KATE halted from pacing back and forth and looked at the dress her Aunt Bernice brought before leaving her again. It really looked expensive, which bothered her. How come her aunt, who treated her like a servant for years, bought her such an expensive dress? There was something wrong with it; Kate could feel the ominous vibe since they left home for the banquet.
“Kate!” Her aunt’s voice roared at the back of the closed door of her suite, followed by three loud consecutive bangs. “Katherine, open the damn door!”
Sighing, she strode towards the door and opened it.
Aunt Bernice gave her a once-over before poking her hard on the forehead.
“Didn’t I tell you to get dressed? Why are you still dressed in a robe?”
“A-auntie… I-I…” She shut her eyes tightly and cussed to herself. She could not even say what she wanted to say. Kate was afraid that if the wrong words escaped from her mouth, her aunt would hit her.
Aunt Bernice grasped both of her arms and shook her hard.
“Get dressed and join me at the banquet. Mr. Abel badly wants to see you,” her aunt said through gritted teeth. “This is our only chance for him to sign the cooperation with the company. And as promised, once the cooperation is successful, I will set you free.”
Kate whimpered like a puppy when her aunt’s palm landed on her cheek. She did not hit her, though. It was just a light tap on her cheek, something Kate did not expect from Aunt Bernice. She opened her mouth to say something, but then, she was interrupted by a phone call.
Her aunt grabbed the phone from the bedside table and went inside the bathroom. Kate sauntered towards the bathroom door and leaned on it, trying to listen to whatever Aunt Bernice was saying to the caller. But all she could hear was the splashing sound of water. It seemed that her aunt was hiding something.
She was about to move away from the door when she heard her aunt’s loud voice.
“Don’t let him leave the banquet, Vivian! Do everything that you can to make Mr. Abel stay. I’m just waiting for your stupid cousin to get dressed.” Aunt Bernice paused. She must be listening to whatever her daughter was saying. “You don’t have to worry, dear. Everything will be fine. Mr. Abel will sign the cooperation once he gets Kate. That old fart really likes your cousin.”
Kate’s eyeballs bulged after hearing her aunt’s words. Her hunch was right all along. Aunt Bernice was up to something, and that was to sell her to some old businessman for cooperation. Her tears started to well up when she realized how miserable her life was.
Her hands clenched tightly against the hem of that silk robe that she wore. No one will save her at that point but herself. She must run away and hide. Kate sneaked out of the hotel suite. Seeing the long hallway already made her feel hopeless. It seemed as if she was inside a labyrinth.
Kate ran past through a lot of closed suite doors until she saw an open one. She looked inside to check. No one was inside the hotel suite. Perhaps she could hide there in the meantime. She must hide until her aunt left the floor.
Not long after she went inside, she heard footsteps approaching, followed by the loud voice of her Aunt Bernice, calling her name. She immediately went inside the bathroom and locked the door. Then, she got inside the huge empty bathtub and sat there hugging her legs. Kate started sobbing as her mind recalled everything that had happened.
If Cinderella did exist in the real world, it must be her. Her parents and brother died in a plane crash, leaving her alone with their company and properties that she had no idea how to manage. That was when her Aunt Bernice came into the picture. She was her father’s sister, the only close family member that she has in the country. Her maternal relatives were all in Spain, too far from her to reach in an instant. Since Aunt Bernice treated Kate warmly back then, she trusted her. She gave her full trust to the person who later betrayed her.
Kate was only eighteen when her parents died. She was raised and pampered without the knowledge of running the company and her family’s assets because they were meant to be handled by her older brother Emanuel. But unfortunately, he died with their parents. Aunt Bernice lent her a helping hand by making her sign documents, which her aunt referred to as a special power of attorney. The naïve eighteen-year-old Kate signed the papers without hesitation, only to wake up being thrown out of her family’s mansion by a broker one day. She learned that her aunt had sold the estate and other family assets and used the money to save their company from bankruptcy. Aunt Bernice then took her to their home, and that was when her nightmare started to happen.
Aunt Bernice and her cousin Vivian maltreated her. They told her to live in their house as a maid in return for food and home. And because Kate had nowhere to go, she stayed and lived in their house like a rat. Her aunt not only took away everything from her, but she also treated her badly. Aunt Bernice and Vivian abused her physically and mentally. Kate could only cry in silence every night and prayed that one day she would find an escape from the misery that she believed she brought to herself. If only she was smart enough to understand everything that was happening around her back then, she would not be stuck in a life full of agony. And now, Aunt Bernice did not seem to be contented. She wanted to use her, sell her off to an old businessman for the sake of signing cooperation. That was just so evil!
She was suddenly pulled out of her reverie when she heard the bathroom door unlocked. She immediately got out of the bathtub out of fear that her aunt had already found her when a tall, slender man entered the bathroom. Her mouth dropped open when her eyes reverted on the man’s unbuttoned long-sleeved polo, exposing his broad chest.
“Who are you?” The man’s baritone voice echoed in the corners of the bathroom. “What are you doing here?”
“I…” His eyes went down on her chest. Kate suddenly realized she was only wearing a robe, and she wore nothing beneath that. She had forgotten to wear decent clothes out of haste. And when she looked down to check, she panicked upon seeing that half of her breasts were exposed. She immediately fixed her robe and hugged herself. “I… I didn’t mean to—”
“I see.” The man sneered. “Someone sent you here.”
Kate’s brows furrowed.
“W-what? N-no!” Was he expecting someone? “You must have mistaken me for someone else. I just… I just got lost. I am really sorry, S-sir.”
She lowered her head. Kate knew it was rude to trespass, but the room seemed unoccupied by any guests a while ago.
“You will get paid doing this. Might as well let me enjoy what he paid for.” He arrogantly cocked his head to the side. “Take off your robe.”
Kate did not know how to react, but her eyes were wide open. Soon, fear started to creep into her system. She escaped from her tragic fate in the claws of that old businessman only to end up in a lion’s den.
“I told you, I was lost. I… I didn’t—” Kate shrieked when he pulled her close to him.
His strong arm wrapped around her waist. “I don’t believe you.”
Now that they were that close, Kate could smell whisky on his hot breath that fanned her face. She could not explain why her body managed to feel something ticklish crawling up and down her spine despite her fear. Kate’s body must be malfunctioning if it was even possible. He was a stranger, for heaven’s sake!
She propped her hands on his chest when he tried to kiss her.
“B-believe it or not, no one sent me here. I must… I must leave, so please… let me go.”
His eyes laid on her, and she was immediately caught in his dark pupils of unknown depth. Kate started to feel an uncontrollable tremor in her body at that moment. At the back of her mind, she heard a siren, indicating that there was danger ahead. But her body seemed to be frozen; she could not move an inch. The next thing she knew, he was carrying her out of the bathroom.
“H-hey, what are you doing?” she exclaimed as soon as he lay her down on the bed.
Kate fought like a wild cat, trying to scratch and kick him. But her strength was no match to his. She found herself pinned on the bed beneath his body. Kate’s hands were stretched above her head, and her legs were held down by his.
She started sobbing. So, that was her fate, to be devoured helplessly…
JAN attended the banquet because he had an important business. But things did not go on smoothly, which annoyed him. He could not convince Mr. Abel to sign cooperation with their company no matter what he did to persuade him. So, Jan left the banquet early and went to the hotel’s bar and drank a few glasses of whisky until he was tipsy. Minutes before heading up to his suite, he called Daniel, his annoying friend, to inform him of his failure. He said that a surprise awaits him in his suite to cheer him up. That was why when he saw the woman inside the bathroom suite, he jumped at her like a lion to his prey. Jan was so ready to spend a night of ecstasy with his present. But when he brought her to his bed, the woman started crying. That was when he realized that she was not the kind of woman he expected her to be. Jan held the woman’s chin that made her flinch. “Who are you?” he asked with a deep knot on his forehead. He did not get any response from
KATE’s mouth suddenly became watery as she stared at the food on the table. She never thought she would have the chance again to taste such delicious cuisines. All thanks to Jan, who ordered food after hearing her stomach rumbled. “Dig in,” Jan told her and left the table with his phone on his ear again. He was such a busy man, Kate mused. Jan kept receiving and making calls. Some were work-related, but most calls were from reporters. She did not expect that the video scandal would be that big in just a few hours. She heaved a sigh and picked up the utensils. There was nothing she could do about the scandal. What she was worried about was her Aunt Bernice. Now that she had a scandal with Jan, who happened to be the son of a well-known family, it was obvious that it would also affect her. But unlike Jan, she knew that the damage on her part would not be as big as his. Kate sliced a generous size of the steak and popped it into her mouth. Then she took
“MADAM, the Sir wants to know if you are done,” Rose asked behind the bathroom’s closed door. “He is waiting for you in the lobby.Kate pulled up the neckline of her dress once more. She was raised in a conservative family. Wearing a sophisticated dress that revealed half of her breast made her a little uncomfortable.“Y-yes, I’m coming.” She covered herself with a shawl that she saw in one of the paper bags Rose brought last time. It was not really part of the dress, but the color was somewhat bearable since white blends well with other colors.Rose was smiling at her when she opened the door.“I will escort you to the car, Madam.” Rose strode towards the main door and opened it for her.She grabbed her pouch from the side table and went out of the hotel suite. That day was her wedding day.Even though Jan’s mother threw a fit at the banquet a week ago, he managed to arrange
JAN left her to the master’s bedroom after unpacking his luggage. He got an important call from she did not know who. Kate did not bother to ask. She knew she had no right to stick her nose on his affairs, especially when their marriage was nothing but on papers. But then, Jan demanded that they consummate it so his mother would not suspect. Was she ready for that? Kate did not know. She heaved a sigh and started unpacking her luggage. Kate could not help but grimace as she took the clothes out of the suitcase one by one. She did not own a single thing inside that suitcase, so she did not know if she could really call them her own.“Jan bought all of these. We’re married,” she told herself for consolation. With her clothes in her hands, Kate sauntered to the walk-in closet.Jan told her that she could use half of it. But now that she saw it, she doubted she could use the half because his clothes took up almost three-fourths of the
KATE stayed awake for a couple of hours, waiting for her husband to come back. But Jan did not return to the masters’ bedroom that night. She just thought that he slept in another room. His mansion was big enough; there were a lot of rooms for just the two of them.It was already dawn when she woke up to the creaking sound of the closet. She knew it was him, but she did not leave the bed nor talk to him. Kate pretended to be asleep. She did not open her eyes even though she felt the cushion move.“I know your awake, Katherine,” said Jan.Her body shivered with just the sound of his voice. It was as if his voice had hands touching her.Damn it…Perhaps it was the after-effect of what happened between them last night.Kate opened her eyes when she felt his hand caressing her side. She looked at him straight in the eyes and immediately got lost in them. She could not help but wonder… why were his eyes ha
“JAN, can we talk?” Kate said as soon as his mother went up the stairs.“Sure.”He tugged her to the study room. She heaved a deep sigh and made sure that the door was locked before turning in Jan’s direction.“I don’t like what you told your mother. She already doesn’t like me as your wife, and now….” Kate breathed exasperatedly. “You made me feel like… I’m one of your… whatever you call those women.”He raised a brow.“I’m sorry if I have offended you.” He cleared his throat and sauntered toward the swivel chair. “I don’t know what to tell her to drive her away because I don’t usually do that, you know.”“I… I’ll try to adjust,” she told him.“Well… that’s good.” Jan sat and clasped his hands. “Maybe you and Mom will learn to like each ot
“WHERE the hell have you been, Katherine?” Jan grasped her arm the moment he saw her inside the elevator. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere—” He seemed to notice her hand was hiding something on her chest, so he pulled her hand away. His eyes widened when he saw the cigarette burn at the top of her breast. “What happened?” Jan’s tone changed; it was gentler with a hint of worry.“I… I—”“Who did this to you?” he said through greeted teeth. He fixed his coat around her shoulder and ushered her out of the elevator.“Jan, w-where are we going?” she asked when she noticed that they were already heading out of the hotel.“Where do you think? Of course, I’ll get you to the hospital to get you treated.”He threw his key to the valet when they finally got out. After a few moments, the car arrived.“Hop in,” he orde
WITH her eyes still closed, Kate’s hands searched the other side of the bed and found out that her husband was not there anymore. She heaved a deep sigh and sat up. It was always like that; she would wake up without him beside her and sleep first at night because he was always busy with paperwork and business calls. She wondered if he was able to get a decent sleep, or if he ever ate on time… or when could he have time to perform that marital duty that they should have done a long time ago. It was kind of disappointing that they did not even have this thing called honeymoon. Kate shook her head when that thought crossed her mind. What was she thinking? Her fantasies would not come to life if their marriage was just nothing but a piece of paper. Could it be that he has a problem with…? But no… Jan touched her one night, and his mother said he had slept with lots of women. Then why would he not do the same thing with her? She was his lawfully wedded wife, after
JAN checked in at the same hotel where his brother was staying. He emptied the envelope the moment they got it and looked at its content one by one. He caressed his chin and looked at her afterwards. “When did you get all of these, Katherine?” “Steel delivered them to me before your dad died. I… I decided to keep it hidden at my family’s ancestral house in the meantime.” “And are you carrying them now? Are you going to give them to my brother?” “No…” Kate shook her head and clasped her hands. “Winona called me. She told me there’s a possibility that you’ll come here to see your brother. And she was right… I have it with me because… I want to show it to you in front of your brother and—” “You don’t have to do that, Katherine.” Jan rose from his seat and sauntered towards her. he held her by the arms and looked at her straight in the eyes. “What’s between Fernan and me will remain between us. I don’t want you to involve yourself with that. Do yo
KATE was biting her nail anxiously as she paced back and forth in the living room.“Dear, could you please stop doing that? I’m starting to get dizzy seeing you pacing like that,” Nana Talia told her and sighed. She even lightly hit her leg with her cane.“I can’t help it, Nana… I’m worried why Angelique and Mom still haven’t arrived here at this hour!” She was almost hysterical when she said that. “Their plane landed at ten this morning. It was already two in the afternoon!”“Then why don’t you call Madam Martina and ask her where they are now instead of worrying here?” Her nanny leaned against her seat and massaged her forehead. “You’re not just making my head dizzy. Now it throbs.”“Right.” Kate fished her phone frantically from her pocket and called Jan’s mother. The other line kept ringing until she heard the operator say th
KATE was cooking fried rice in the kitchen when her nanny came in from the backdoor. She was followed by the cook, who carried the freshly picked crops from the vegetable garden. The cook rushed to her immediately. “Madam, you should’ve—”“No, it’s alright.” She flashed a smile and continued mixing the fried rice in the wok.Her nanny went beside her and nudged her to the side.“Your aura’s looking exceptionally happy today, dear. Did something good happen?” asked Nana Talia.“Well…” Kate turned off the stove. “Jan finally came out of the guestroom, and he requested some fried rice for breakfast, so I cooked for him.”“Oh!” Her nanny’s eyes glowed. “You did it, Kate! It worked!” Nana Talia tapped her back. “Well done, dear.”“Thank you, Nana.”She poured the fried rice into a bowl and
JAN’s mother decided to hold a one-day funeral for his father. After that, he was taken to his final resting place. Fernan did not show up, and Kate only heard from Winona that he had been locking himself inside his hotel suite and would not talk to anyone. She knew what he did was wrong, but then… she could not help but worry about him. Fernan’s situation was not easy, and there was a possibility that his mental state was at stake. She wanted to check on him, but a lot of reasons were holding her back. In the end, Kate decided not to see him and just wait until their paths crossed again. And as for her husband, Jan was another problem. He had been locking himself inside the guestroom. He has barely eaten a decent meal since his dad died and only filled his stomach with different liquors his hand would have a hold. The Villamar brother’s coping mechanism was too far from their mother’s. After her husband’s funeral, Madam Martina went on a vacatio
KATE was at the venue of their company’s commercial shoot that day. She left her phone in the car and eventually forgot to get it, for she was too occupied with supervising the shoot.“Is it alright if we retake that one? I think it will look better if we take the shot from the left angle. What do you think?” she told the director.“Oh, Katherine! You do have a good eye!” the director said after taking another look at the video they shot. “Let’s roll another take of this one.”The director immediately prepared for another shoot. She sat on a bench as she waited for the shoot to happen. That was when her secretary came to her, rushing.“Is there something wrong?” Bianca handed her her phone. “A call from your in-laws’ residence, Ma’am. It’s urgent.”“Hello…” Kate said nervously. Could it be that something happened to her husband again?
KATE hid the file folder in her family’s ancestral home before going to Jan’s parents’ place. She had to hide it somewhere far from everyone who must not see it in the meantime. She must keep the secret until the right opportunity to tell everyone comes. His family had been through a lot lately; she did not have the heart to add another problem. She dipped herself in the bathtub while enjoying a bottle of champagne, hoping that it would relax her mind and body. It was her only escape since she could not go somewhere far away to unwind.“This is one of the things that I miss about you.”Her gaze reverted to the door when she heard Jan’s voice. She found him leaning against the doorframe. His eyes were glistening with admiration as though she was the most beautiful woman in the world.“If you’re going to join me for a bath, please turn off the light.” She took a huge gulp of champagne.“And
KATE sipped her wine as she sat on the bench in the garden. She went there after putting her daughter to sleep. She thought some fresh air would help her feel sleepy, but it did not do much.“I told you, you should join me in bed from now on,” Jan said as he sat down beside her.“And then I’ll keep running back to Angelique before she wakes up in the morning? Nah.” She chugged down the remaining wine on her glass and put it down. “That set-up is hassle—”“Then perhaps you should teach her to sleep on her own….” He buried his face in her neck and sniffed her scent. “The bed feels so huge and lonely without you by my side.”Kate chuckled when she felt his tongue graze the sensitive flesh of her neck.“I didn’t know that your amnesia has this kind of—” He bit her neck. “Jan!”“Ssshhh…” He snaked his arm around he
SHE opened her eyes when she felt butterfly kisses showering her face. Kate smiled immediately when she saw it was Jan.“Good morning,” he said and kissed her deeply afterwards. Her brows furrowed when she realized that her husband was acting as though they did not argue last night. Was he too drunk last night and he did not know what he was doing? Did he already forget about it?“Tell me… have you forgotten what happened last night?”“Which of the two?” he countered.Kate pressed her lips firmly. Ah, it seemed that he did not forget about everything.Jan sat up and leaned against the headboard. He looked down at her, and his fingers started creating circles at her bosom. Kate closed her eyes and moaned softly. What he was doing was already arousing… for her.“I had a dream last night,” Jan said after a while.“About what?” She did not take her eyes off h
KATE stood by the foyer with her eyes fixed in the direction of the gate. She was waiting for Jan to come home. He left before sunset when she had just arrived from work. Jan did not mention where he would go, and she did not dare ask. But now, Kate’s anxiety was tearing her apart. She feared that her husband would not come back just like the last time.“Katherine?”She turned behind her and saw Jan’s mother walking in her direction.“Mom.” She managed to flash a smile.“What are you doing here, hmm?” Her mother-in-law caressed her arm.“I’m waiting for Jan, Mom.” Kate heaved a sigh and turned in the direction of the doorway again. “He left this afternoon and… I don’t know where he is.”“Jan told me he’s going to meet Winona.”She suddenly felt a pang of jealousy in her chest. Jan did not even remember his feelings for her. Wha
