honestly, I still think it’s too sudden to leave the hospital, but judging from what’s happened, I know it’s best she goes home; to a place she’s more comfortable.”I nodded in agreement. The harasser’s presence in the hospital had startled her and even though I’d let her believe the harasser was dead so she wouldn’t worry anymore, I knew he wasn’t.That man had killed himself too easily to be the harasser. There was someone else and I would find the bastard and make him pay for every single moment of restlessness Aria had been in.“The hospital will make security more uptight, and scrutinize the employees more.” Regret and guilt coated his voice as he took out a file and handed it to me.“Those are his details. Before he died, he’d been in some debts. I’m guessing those will help.”We spoke for a little bit more before he had to excuse himself.I stretched my hand, letting the man behind me take the file before I returned to the w
ARIA’s POV…“Aria.” Raymond rushed in, straight to my side as he pulled me in for a hug. “What happened?” He was referring to the pieces of glass on the floor.“The harasser. They— they—“ I couldn’t get the words out so I just handed him the most recent note from the attacker. “They sent another. It’s not over, Raymond. They’re not done.” I cried. He took the note, sliding it into his pocket, his hand rubbing my back.“It’s fine. All of this will be over soon. I promise you.” He sounded so calm and collected, like it wasn’t my life and that of my baby’s at stake. What did I expect, though? He was an Alpha. He was used to being calm and collected. A knife could be held to his neck and he still wouldn’t show a single emotion.“I just want to go home.” I admitted, my hands still wrapped around him. “I’m tired of being here, of being somewhere that’s not home. It’s suffocating. I can’t stay here anymore.”“Come with me to my house.” I withdrew from the hug, staring at him, confused. “Not t
ARIA’s POV…‘Keep going, Aria. Keep going.’ A voice in my head urged me and even though my feet, vision, and body weren’t in compliance, I kept going.“Aria!” I heard my name again, but this time, the voice was even more faint.I was losing consciousness. I could barely keep up. I needed to get my baby to safety.I kept running, willing to give it my all, when a car suddenly came out of nowhere with blinding headlights. I screamed, coming to an abrupt stop and turning, I crashed into a firm chest.“Argh!”I’d thought it was over for me and it would be one of the men, but it wasn’t. It was the only man I wanted to be with at that moment.“Raymond.” I muttered weakly as his hands came around me, hugging me tightly while his mouth did the pressing of kisses on my head.“It’s fine. You’re fine.”I felt relief wash over me, but I didn’t get to savor it for long. I’d hit my limit. Raymond’s assuring words were the last thing I heard before darkness enveloped the course of my entire being.**
