Chapter 4

I could feel my consciousness fading as I coughed up blood.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Xander rushing toward me. For some reason, his anxious expression suddenly reminded me of when I was three. He had told me I was cute and stuffed me into his backpack to show me off to his classmates.

Little me had instantly won over his classmate Jacob. He whisked me away and hid me. Xander had been even more frantic back then than he was now.

The thought made me laugh, though I coughed up more blood as I did.

Xander, if you knew you had run me over, would you still turn the classroom upside down and beat up all your classmates like you did back then?

Probably not, right?

Just as he was about to reach me, Xander suddenly stopped in his tracks. He picked up a phone call, and his face turned tense.

"Evelyn, don’t worry. I’m on my way.

"Alright, I won’t tell Jacob. Don’t cry."

After hanging up, he immediately made another call.

"Oliver, I hit someone at the South Beach intersection,
