JAN attended the banquet because he had an important business. But things did not go on smoothly, which annoyed him. He could not convince Mr. Abel to sign cooperation with their company no matter what he did to persuade him. So, Jan left the banquet early and went to the hotel’s bar and drank a few glasses of whisky until he was tipsy. Minutes before heading up to his suite, he called Daniel, his annoying friend, to inform him of his failure. He said that a surprise awaits him in his suite to cheer him up. That was why when he saw the woman inside the bathroom suite, he jumped at her like a lion to his prey. Jan was so ready to spend a night of ecstasy with his present.
But when he brought her to his bed, the woman started crying. That was when he realized that she was not the kind of woman he expected her to be.
Jan held the woman’s chin that made her flinch.
“Who are you?” he asked with a deep knot on his forehead.
He did not get any response from her this time, which started to annoy him. Then, his phone buzzed. Jan moved away from the woman with his gaze still fixed on her. He then picked his phone from the table and answered his brother’s call.
“Fernan—”
“What the hell are you doing there?!”
Jan raised a brow. His little brother sounded furious on the other line. Perhaps his mother had already heard the news that he had failed.
“Look, I did try my best to persuade Mr. Abel, okay? But he—”
“What? I am not talking about business here, brother! I am talking about you destroying our family’s good reputation!” his brother cut him off.
“What the hell are you talking about, Fernan?” Jan heard his brother cussed in the background. “Damn it, can you please cut to the chase!”
“See for yourself, brother. I already sent you the link. You are now famous online.”
Jan took his phone away from his ear and opened his brother’s message. He immediately clicked the link, and he was directed on a video going viral on social media. To his astonishment, it was a video of him and the woman on his bed.
“Fuck,” he muttered.
He was filmed inside his hotel suite! He turned his gaze to the woman on his bed who was still sobbing.
“What are you gonna do now, brother? Mom is—”
“Call the IT department and tell them to take down the video. I will deal with Mom later.” Jan ended the call and pulled the woman up.
He showed her the video. She looked at him with wide eyes and an opened mouth.
“H-how—”
“Who are you?! Who the fuck sent you here?!” Jan tightly grasped the woman’s arm.
“Ouch, you are hurting me…” She tried to withdraw her arm, but there was no way he would let her escape.
KATE was shocked to see a video scandal of her with the stranger in that hotel suite. The scene happened just a while ago, and now it was posted online. How come? Was he a pervert or something?
“L-let me go…” she said in a hoarse voice.
“I am not letting you off the hook until this issue is settled,” the man said through gritted teeth.
“B-but I am innocent!” Kate insisted. “Why won’t you believe me—”
“Because I don’t even know you in the first place!” he snarled at her.
Now, her fear tripled. She was caught in a scandalous situation with a man she did not know. What awaits her after all of that?
Kate moved further away from him. She folded her legs and hugged them tightly.
“I swear to heaven that I am innocent. I only ended up here because I was trying to escape. Believe me, I don’t have intentions to harm you in any way…” Tears started to roll down Kate’s cheeks again. “I just… I just want to save myself.”
The man did not say a word. He just stood there and looked at her as if he could see through her.
A few moments later, the doorbell rang, followed by consecutive knocks at the door. The man then sauntered to the door and opened it. A group of security personnel started searching the entire suite.
“Sir Jan, I apologize for the damage this incident had caused you,” said the manager who arrived in the suite a little later.
Kate turned her gaze to the man whom the manager called Jan. So, that was his name.
Jan ran his fingers through his hair and breathed exasperatedly.
“How come I got filmed, Claire? Have you not checked my suite?” There was a hint of irritation in his voice.
The manager clasped her hands and lowered her head.
“I checked every nook and cranny of your suite, Sir Jan. Everything is clear before you enter the suite.” The manager then turned in her direction. “Who is she, Sir Jan?”
“I don’t know. Why don’t you start the investigation with her?” Jan folded his arms over his chest and arched a brow.
The manager strode towards the bed and pulled her up. “Did you—”
“I did nothing wrong! I…” Kate’s voice trailed off. No matter how many times she tried to explain why she was in there, it seemed that no one would believe her. It was no use.
“Katherine!”
Kate felt her whole body tremble when she heard Aunt Bernice’s voice inside the suite. Her aunt rushed inside and grabbed her.
“What are you doing here?! What have you done, you stupid—”
“Take your hands off her.”
To her surprised, Jan snatched her away from her aunt.
“This woman is my niece. I am taking her with me—”
“No one is taking this woman away until the investigation is done,” Jan said in a firm tone and beckoned one of the security personnel to come over. “Please escort this madam out of my suite,” he ordered.
“Wait! What?!” Aunt Bernice’s face turned red as the security dragged her out of the suite.
“Sir, we found the camera attached to the stereo,” the security informed Jan afterwards.
“We will run a fingerprint test if there is any and check all the CCTV footage. We will inform you as soon as we find a lead,” the manager told Jan before everyone exited the suite.
When Jan freed her, she plopped down on the carpeted floor. Kate’s legs felt like they were wanton. Now that Aunt Bernice had found her, she was sure her aunt was just around the corner, waiting for her.
“Is this your aunt’s doing, Katherine?”
She raised her head.
“Have you offended my aunt?” Kate asked, puzzled.
“Well…” Jan sat on the accent chair. “I have offended a lot of people, but I don’t think your aunt is one of them.”
“Then my aunt has nothing to do with this.” Kate sneered when she realized she had just defended Aunt Bernice. Perhaps she was still a good person who did not know how to hold a grudge. “Aunt Bernice has no time for this kind of plot because she’s busy hunting me down to sell me out to that Mr. Abel—”
“Mr. Abel?” he cut her off.
“Yes. My aunt was after Mr. Abel. I overheard her talking to my cousin on the phone that he wanted to have me in exchange for cooperation. The very reason why I ended up here in your suite. I was trying to escape, you know…” Kate hoped he would buy her alibi now.
Jan’s brows furrowed. “How did you manage to sneak inside my suite, anyway?”
“The door was open.”
“I am sure I locked the door before I leave for the banquet.” He caressed his chin. “Now, that was really suspicious.”
“Did my alibi check out?” Kate asked afterwards.
“I think so.”
She rose to her feet. “Then I should leave.”
“Are you sure you want to leave, Katherine?” asked Jan. His voice was gentler now. “You made your aunt’s blood boil. Do you think—”
“Would you help me then?” Kate did not know where her courage came from. Those words just escaped from her mouth.
He arched his brow and snorted. Jan did not look away as he leaned against his seat.
“It depends on you…” He propped a finger on the side of his forehead and chuckled.
Kate could not follow.
“W-what do you mean? Of course, I badly need help—”
“If you can pay the price, then I will help you.” Jan waved his other hand outwardly. “I don’t do favors, lady. I make deals…”
The firmness of his tone and his baritone voice made her shiver. Kate did not have the money to pay him, which she doubted he would ask from her. Jan looked like someone who belonged to the high society. He must have a lot of it.
Her hand clenched onto her robe when she noticed his gaze reverted to her chest, then down to the lower part of her body. Kate might be stupid, as what her aunt called her, but she was not that innocent. She was well-aware of such matter.
Jan stood up and sauntered towards her. He held her chin and looked at her straight in the eyes. She swallowed hard as she tried to remain calm. There was something in his gaze that made her feel… enchanting.
“I need your service, Katherine,” he drawled.
“Then…” She grabbed her robe’s tie and was about to pull it when his hand stopped her. “What are you doing?” she asked, puzzled. “I thought you want my service in exchange for helping me—”
“I don’t want a service this quick.” The corner of his lips twitched. “I want it to last for a long time.”
Her eyes grew wide as the realization hit her.
“Y-you want me to be your sex slave?”
Jan sneered and freed her afterwards. He strode towards the table and picked up his phone.
“It’s not what you think it is. As you can see, we are both caught up in this scandal. I’m a man who needs to protect my image and my family’s reputation. People on the internet will accuse me that I sleep with random girls during my stay in hotels. It will drive my mom crazy mad at me, you know. So, given your situation, I would like to offer you a deal.”
Kate slowly let out her breath she was not aware she had been holding.
“I am… really desperate. I don’t want to go back to that shabby attic in my aunt’s house. I am sick and tired of crying every single night. So, whatever you want me to do, I will do it.”
“I only know one way to get out of this mess. Marry me, Katherine.”
Her mouth dropped open.
“I—”
“What? Are you in a relationship?” Jan arched a brow.
“No, I’m not.”
“Good. We don’t have a problem then.” He dialed on his phone and brought the gadget to his ear. “Rose, I need your help. Could you please shop for this lady with me? Okay… Hm… I will send it to you later.”
Jan then turned to her, holding out his phone. She heard his camera shutter.
“Turn around, Katherine. I need to send photos of you to my assistant.”
KATE’s mouth suddenly became watery as she stared at the food on the table. She never thought she would have the chance again to taste such delicious cuisines. All thanks to Jan, who ordered food after hearing her stomach rumbled. “Dig in,” Jan told her and left the table with his phone on his ear again. He was such a busy man, Kate mused. Jan kept receiving and making calls. Some were work-related, but most calls were from reporters. She did not expect that the video scandal would be that big in just a few hours. She heaved a sigh and picked up the utensils. There was nothing she could do about the scandal. What she was worried about was her Aunt Bernice. Now that she had a scandal with Jan, who happened to be the son of a well-known family, it was obvious that it would also affect her. But unlike Jan, she knew that the damage on her part would not be as big as his. Kate sliced a generous size of the steak and popped it into her mouth. Then she took
“MADAM, the Sir wants to know if you are done,” Rose asked behind the bathroom’s closed door. “He is waiting for you in the lobby.Kate pulled up the neckline of her dress once more. She was raised in a conservative family. Wearing a sophisticated dress that revealed half of her breast made her a little uncomfortable.“Y-yes, I’m coming.” She covered herself with a shawl that she saw in one of the paper bags Rose brought last time. It was not really part of the dress, but the color was somewhat bearable since white blends well with other colors.Rose was smiling at her when she opened the door.“I will escort you to the car, Madam.” Rose strode towards the main door and opened it for her.She grabbed her pouch from the side table and went out of the hotel suite. That day was her wedding day.Even though Jan’s mother threw a fit at the banquet a week ago, he managed to arrange
JAN left her to the master’s bedroom after unpacking his luggage. He got an important call from she did not know who. Kate did not bother to ask. She knew she had no right to stick her nose on his affairs, especially when their marriage was nothing but on papers. But then, Jan demanded that they consummate it so his mother would not suspect. Was she ready for that? Kate did not know. She heaved a sigh and started unpacking her luggage. Kate could not help but grimace as she took the clothes out of the suitcase one by one. She did not own a single thing inside that suitcase, so she did not know if she could really call them her own.“Jan bought all of these. We’re married,” she told herself for consolation. With her clothes in her hands, Kate sauntered to the walk-in closet.Jan told her that she could use half of it. But now that she saw it, she doubted she could use the half because his clothes took up almost three-fourths of the
KATE stayed awake for a couple of hours, waiting for her husband to come back. But Jan did not return to the masters’ bedroom that night. She just thought that he slept in another room. His mansion was big enough; there were a lot of rooms for just the two of them.It was already dawn when she woke up to the creaking sound of the closet. She knew it was him, but she did not leave the bed nor talk to him. Kate pretended to be asleep. She did not open her eyes even though she felt the cushion move.“I know your awake, Katherine,” said Jan.Her body shivered with just the sound of his voice. It was as if his voice had hands touching her.Damn it…Perhaps it was the after-effect of what happened between them last night.Kate opened her eyes when she felt his hand caressing her side. She looked at him straight in the eyes and immediately got lost in them. She could not help but wonder… why were his eyes ha
“JAN, can we talk?” Kate said as soon as his mother went up the stairs.“Sure.”He tugged her to the study room. She heaved a deep sigh and made sure that the door was locked before turning in Jan’s direction.“I don’t like what you told your mother. She already doesn’t like me as your wife, and now….” Kate breathed exasperatedly. “You made me feel like… I’m one of your… whatever you call those women.”He raised a brow.“I’m sorry if I have offended you.” He cleared his throat and sauntered toward the swivel chair. “I don’t know what to tell her to drive her away because I don’t usually do that, you know.”“I… I’ll try to adjust,” she told him.“Well… that’s good.” Jan sat and clasped his hands. “Maybe you and Mom will learn to like each ot
“WHERE the hell have you been, Katherine?” Jan grasped her arm the moment he saw her inside the elevator. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere—” He seemed to notice her hand was hiding something on her chest, so he pulled her hand away. His eyes widened when he saw the cigarette burn at the top of her breast. “What happened?” Jan’s tone changed; it was gentler with a hint of worry.“I… I—”“Who did this to you?” he said through greeted teeth. He fixed his coat around her shoulder and ushered her out of the elevator.“Jan, w-where are we going?” she asked when she noticed that they were already heading out of the hotel.“Where do you think? Of course, I’ll get you to the hospital to get you treated.”He threw his key to the valet when they finally got out. After a few moments, the car arrived.“Hop in,” he orde
WITH her eyes still closed, Kate’s hands searched the other side of the bed and found out that her husband was not there anymore. She heaved a deep sigh and sat up. It was always like that; she would wake up without him beside her and sleep first at night because he was always busy with paperwork and business calls. She wondered if he was able to get a decent sleep, or if he ever ate on time… or when could he have time to perform that marital duty that they should have done a long time ago. It was kind of disappointing that they did not even have this thing called honeymoon. Kate shook her head when that thought crossed her mind. What was she thinking? Her fantasies would not come to life if their marriage was just nothing but a piece of paper. Could it be that he has a problem with…? But no… Jan touched her one night, and his mother said he had slept with lots of women. Then why would he not do the same thing with her? She was his lawfully wedded wife, after
JAN did not let go of her until they reached the administrator’s office. It was as if it was his way of marking his territory. That could have been so sweet if only their marriage was normal.A middle-aged woman greeted them when they got in.“Jan, I’m so happy to see you,” the woman said and smiled. “It’s been a long time since we last saw each other. When was it again?”“Oh, it was three years ago when I was the speaker.”“Oh, right! The graduation.” The woman turned in Kate’s direction afterwards. “So… I presume this beautiful lady here with you is the one you’re talking about.”“Yes. This is my wife, Katherine,” Jan introduced her.“Hi,” she nodded shyly.“Katherine, this is Mrs. De Luna. She is the university administrator and my aunt to my mother’s side of the family.”“Oh&hellip
JAN checked in at the same hotel where his brother was staying. He emptied the envelope the moment they got it and looked at its content one by one. He caressed his chin and looked at her afterwards. “When did you get all of these, Katherine?” “Steel delivered them to me before your dad died. I… I decided to keep it hidden at my family’s ancestral house in the meantime.” “And are you carrying them now? Are you going to give them to my brother?” “No…” Kate shook her head and clasped her hands. “Winona called me. She told me there’s a possibility that you’ll come here to see your brother. And she was right… I have it with me because… I want to show it to you in front of your brother and—” “You don’t have to do that, Katherine.” Jan rose from his seat and sauntered towards her. he held her by the arms and looked at her straight in the eyes. “What’s between Fernan and me will remain between us. I don’t want you to involve yourself with that. Do yo
KATE was biting her nail anxiously as she paced back and forth in the living room.“Dear, could you please stop doing that? I’m starting to get dizzy seeing you pacing like that,” Nana Talia told her and sighed. She even lightly hit her leg with her cane.“I can’t help it, Nana… I’m worried why Angelique and Mom still haven’t arrived here at this hour!” She was almost hysterical when she said that. “Their plane landed at ten this morning. It was already two in the afternoon!”“Then why don’t you call Madam Martina and ask her where they are now instead of worrying here?” Her nanny leaned against her seat and massaged her forehead. “You’re not just making my head dizzy. Now it throbs.”“Right.” Kate fished her phone frantically from her pocket and called Jan’s mother. The other line kept ringing until she heard the operator say th
KATE was cooking fried rice in the kitchen when her nanny came in from the backdoor. She was followed by the cook, who carried the freshly picked crops from the vegetable garden. The cook rushed to her immediately. “Madam, you should’ve—”“No, it’s alright.” She flashed a smile and continued mixing the fried rice in the wok.Her nanny went beside her and nudged her to the side.“Your aura’s looking exceptionally happy today, dear. Did something good happen?” asked Nana Talia.“Well…” Kate turned off the stove. “Jan finally came out of the guestroom, and he requested some fried rice for breakfast, so I cooked for him.”“Oh!” Her nanny’s eyes glowed. “You did it, Kate! It worked!” Nana Talia tapped her back. “Well done, dear.”“Thank you, Nana.”She poured the fried rice into a bowl and
JAN’s mother decided to hold a one-day funeral for his father. After that, he was taken to his final resting place. Fernan did not show up, and Kate only heard from Winona that he had been locking himself inside his hotel suite and would not talk to anyone. She knew what he did was wrong, but then… she could not help but worry about him. Fernan’s situation was not easy, and there was a possibility that his mental state was at stake. She wanted to check on him, but a lot of reasons were holding her back. In the end, Kate decided not to see him and just wait until their paths crossed again. And as for her husband, Jan was another problem. He had been locking himself inside the guestroom. He has barely eaten a decent meal since his dad died and only filled his stomach with different liquors his hand would have a hold. The Villamar brother’s coping mechanism was too far from their mother’s. After her husband’s funeral, Madam Martina went on a vacatio
KATE was at the venue of their company’s commercial shoot that day. She left her phone in the car and eventually forgot to get it, for she was too occupied with supervising the shoot.“Is it alright if we retake that one? I think it will look better if we take the shot from the left angle. What do you think?” she told the director.“Oh, Katherine! You do have a good eye!” the director said after taking another look at the video they shot. “Let’s roll another take of this one.”The director immediately prepared for another shoot. She sat on a bench as she waited for the shoot to happen. That was when her secretary came to her, rushing.“Is there something wrong?” Bianca handed her her phone. “A call from your in-laws’ residence, Ma’am. It’s urgent.”“Hello…” Kate said nervously. Could it be that something happened to her husband again?
KATE hid the file folder in her family’s ancestral home before going to Jan’s parents’ place. She had to hide it somewhere far from everyone who must not see it in the meantime. She must keep the secret until the right opportunity to tell everyone comes. His family had been through a lot lately; she did not have the heart to add another problem. She dipped herself in the bathtub while enjoying a bottle of champagne, hoping that it would relax her mind and body. It was her only escape since she could not go somewhere far away to unwind.“This is one of the things that I miss about you.”Her gaze reverted to the door when she heard Jan’s voice. She found him leaning against the doorframe. His eyes were glistening with admiration as though she was the most beautiful woman in the world.“If you’re going to join me for a bath, please turn off the light.” She took a huge gulp of champagne.“And
KATE sipped her wine as she sat on the bench in the garden. She went there after putting her daughter to sleep. She thought some fresh air would help her feel sleepy, but it did not do much.“I told you, you should join me in bed from now on,” Jan said as he sat down beside her.“And then I’ll keep running back to Angelique before she wakes up in the morning? Nah.” She chugged down the remaining wine on her glass and put it down. “That set-up is hassle—”“Then perhaps you should teach her to sleep on her own….” He buried his face in her neck and sniffed her scent. “The bed feels so huge and lonely without you by my side.”Kate chuckled when she felt his tongue graze the sensitive flesh of her neck.“I didn’t know that your amnesia has this kind of—” He bit her neck. “Jan!”“Ssshhh…” He snaked his arm around he
SHE opened her eyes when she felt butterfly kisses showering her face. Kate smiled immediately when she saw it was Jan.“Good morning,” he said and kissed her deeply afterwards. Her brows furrowed when she realized that her husband was acting as though they did not argue last night. Was he too drunk last night and he did not know what he was doing? Did he already forget about it?“Tell me… have you forgotten what happened last night?”“Which of the two?” he countered.Kate pressed her lips firmly. Ah, it seemed that he did not forget about everything.Jan sat up and leaned against the headboard. He looked down at her, and his fingers started creating circles at her bosom. Kate closed her eyes and moaned softly. What he was doing was already arousing… for her.“I had a dream last night,” Jan said after a while.“About what?” She did not take her eyes off h
KATE stood by the foyer with her eyes fixed in the direction of the gate. She was waiting for Jan to come home. He left before sunset when she had just arrived from work. Jan did not mention where he would go, and she did not dare ask. But now, Kate’s anxiety was tearing her apart. She feared that her husband would not come back just like the last time.“Katherine?”She turned behind her and saw Jan’s mother walking in her direction.“Mom.” She managed to flash a smile.“What are you doing here, hmm?” Her mother-in-law caressed her arm.“I’m waiting for Jan, Mom.” Kate heaved a sigh and turned in the direction of the doorway again. “He left this afternoon and… I don’t know where he is.”“Jan told me he’s going to meet Winona.”She suddenly felt a pang of jealousy in her chest. Jan did not even remember his feelings for her. Wha
