While the officer was busy tracking Summer, Sky's phone rang. Seeing an unknown number contacting her via video call, her breath hitched.
Could it be a kidnapper asking for compensation? Or was it a good person who accidentally found her daughter?
Sky answered the call with a pounding heart. However, when she saw the face that appeared, her anxiety vanished. Her eyes widened, reflecting astonishment and surprise.
“L-Louis?”
Louis had actually frowned before. He was ready to vent his anger at Sky, demanding accountability for the mess her daughter had caused.
However, when the beautiful face covered in tears received his video call, his anger faded. A feeling of pity and longing arose from the corner of his heart.
“Sky,” his tongue was numb at the name.
Sky blinked. Looking down, she wiped her eyes. She didn't want Louis to know about her anxiety. She wasn't ready for her status as a single mother to be revealed.
“Hi, Louis. Long time no see. What’s up? Shouldn’t you be happy with your future wife? Emily said you proposed to Grace Evans today.” She forced a smile.
“Are you crying?”
Louis sounded so gentle. Sky hadn't heard that voice in a long time.
“What? Crying? No, I’m not crying. Something just got in my eye. The tears just came out on their own.”
“Are you crying because of Summer?”
Sky froze for a moment. Time seemed to stop, and her brain fought hard not to lose its function. “S-Summer? How do you know that name?”
Louis let out a faint sigh. He realized that Sky had been trying to keep Summer a secret. Not knowing what to say, he turned his phone camera around.
Seeing her little daughter sitting sweetly on a couch, Sky's eyes almost popped out. She got up from the chair. One of her hands went up to cover her mouth. The police officers there were surprised by her reaction.
“Summer? What are you doing there?” Sky yelled, raising an eyebrow at the officer handling her report.
Seeing her mother's face, Summer chuckled. Her shoulders rose to pinch her neck. Her legs swayed like a swimmer.
“Hello, Mommy. Sorry if I made you panic. I had to leave without saying goodbye. You would not have allowed me if you knew I was going to see Uncle Louis.”
"What do you see him for?"
“I wanted to ruin his proposal. I don't agree if he marries Miss Evans.”
Sky sighed in disbelief. With her eyes closed, she tried to control her emotions. That's when the police officer asked, “Has your daughter been found?”
Sky nodded. Her expression was hard to describe. “Yes. Sorry for wasting your time, Sir.”
“No problem, Ma’am. Children are sometimes hard to control. Where is she?”
“T City.”
“T City?” The officer tilted his head. His eyes flickered as he searched his memory. When he came to a conclusion, his eyes widened. “Your daughter is in another country?”
Sky nodded. After filling her lungs with patience, she pointed her index finger at the camera.
“Summer, do you realize that you have made a big mistake?”
The toddler pursed her lips. “I know I shouldn’t travel far by myself. But if I didn’t do it, Uncle Louis would end up marrying someone else. I want him to marry you, Mommy. I want him to be part of our family, so I can call him Daddy. And look at the result! I succeeded, Mommy. Miss Evans didn’t accept the proposal. You got the chance to marry Uncle Louis, taking her place!”
Sky swallowed bitterly. Her thoughts and feelings were too complicated.
However, she didn't want to show it, let alone discuss it.
“Wait there and be a good kid. Don’t bother Uncle Louis. Mommy will pick you up soon.”
“No way, Mommy. You won’t be allowed to fly.”
Sky's head was pushed back. “Why?”
“Because I’ve hidden your passport in a safe place,” Summer answered innocently.
Sky gaped. She couldn’t believe what her daughter had done. “Why did you do that, Summer?”
“Because I will not go home until my mission is fulfilled. Uncle Louis must agree to be my daddy.”
Sky winced in embarrassment. When she was about to scold Summer, the camera turned to face Louis. Sky became increasingly embarrassed in front of him.
“I’m sorry. I never thought Summer could think and act that far. I know this is selfish, but ... can you take care of her for a while? I’ll go there as soon as my passport is found,” she said weakly.
Louis was lost in thought. He actually had a ton of questions for Sky. Why did she disappear, why did she break her promise, how did she become a single mother, and who was Summer's father?
He was also curious about why Sky kept all of them a secret, but he couldn't ask. It was no longer his right. Moreover, he had a heart to guard now.
“Okay,” Louis sighed in resignation. “I hope your passport is found soon. I’ll do my best to talk to Summer. Maybe she’ll tell me where she keeps your passport.”
“No way! Until you agree to marry Mommy, I won’t tell you!”
Sky closed her eyes at her daughter’s voice. She couldn’t be any more embarrassed.
“I hope you can be patient with her, Louis. Thank you for taking care of Summer. Now I have to go home and find the passport she hid.”
Louis nodded stiffly. After ending the call, he looked back at Summer with a frown. “Where did you hide your mother’s passport?”
Summer put on an innocent face. “Didn’t I tell you I wouldn’t tell? Unless you promise to propose to Mommy. Or, how about you taking me home? You and Mommy can spend some time together in Canada.”
“Do you think my life is that easy? I don’t have time to waste. I have a big company to take care of. I also have to apologize to my girlfriend. You’ve made her mad, you remember?” Louis was irritated again. Could he stand the toddler until her mother came?
“Spending time with Mommy is not a waste, Sir. Mommy is a wonderful woman. You can talk to her about anything. She knows everything! If you two are talking, I promise not to disturb you. I can play in the yard by myself. Besides,” Summer took a deep breath.“Didn’t you two use to be best friends? I heard that you used to play and go on vacation together. I think Mommy would be very happy if you guys could relive the good times. Even now, Mommy still talks about it often. She really enjoyed your friendship. With Aunt Emily and Uncle Russell too!”Louis fell silent for a moment. The times Summer had mentioned flashed through his mind. But in the blink of an eye, he buried them again.“Sorry, I don’t have time for that. Besides, it’s all been a long time. Even if I did it again, nothing would change. I still can’t marry your mother. The one I love now is Grace Evans. She’s the one I’m going to marry.”Summer pouted. Her eyes were suddenly thick and shadowy. Before she could express her an
“I don’t think so,” Summer shook her head slowly. “In my opinion, Grace is a cold and stiff person. She’s the exact opposite of Mommy. People always say that Mommy is fun and cheerful. She likes to entertain others. In all the years you’ve been friends with Mommy, haven’t you noticed that?”Louis subconsciously scratched his nose. He felt uncomfortable with the question. “Did you just belittle my girlfriend?”“I did not belittle her. I just want to say that Mommy is great too. She’s also worthy of you marrying, and I think you’re more compatible with Mommy.”With a quick grunt, Louis straightened up. He was much bigger than Summer. There was no way he could be less powerful than her.“You are so stubborn. There is no point in us talking. I'd better get some rest.”Summer stared at Louis as he walked away. “Sir, where are you going?”"Rest!"“What about me? I am a guest here. It would be rude of you to ignore me.”Summer put her hands on her hips and tilted her head. She didn't realize
“Wait a minute,” Louis flinched. “What am I doing? Why am I watching over that little human? Even though she is the daughter of Sky, she has nothing to do with me. Is this because of humanity?”Not wanting to think of any other reasons, Louis forced himself to believe it.“Yes, I am watching her out of humanity. I am a good guy. I could not possibly abandon a little child even if she was very annoying.”Meanwhile, Summer had returned to the living room. She tidied up her bag, then combed her curly hair with difficulty. Louis's little heart was moved to help. But once again, he ignored the intention.Shortly after lying in the sleeping bag, Summer fell asleep. She occasionally scratched her neck. Seeing that, Louis worried again.“Isn’t it uncomfortable? She shouldn’t be using a sleeping bag in a room like that.”As he kept staring at Summer, Louis was lost in thought. Slowly, he began to realize.Although he hated what Summer had done, he couldn't blame her. Maybe the little girl was a
Louis’ breath hitched, his eyebrows knitted. A strange feeling rose in his chest. But after clenching his fist, he got his mind back on track.“You don’t have to worry, Ace. Sky and her daughter had nothing to do with it. You trust me, right? There’s no way I could sleep with just any girl. The scandal was a setup. Someone was trying to ruin my reputation. It was all a trick.”Grace didn’t answer. Louis could imagine her pretty eyebrows furrowing in annoyance. He added, “Summer won’t be here long. Sky will pick her up soon.”“So her name is Summer? You guys have been close, huh? Do you consider her your own child? Have you forgotten what she did to us?”Louis sighed heavily. “Ace, I know you must be upset that Summer ruined the proposal. So am I. But we can’t blame her. She’s just a child who misses her father.”“You’re right. It’s not her to blame, but her mother. She didn’t do a good job of looking after her child.”Louis fell silent for a moment. He had to be careful in choosing the
“Anyway, how was your sleep, Uncle? Did you sleep well too? I think so. Otherwise, there's no way you would have snored so loudly. Actually, I woke up because of it. I thought there was a frog near my ear, so I opened my eyes. Apparently, it was you! But I didn't mind you waking me up, because last night was a good night. I felt like I was sleeping with my own father! I will never forget that experience," Summer nodded with a beaming face. Meanwhile, Louis took a deep breath. He never knew a toddler could speak so fluently and without a pause. "Please don't misunderstand. I moved you here not because we're close, but because I'm a good person. I can't abandon a child. If the paparazzi recorded me, my good name would be ruined." "What's a parapazi?" Summer asked through her pursed lips. “Paparazzi,” Louis corrected. “People who take photos secretly to share through the media. They usually aim their cameras at famous people. The people they photograph can suffer.” "Oh, that's a
"Ace," Louis sighed as he lowered his phone from in front of his face. He didn't care if his conversation with Sky hadn't been over. Grace's feelings were his priority. Instead of responding, Grace turned to leave. Seeing that, Louis spontaneously jumped out of bed. "Ace, wait." He held her arm. "Please don't misunderstand. Just hear me out." "What else do I need to hear? Isn't it all clear?" Grace pushed Louis' hand off her arm. "You said you would handle that brat. But look at the reality! You two are getting closer. You even slept with her last night!" Her ragged breathing made the atmosphere even more tense. Louis shook his head slightly. His eyes narrowed in disbelief. "Are you jealous of a little girl? Come on, Ace. She's not even five." "Don't play dumb, Louis. Do you think I don't know? You're starting to think of her as your daughter. So what are you going to do after this? Leave me to marry her mother?" "Ace," Louis held Grace's shoulders and looked at her gently, "pl
Louis stopped. Something in his heart kept him from moving. However, when he was about to turn around, Grace caught his hand. "Have you changed your mind?" Grace asked with a threatening expression. Louis took a deep breath. Taking her hand, he finally looked forward. "Let's go get breakfast." Meanwhile, two guards had stopped Summer. Seeing the little girl struggling, the oldest servant tried to calm her down. "Please don't chase after Mr. Harper, Little Lady. He has some business outside. How about having breakfast? My friends and I have prepared lots of delicious food for you." However, Summer kept struggling. Her head moved around, looking for traces of Louis. "Uncle Louis, please don't leave me. I want to go with you. Uncle Louis!" Louis heard the heartbreaking voice, but he ignored it. As the elevator doors began to close, Summer finally burst into tears. She no longer fought back. Sobbing, she wiped her eyes with her arms. "Uncle Louis, why did you ignore me? I s
"You're bleeding," Louis murmured as he examined Summer's hand. Summer glanced at her palm. Turned out, there were some scratches there. "Does it hurt?" Louis asked. Summer nodded. "But I've fallen a lot. That's why I carry plasters and antiseptic in my bag," she said between sobs. Louis smiled wryly. He took a look at Summer's knees. There were dust spots on her jumpsuit. "Come here. Sit." Louis, still half-kneeling, lifted the toddler onto his lap. With one hand, he rolled up her pants to her knees. As expected, he found scratches on her skin. "Are there any other injuries besides this?" he asked softly. Summer lifted one of her legs with furrowed brows. Her back was slightly hunched. "I think I have a hole in the sole of my foot. I accidentally stepped on something sharp. It hurts right down to the bone." Hearing that, Louis rushed to check. Finding the sole of her tiny foot full of red spots, he let out a sigh of relief. "Your foot doesn't have a hole, Summer
Sky listened to her daughter intently. Once Summer finished, she winced."Please forgive my negligence and Summer's carelessness, Sir. I didn't think she could run in a place like this. She had promised to be careful.""It was because of the alarm, Mommy. It wasn't entirely my fault. I ran to save myself," Summer whispered while nudging her mother's leg."Still, Honey. You wouldn't have bumped into Mr. Harper if you had been more careful. You should have looked ahead when you were running.""That's because I have to be alert. I thought it was a fire alarm. Of course I have to get away from the fire," she grumbled with pursed lips.Watching the mother and daughter argue, Kara smiled. "Sky, I'm so happy to meet you again. Especially, since you brought your cute daughter. Do you want to go upstairs? We can talk more freely up there.""What's up there?" Summer asked while standing on her tiptoes. "Is it a meeting room? Aunt Emily once told me that people gathered in that room to talk abou
Hearing her mother's name, Summer blinked. With Kara's help, she sat up."Oh, my arms must have been injured again," she muttered while checking her left elbow. As it turned out, her guess was right. Her skin was already red."Oh my .... Your elbow is bruised. Please forgive my husband, Sweetheart. We were in a hurry. He must not have seen you. Usually, there are no children running around here," Kara said softly. Her hand was stroking the little girl's hair. With attention fixed on her wound, Summer murmured, "It's okay, Ma'am. I am the one who wasn't careful enough. I ran because I thought there was a fire. The alarm sounded really loud. I had to find Mommy and get out to a safe zone."Kara felt even more guilty hearing the innocent confession. "That wasn't a fire alarm, Sweetheart. It was a warning about a press raid, and everyone needs to be alert."Summer's eyes immediately rounded. "That wasn't a fire?"She finally looked at the beautiful woman. That's when another surprise came
"Are you more afraid of Orion than me?" Grace raised an eyebrow. The secretary lowered her head even more. "It's not like that, Miss. I just—"Suddenly, Grace grabbed a piece of paper and a pen. She put both items in front of the secretary."You don't have to say it. Just write it down," Grace insisted, curtly. The secretary hesitated for a moment. However, unable to stand Grace's intimidating aura, she finally complied.Unfortunately, when Grace found out Orion's message, the atmosphere worsened. She slammed her fist on the table. Her shoulders heaved up and down, shaking with anger."That filthy woman ...." she groaned, furious. "I will never let her take Louis away from me. Never!"***"Mommy, is that where Uncle Louis and Aunt Emily work?" Summer asked as she pressed her face against the car window.Sky smiled slightly. "Yes, Honey. That's the Savior Group headquarters.""Wow! That building is huge, Mommy. I think there are thousands of people working there," Summer said in awe.A
Orion said, "Sky was already in M City the night you were involved in the scandal. She went to the hotel where you were hanging out with your friends."Louis' breathing became heavier. "Then? What else did you hear?""It seems like Sky still kept it from Emily. Emily was also wondering why Sky didn't come to your graduation the next morning. In fact, in their last conversation, Sky was still excited about attending."Louis' brows furrowed more deeply. His face looked older now. "How did Emily know Sky was there?" he mumbled softly."I don't know. Emily didn't mention it. She just told Cayden her assumption."Louis' eyes widened. "What assumption?""She thought Sky ran away because of you."Orion's answer successfully strangled Louis' neck. He was starting to have trouble breathing. Bad possibilities appeared in his mind."Did Sky leave because I kicked her out while I was drunk? Or, did she disappear because she was heartbroken to find out about my scandal? Did she really love me? Or
The secretary swallowed hard. She glanced at Louis. Her voice lowered, "Sorry, Sir. I didn't really want to interrupt, but the other Mr. Harper insisted me on giving this to you."The secretary slipped a piece of paper into Louis' hand. Instead of examining it, Louis narrowed his eyes. "The other Mr. Harper?""Mr. Orion."Louis flinched slightly. How important was the information Orion wanted to convey that he dared to interrupt the press conference in such a way? After signalling his secretary to leave, Louis unfolded the paper. A sentence was written on it."She was in the same hotel as you were that night!"In an instant, Louis' breath caught. All his nerves tensed. His eyes trembled violently, trying to find the lost memory.Unfortunately, he found no clues. What happened that night seemed to be permanently erased from his brain."Sky was in M City that night? She was in the same hotel as I was? Could it be ... she was that girl? And Summer is my daughter?" Louis thought as he gri
"Was that Orion?" Grace inquired while furrowing eyebrows.Louis nodded. "He said there was also a commotion in the office. He advised me to handle it immediately.""Does it mean that my decision to move the schedule forward was right?" Grace asked for confirmation."Yes," Louis replied stiffly, "I think it was right. Now our job is to make the reporters believe us. They should no longer doubt our relationship.""You know what, Louis? I have a very good idea to control public opinion quickly and efficiently."Louis raised an eyebrow, interested. Just as Grace was about to explain, his phone rang again. Knowing Orion's name appeared on the screen, his face turned grim.Meanwhile, Grace blinked stiffly. Her suspicions arose."Why did he call you again?" she inquired.Louis took a deep breath. "I don't know." He rejected Orion's call."What were you guys talking about just now? Wasn't your chat over? You also said you would announce the clarification soon. He shouldn't call you again."Lo
With a faint sigh, Louis forced his head up. However, his mind was too heavy. As a result, he could only see the secretary from the corner of his reddened eyes."I'm fine. Thank you for giving me these. You can get out now," he said coldly. The young woman across the table quickly straightened up her back. Tension enveloped her nerves. "Okay, Sir. Excuse me."As the door closed again, Louis reached for his phone. He could no longer pretend to be indifferent. He had to call Summer immediately, find a way to make up for his mistake towards her.Unfortunately, the toddler's number was not active. Louis contacted Sky, but his efforts were still in vain."Are they on a flight, so their phones were turned off?" Louis thought, restless. After a quick calculation, disappointment appeared on his face. "Am I not destined to be close to Summer? Could it be that God did not allow me to contact her in order to protect Grace's feelings?"While Louis was guessing, a call came to his phone. He flinche
Failing to erase the shadow of Summer, Louis got up from bed. He went to the kitchen, wanting to grab a cold drink. Maybe it could refresh his common sense so that he would be more awake. However, as soon as he opened the refrigerator, his body froze. His gaze fell on a pack of milk that was labeled."Summer's!" That was the warning written on it.Remembering what the toddler did when she first arrived at the penthouse, Louis smiled wryly. He didn't realize that his tears began to well up in his eyes."That little human ...." Louis swallowed bitterly. "She should have said goodbye to me before she left."Instead of getting iced water, Louis closed the refrigerator. He left the kitchen, going to the guest room. There, he was lost in thought again. He stood near the light switch. His eyes kept focusing on the bed as if Summer was lying there. When he realized that all he saw was just a shadow, he snorted sadly."She's not here anymore, but how can she still bother me?"While looking down
"Honey," Sky whispered after a moment of silence, "do you still hope that I'll marry someone? Do you still want ... to have a daddy?"Summer blinked innocently. "Why did you ask that, Mommy? Have you changed your mind? Do you want to marry Uncle Louis now? But Uncle Louis is going to marry Grace soon. He can't be my daddy anymore.""No, Honey. Not Uncle Louis," Sky whimpered. "If you really want a daddy, I can work for you. I'll find a boyfriend. Maybe there's someone out there who's willing to marry me and be your daddy.""No, Mommy," Summer refused firmly. "I'm not interested in having a daddy anymore."Sky's eyes widened. "Why?""I don't want people to think you're a bad person."Sky's chest suddenly felt tight. Her lungs constricted, trapped by sadness that was hard to describe."Honey," Sky stroked Summer's chubby cheeks that looked a little shrunken, "why do you think so? I can find a man who doesn't have a girlfriend. No one will think I'm bad if I dated a single man."However,
