I just moved to New York City. After just completing my PHD.
I know no where around this city. I haven't even settled in yet.
I'm excited but also kind of stressed out and anxious. After graduating from MIT a year early I immediately completed my undergrad degree and went into a PHD program which then led me back home to California to work in CIS which is a research institute for biological engineering. I then got a call from NYSCF; the New York Stem Cell Foundation a month ago asking if I would like to join them and continue a stem cell treatment I had worked on my PHD programme. So I accepted the offer and moved here, thankfully my childhood best friend Mason lives here. I was practically glad to have Mason here in New York with me, we have lost a little touch over the years with him moving to New York immediately after college to work in his father's company Davis technologies.
I'm meeting Mason at a restaurant for dinner, he has been so helpful with the move and everything he even got me a place right in the building he lives so we're practically neighbors.
The drive to the restaurant was short, I thanked the driver before getting out of the car and walking in.
"Hello do you have a reservation?" The hostess asks me with a polite smile as I walk in stopping by her podium desk in the restaurant entrance.
"Yes I'm meeting someone, it should be under the name Mason Davis." I say to her while she checks through her book.
"Here it is, Mr Davis isn't here yet but let me show you to your table." She says as she walks me into the fancy restaurant.
"Would you like to order a drink before he gets here?" She asks as I settle in our table.
"No thank you, I'll wait for him." I say.
And suddenly I'm nervous, I haven't really seen Mason over the years since college practically. Our parents were best friends growing up so technically we became best friends too even though Mason is about 4 years older than me, he always treated me like his little sister while I always had a crush on him but that's another story for another time.
About 5 minutes later, Mason shows up flashing me his gorgeous beautiful smile instantly as he sees me.
"Alex!" He calls my name.
My head snapped up towards the sound of my name, and I did a double take as the man in question walked toward me. He was taller than I remembered, and had the type of body that was long and lean but also he had muscles that indicated he worked out and he can for sure carry up in his arms. There'd always been something about him, something magnetic and irresistible that was unrelated to classically symmetrical good looks.
I stand up and he engulfs me into a tight hug.
He grinned, stepping back as he looked me up and down. "You look . . . different, Alexis."
"Good different?" I ask blushing a little and silently scolding myself for blushing.
He continued to stare. He stared at my neck, at my lips, and then took time to inspect my eyes. The energy between us was palpable.
"Good different obviously, you look amazing Alex." He says with a smile and my insides somersaults at his words.
"I feel like I haven't seen you in years." He says as he watches me after we made our orders.
"Yeah me too, the last time I saw you was briefly Christmas like 2 years ago." I say.
"Yeah Christmas," he repeats with a smile.
"I'm so glad you are moving to New York, we can finally get to hang out like before." He adds.
"Yeah me too, I kind of missed you." I say with smile.
"Only kind of? C'mon Alexis say the truth, I know you missed me bad." He says smirking.
I laugh at that while I roll my eyes at him playfully.
"So how did you like your apartment?" He asks.
The whole building is actually owned by his family, when he heard I was moving he got me the place which I was particularly grateful I didn't have to go through apartment hunting.
"It's gorgeous, I haven't unpacked yet but I love it." I say with a smile.
"Great, I'll send my personal assistant to come help you unpack." Mason says with a smile.
"Really? No need, I'm kind of those weird people that like to unpack by themselves besides it's just my clothes and books." I explain.
"If you say so, I can help too." Mason says with a smile. "You're like a whole ass scientist now, I'm so proud of you." He adds which makes my heart wrench happy thoughts smiling at him.
"So when do you start work?" He adds again asking.
"Next week." I say with a sigh.
"Aren't you excited?" Mason asks noticing my non enthusiasm.
"I am, I'm just a little anxious." I explain.
"Don't worry you'll be fine, you're like the smartest person I know." He says reassuring me which eases my worry a bit making me smile.
"Thanks." I say feeling a little less awkward.
"We have this whole week to catch up, I feel like I know nothing about my best friend." Mason says. We were finally done eating and we're currently on our way home.
"Yeah we should definitely catch up, the only thing I know about you currently is what I hear from your mom." I say.
"Now we definitely must catch up, don't know what she has been telling you." Mason says. "Don't believe everything she tells you by the way." He adds with a sigh.
"Noted and also kind of intrigued." I say giving him a mysterious look.
"You know my mom, she likes to exaggerate. Also, tomorrow breakfast at my place, I'll come get you." He adds as we enter the elevator.
When we reach my floor, he hugs me before he says goodbye and goes up to his floor.
Immediately I enter my apartment, I dial my best friend Jessica technically my only friend back home.
"I miss you already," she says answering the phone.
"I miss you too." I say.
"So? How do you like New York so far? "How's Mason? Is he still so hot and yummy?" She asks ranting.
"Well I haven't really been out, just went to dinner with Mason. And to answer your question he's still so hot and yummy." I say sighing.
"I'm so jealous of you, you two should date." Jessica says and I can hear the excitement in her voice.
"Jess you know we're just friends, beside Mason thinks of me as he little sister." I say sighing.
"No he does not, he's just protective of you. I'm sure he knows how gorgeous you are, have you seen you Alex. You're such a gorgeous babe, you just have to let him know that." Jessica explains.
"No thank you, Mason is gorgeous and amazing but we have an amazing friendship and I don't want to lose that." I say as my heart tightens. "Plus we have kind of lost touch so it's kind of good to have him in my life again so I shouldn't mess anything up." I add.
"Well you should settle in so we can find you a NewYorker boyfriend then." Jess squeals.
I probably won't even have time for dating, I start work next week and I'm going to be very busy but I don't tell Jessica that, her main thrill in life is match making.
"I'm jet lagged, I should probably turn in now. Talk to you later." I say.
"Okay, I love you." She says before ending the call.
I sigh walking through my apartment, it's so chic and beautiful even with my millions of luggage all around. It's the kind of apartment Blair Waldorf would have, it also has a great view of the city and God everything is absolutely stunning though I do not particularly enjoy the noise.
I have lived in Los angelos basically all my life. Grew up in Beverly Hills which wasn't particularly noisy and I don't think there's actually a place noisier than New York.
But I have a feeling I'm going to like it here.
The Happiest Days.Six blissful months of living with Mason. He has been amazing and more than I ever expected, not that I expected things not to go well.I know myself, I love recklessly even if it consumes me and honestly what’s the point of loving someone if it doesn’t consume you. I might not even be making sense but to myself it’s the most sane I’ve ever been.Mason loves me and I love him that’s all that matters. We’ve kept our engagement a secret between us, Mason got me a huge engagement ring and everything which is being kept in my dressing drawer.Sometimes I wear it and only it as Mason makes love to me, slowly and beautifully. Both our families and friends still don’t know about the engagement. My mother still has her issues with the relationship though I’d like to think she’s been pretty cool about it and she’s coming around to accepting it and my father is always supportive of anything that makes me happy.Mason’s parents though love our relationship and are absolutely o
My relationship with my mother has always been a normal conventional one or atleast I think so. We fight and make up, we don’t agree on everything and sometimes we agree on everything, she has expectations of me as her daughter and I also have expectations of her as my mother. So I wasn’t particularly surprised when I received an angry voicemail from her, when she found out about Mason and I.Mind you, no one still knows he even asked me to marry him. All she knows or heard is we’re in a relationship and I’m living with him.In her own words, “Alexis what’s this I hear about you and Mason dating? Please tell me this is false news?” That’s from voicemail one. Then she left another one, “Alexis call me back! and for me to find out from Mason’s mother?? How could you do this to me??”Her exact words.“Hey you okay??” Mason asks from the kitchen. He’s cooking something, I don’t know what and I was happily watching him until I checked my phone.“Uhnmm excuse me, I need to call my mother ba
Alexis’s POV Dinner with Mason’s dad was anything other than I expected. Not that I expected it to go well, their relationship isn’t particularly a good relationship. But it was like being in an episode of succession, with Logan and Kendall being passive aggressive and I thought women were the passive aggressive ones no offense to us.One good thing though, Mason’s dad is happy that I’m now with his son. Which by the way Mason made it feel we’re just in a casual relationship, technically he said it to his father.I mean maybe he’s just like that with his father because of some unresolved issues between them, atleast that’s what I’m telling myself anyway because his words hurt.To be exact his words were. His father had said, “Alexis I’m glad you and my son are together can’t wait for you to officially part of the family.”“How about you don’t ruin something casual.” Mason had said to his father and his words hurt but I didn’t take it to heart, I told myself it’s not about me it’s abo
Alexis's POVI spend the first two days in bed, in and out of sleep. I miss Mason every morning because he leaves for work while I’m asleep, I always feel his goodbye kiss though. We only managed to eat dinner together once which by the way I started yawning half way through. Which then Mason tucked me in bed and went into his home office to work. His has been pretty occupied by work, I haven’t had the chance to ask him what’s going on with that but I feel the jet lagged leaving my body already so I’m going to be more present.I turn in bed checking the time on the bedside clock. It’s 5:20 pm, I’ve literally slept all day but thank God I feel refreshed. I look for my phone which I feel under the covers, I have 32 missed calls. What the hell?Half are from my mother, some from Angie my best friend, few from Jess and Nick, Mason’s friends well now my friends too. Few messages, everyone wondering where I am and how am doing. And ofcourse my mom threatening to call the police and report m
Alexis's POV After our short romance filled trip to Italy which was about 2 months ago, I went back to work in Geneva. Still focusing neurodegenerative diseases highlighting the need to better understand the regenerative capacity and many uses of stem cells in the field. One thing I can say absolutely is that I find my work and being in the fulfilling but I also haven't had a break from science and everything that has to do with it since I started college. So I kind of feel like this is the right time for me to let's say cool off a bit.Not completely leave my work but pull back a bit and relax. I have finished the third stage of my research here in Geneva now it's time for the medical trials which I don't have to be here for, I can receive updates from anywhere in the world and give out inputs from anywhere.Which is why I'm moving back to New York, the university I've been consulting for here in Geneva want me to stay, they are even thinking of giving a grant for the next project
Alexis's POV "I'm a very jealous person Mason, especially when it comes to you. If there's anything you want me to know, tell me now because I can't stand the thought of you being with another woman." I say after a bit. I was still in lap. He was still holding me but I needed to say this. I know I wasn't perfect, I had slept with his friend but I came clean about it. I don't want a relationship where we have things hidden from each other. "So please Mason, if you there's something I should know. Please tell me now." I added again. "Alexis you have nothing to worry about, I only ever want you." Mason. Says. "If things don't work out for us, I don't know if I can walk away when I need to," I confessed, the panic rising up in me. "We're past walking away, Alexis." A statement of fact, as if my fate were already sealed by his words. "I wasn't looking for you. But I still found you Alexis, there's no going back for us. You're mine as I am yours." With those words, I'm melting.
Alexis's POV I can't stay here. I couldn't. I grab my phone and handbag heading for the elevator, before it opens I quickly head down the stairs instead of waiting for it.I couldn't see Mason right now, I didn't want to cry because that's what would happen if I saw him.Once I reach the ground floor of the hotel, I ask the reception to get me a car while I google hotels in Rome."The car is here for you Madame," the receptionist says in a thick Italian accent."Thank you." I say heading out.As I get into the car, I see Mason running out to me. "Alexis!" He calls out my name but I close the car door quickly and ask the driver to please go."dove stai andando signora" the driver says in Italian. He was asking where I wanted to go to.Being a nerd, I actually know a little Italian though I'm rusty."Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel." I read out for him from the trip advisor page I googled."Sì signora." He says as he drives. My head is spinning, I have so many thoughts going t
Alexis's POV I took 5 days off work. Mason and I are going Rome today. One of the most romantic cities ever, I'm beyond excited. I had spent the week, since Mason went back to New York, planning shopping for the trip. I'm not someone who has had alot of experiences with boyfriends, never even traveled out of the country with a guy so maybe I'm a little over excited. My bags are packed, I'm meeting Mason at the airport. He's coming from New York, meeting me here so we can leave together. The whole plane ride to Italy, Rome wasn't anything particular. Mason mostly worked on his laptop while I wrote and balanced equations of test results of my research. Immediately we arrived a car was waiting for us at the airport, which immediately took us to this very luxurious hotel. Our room was beautiful. It has a vibe of royalty with a splash of rich architecture. It had a huge living room, a dining room and don't even get me started on the bedroom and bathroom. "Wow." I whispered looking
Alexis's POV When I wake up I'm alone in bed. I look around for any sign of Mason but I don't see any, did I imagine or dream about him being here? It can't possibly be a dream it felt surreal and ofcourse I'm naked which means last night definitely happen. I hop out of bed and go look for him in the living or kitchen but I don't find him so I just hop into the shower. I'm already late for work. When I'm done with my shower I hear voices coming from my dinning room so I go to check. It's Mason he's on the phone, when he sees me he waves me over to him his phone still pressed to his ears. "I will tell her, I love you too." He says ending his call as I stood in front of him. "Your mom?" I ask. "Yes and she wanted me to say hello to you." He says and I frown. "You told your mother about us?" I ask. "Not in that sense but she knows I came here to see you." He explains and I nod with relieve, I haven't told my parents about Mason and I so I don't want them finding out from someon
