Ethan's POV

I begged for Annelise's forgiveness all through the night, up until this morning before we both had to go to different places. I dropped her off at a place before I went my way this morning.

She needed to drop off a painting somewhere. She assured me that she would take a cab home as it was going to take a long time before she would start heading back.

We weren't back to normal again, but it’s better than last night. I f*cked up so much last night by letting my emotions get the better of me and by saying to her face that she said what she did because she was mad at me. I knew I had hurt her deeply, and the guilt gnawed at me relentlessly. Every time I thought about it, a wave of regret washed over me. I couldn’t believe I had been so insensitive, especially when she was only trying to protect me.

I was almost at the office when I realized that I needed to pick up a file at the former house. I needed it this same morning, so I turned around and drove towards the house.
