Chapter 2

Going Back to His House

As I run and looked back, I realized he stopped at once as he looked at me. A white car was approaching from my front, “The police!” I run to them and when I was about reporting, he took to his heels. I reached my hostel still crying and broken like a jailbird and thinking about all that had happened that day.

I felt that I was in danger. My only hope was shuttering before me. I needed to act wisely as well. Either to abort the pregnancy and school or keep it and leave school. I sunk myself in my bed and wept as loudly as I could. Food? I had not taken even a drop of water that day.

Sandra, my roommate asked and asked but I didn’t mind her.

I dashed my hand under my pillow, drew the test tube I had used earlier out, and gave it to her to check for herself, “I am pregnant Sandra, I am f*cking pregnant!” I yelled, opening my mouth wide to let out some pain, yet it didn’t work as easily as I thought it would. The pain still lingered in my bones.

“Who is responsible, girl?” she probed, squeezing more pain from my heart. That question held a lot of pain, like a gun. I wanted to forget it but it didn’t work. I wished time could go back so that I would erase my birthday, but things don’t seem to work that way.

She knew Damien, my first-ever boyfriend did it, “it’s Damien. Who else? Don’t be a silly girl, don’t be…” I sat in my bed and pulled my hair.

“Then why are you crying about this? You are hosting the child of a billionaire. Don’t you count yourself lucky?? Do you know how many women want him?” Sandra spewed out many nonsense and rhetorical questions. She did not have the kind of fire I was set upon and just said anything she wanted.

“I wish it was that easier, Sandra!” I raised my palm to her face, “look!” The promise ring was taken away by its giver so I wanted her to see it. When I got it on my finger, she was the first person I told, and she had to be the first person to see it out of my finger.

“Oh my god! Where is the ring? Did you lose it? " She was fast enough to figure out what had happened, even though my ring finger was scratched and lines of blood were boldly showing. Even a blind man would see it, “ohh yeahh, you got hurt?” she playfully added.

She was getting on my nerves but I controlled my temper. She knew my situation; she knew I was on scholarship. The New York University of Law has given me a scholarship when I appeared first in an inter-high school debate competition. My whole life. Yes, my whole life depended on the scholarship and myself!

“Damien broke up with me, Sandra,” I yelled, “he is asking me to abort it, but I can't do this.” I wept, but now, my tears were dried, they were actually finished.

“This can’t be happening to you, girl. Stop crying. I know you loved him so much. Your love thing was so early.” She admittedly threw herself into my arms again. Long ago, she had told me she loved me. She was interested in me and wanted us to date, but I wasn’t ready for that kind of relationship. Soon, she got a boyfriend and left it, “We will go to his house tomorrow, he must accept this pregnancy.”

My stomach began to growl after I had had a little hope from Sandra, “you are hungry, right?” Sandra discovered and quickly made me some coffee, “take this and wait for me to prepare you some noodles. She left me alone and went to the small kitchen to prepare it.

I couldn’t help myself, but to keep calling Damien’s phone he wouldn’t answer.

“Please leave a voice message,” I continued hearing it over and over. I laid down and got up again, then went to the washroom to look at myself in the mirror. My eyes had turned red, but that was not a problem at all. I tested another pregnancy test tube and was still showing positive. Each time it jumped into my head, my heart also hit my ribs.

I stood and sat in the window, looking down at the exuberant building in New York, the roads and lights, the gigantic beautiful school, and the people who were happy going up and down. I got jealous about how they were moving to and fro, laughing and holding hands with their partners.

“Where are you, Rose?” Sandra had a fluency disorder, she sometimes talked at a slow pace when she was tired or whenever it wanted to come. For that reason, she associated with few people, just me and his boyfriend were enough for her.

For me, I had more than five friends but Sandra was the best, “let’s go have dinner.” She came to pull me. She knew where I used to sit whenever I was bored or stressed.

We ate and slept. That night we shared the same bed and she comforted me. The next morning, I was the first person to wake up. It was five am and I couldn't sleep again. I had dreamt about Damien accepting the pregnancy and myself playing happily with two kids.

I couldn’t see their faces well, dreams are unreliable sometimes, though, it motivated me the most. We did the necessary. “In all situations, eat first.” Sandra never joked with her meal as she broke eggs preparing breakfast.

*******

Thank goodness that Damien Anderson was in his house when we reached there.

“Did you do as I told you, son?” an unknown voice raised from the top as I looked up to see who it was.

“Yes Mom, I did.” He replied, flipping through his magazine which contained pictures of different girls from different classes, “I think she is here to sign the documents.” He added and flipped another page.

Immediately he stood up, someone banged the door loudly as the tall fat man stood behind it crossing his chubby hands on his chest like a prison guard.

“Here, sign the documents and get that thing aborted, I guess that’s why you are here.” His mother dropped a pen on the documents and pushed it to me as I sat in front of the wooden table.

“That’s not why we are here!” Sandra finally broke the silence, hit her hand on the table, and stood up as her voice hit the table and bounced to hit whomever it concerned, “Don’t sign it, Rose!”

Damien Anderson’s face changed, bringing in his tiger mood as he stepped forward to face Sandra, “repeat what you just said,” he bellowed in a cold scary tone no one would like to hear as Sandra could not talk. Yeah, I wished she remained silent because I was even afraid of the outcome of whatever might happen.

“If she refuses to sign, you are going to be in hot waters little girl,” his mother added, “my son made a big mistake to slide his dick into such a pauper. Look, he’s getting married soon and you wouldn’t want to face my wrath if you mess things up.”

I molded a fist, not wanting to sign the abortion document in front of me. It was tearing my heart; soon the tears began to stride down my face, “I am a student, I am not seeking marriage now. But, I only want him to accept that, he is responsible for this pregnancy and…” I began to stammer.

“Lies! I sense lies! You, university students, go around sleeping around with random guys, and now you want to make my son a false father of a bastard!? I, Angela Lopez, will never allow this to happen,” she paused, as her anger reached her maximum.

After taking in a deep breath, she continued, “The only thing we can do to help you is abort it.'' After saying it like a rap, she hit some notes of dollars on the table. She couldn’t put herself in my shoes to feel what I was devastatingly going through. It was like the whole world was crumbling on me. it was suffocating.

Damien Anderson just stood there, watching us like he was watching a TV show. He was just gazing at us without even blinking his eyes, “Do you want your friend to be in trouble?” Angela Lopez asked, calling the fat security guard to come over.

Sandra’s body began to tremble like a vibrating spring. Her trembling inflicted me as well, as I quickly snatched the pen from the table. “I will sign it, please let her go.” I whimpered desperately as I dragged the documents.
