KATE’s mouth suddenly became watery as she stared at the food on the table. She never thought she would have the chance again to taste such delicious cuisines. All thanks to Jan, who ordered food after hearing her stomach rumbled.
“Dig in,” Jan told her and left the table with his phone on his ear again.
He was such a busy man, Kate mused. Jan kept receiving and making calls. Some were work-related, but most calls were from reporters. She did not expect that the video scandal would be that big in just a few hours.
She heaved a sigh and picked up the utensils. There was nothing she could do about the scandal. What she was worried about was her Aunt Bernice. Now that she had a scandal with Jan, who happened to be the son of a well-known family, it was obvious that it would also affect her. But unlike Jan, she knew that the damage on her part would not be as big as his.
Kate sliced a generous size of the steak and popped it into her mouth. Then she took a mouthful of spaghetti Aglio e olio. She could not help but close her eyes as the savory taste spread inside, making her taste buds work. Jan turned his gaze in her direction when a loud slurping sound escaped from her mouth. She immediately felt her cheeks burn out of embarrassment, making her head turn in the opposite direction. Kate silently cussed and reminded herself to act as refined as she could.
“I’ll call you again,” Jan said as he sauntered towards the table.
She grabbed the table napkin and wiped her mouth.
“You barely touch your food.” He sat on the chair he left a while ago and poured wine into their glasses. “I’m sorry if I didn’t order the food according to your liking—”
“I like them all.” She bit her lip when she realized that she just cut him off. “I’m sorry. I should have let you finish…”
“Katherine, I know we just met. We have this strange deal out of this scandalous situation. But I’d like you to know that you don’t have to be pretentious when I’m around.” Jan brought the wine glass to his mouth and took a sip.
Kate’s mouth formed an O. She wondered how come he knew she was pretentious in front of him. Well, since he already said that she could be herself, then she will.
“Fine.” She picked her wine glass but only held it near her mouth. “Since you want me to be me, may I make some demands?”
He arched a brow. “Demands?”
“Yes.” Jan caressed his chin as he stared at her. “I have lots of them.”
“Well… I think it’s better to talk about it now. Go on, tell me what you want.”
“My parents died in a plane crash two years ago. They left a bunch of assets that my aunt sold without giving me a single penny. She said she used the money to save my family’s business from bankruptcy. Can you help me get those assets and the company back?”
His brows furrowed. “How come your aunt was able to sell your inheritance?”
“Sadly, I was young and naïve, plus I was grieving back then. When Aunt Bernice offered me her help… I thought she was genuine because she was my father’s sister. But then, it turned out she has a motive.” Kate heaved a deep sigh. Now she realized, the more she thinks about it, the more it stresses her out.
“I won’t promise you anything, but I’ll see what I can do.”
“Thank you,” she muttered.
“You shouldn’t thank me, Katherine. I’m not doing this for free…” Jan sipped his wine without breaking eye contact. “Remember, we had a deal.”
“So, we’re business partners, huh?” Kate put her glass down.
Jan smiled lopsidedly. “Sort of.”
And then, there was silence.
Kate hated it. The silence between them was starting to make her feel awkward. She wanted to break it, but then, she did not know what to say anymore. It was like the cat got her tongue. But thanks to the doorbell, the silence did not last long.
“That must be Rose,” Jan said as he rose from his seat to open the door.
She stood up too and followed him.
“Sir,” a sophisticated woman greeted Jan when the door opened.
“Rose, this is my fiancée, Katherine,” Jan said and gestured in her direction. “Katherine, meet my assistant, Rose.”
Kate felt her bile went up straight to her chest when she heard him addressed her as his fiancée. Her mind still could not process that she now has a fiancé. She just hoped that she would not regret saying yes to that deal.
“H-hi…” She stretched her hand to Rose for a handshake that the latter accepted.
“Come in, Rose.” Jan opened the door wider.
His assistant came in, followed by an entourage of males and females dressed in a fine suit carrying not less than five paper bags each. Kate could only gape as she watched them put the paper bags on the floor one by one.
“I brought everything that you asked for, Sir,” Rose said with a smile plastered on her face, then turned in her direction. “Bags, shoes, clothes, makeups, accessories, jewelry, toiletries are all here.”
She looked at Jan and the paper bags back and forth.
“T-this is too much, isn’t it?” Kate blurted out when she turned her gaze to Rose.
“Hmm… not really.” Rose picked a paper bag with the logo of a famous clothing line. She then fished two dresses with the same color and design. “I was not sure if the small size would fit her, so I bought small and medium-size clothes. I picked the designs according to the latest trends and likings of most women nowadays. But if the madam doesn’t like them, we can change—”
“It looks great, Rose. It’s… perfect,” Kate said, though the dress was way too sophisticated for her. But then, she did not want to cause the woman more trouble.
Rose’s face lightened. “I’m glad you liked it.”
“Is that her dress for tomorrow’s banquet?” Jan chimed in.
“Yes, Sir.” Rose turned in his direction. “And speaking of the banquet, I already arranged everything. That will be at lunchtime tomorrow in this hotel, for your convenience.”
Kate cupped her forehead and plopped down on the couch when she suddenly felt dizzy. Everything was overwhelming.
“Are you okay, Madam?” Rose immediately got a glass of water and handed it to her.
“Thanks, Rose… I’m fine.”
“Maybe it’s time for you to rest, Katherine,” Jan said and gave Rose a nod.
Rose beckoned the others to leave.
“I’ll call you tomorrow to give you an update regarding the matters,” Rose told her boss before she left the suite.
“Why don’t you change to sleepwear first so you can sleep comfortably?” Jan started to put the paper bags to the side. “You can sleep on the bed.”
“H-how about you?”
“Bed.”
“Wait, what?” Her eyes widened. She was hoping that he would sleep on the couch or get another suite.
“What?” He straightened his back. “It’s a king-sized bed. It’s too big for both of us. And besides, you should get used to it. Soon you will be my wife. Don’t expect that we’ll sleep in separate rooms.”
“I-isn’t it a marriage just by the contract?”
“Did I tell you that I don’t like hassles?” He ran his fingers through his hair.
“No, you don’t.”
“Well, now you know.” He sauntered to the bathroom. “If you’re not going to bathe, I’ll go first.”
KATE felt like she was about to lose her breath. If only she would not look dumb, she would ask Jan to get her an oxygen tank and bring it to the banquet. No matter how many times she swallowed hard, she could not get that lump out of her throat.
“W-who are the guests?” she asked nervously as they walked to the hallway going to the banquet hall. Jan, who was walking ahead of her, turned to face her. Kate did not expect it, so she immediately bumped into him. “I-I’m sorry…”
She raised her head to look at him.
“Don’t be nervous. This will be quick.” He fished something from his pocket. It was a small purple velvet box. There was no need to ask what was inside. “Wear this ring.”
Jan opened the velvet box. But even before he could pull the ring out of it, Kate grabbed the ring and put it on her finger. When she turned at him again, he just looked at her with an arched brow. She just hoped what she did was not too much to infuriate him. After all, he was the one who said not to be pretentious. Well, it was the real Katherine.
“Shall we?” he said afterwards and gestured to the door in front of them.
“Hm…”
He caught her hand and entwined their fingers. Kate did not complain, for they needed to convince everyone that they were engaged in a romantic relationship.
She took a deep breath when the doors opened. Camera flashes and whispers echoing the banquet hall greeted them. Such exposure made Kate anxious even more. Since she was young, she used to be a wallflower in every event, always watching from the sidelines. And now, she got the spotlight overnight. How lucky she would be if only it was a fairytale story.
Jan ushered her to the front, and they climbed up to the makeshift stage. Cameras kept flashing as they stood next to each other at the center of the stage.
“Try to smile,” he whispered to her ear.
But Kate failed to fake a smile when she felt his palm touching the bare skin of her back.
“Are you two dating?” one reporter asked.
“Is she the same girl you are with in the viral video?” another one followed.
“Is she a fling, or you have plans to—”
Jan beckoned the reporters to stop asking questions. And just like that, a silence ensued, as if he did magic.
Kate looked up at him. She wondered what kind of man Jan was when it comes to women for the reporters to throw him such questions. It was kinda rude, she thought. She believed that someone must keep such matters private. Not because you are someone who was of the public’s interest, you owe them.
“With regards to the viral video incident, we are still investigating the matter. I won’t stop until we find who’s behind it. As for Katherine and I…” Jan paused and looked at her. “We’re taken aback that the incident happened in the middle of celebrating our engagement.”
“If she is really your fiancée, then why did you hide your relationship—”
“When it comes to the matters of the heart, I prefer to keep it private.” He wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her closer to him.
A middle-aged woman from the front row table stood up.
“What on earth is the meaning of this, Jan?”
“Mom, you’re here.”
She felt his hand tightened on her side.
“You’re marrying that woman without even consulting me? Seriously?”
Jan looked to the left side of the banquet hall and briskly nodded at someone. When Kate turned her gaze in the same direction, she saw his assistant Rose, who immediately moved and instructed the security to usher the reporters and guests out of the hall, leaving four people behind—Jan, his mother, a man who seemed to be his brother, and her.
“You cannot marry that girl,” his mother said authoritatively. “I don’t know who she is and where the hell she came from. How dare you decline those fine ladies I know just to marry someone like her!”
“My fiancée has a name. It’s Katherine,” Jan said in a firm tone that surprised her.
“MADAM, the Sir wants to know if you are done,” Rose asked behind the bathroom’s closed door. “He is waiting for you in the lobby.Kate pulled up the neckline of her dress once more. She was raised in a conservative family. Wearing a sophisticated dress that revealed half of her breast made her a little uncomfortable.“Y-yes, I’m coming.” She covered herself with a shawl that she saw in one of the paper bags Rose brought last time. It was not really part of the dress, but the color was somewhat bearable since white blends well with other colors.Rose was smiling at her when she opened the door.“I will escort you to the car, Madam.” Rose strode towards the main door and opened it for her.She grabbed her pouch from the side table and went out of the hotel suite. That day was her wedding day.Even though Jan’s mother threw a fit at the banquet a week ago, he managed to arrange
JAN left her to the master’s bedroom after unpacking his luggage. He got an important call from she did not know who. Kate did not bother to ask. She knew she had no right to stick her nose on his affairs, especially when their marriage was nothing but on papers. But then, Jan demanded that they consummate it so his mother would not suspect. Was she ready for that? Kate did not know. She heaved a sigh and started unpacking her luggage. Kate could not help but grimace as she took the clothes out of the suitcase one by one. She did not own a single thing inside that suitcase, so she did not know if she could really call them her own.“Jan bought all of these. We’re married,” she told herself for consolation. With her clothes in her hands, Kate sauntered to the walk-in closet.Jan told her that she could use half of it. But now that she saw it, she doubted she could use the half because his clothes took up almost three-fourths of the
KATE stayed awake for a couple of hours, waiting for her husband to come back. But Jan did not return to the masters’ bedroom that night. She just thought that he slept in another room. His mansion was big enough; there were a lot of rooms for just the two of them.It was already dawn when she woke up to the creaking sound of the closet. She knew it was him, but she did not leave the bed nor talk to him. Kate pretended to be asleep. She did not open her eyes even though she felt the cushion move.“I know your awake, Katherine,” said Jan.Her body shivered with just the sound of his voice. It was as if his voice had hands touching her.Damn it…Perhaps it was the after-effect of what happened between them last night.Kate opened her eyes when she felt his hand caressing her side. She looked at him straight in the eyes and immediately got lost in them. She could not help but wonder… why were his eyes ha
“JAN, can we talk?” Kate said as soon as his mother went up the stairs.“Sure.”He tugged her to the study room. She heaved a deep sigh and made sure that the door was locked before turning in Jan’s direction.“I don’t like what you told your mother. She already doesn’t like me as your wife, and now….” Kate breathed exasperatedly. “You made me feel like… I’m one of your… whatever you call those women.”He raised a brow.“I’m sorry if I have offended you.” He cleared his throat and sauntered toward the swivel chair. “I don’t know what to tell her to drive her away because I don’t usually do that, you know.”“I… I’ll try to adjust,” she told him.“Well… that’s good.” Jan sat and clasped his hands. “Maybe you and Mom will learn to like each ot
“WHERE the hell have you been, Katherine?” Jan grasped her arm the moment he saw her inside the elevator. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere—” He seemed to notice her hand was hiding something on her chest, so he pulled her hand away. His eyes widened when he saw the cigarette burn at the top of her breast. “What happened?” Jan’s tone changed; it was gentler with a hint of worry.“I… I—”“Who did this to you?” he said through greeted teeth. He fixed his coat around her shoulder and ushered her out of the elevator.“Jan, w-where are we going?” she asked when she noticed that they were already heading out of the hotel.“Where do you think? Of course, I’ll get you to the hospital to get you treated.”He threw his key to the valet when they finally got out. After a few moments, the car arrived.“Hop in,” he orde
WITH her eyes still closed, Kate’s hands searched the other side of the bed and found out that her husband was not there anymore. She heaved a deep sigh and sat up. It was always like that; she would wake up without him beside her and sleep first at night because he was always busy with paperwork and business calls. She wondered if he was able to get a decent sleep, or if he ever ate on time… or when could he have time to perform that marital duty that they should have done a long time ago. It was kind of disappointing that they did not even have this thing called honeymoon. Kate shook her head when that thought crossed her mind. What was she thinking? Her fantasies would not come to life if their marriage was just nothing but a piece of paper. Could it be that he has a problem with…? But no… Jan touched her one night, and his mother said he had slept with lots of women. Then why would he not do the same thing with her? She was his lawfully wedded wife, after
JAN did not let go of her until they reached the administrator’s office. It was as if it was his way of marking his territory. That could have been so sweet if only their marriage was normal.A middle-aged woman greeted them when they got in.“Jan, I’m so happy to see you,” the woman said and smiled. “It’s been a long time since we last saw each other. When was it again?”“Oh, it was three years ago when I was the speaker.”“Oh, right! The graduation.” The woman turned in Kate’s direction afterwards. “So… I presume this beautiful lady here with you is the one you’re talking about.”“Yes. This is my wife, Katherine,” Jan introduced her.“Hi,” she nodded shyly.“Katherine, this is Mrs. De Luna. She is the university administrator and my aunt to my mother’s side of the family.”“Oh&hellip
NANA Talia, standing in the foyer, rushed to her as soon as she got out of the car. She hugged her tightly and cried. “I was so worried about you. Thank God, you’re home now.” Her nanny sniffled as she caressed her back. Kate heaved a sigh and hugged her nanny back. Now she really felt bad about what happened, and she promised herself not to make the same mistake… ever again. “I-I’m so sorry, Nana.” Her nanny moved away a bit and cupped her face. “This isn’t you, Kate. Tell me, what happened?” She scratched the side of her neck and glanced at Jan, who was just standing a few steps away from them, silent. “Remember my friend Natalie?” she said afterward. “I met her again… at my new school. She happened to transfer there as well. And you know her, right? She’s a party girl, and… uhm… she brought me to this resto-bar to celebrate our mini-reunion,” Kate explained a little louder so Jan could hear what she said. Nana Talia
JAN checked in at the same hotel where his brother was staying. He emptied the envelope the moment they got it and looked at its content one by one. He caressed his chin and looked at her afterwards. “When did you get all of these, Katherine?” “Steel delivered them to me before your dad died. I… I decided to keep it hidden at my family’s ancestral house in the meantime.” “And are you carrying them now? Are you going to give them to my brother?” “No…” Kate shook her head and clasped her hands. “Winona called me. She told me there’s a possibility that you’ll come here to see your brother. And she was right… I have it with me because… I want to show it to you in front of your brother and—” “You don’t have to do that, Katherine.” Jan rose from his seat and sauntered towards her. he held her by the arms and looked at her straight in the eyes. “What’s between Fernan and me will remain between us. I don’t want you to involve yourself with that. Do yo
KATE was biting her nail anxiously as she paced back and forth in the living room.“Dear, could you please stop doing that? I’m starting to get dizzy seeing you pacing like that,” Nana Talia told her and sighed. She even lightly hit her leg with her cane.“I can’t help it, Nana… I’m worried why Angelique and Mom still haven’t arrived here at this hour!” She was almost hysterical when she said that. “Their plane landed at ten this morning. It was already two in the afternoon!”“Then why don’t you call Madam Martina and ask her where they are now instead of worrying here?” Her nanny leaned against her seat and massaged her forehead. “You’re not just making my head dizzy. Now it throbs.”“Right.” Kate fished her phone frantically from her pocket and called Jan’s mother. The other line kept ringing until she heard the operator say th
KATE was cooking fried rice in the kitchen when her nanny came in from the backdoor. She was followed by the cook, who carried the freshly picked crops from the vegetable garden. The cook rushed to her immediately. “Madam, you should’ve—”“No, it’s alright.” She flashed a smile and continued mixing the fried rice in the wok.Her nanny went beside her and nudged her to the side.“Your aura’s looking exceptionally happy today, dear. Did something good happen?” asked Nana Talia.“Well…” Kate turned off the stove. “Jan finally came out of the guestroom, and he requested some fried rice for breakfast, so I cooked for him.”“Oh!” Her nanny’s eyes glowed. “You did it, Kate! It worked!” Nana Talia tapped her back. “Well done, dear.”“Thank you, Nana.”She poured the fried rice into a bowl and
JAN’s mother decided to hold a one-day funeral for his father. After that, he was taken to his final resting place. Fernan did not show up, and Kate only heard from Winona that he had been locking himself inside his hotel suite and would not talk to anyone. She knew what he did was wrong, but then… she could not help but worry about him. Fernan’s situation was not easy, and there was a possibility that his mental state was at stake. She wanted to check on him, but a lot of reasons were holding her back. In the end, Kate decided not to see him and just wait until their paths crossed again. And as for her husband, Jan was another problem. He had been locking himself inside the guestroom. He has barely eaten a decent meal since his dad died and only filled his stomach with different liquors his hand would have a hold. The Villamar brother’s coping mechanism was too far from their mother’s. After her husband’s funeral, Madam Martina went on a vacatio
KATE was at the venue of their company’s commercial shoot that day. She left her phone in the car and eventually forgot to get it, for she was too occupied with supervising the shoot.“Is it alright if we retake that one? I think it will look better if we take the shot from the left angle. What do you think?” she told the director.“Oh, Katherine! You do have a good eye!” the director said after taking another look at the video they shot. “Let’s roll another take of this one.”The director immediately prepared for another shoot. She sat on a bench as she waited for the shoot to happen. That was when her secretary came to her, rushing.“Is there something wrong?” Bianca handed her her phone. “A call from your in-laws’ residence, Ma’am. It’s urgent.”“Hello…” Kate said nervously. Could it be that something happened to her husband again?
KATE hid the file folder in her family’s ancestral home before going to Jan’s parents’ place. She had to hide it somewhere far from everyone who must not see it in the meantime. She must keep the secret until the right opportunity to tell everyone comes. His family had been through a lot lately; she did not have the heart to add another problem. She dipped herself in the bathtub while enjoying a bottle of champagne, hoping that it would relax her mind and body. It was her only escape since she could not go somewhere far away to unwind.“This is one of the things that I miss about you.”Her gaze reverted to the door when she heard Jan’s voice. She found him leaning against the doorframe. His eyes were glistening with admiration as though she was the most beautiful woman in the world.“If you’re going to join me for a bath, please turn off the light.” She took a huge gulp of champagne.“And
KATE sipped her wine as she sat on the bench in the garden. She went there after putting her daughter to sleep. She thought some fresh air would help her feel sleepy, but it did not do much.“I told you, you should join me in bed from now on,” Jan said as he sat down beside her.“And then I’ll keep running back to Angelique before she wakes up in the morning? Nah.” She chugged down the remaining wine on her glass and put it down. “That set-up is hassle—”“Then perhaps you should teach her to sleep on her own….” He buried his face in her neck and sniffed her scent. “The bed feels so huge and lonely without you by my side.”Kate chuckled when she felt his tongue graze the sensitive flesh of her neck.“I didn’t know that your amnesia has this kind of—” He bit her neck. “Jan!”“Ssshhh…” He snaked his arm around he
SHE opened her eyes when she felt butterfly kisses showering her face. Kate smiled immediately when she saw it was Jan.“Good morning,” he said and kissed her deeply afterwards. Her brows furrowed when she realized that her husband was acting as though they did not argue last night. Was he too drunk last night and he did not know what he was doing? Did he already forget about it?“Tell me… have you forgotten what happened last night?”“Which of the two?” he countered.Kate pressed her lips firmly. Ah, it seemed that he did not forget about everything.Jan sat up and leaned against the headboard. He looked down at her, and his fingers started creating circles at her bosom. Kate closed her eyes and moaned softly. What he was doing was already arousing… for her.“I had a dream last night,” Jan said after a while.“About what?” She did not take her eyes off h
KATE stood by the foyer with her eyes fixed in the direction of the gate. She was waiting for Jan to come home. He left before sunset when she had just arrived from work. Jan did not mention where he would go, and she did not dare ask. But now, Kate’s anxiety was tearing her apart. She feared that her husband would not come back just like the last time.“Katherine?”She turned behind her and saw Jan’s mother walking in her direction.“Mom.” She managed to flash a smile.“What are you doing here, hmm?” Her mother-in-law caressed her arm.“I’m waiting for Jan, Mom.” Kate heaved a sigh and turned in the direction of the doorway again. “He left this afternoon and… I don’t know where he is.”“Jan told me he’s going to meet Winona.”She suddenly felt a pang of jealousy in her chest. Jan did not even remember his feelings for her. Wha
