Chapter 2

Author: Heisen Steele
After a thorough check-up confirmed that my baby was perfectly healthy, I finally felt at ease and headed home.

The moment I walked through the door, Sharon’s greedy eyes darted to my hands. Seeing that they were empty, she frowned and sank back into the couch.

"Fiona, honestly, you’re a grown woman. How do you always come home empty-handed? I’m only saying this because we’re close. Next time, you should—oh!"

Before she could finish, she clutched her stomach and let out a groan.

My mom, alarmed, rushed over to the couch and pressed her ear to Sharon’s belly. "Let me listen! What’s wrong with my precious grandson?"

In just a few moments, Sharon’s once rosy complexion turned pale. "It hurts so much! Take me to the hospital. I feel like I’m dying!"

Hearing that, my mom’s face clouded with disapproval. "How many times have I told you? That’s the reincarnation of a golden blessed child in there. We can’t take him to a filthy place like a hospital. And stop comparing yourself to Fiona. She’s just—"

Realizing her slip, my mom hesitated, glanced at me, and quickly tried to explain. "Fiona, don’t take it the wrong way. I was just speaking out of concern."

Even as she broke out in cold sweat from the pain, Sharon still managed to back her up. "Yes, Fiona, you know Mom loves you the most. She just misspoke. But it hurts so much. Please, take me to the hospital."

I casually set down my bag, bent to change my shoes, and didn’t spare them a glance. "Of course, I know. Mom loves me the most. So does my brother. And Sharon, you love me the most too."

Straightening up, I added with mock concern, "But you know how hospitals are—those high-tech machines might scare off our family’s blessed child. What would we do then?"

Sharon’s face turned ashen, and cold sweat dripped down her forehead. "You’re right, Fiona. You’re absolutely right. I can’t go to the hospital. Even if it costs me my life, I’ll give this family its blessed child!"

Hearing Sharon’s change in tone, my mom’s face immediately lit up with a smile. "That’s my good daughter-in-law! Just stay home and rest well. Bear with it for now; I’ll go and pray for you."

With that, she happily left Sharon, still writhing in pain, and hurried to the mantelpiece, lighting a candle and murmuring a prayer.

Sharon struggled to sit up, her eyes drifting toward my bag. "I really envy you, Fiona. You’re carrying an ordinary child, so you don’t have to suffer like this. Poor me, carrying the golden blessed child, and I can’t even afford a decent bag."

I gave her my brightest smile. "That’s really my brother’s fault. When he gets home, let’s both scold him together!"

Sharon’s face stiffened, clearly not expecting me, who always treated her like a sister, to flatly refuse her. She looked visibly uncomfortable, her expression faltering.

I watched her reaction with amusement, my smile widening. "But Sharon, carrying the golden blessed child must be exhausting. From now on, let me take charge of your meals. As your little sister, I’ll make sure you’re properly nourished!"

My mom, hearing this, immediately abandoned her prayers. She snuffed out the candle on the mantel and rushed over to grab my hand. "That’s my thoughtful Fiona! Seeing you and Sharon getting along so well makes me so happy!"

Sharon forced a smile, her tone playfully chiding. "Mom, most families favor their sons, but you’re the only one who spoils your daughter and leaves your son out in the cold. I’m starting to get jealous of Fiona!"

Watching the two of them singing the same tune, I lowered my gaze silently.

They always claimed to dote on me, but the house and car had all gone to my brother.

If it weren’t for my wealthy husband, they would’ve long forgotten about me entirely!

In my past life, I yearned for familial love and was blinded by their hypocrisy. I let them lead me by the nose, using my child as leverage to constantly demand money from my husband and mother-in-law to support their household.

But in the end, after everything I gave, they conspired to kill me—just to ensure Sharon could leave behind a legacy despite her uterine fibroids.

Now, I finally saw their true colors.

From this moment on, this vile family wouldn’t get a single cent from me again!

Sharon writhed in pain for what felt like an eternity before finally recovering. Once she was sure she was fine, she exchanged a glance with my mom.

Catching on instantly, my mom’s face lit up with a smile as she turned to me. "Fiona, look at your sister-in-law! She’s feeling much better now. Shouldn’t you take her out for a stroll and buy her something nice to eat?"

Their greedy looks didn’t escape my notice. I smiled lightly and nodded.

Seeing this, Sharon sprang to her feet and casually slung my bag over her shoulder. "Come on! If we don’t hurry, the high-end grocery stores will be closed!"

Make sure Mom prepares all this properly for you." Stuffing a spoonful of her dessert parfait into her mouth, Sharon nodded eagerly. "Don’t worry, Fiona. You’ll always be the family’s favorite. Even the little golden nephew wouldn’t dare outshine you!"Under my and Mom’s dedicated care, Sharon’s belly swelled rapidly, as if inflated like a balloon. Even my usually indifferent brother couldn’t help but comment when he saw her. "You and Fiona got pregnant around the same time, so how is your belly twice the size of hers?" Sharon playfully smacked his arm, clearly annoyed. "I’m carrying the golden blessed child, while she’s carrying an ordinary baby. Of course, my

I’ll beat you to death for that!" As I focused on taking deep breaths to relax, I watched my usually composed and graceful mom lose all control. She started smashing the equipment inside the ambulance and lunged at the nurse again. The nurse, already shaken by the sight of the stillborn fetus inside Sharon, burst into tears as she clutched her stinging cheek. Now that there’s trouble, of course, it’s your responsibility to step up." Listening to his ridiculous reasoning, I let out a cold laugh and hung up without another word. My husband, watching my reaction, hesitated before speaking cautiously. "Fiona, shouldn’t we help the family out a little?" I sighed, looking at his tentative expression. "Fine, send someone to keep an eye on things at the city hospital. But don’t spend a single penny. Oh, and make sure to get my mom out on bail and send her back to the hospital." Brian stood frozen in shock, his mind unable to process what he’d just heard. Behind him, a wail erupted. "My grandson! How could you turn my precious grandson into a tumor?" The nurse, fully aware of his mother’s outrageous behavior in the ambulance, glared at her with visible disdain. "Don’t be ridiculous. We’re a reputable hospital. How could we ‘switch’ a baby with a tumor? Your daughter-in-law didn’t attend a single prenatal check-up and managed to grow a malignant tumor larger than a baby. Frankly, we’re the ones who are shocked." Brian and his mother exchanged a look, their mutual disappointment clear in each other’s eyes. The nurse, growing impatient, shoved the consent form into Brian’s hands. "Sign this immediately. The tumor has caused a uterine rupture, and if we don’t operate now, it will be life-threatening!" Brian stood there dazed, as if floating in a fog, and raised the pen to sign, only for his mother to slap it away. "Sign? For what? Do you know how ex

"Your way of showing love to Fiona is to deliver news of Sharon’s death while she’s recovering postpartum and then demand money from her?" I turned to see my husband, Cyrus Goodwin, walking in. A faint smile touched my lips. "You’re back. Did you bring my clam chowder?" Cyrus knelt down, carefully opened the container, and blew on the spoon before holding it to my lips. "Take it slow. It’s still hot." Brian, who had been seething on the sidelines, finally snapped. With a furious yell, he slapped the bowl out of Cyrus’ hand. "Didn’t you hear me? My wife is dead because of Fiona!
