Chapter 1

Allesia

There were some things in college life that I could absolutely do without, and being in this bar was one of them.

The only reason I was here at all was because she had dragged me. Dana had her eye on some mad who worked here , some beautiful , elusive older man with a roguish Irish drawl and come to bed eyes.

Some guy she didn’t have a chance with but what kind of friend would I be , if I told her that and refused to be her wing woman?

The crappy kind that’s what.

And I was never that.

“Jesus, it’s busy in here.” She elbowed her way to the bar. Not that she had to try that hard, Dana was beautiful and she knew how to show it off. Her curves caught every males eyes whether they were straight or not , women turned to stare at her beautiful face. But it was more than that , people liked to be around Dana because she was just a nice person. Sweet and kind.

It was one of the reasons we got on so well because she thought I was like that as well. She thought I was a nice girl from a good family.

Only my family was the furthest thing from nice. They were loyal of course , but nice? Absolutely not. I didn’t think that word was even in my parents vocabulary.

“You were so late.” She tapped the last man standing in her way on the shoulder and he moved out of her way without her saying a word.

He didn’t move out of my way though, and I had to elbow him roughly to get back next to her.

“I told you, I lost track of time.” Dumping my heavy book bag on the bar I instantly regretted it as stale beer seeped through the material. “But I’m here now aren’t I?”

She turned to me. The silver sequins of her butterfly top catching the lights and making it sparkle. “Yes you are. And looking as ravishing as ever. I just don’t know how you do it.” Shaking her head, she ordered at the bar, two white wine spritzers.

“I.D.” It wasn’t a question , it was a demand and we instantly had them out.  Showing the surly bartender with a flourish and a giggle.

Now back home I wouldn’t be old enough to order wine at a bar but I wasn’t back home and Britain had different rules. I still wasn’t sure about their whole drinking culture but I did enjoy the odd glass of wine on a night out.

“I’m pretty sure you can just roll out of bed and be stunning.” Dana continued. “I mean if I had no make up on and -“ she shook her head. “It’s really not fair.” She teased. “I don’t think we can be friends any more.”

Laughing I elbowed her. “You’re a fine one to talk though Miss glam. That top is -“ fanning myself I whistled. “If he doesn’t notice you tonight then he’s blind-“ I lowered my voice. “Or gay.”

She winked. “I did wonder. But tonight is the night. I can feel it in my bones. They are all fluttery and-“ clamping her hand over her mouth she made a show of looking confused. “Ohh maybe those flutters are somewhere else. Somewhere that needs his bone.”

I laughed so hard that wine came rushing out of my nose. Clamping my hand over my mouth I spluttered, bending over so I didn’t spray my best friend with nose wine.

“Allesia.” She hissed my name and for a second I thought it was because she was worried about me but one glance up and I knew it was a warning.

Dana’s wide brown eyes were locked on someone across the bar and it didn’t take a genius to work out who. Straightening, I wiped a hand across my mouth and followed her gaze.

There were three men in the raised area reserved for VIPs , all of them so similar in looks that they could have been brothers. Dark hair, tanned skin, beautiful faces.

The kind of men who should have been gracing the covers of magazines. Only they weren’t those kinds of men at all because one look at them, at the dangerous aura around them and I knew exactly what they were.

Gangsters.

“Isn’t he dreamy-“ Dana said and then froze as two women joined the group. Sliding between the three of them like they had done so a million times before.

“Oh.” Dana’s face fell.

“I’m sorry babe. Maybe they are just friends.” I tried to console her.

She rolled her eyes, “Yeah friends. I wish I was that type of friend but hey-“ Shrugging she looped her arm through mine. “Do you want to get out of here?”

I didn’t need to answer, she already knew I did. Clubs and pubs just didn’t interest me.  They were ok in small doses but that was about it.

“It’s fine if you want to stay.” I didn’t want to leave if she wanted to stay. Maybe the man she’d had her eye on was interested in someone else but there were plenty more fish in the sea , and Dana was good at fishing.

“What are you smiling about?”

“I was just thinking you are good at fishing.” I said without thinking and she shot me a confused look.

“You are one weird chick Allesia Moretti.” With a shake of her head, she began to turn away only to stop dead when a dark haired man stepped in front of her. Blocking our way.

“Oh.” Dana gave a little scream.

“Going somewhere so soon?” He cocked his head to the side, studying her from top to toe before his eyes travelled to me. “We were hoping you would join us for a drink.”

“Us?” Dana seemed to be in a daze but it was clear from her love struck impression that this was the guy she was here trying to meet.

“Well-“ throwing a glance behind her, she implored me with her eyes. Begged me silently to stay with her so she could have this chance.

Her Irish dream man looked at me too, the smallest of knowing smiles on his face. Like he knew who I was.

“Yeah.” I glanced out of the corner of my eye to the vip table. No one was looking at her. They were all just talking amongst themselves.

No one was watching me, not now and not earlier when I had been rushing here.

No one knew who I was , or who I was related to.

So why did it feel like those three men did?

“Yeah that will be nice.” Dana said.

“Then follow me ladies.” With a small bow , he parted the crowd.

From a booth by the window , a man lifted his head, watching us walk by and frowned.

I had a second to wonder why but only a second before I was ushered away to join the VIPs and the man Dana was so eager to get close to.

The man I was pretty sure was a gangster.

AidenSipping my drink, I watched as she took her seat. Still in the clothes I had seen her in early. Her long blonde hair tied back from her face with only a few golden wisps to frame her face.It was a beautiful face , even more so close up. A pretty upturned nose , with its sprinkling of freckles that she didn’t try to hide with makeup and her full rose bud mouth. She looked like her mother when she was younger. I’d seen the photos of Alice Moretti before she dragged back into the darkness and I saw the same fresh faced innocence in her youngest daughter. But all of that sweet innocence was a lie. How could it not be? Most people might be fooled by her but I wasn’t. When I looked at Allesia Moretti, when I saw those dark brown eyes I saw her father. The ruthless man he was. The killer he was.Allesia might look like her mother but she had her fathers soulless eyes. The perfect mixture of both of them. Beautiful to look at but deadly. How could she not be? Both of her parents were

Allesia “This came for you last night.” Dana threw the deep red roses on my bed without even a good morning. Scrambling backwards against the headboard to get away from flying petals , I stared at her. She looked furious. I just didn’t know why she was angry at me.“Um-“ I reached for the card that had fallen loose. “Thanks.” Not bothering to open the card, I continued to stare at her. “What’s eating you?”She blinked slowly and when she locked eyes with me again , I could see that she wasn’t just angry. She was furious. “You and him disappeared last night.” She left the words hanging between us. “And you didn’t come back.”I swallowed hard. “It’s not what you think.” And I was telling the truth even though I knew she didn’t believe me. “I went to the bathroom and felt sick.” Now I was lying but it wasn’t like I could tell her the truth. To do that would break her heart even more. Or even worse for me she wouldn’t believe me.I loved Dana like a sister and I knew I wouldn’t be able

Aiden She was three people in front of me. Her blonde ponytail bobbing as she walked with her coffee in her hand and a smile on her face. I knew about the smile because I had already circled around her twice without her realising. It was easy to do on the busy street and she wasn’t really paying attention anyway. Allesia was lost in her own thoughts. Was she thinking about the flowers I had sent her. I had been going to send her red spider lilies but that had just seemed too to the point. I didn’t want her scared and running to her family. I needed her charmed. It would make it easier for me.“Are you following me?”I started , my head snapped up to find her standing right in front of me. Surprised, I schooled my face into a confused smile.“Excuse me?”Standing there with her coffee in one hand and her other hand on her hip she continued to stare at me. “You’re following me.” She kept her voice low. Trying not to draw attention to us but failed miserably. People who looked like her

Allessia We didn’t end up going to McQuinns although Aiden did ask me to point it out before steering me down a narrow alleyway and into the smallest quaintest coffee shop I had ever seen.Looking around as he pulled out my chair I smiled. It was adorable and me in every way. I didn’t know how I had lived in the city for this long and missed it.“I can see by your face that you approve.” Taking the seat opposite me, he reached across the table for my hands and trapped them between his. Rubbing his thumb back and forth over the back of them. When he looked up at me his eyes were soft. “You’re not shaking anymore but your fingers are still cold. Are you sure you are ok?”Mutely I nodded. Not because I was in shock or scared any longer but because of the way he was looking at me. No man, not in my entire life, had ever looked at me the way this handsome stranger was.Men looked at me and felt lust. Their lust for me and for the power I promised them but with Aiden he looked at me and i

Aiden I got us a taxi, insisting on it because Allessia was beside herself with worry thanks to her friends screaming.“Hey.” Reaching across the back seat I grabbed her hands in mine. Forcing them apart because she kept picking at her nails and wringing them together. “It’s going to be ok. Did you friend say what was wrong?”She shook her head mutely, tears making her eyes glitter and shine. They were literally swimming in tears but she wasn’t actually crying because no tears fell down her cheek.I reached for her cheek anyway. Rubbing my thing under her eye. “That’s a good thing. Everything is going to be fine. I promise.”Now that was a bare faced lie but only in parts. Things hadn’t gone entirely to plan because my little gift was meant to be for the woman next to me and not her roommate but it seemed the roommate had changed her schedule at the last minute and come home to find my little gift. Not to plan at all but it would have the same effect on the girl next to me. Alessia“Papa.” Softly I closed the bathroom door. Dana was sleeping fitfully on one of the two hotel beds because that’s where we were now.In a hotel in the centre of the city. Something swanky because Dana needed the distraction and I knew my father would go nuclear if he found out I had checked into anything less than five stars. And he had found out in less than hour which meant my parents were still tracking my bank accounts. Of course I kind of knew they would be.“What’s happened?” It was my fathers voice but not the voice he used around me: this was his work voice. “I just got an alert that you used your card to-“I sighed loudly. “We are perfectly safe papa, I am perfectly safe.”“And what exactly are you safe from?” His tone was dangerous and I could clearly picture him stalking back and forth in front of my mum. “What has happened?”“Start from the beginning.” Another male voice quipped and I knew that voice. Alessia I couldn’t get the image out of my mind. All night it had plagued me. Aiden kissing that leggy brunette like his life depended on it. And I was raked with jealousy. Not that I had any right to the feelings assaulting me. He had asked me out for dinner that was true but we weren’t in fact dating. He had just done me a favour and been a gentleman. Glancing at the clock on the nightstand I frowned. It wasn’t even seven am so it was also too early for room service which I had booked for half eight.Maybe it was just my imagination.Someone knocked again. Slightly louder this time. AidenPicking the crystal decanter in my hand I launched it at the far wall. Right next to the window which I was lucky I didn’t hit. I wasn’t sure it would have broken thanks to the safety glass but did I really want to risk it?“Are you done smashing things up or should I wait a while?” A familiar voice spoke from my phone on the bed. I turned to it and if I could have reached through the line and crossed the ocean between us I would have gladly wrapped my fingers around his throat and squeezed the laughter right out of his voice. Laughing at me even when I was in a good mood was a dangerous hobby , laughing at me in this rage was pretty much a death wish. “She said no.” I said again because I had a feeling he didn’t quite get it yet. Maybe he wasn’t really listening. So I would say it again and again until it sank into his thick head. “She fucking said no to having dinner with me.” I clenched my fists. “No one says no to me.”His laughter bubbled up even louder than before. “Has

Aiden “Fuck.” I tugged at my hair wish one hand as I stepped off the elevator and on to our floor. I’d tried to catch up with her but she had been quick so I’d had to take the next one. I was literally a minute or two behind her but Alessia was nowhere to be seen.“Fuck fuck fuck.” Striding down the hallway , I tried to figure out what I should do now. When she had turned up in the foyer all upset and needy I had thought my luck was in and then boom just like that she had gathered her wigs around her.The best thing to do would be to give her space. Alessia was stronger willed than i had given her credit for. I had underestimated her but that wouldn’t happen again. My own door came into view, hers almost directly opposite. Now what was the chances of that? She hadn’t known which hotel I was in. And I had checked in before her and yet we had both ended up not only in the same hotel but literally in rooms facing each other. It would be so easy to knock on her door, maybe pull her into

  • Owned by the Mafia King    Chapter 12

AlessiaThe whisky was still burning down my throat when I used my keycard to let myself into my hotel room a few minutes later. I hated whisky but that wasn’t the reason I had left him in such a hurry. The last thing I needed was for alcohol to lower my guard around him. Because one more drink and I was probably going to do something stupid like climb him like a tree and beg him to take me.That couldn’t happen. It didn’t matter how alone I felt right now. I couldn’t just give myself to the first guy who came along. Even if they were beautiful and charming… And not single. I told myself.Moving into the room I slid the card into its little holder and moved my hand to find the lights. Only in the dark I couldn’t quite remember where that was. Stumbling forward, I let my hand drift until I found it. Behind me something moved. A whisper of cloth brushing against cloth coming from somewhere near the bathroom.I whirled, my heart pounding and half expecting to find Dana right behind m

Alessia We spent the rest of the day at the police station. They took statements and then double checked them. I didn’t know how much more I could tell them because I hadn’t been there.I had no clue what was going on.“You’re a Moretti.” The detective came back into the room, minus the drink he had promised me and sat down heavily on the other side of the table. He had a stack of papers in his hand which he kept glancing down at. “Yes. That is my name. Alessia Moretti.” I forced myself to smile. He didn’t smile back even though he had been all smiles and good natured charm right up until that point. “You’re family is -“I cut him off as Dana shot me a look from the chair next to me. “I know who my family is.”He looked between us. And realisation settled over his features like a mask. “I see. Is your family involved Alessia. Did something happen between you and the man -““You know who it is?” Dana’s voice shook. “Some low level thug, Irish parents but born here.” The detectives

Alessia“This is just what we needed.” Heaving myself out of the jacuzzi I followed after Dana , who seemed to have much more experience with hotel spas than I did.“It is and you just wait until-“ she swung open the door of what I was guessing was the sauna and froze. “Oh.” She said loudly. “Sorry I didn’t realise anyone else was here.”Confused I looked around her and it was my turn to freeze. Fuck.“No problem.” Aidens sultry voice was full of surprise. His eyes found mine and the surprise turned into delight. They twinkled with it. Beautiful even through the steam.“Plenty of room. Unless you ladies want the place to yourself.”Hell yeah I wanted the place to myself. There was no way I was going to be able to relax with him in there and looking the way he did.“No, of course not.” Dana moved into the room until it was just me standing there keeping the door open.“Plenty of room for all of us.” She continued. “Are you coming in , Alessia or are you just going to stand there?” Sh
