“I don’t think so,” Summer shook her head slowly. “In my opinion, Grace is a cold and stiff person. She’s the exact opposite of Mommy. People always say that Mommy is fun and cheerful. She likes to entertain others. In all the years you’ve been friends with Mommy, haven’t you noticed that?”
Louis subconsciously scratched his nose. He felt uncomfortable with the question. “Did you just belittle my girlfriend?”
“I did not belittle her. I just want to say that Mommy is great too. She’s also worthy of you marrying, and I think you’re more compatible with Mommy.”
With a quick grunt, Louis straightened up. He was much bigger than Summer. There was no way he could be less powerful than her.
“You are so stubborn. There is no point in us talking. I'd better get some rest.”
Summer stared at Louis as he walked away. “Sir, where are you going?”
"Rest!"
“What about me? I am a guest here. It would be rude of you to ignore me.”
Summer put her hands on her hips and tilted her head. She didn't realize that her nagging sounded more cute than scary.
“You are an uninvited guest. Why should I serve you? Besides, you said you could take care of yourself. So, just do it. I am tired.”
Summer opened her mouth, about to argue. However, Louis had already entered his bedroom, and closed the door tightly. Summer could only blink, studying the situation.
“It seems like Uncle Louis is mad at me. Is it a bad sign?” she muttered to herself. After a moment of silence, she puffed out her cheeks.
“At least, I managed to cancel the proposal. He will not marry Grace. I just have to convince him that Mommy can be a good wife for him, and I can be a sweet daughter for him. Now, what should I do?”
Summer looked around while tapping her chin with her index finger. “It’s already late, and I’ve been on a long journey. I should rest too, but where should I sleep?”
After blinking for a moment, Summer took out her sleeping bag, and spread it out on the couch.
“This is softer than the ground. I’ll definitely sleep well tonight. But before that,” she rubbed her stomach.
“I think I should recharge my energy. It’s way past dinner time. I need to wash my hands, eat, wash my face, and brush my teeth. After that, I can get a good night’s sleep. So, where’s the sink?”
While Summer explored the other rooms, Louis paced back and forth in his bedroom. His heart was restless. His mind was too full of questions.
“What is actually going on? Sky has been gone for so long, but why did she come back now? Does she object to me marrying Grace? She deliberately sent Summer here to change my mind?”
Ruffling his hair, Louis let out a quick sigh. Summer's face was now filling his mind.
“Based on Summer’s age, Sky must have done it around that time. Is that why she broke her promise to me? She had a one-night stand, and preferred to spend time with another man rather than attend my graduation? Who is the father of that rebellious toddler? What do I not know?”
Sitting on the edge of the bed, Louis began banging his head with his fist. His eyes were closed, his eyebrows furrowed. He knew he couldn't let his thoughts get the better of him.
“No. Sky can’t be that evil. The problem is not her, but that little creature. If she really wanted a father, why didn’t she just find her biological father? Why did she ruin my plan? If she hadn't come, I would have been happy with Grace.”
After a moment of silence, Louis nodded firmly. “Yeah, that stubbornness and arbitrariness ... she must have inherited those annoying attitudes from her father. It’s not Sky who’s at fault, but Summer and her father!”
Sighing heavily, Louis sealed his conclusion. “So, what’s she doing now? She’s not destroying my house, is she?”
Louis took his phone, checking the surveillance camera. Not finding Summer in the living room, he flinched. “Where did she go?”
Louis checked the other cameras. Finding Summer washing her hands on the kitchen sink, his eyebrows raised.
“She moved the chair so she could reach the tap? She’s smart, apparently.”
As Louis watched her movements, Summer looked cheerful and adorable. Louis didn't realize that his lips curled up slightly at that sight. Only when Summer took her lunch box to the refrigerator did he raise his eyebrows again.
“What is she looking for? Is she planning to steal food?”
Unexpectedly, the little girl put two cartons of milk in the refrigerator. After that, she sat down at the dining table. She enjoyed the bread she bought at the airport. Her head nodded happily.
“Is that piece of bread enough for her?” Louis muttered. “I think it's too little. She must be still hungry after eating.”
Louis subconsciously pitied her. But when he came to his senses, he quickly shook his head.
“Why should I care about her? She is not my daughter. She is the jinx in my relationship with Grace. I should not pity her.”
After eating, Summer opened the refrigerator again. She took a carton of milk from there, and brought it to the table.
“It’s not even cold yet. Why is she drinking it?” Louis grumbled, trying to sound nonchalant.
But as Summer cleared the table and put the chairs back in their places, Louis couldn't deny that he was fascinated. As the toddler carried a towel, pajamas, and toothbrush into the bathroom, he couldn't deny that he felt a little worried.
A lot could happen there. Summer could have slipped, hit her head, or hurt her knee. Only when the toddler came out in cute deer pajamas did Louis breathe a sigh of relief.
“She can really take care of herself? Thank goodness.”
Louis nodded proudly. However, realizing what he had just said, his smile fell back to a flat one.
Did Louis start to care about Summer? What happened next?
“Wait a minute,” Louis flinched. “What am I doing? Why am I watching over that little human? Even though she is the daughter of Sky, she has nothing to do with me. Is this because of humanity?”Not wanting to think of any other reasons, Louis forced himself to believe it.“Yes, I am watching her out of humanity. I am a good guy. I could not possibly abandon a little child even if she was very annoying.”Meanwhile, Summer had returned to the living room. She tidied up her bag, then combed her curly hair with difficulty. Louis's little heart was moved to help. But once again, he ignored the intention.Shortly after lying in the sleeping bag, Summer fell asleep. She occasionally scratched her neck. Seeing that, Louis worried again.“Isn’t it uncomfortable? She shouldn’t be using a sleeping bag in a room like that.”As he kept staring at Summer, Louis was lost in thought. Slowly, he began to realize.Although he hated what Summer had done, he couldn't blame her. Maybe the little girl was a
Louis’ breath hitched, his eyebrows knitted. A strange feeling rose in his chest. But after clenching his fist, he got his mind back on track.“You don’t have to worry, Ace. Sky and her daughter had nothing to do with it. You trust me, right? There’s no way I could sleep with just any girl. The scandal was a setup. Someone was trying to ruin my reputation. It was all a trick.”Grace didn’t answer. Louis could imagine her pretty eyebrows furrowing in annoyance. He added, “Summer won’t be here long. Sky will pick her up soon.”“So her name is Summer? You guys have been close, huh? Do you consider her your own child? Have you forgotten what she did to us?”Louis sighed heavily. “Ace, I know you must be upset that Summer ruined the proposal. So am I. But we can’t blame her. She’s just a child who misses her father.”“You’re right. It’s not her to blame, but her mother. She didn’t do a good job of looking after her child.”Louis fell silent for a moment. He had to be careful in choosing the
“Anyway, how was your sleep, Uncle? Did you sleep well too? I think so. Otherwise, there's no way you would have snored so loudly. Actually, I woke up because of it. I thought there was a frog near my ear, so I opened my eyes. Apparently, it was you! But I didn't mind you waking me up, because last night was a good night. I felt like I was sleeping with my own father! I will never forget that experience," Summer nodded with a beaming face. Meanwhile, Louis took a deep breath. He never knew a toddler could speak so fluently and without a pause. "Please don't misunderstand. I moved you here not because we're close, but because I'm a good person. I can't abandon a child. If the paparazzi recorded me, my good name would be ruined." "What's a parapazi?" Summer asked through her pursed lips. “Paparazzi,” Louis corrected. “People who take photos secretly to share through the media. They usually aim their cameras at famous people. The people they photograph can suffer.” "Oh, that's a
"Ace," Louis sighed as he lowered his phone from in front of his face. He didn't care if his conversation with Sky hadn't been over. Grace's feelings were his priority. Instead of responding, Grace turned to leave. Seeing that, Louis spontaneously jumped out of bed. "Ace, wait." He held her arm. "Please don't misunderstand. Just hear me out." "What else do I need to hear? Isn't it all clear?" Grace pushed Louis' hand off her arm. "You said you would handle that brat. But look at the reality! You two are getting closer. You even slept with her last night!" Her ragged breathing made the atmosphere even more tense. Louis shook his head slightly. His eyes narrowed in disbelief. "Are you jealous of a little girl? Come on, Ace. She's not even five." "Don't play dumb, Louis. Do you think I don't know? You're starting to think of her as your daughter. So what are you going to do after this? Leave me to marry her mother?" "Ace," Louis held Grace's shoulders and looked at her gently, "pl
Louis stopped. Something in his heart kept him from moving. However, when he was about to turn around, Grace caught his hand. "Have you changed your mind?" Grace asked with a threatening expression. Louis took a deep breath. Taking her hand, he finally looked forward. "Let's go get breakfast." Meanwhile, two guards had stopped Summer. Seeing the little girl struggling, the oldest servant tried to calm her down. "Please don't chase after Mr. Harper, Little Lady. He has some business outside. How about having breakfast? My friends and I have prepared lots of delicious food for you." However, Summer kept struggling. Her head moved around, looking for traces of Louis. "Uncle Louis, please don't leave me. I want to go with you. Uncle Louis!" Louis heard the heartbreaking voice, but he ignored it. As the elevator doors began to close, Summer finally burst into tears. She no longer fought back. Sobbing, she wiped her eyes with her arms. "Uncle Louis, why did you ignore me? I s
"You're bleeding," Louis murmured as he examined Summer's hand. Summer glanced at her palm. Turned out, there were some scratches there. "Does it hurt?" Louis asked. Summer nodded. "But I've fallen a lot. That's why I carry plasters and antiseptic in my bag," she said between sobs. Louis smiled wryly. He took a look at Summer's knees. There were dust spots on her jumpsuit. "Come here. Sit." Louis, still half-kneeling, lifted the toddler onto his lap. With one hand, he rolled up her pants to her knees. As expected, he found scratches on her skin. "Are there any other injuries besides this?" he asked softly. Summer lifted one of her legs with furrowed brows. Her back was slightly hunched. "I think I have a hole in the sole of my foot. I accidentally stepped on something sharp. It hurts right down to the bone." Hearing that, Louis rushed to check. Finding the sole of her tiny foot full of red spots, he let out a sigh of relief. "Your foot doesn't have a hole, Summer
"Then what else? Pick a few," Louis said stiffly. He felt silly for trying to match Summer's taste to his. "Oh, this is difficult. I like food. I can eat everything heartily, except for those curly greens. I don't really like broccoli, but Mommy said it has a lot of benefits. So, I'm forced to eat it." Louis froze again. It was exactly the same as what he had experienced when he was a child. "But Uncle Louis," Summer's voice made him blink, "is all this food safe? I mean, no almonds or shrimps, right?" Louis' eyes were as wide as they could be. He knew that Sky was allergic to almonds. It was very possible that it was inherited to Summer. But shrimps? Why was Summer afraid of shrimps? "What's with the almonds and shrimps?" Louis acted stupid. "They're bad, Uncle. They can make me itchy and short of breath." Louis tried not to change his expression. However, his mind was too noisy with questions. His forehead frowned even more. Who was Summer actually? Why did she have s
After breakfast, Louis took Summer to his study room. There, they sat facing each other. A book was spread out on the table, right in front of Louis. "What are we going to do here, Uncle? Are we going to play? Or are you going to teach me about business?" Summer smiled sweetly. Her hands were folded neatly under her chin. The table was indeed too high for her. "I'm here to help you," Louis said as he uncapped a pen. "Can you tell me the criteria of a father you want?" "What is criteria?" Summer tilted her head. "Criteria are standards or measurements used to determine something. In short, what kind of father do you want?" Summer's eyes lit up instantly. She thought Louis was learning to be a good father to her. "I want to have a father like you!" "Can you describe it in more detail? What do you like about me?" Summer pointed out her finger. "First, you are handsome and cool. You will make a good couple with Mommy, even though Mommy needs to dress up a little." Louis
Thinking that Summer was so cute, Brandon stroked her curly hair. "Briony loves you very much, Summer. If you apologize sincerely, she will forgive you.""And promise not to do it again!" River added quickly. "I always say that every time Uncle Brandon gets angry. He always forgives me afterward. The important thing is that my tone sounds sincere, and my face is pitiful. Sometimes, I even shed a few tears so that he feels sorry."Brandon glanced at his nephew. "All this time, you weren't sincere when you apologized? You were just pretending so that I would forgive you?"River chuckled. With a sweet smile, he massaged Brandon's shoulders. "I'm sincere, Uncle. I love you.""We'll talk about that later. Now, help Summer apologize to Briony."River nodded quickly. "Yes, Commander!" Then, he grabbed the little girl's hand."Summer, let's see your aunt!"&nb
Feeling sorry, Brandon finally spoke up. "Summer, River, stop. If you want to help, please push the rope in the opposite direction from under my back."Oh, that's right. If we want to untie the rope, we have to move the rope in the opposite direction," Summer muttered, agreeing. "River, let's take action!""Ready, Commander!" River crouched on the grass, preparing to push the rope under Brandon's back. "Uncle, Auntie, come on, lift your bodies!"Briony's eyebrows were knitted together again. "How do we do it? Should I—wow!"Brandon lifted his back up and supported his weight on his elbows. Briony's body automatically lifted. She quickly pressed the ground with her hands. With her back arched back like that, she looked like she was doing yoga."River, quickly push the rope. Summer, you pull the rope from this side," Brandon instructed.Instead of carrying out her task, Summer took out her phone. "Wait a minute. Your pose is funny. This needs to be documented. River, please step aside f
Summer's laughter echoed again. "Sorry, Auntie. I'm not ignoring you. It's just that I'm afraid you'll get tired. Moving the rope takes a lot of energy.""Do you want to try it? I don't mind you taking my job. But, are you strong enough?" Brandon teased.Briony narrowed her eyes. "Do you think I'm weak?""This rope is quite heavy. Your arms will get sore if you do it for a long time," Brandon shrugged his shoulders.Briony sighed in disbelief. She couldn't accept Brandon, considering her weak. Before the two adults argued, Summer intervened, "If you want to try it, take a few more steps, Auntie. We do need a variety of data."Briony agreed without any suspicion. At that moment, the children glanced at each other meaningfully.Once Briony finished her task, Summer stepped forward to give further instructions. While the adults were distract
River looked at the monitor. Finding two children who were busy arranging popsicle sticks on the ground, his laughter escaped."It looks like they are making a craft stick chain reaction," he muttered.Briony's eyebrows arched high. "How did you know?""I made it with Louis and Emily once."Briony smiled faintly. "Your memories with Emily seem to be memorable."Brandon's eyes immediately narrowed. "Are you teasing me again?""No," Briony waved her hand. "I'm just stating the truth."Brandon's smile turned fragile. His eyes were a little misty. "Well, you're right. I have many memories with Emily, and also Louis. Please don't forget the last statement. I don't want any misunderstandings. Besides, I've moved on. How many times do I have to repeat it for you to believe me?"Briony laughed in satisfaction. "Okay, I believe you. Congratulations, Mr. Young. You have successfully emerged from the shadow of the past."Brandon snorted sarcastically. But then, he laughed along with Briony. His
Seeing Summer's pleading face, River finally gave in. He peered through the binoculars. Not long after, his attention shifted to the other side."What about the plants in those water tubes?" he pointed without lowering the binoculars from his face."I'm observing the factors that affect leaf respiration. I will measure how much oxygen is collected in the tubes every day," Summer explained smoothly.River's mouth rounded. After observing through the binoculars for a while, he raised his finger again. "The clearest tube collects the most air!""Yeah! That means photosynthesis occurs faster if the plants get a lot of light," Summer nodded with an adorable serious face.River looked further. From end to end, plants and seeds were neatly lined up in various containers."It seems like you won't let me explore that side too," River muttered, somewhat disappointed. A
"Hey? What are you doing?" Briony asked, wincing. She felt uncomfortable because she was so close to Brandon. Summer didn't answer. Panting, she explained, "Look, River! Uncle Brandon and Aunt Briony aren't moving even though we're both pushing them. That's because the forces we're applying to them are equal and opposite in direction. The resultant is zero!" "Summer? Are you using me as an experiment?" Briony asked in disbelief. Meanwhile, Brandon cleared his throat. "Summer, River, you've only been away from your parents for a short time. Please don't act up. Aren't you sweet and smart kids?" "We're doing this precisely because we're smart kids, Uncle," River replied unexpectedly. "Yes! We're proving Newton's Law!" Summer added from a different direction. "Now, let's prove Newton's 3rd Law!" Brandon and Briony blinked. They had no idea what was coming, but they had a bad feeling about it. Plus, they finally understood why they were asked to babysit the kids. They were being mat
"Bye, Mommy, Daddy! Enjoy your travels and stay safe! Have fun with the penguins at the South Pole!" Summer said while waving with all her might. Her smile was bright, her feet occasionally bouncing from the ground.Louis and Sky waved back from the car window."See you later, Honey. Don't forget my message! Be a good girl. Don't cause any trouble while Mommy and Daddy are gone, okay?" Sky said with teary eyes."Relax, Mommy. I'm a good kid. I won't cause any trouble. Just focus on your honeymoon!" Summer nodded while putting her hands on her hips. From Sky's side, Louis pointed at his cousin. "Briony, please watch over Summer well. We trust her to you," he said seriously."I don't think there's anything I need to watch over, Louis. Your daughter is a smart and sweet child. Besides, I'm not the only adult in this house," Briony said lightly."Yes, there's Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt Emily, Uncle Cayden, Uncle Russell, and Uncle Brandon too!" Summer pointed one by one at the people she ment
Louis and Sky exchanged glances. The curves of their lips were full of meaning."The South Pole," they answered then, simultaneously.Everybody stared wide-eyed."The South Pole? Why did you choose a place that far away?" Renata blurted out. She sounded worried."Isn't the trip risky? You have to go through the Drake Passage to get there. That is the most dangerous waterway in the world, even beating the Bermuda Triangle," Remy said, in the same tone.Even River chimed in, "Daddy's right! I've seen it on TV. It is a terrible storm zone. The wind is powerful, and the ocean currents are very strong. The waves can even be as high as 12 meters. That's very dangerous!""Hey, Louis. I know you usually have strange ideas. But, honeymoon in the coldest and most remote place on earth? Seriously? What's so fun about that?" Brandon also criticized the choice of location. However, Louis responded casually. "Guys, don't worry. We are living in a modern era. Several companies have provided shipping
"We can meet after school, River. You can come to my office, or I can come to yours. That can be arranged!" Summer nodded, reassuringly. River bit his lip. His cheeks looked heavy with the burden of disappointment. "But we won't study together in class. We won't do homework together anymore," River's voice was shaking. However, Summer remained relaxed. "Don't worry, River. We can still do homework together. Whenever you get a difficult assignment, just tell me. I'll help you." River lowered his head. He tried to suppress his sadness, but failed. His hands began to rub his eyes. Feeling sorry, his mother rubbed his shoulders. "River, there's no need to be sad. Even though you don't go to the same school, you're still friends. You two can still meet every day to study and play." "Yes, River," Sky continued with the same expression as Renata. "Your mother is right. And actually, that will make your friendship even better. Every morning, you'll have different experiences. You'l
