IRIS'S POV

PLAN IN MOTION

His expression didn’t change, but I saw something flicker behind his eyes. Hurt, maybe? Or regret? He opened his mouth to respond, but whatever he was going to say, it was cut off by the sound of Helen clearing her throat softly from across the room.

I turned, and she gave me a look, time to go. We didn’t have the luxury of dwelling on family drama right now. The moon was rising, and our plan needed to be set into motion.

“We’ll talk later,” I said to my father, my voice flat, though we both knew that “later” might never come.

He nodded, though I could tell he wasn’t satisfied with how things had ended. Neither was I. But we didn’t have time to fix it, not tonight.

As I walked toward Helen, I could still feel his eyes on me, but I didn’t look back. There were bigger things at play now, things that wouldn’t wait for me to patch up the fractures in my family.

Helen gave me a small, sympathetic smile as I joined her. “Everything okay?”

I shrugged. “It will be.”
