BAB 10 I You Are Not A Prisoner

Four days. Mia mumbles while pacing in her locked room. She did not think Jaxon had kept her prisoner for four days in the castle. She had never seen Jaxon since four days ago. It felt like she wanted to scream in frustration.

“Hey! I know someone is behind this door. Don’t pretend you didn’t hear me! I need the sun and fresh air!” She pounded on the door in front of her many times, but there was no response. She hated the feeling of helplessness.

Several times Mia banged on the door again until finally, she felt tired, then left the door and lay on the bed. That was her position when Jaxon entered the room a few hours later.

“Four days, Mr. Bradwood. You kept me prisoner for four days! “Mia slowly got up and sat opposite Jaxon, standing on the other side.

“I’m not holding you, Miss Heart. This is just a special treatment that I rarely give my guests.”

Mia was about to say something, but Jaxon gave a silent gesture with one hand raised.

“Before you say something that will only get you in trouble, you better listen to me first. Do you understand, Mia?”

Jaxon’s gaze showed that he was not playing games. Something was behind his intense eyes, making her swallow painfully and nod slowly.

“From now on, Denver is your place. You can’t leave Denver without my permission. I won’t lock you up like I have these days. Don’t worry, I’m not that cruel. You have the freedom to do anything while in Denver. You are not my prisoner. If you want to work, just work. You are free to choose a job here. I’ll also give you a place to live and other facilities, you can name it, I’ll take care of it all. But you can’t get out of Denver. This is my requirement for you to follow.”

Mia looked at Jaxon, full of terror. She felt panicked hearing Jaxon’s words.

Seeing the look on her face softened Jaxon’s stern expression.

“Am I in trouble?” Mia asked in a low, whispered voice.

“There’s nothing you need to worry about.”

“How can I not worry if you tell me to stay in Denver and stop me from leaving!”

Mia held her tongue to say no more. She was afraid that she would lose control over what she said.

“The old man who gave you this mission was found dead with two bullets lodged in his body after your departure.”

Jaxon’s words finally released the panic that had been haunting her. She didn’t realize that her body was shaking violently, and her vision blurred. Someone’s after her.

“How long do I have to live in Denver?” Her hoarse voice trembled slightly.

Jaxon could feel Mia’s panic, which he had never felt before, slowly entering his heart. The part of sympathy he thought had disappeared over time.

“I can’t predict it. There is nothing I can promise you.”

Without realizing it, Mia hugged her own body. Her arms were wrapped around her stomach.

Jaxon heavily forced himself to look away from the helpless girl in front of him. Gavin’s words about the gentle creature rang in his ears.

His gaze focused on the food in the trolley, untouched.

“Have you eaten?” asked Jaxon as he approached the trolley and took a plate filled with bread.

Mia shook her head weakly. She was still deep in thought. She was tired of always playing hide and seek with the past. This time Mia believes her past is back after her, and if the information from Jaxon is correct, then she won’t be able to return to Blueberry Hill.

“Do you know who ... killed that man?” It feels like Mia can’t bear to say the word kill. Although Jaxon did not tell the cause of the man’s death, Mia was not naive. Mia has been in a situation like this. In the past, she saw one of her bodyguards die half-intact.

“Just worry about yourself. Let me take care of it, Mia.”

Mia didn’t answer. She didn’t know what to say. Thanking him is not the right thing.

A plate was thrust in front of her. Although reluctant to accept, Mia realized that she was hungry. Jaxon’s big body forced her to move to give the manned space to sit with her side by side on the bed.

“Living in Denver is not that bad.”

Jaxon’s words brought Mia’s gaze to his face. For a long time, she watched every line of his face. If Gavin has a handsome face that can be called beauty, then Jaxon is more like masculine handsomeness.

“I prefer the Blueberry Hill atmosphere.” Mia lowered her gaze as Jaxon stared at her. Now Jaxon turned to watch Mia. Both seemed to take turns stealing glances.

“Whatever is after you, Miss Heart, I’m still going to force you to be in Denver.”

“Why?”

“Because your mission isn’t finished. The envelope is only the beginning.”

Since the first time she was given the task of being a courier, Mia was always curious about the envelope’s contents, but fear overcame her. She had been tempted to open the yellow envelope several times during her trip to Denver.

“What’s in ....”

“Trust me, you will not get that answer from me. Don’t try to discuss the envelope in our conversation.”

Jaxon’s interrupting voice silenced Mia. From Jaxon’s tone speaking, Mia also didn’t want to know about the contents of the envelope. Like Pandora, it would be better if she was not curious about its contents, considering the results would not be good. What’s more, the thing that Jaxon Bradwood is dealing with is not something sweet but dark and full of violence.

Again Jaxon handed her a plate with other food. Without realizing it, Mia had finished the four dishes that were given. Her eyebrows rise slightly to find Jaxon’s grin. The man deliberately shifts her focus by continuing to talk to him, so she can eat without realizing all of it.

“Rest, Miss Heart. There are so many things waiting for the future,” said Jaxon as he left the room. “This room is no longer locked. Feel free to roam around. We can discuss it again tomorrow. It’s too late now. “

Mia stared at the door that had just closed. This time she didn’t hear the usual key sound, making her believe what Jaxon said. Even though she was restless about what she had just learned, the warmth at least touched her heart after Jaxon handled her situation and a full stomach made her feel more content.
