003 - Diary

It was hard for me to believe what was written in Duna's diary, but the pile of magazines I found on the table only confirmed what was written in the diary.

Essentially, it is now the year 3044. The human population has drastically decreased to less than 1 billion remaining. This happened because of the actions of researchers who wanted to create a space and time portal using electromagnetic waves that were transmitted throughout the world.

On the one hand they have managed to create a portal that connects to another planet. 1 hour on earth is equal to 1 day on another planet. Unfortunately, there is not just one portal that appears and it is spread randomly throughout the world.

The portal that appears will disappear after 24 hours, but the beasts that appear through the portal are very difficult to defeat even with a lot of troops and ammunition. Even so, the materials obtained from these wild animals are very valuable because they can be used for construction materials and health. The wild animals from the portal are called Xenobeasts.

The frequency of portal appearances increases as the researchers experience failures that result in their laboratories being blown up to nothing. Humans have no choice but to adapt and create special bases protected by levitation wave transmitters. So there is no need to worry that the portal will appear in the middle of a residential area.

The negative impact is that the portal bounched by the levitation wave will last for 3 days and its location is not too far from the base where humans live.

Duna Delaporte. In order to entertain herself, she joined the TOP mercenary alliance which has now changed its name to Why So Serious (WSS). In addition to exploring the portal, they also do various activities together, including becoming additional soldiers for the base when needed.

"I'm sleepy," I whispered. Even so, I still forced myself to read the diary.

One fact I found about Duna's death is... Nothing. This diary is more like a guidebook than a heartfelt diary.

In this diary, Duna wrote that the mercenary card is different from the ID card. Only mercenary administrators with ranks R4 and R5 can enter the rooms and houses of fellow mercenary members with their R4-R5 card. Just like Oskar who often tresspassing Duna's room.

I was speechless. Did Oskar lie to me? Even though I had his R4 card, he could still enter his house with his ID card.

"Or is there a portal around here?" I asked myself quietly. I don't know and I'm curious, but I'm also sleepy so I decided to turn off the bedroom lights and sleep.

The next morning I woke up to a very loud alarm from outside the house. According to the diary, the alarm was a sign that a Xenobeast had entered the base area.

"If you're not ready to fight, it's better to just stay at home," I whispered, reading the sentence in the diary.

"Huh?" Somehow this diary felt like it was talking to me. Duna's writing style was quite unique and felt familiar to me.

There were only bottles of water and soda in the fridge, but I found plenty of snacks in the cupboard. The contents of this cupboard are even much fuller than the contents of the refrigerator. Duna seems to prefer snacking than cooking. Well, that's not bad.

After the alarm stopped I heard a lot of footsteps and vehicles. Sometimes gunshots were heard. This atmosphere feels very uncomfortable. As if I am currently living in a war zone.

Knock knock. Someone knocked on the door. I immediately went there.

"You're awake?" Oskar asked as soon as I opened the door.

"Yes." I nodded.

"I've already gotten your new ID card, but it looks like there's been a bit of a system glitch here," Oskar said with a frown.

"..." I didn't know what to say. So I just looked at him with a confused expression.

"This is yours. Can you give me back my mercenary ID?" Oskar asked as he handed over a blue ID card with a white stripe on the left side.

"Oh, it's in the room. Come in first."

"Your habits don't seem to have changed," Oskar said as soon as he entered the house. I ignored him and rushed to get his mercenary ID.

"Do you still not remember anything?" Oskar asked right behind me. Suddenly I was shocked and turned around. He was right one step ahead of me. Since when did he enter the room? Why didn't I hear his footsteps?

"I'm sorry." I shook my head as I handed Oskar his mercenary ID. He took it, but his gaze remained locked on mine.

"Since when did you get married?" Oskar asked. He take my ID card and holding it up infront of my face.

I saw it clearly. Under the address it said that my status was married to Kylian Arthur.

"Who is Kylian Arthur?" I asked in surprise.

"That's what I want to ask. Why did you get involved with someone like him?" Oskar asked, sounding like he was shouting at me.

"I-I don't know," I answered slowly and stuttered a little. How would I know about this. Duna didn't even write in her diary that she was married.

"Argh." Oskar let out a harsh breath.

"I-I'm sorry," I said softly. This was all I could say to him.

Oskar was silent for a moment, but then he hugged me tightly. "I should be the one apologizing to you."

"..."

"The situation outside is still chaotic so stay at home for the next few days. I'll buy you some food."

"..."

"I'm going now." Oskar let go of his hug and smiled at me.

"..."

Seeing Oskar walk away and close the door made me wonder. What relationship does he have with Duna? However, this diary really doesn't write about that.

"Who is this Kylian Arthur?" I sighed and opened the desk drawer. I saw another mercenary ID with a logo that said JPN underneath.

"Huh? What's this?" I took the mercenary ID. The card was purple, unlike the WSS whose card was black.

On the mercenary ID it was written that Duna was an R4 administrator who held the position of militarist. Isn't this rank much higher than Duna's rank in WSS?

I can only conclude because this is not written in the diary either.

"Does Duna actually know what a diary is?" I complained.

After storing the ID Card and mercenary ID in the drawer, I took some packets of cookies from the cupboard and read the diary again.

If I look again, the first few pages have been torn. Maybe Duna used to write a diary, but suddenly made this book into a notebook. Starting from the Xenobeast category, mercenary system, base system, to how to use guns and laser swords.

January 27, 3043

Oskar was promoted to Colonel. He now has a patrol area and also a private residence in the military district. He told me that I was good at rollerblading, so I'd better focus my training on swords and daggers. The gun just weakens me. He said that even though he was also good at riding and using a gun at the same time. He's annoying.

"..." You could say, this is the only outpouring of her heart that I found in this diary.
