“I’m done!”
The words were so familiar to her, yet so strange coming from her husband’s mouth. They had been married for less than six months, and although it was an arranged marriage, Nita thought her husband was starting to develop feelings for her, so what could have gone wrong? She found it hard to process his words, so she stuttered confused, “Nick…” She wanted to ask more questions, but he was done listening to her. He pushed a brown envelop towards her, “This is the divorce agreement, sign it and the necessary alimony would be sent to your account. Isn’t that why you married me? For money” Nita had never felt that low in her life. Yes, she was from a poor family, and their marriage was an arranged one, but she had never once thought about the wealth that comes from being Nick’s wife. She had gotten married for her grandfather’s sake and now she had developed feelings for Nick. When she didn’t say any word, Nick continued, “I’ll leave this house for you as part of your alimony, but I don’t want to see you anywhere close to me anymore.” He turned away from her and left. For few minutes, all she could do was hold onto at the agreement in her hand; it was not possible that Nick was truly letting her go. She didn’t want to read whatever was in the agreement. She didn’t want to see her name and Nick’s in the divorce agreement. She felt her leg give way as she fell on the floor. One of the maids ran towards her, “Ma’am, are you okay?” She wanted to reply. She wanted to ask her to call Nick back, so she could ask him more questions, but she felt dizzy and soon everywhere was dark. When Nita opened her eyes back, she was in a room with beeping monitors. She adjusted her gaze to the room and saw the maid she had spoken to last sitting beside her with her hand covering hers. Nita tried to speak, but her voice was hoarse. She cleared her throat before asking, “Where’s Nick?” The maid sighed, “Ma’am we are at the hospital. You collapsed suddenly.” She didn’t care about that as she remembered the divorce agreement Nick had given her. She forced herself up, although she still felt weak, “I need to see Nick. Now!” The maid tried to hold her down, but she was too strong for the maid. As she opened the door to leave, the doctor came in with a wide smile on his lips. When he saw her leaving, the smile was replaced with a frown, “Where are you going to Mrs. Grimm?” Nita couldn’t bother to answer the doctor as she tried pushing her way out of the door. The doctor sighed, “You don’t need to stress yourself, Mrs. Grimm. You’re pregnant and collapsed due to stress. Doing anything stressful is dangerous at this moment.” His words stopped Nita from pushing through the doors. As if of its own accord, her hand moved protectively towards her stomach: a baby between her and Nick. A smile formed at the tip of her mouth. There was no way Nick would want to divorce her after finding that out. She needed to tell him about their baby. She thanked the doctor and rushed out of the hospital. The maid rushed behind her worried that something might happen to her on the way if she went alone. Nita called a cab to take her to Nick’s estate. She knew he wouldn’t be back in their house. He might be in one of his apartments in his estate. To her, it felt like the driver was taking a whole lot of time to get to his estate, so she kept trying to call his number. He didn’t pick up her calls. He had made it clear that he didn’t want to see her and he was pushing through that. She knew he wasn’t the type to change his mind so easily, but this – her hand rested on her tummy – was enough to change his mind. When she got to the estate, she started running through each of the apartments. She had no idea exactly where he would be, as she had only stayed in the estate once, and that was during their wedding. It was a low key wedding that took place in the estate with only family members, so she barely knew her way around here. As she stopped at each apartment, she hoped to bump into someone who would tell her where he was, but she didn’t. She was beginning to feel tired and dehydrated, when she opened the door to the next apartment. She stopped at the door. She heard weird sounds coming from the room and that altered her steps. Every apartment she had been in was silent. She had no idea why Nick had so many vacant apartments, but she once heard the whole family spent their holiday there, so it’s justifiable. She moved slowly until she stopped at the door. She waited to listen to those weird sounds again, but there was none. Nita sighed in relief and placed her hand on the door. She hoped Nick was in here this time around. With the last courage she has, she forced the door opened. Nick was there but he wasn’t alone, beside him were two ladies whom she couldn’t tell if they were naked or not. Nita steps failed her. It hadn’t been that long he brought her the divorce letter and he already moved on as if she meant nothing to him; maybe she does meant nothing to him. But she had felt a connection between them during the last month; they had spent every night in each other arms. So, what could have happened? She placed her hand on her tummy. Her child doesn’t deserve a father like this, it deserved way better than someone who would disregard them. Nick had stopped to stare at her, but he didn’t say any word. It was as if he didn’t care that she had caught him. Nita moved back slowly until she was out of the apartment, then she started running out of the estate. The maid that followed her had just arrived at the estate in a different cab. When she saw Nita running, she ran after her, but before she could catch up with her, an oncoming car hit her.It was difficult for Nick to get a good night sleep; the fact that his family was just few rooms away from him, and he couldn’t hold them made him sigh. Normally, he found it hard to sleep, but at that moment, it seemed more difficult to sleep.Instead of trying to sleep, he picked up his laptop. Just then an email dropped in his inbox. Joel had sent every piece of information on Sam Moore. Nick took his time devouring the information. There was nothing special about Sam Moore: he was just like the regular asshole Nick had dealt with in the past. Nita wasn’t the first girl he had tried to deceive, but she was the last he could. If not for the text message he had received, he would have easily thought Sam was just unfortunate. But he knew that wasn’t the case. Someone had murdered Sam intentionally, and it was because of Nita. He closed his laptop running his hand through his hair. Joel was yet to send anything about the person who had sent him the message, which means the person was
“I want the best on this.” Nick’s voice stayed harsh even though he didn’t mean for it to be. He clenched and unclenched his fist. There were hardly things that could get him easily upset, but this did. The idea that someone out there had the audacity to threaten him to stay away from his wife didn’t sit right, What made it worse was the fact that this person had access to his private number. He could count the number of people who had his private number. So, whoever this was. The person was highly informed. He picked his phone to read the text again. STAY AWAY FROM NITA OR YOU’LL END UP LIKE SAM MOORE.He sighed. He knew who Sam Moore was: it was that fool that thought he could blackmail Nita and had ended up getting himself killed. Nick chuckled. Whoever sent this wasn’t just issuing a threat – they were promising death. If the person thought he was powerful enough to kill him, then he had to be one of the best at what he does. “You don’t need to waste resources searching low
“He doesn’t eat carrot.” Nita said, picking out the orange pieces in Nate’s food.Nick chuckled as he opened his own plate. “I don’t eat carrot either.” He showed his food to Nita and she scowled.“I thought vegetables were good for his growth, which was why I asked them to add some to his.”Nita frowned. She had learned too late that Nate was allergic to carrots. She didn’t have allergies, so she had wondered why her son had one – until she was able to learn that he took after his father. That sucked. The last thing she wanted was to acknowledge Nick as his father not to talk of inheriting anything from him.Nick smiled, “I’ll ring one of the maids to bring another meal for him. You don’t have to remove the carrots.” Before she could protest, he was already on the phone. Nita hated how quickly things happened at his command. More than that, she hated that he was making an effort to look good in front of their son. What happened to his carefree attitude? What happened to when he prefe
She hated him. She hated him with all her being. If he thought he could waltz in and out of their lives at his own convenience, then he must be joking. She ignored Nate’s pleading and waited for Jimmy’s message. The moment her phone beeped with an address, she grabbed her suitcase. “Let’s go, Nate.”Nate frowned, “I thought we were staying with Uncle Nick, mummy.” His face fell into that puppy look that had always gotten Nita to do anything for him. But this time, she wouldn’t fall for it - not when Nick was involved.“No! We can’t impose on a stranger, Nate.”Nick stood there, arms crossed, smirking like he had the upper hand, “So, you are just going to run away again. You’re going to run like five years ago.”She stopped, turned towards him and said with clenched teeth, “I’m not running. I’m just doing what I think is right.”Nick nodded, stepping closer. “And that’s avoiding what you are supposed to do?”Their eyes locked, the air between them thick with unspoken words. Nate clea
It was a bold move, one that warranted a smirk from Nick as he stared at her with that look that sent shivers down her spine. “I thought I already said I want you back.” Nita scoffed, trying to keep her voice steady, “If I remember clearly, you were the one eager for a divorce then.” “A mistake I am ready to rectify.” His voice was ever steady and clear. “I can show you what I mean,” he trailed his hand down her arm making her breath seize. Nita held her breath; she was going to pretend as if whatever he did wouldn't affect her. He no longer affects her like he wanted. But his hand moved lower than her arm, straying towards her leg. Nita pulled back, cutting off every link between them, “I don’t care what you mean. All I want is a divorce.” He stared at her as if he was trying to read her soul and know every little thing going on in her mind, “Well, it’s a pity we all don’t get what we want.” He moved further in and dropped on the bed. Nita stared between him and the door; she was
Nick had never realized how much fun it could be to spend time with a child, especially his own son. Maybe it was because he’d never spared children much of his time before, or maybe it was because this particular child was his blood. Either way, he found himself enjoying every small moment with Nate. And, as a bonus, the boy was happily sharing tidbits about his mother – information Nick knew he’d never get from Nita herself. “So, you mean that man isn’t your mother’s husband?” Nick asked, trying to sound casual as they walked together.Nate narrowed his eyes in confusion, “Which man?”“The one who’s always with you,” Nick replied, his voice softeningNate laughed at the suggestion, looking up with an innocence that made Nick’s heart clench. “That’s my mother’s personal assistant. Don’t be silly.”Nick stopped dead in his tracks. He had been stopping himself from getting closer to Nita because of her personal assistant. He had really thought she had moved on, but it seemed they were
