The darkness swooped in, swallowing me whole.
Suddenly, I was in the middle of a park with no recollection of how I had gotten here. The night was darker than usual, not a single streetlight in sight. The air was slightly cooler, the atmosphere void. It was clear that there was no one around for miles to come but still it didn’t feel lonely.
There was an airy familiarity that came with this place. Somehow, I felt safe.
I looked around, trying to see if I’d be able to find a street sign, but all I saw were the outlines of flowers and grass, with trees that seemed to sway silently whenever the wind howled. It was peaceful, but I couldn’t stay. I didn’t belong here.
I started to walk around, moving towards a bench in the middle of two trees. I stopped halfway through. Behind it, a pair of red eyes had begun to form. I was not alone. The thought of someone behind the bushes, watching me all this while sent shivers down my spine.
And worse? It had started to move. It’s crimson form now appearing brighter as it closed the distance between us.
Despite the pitch black, I managed to make out a connecting body. It was a person. They stopped a couple of feet away, then slowly descended to the ground like an animal, its blood red eyes still plastered on me.
I began to panic. If there was ever a time I needed to get away, it was now. But as I backed up, my right foot stepped on a branch, making me pause in fear.
At first, there was utter silence. Red eyes flashed me a cold stare, almost like they were staring into my soul. Then without warning, took off on it’s heel, heading directly at me. My eyes went wide, I turned around and ran as fast as I could.
I didn’t know where I was headed, all I knew was I had to get away.
But I wasn’t fast enough. Something collided into my back and I toppled over, falling face down. I heard a growl inches away from my ears, then a whisper came after.
“Astra!”
An alarm blared. I woke up in shock, struggling to breathe.
Where am I? What happened?
“Astra, calm down.” Lola’s voice cracked through my hysteria.
I took a deep breath, reaching to the side of my bed to grab a cup of water I assumed Jerry had placed there for me.
“Fuck!” I exclaimed once I had settled down. “What the hell was that? I totally lost it over some dream, I really need to get my shit together.”
“Want to talk about it?”
“No, Lola!” I snapped, running my palm over my face.
I couldn’t stop thinking about the dream as I freshened up. I’ve always had dreams, but none of them was as bad as this. None of them frightened me as much as this one did, none of them made me feel this way. At the end, I summed it up to me reacting to being in a new place, surrounded by werewolves I was yet to meet.
I joined Julian and Jerry at the dinner table, taking a seat just as Jerry was placing a plate of steak in front of me.
I frowned. “Steak for breakfast?”
“Brunch actually,” he corrected.
I looked at the time. “Shit, it’s past twelve.”
“Don’t swear, Astra.” Julian said, getting up from the table. He ate his last piece of steak, then put on a leather jacket before finally looking at the both of us. “Eat up, you need to get more meat in you. And Jerry, make sure your sister isn’t late.”
Jerry nodded, and I refocused my attention on the food. Julian left us in a hurry, rushing out of the house like his life depended on it.
“Hurry up, sis. We have to get to the pack house.”
“Pack house?” I asked, now doing the dishes.
He nodded. “Everyone’s eager to meet you.”
“Everyone?” I asked again, suddenly feeling nauseous. I wasn’t technically a shy person, but it felt like I was in a completely different world, surrounded by people who were nothing like me.
When Jerry didn’t respond, I turned to look at him. He was looking at me, except his eyes were empty, like he was looking through me.
“Jer—”
“We need to leave now, Monica says everyone is already there.” He cut me off, pushing me away from the sink and out the door. “No time to clean, Astra. Get in the car.”
As we drove off, I couldn’t help but think about my mum and friends. What would they be doing now? Did they miss me? I took out my phone and texted Ella. Next, I pulled up Shawn’s name. Just as I was about to send him a message, his popped up.
Missing you, babe.
I smiled to myself. Why was I so worried? Of course he was missing me, we were practically soulmates.
“A boy?” Jerry’s voice startled me.
“What?” I asked, caught off guard. He gave me a side eye and I looked at my phone screen again. “Oh this….yeah. My boyfriend.”
Jerry nodded, frowning slightly. It was brief, I could have missed it if I wasn’t paying attention.
“Who’s Monica?” I asked, sitting straight, mostly trying to steer the conversation away from my love life. “Earlier, it seemed like you were staring into space, and then you mentioned Monica saying everyone was waiting. So, who is she?”
Jerry blushed a little. “My girlfriend.” He glanced my way, smiling sheepishly. “She says hi, by the way.”
I nodded, even though I was confused.
“Oh fuck,” he cursed, swerving left onto a narrow road. “You’re looking at me like you think I’m crazy. I’m supposed to be briefing you on the basics. So….all werewolves have abilities, some more distinct than others. I can communicate with every member of the pack, I can also read whatever emotion your wolf is feeling. For example, your wolf is…..eager.”
“He’s right,” Lola chipped in.
“Lucky guess,” I murmured.
“What are you thinking now, sis?”
I gasped, staring at him. “What the hell? I just heard you in my head.”
He gave me a cocky look. “Told you.”
“Wow,” I said excitedly, laughing uncontrollably. “That was freaking insane. Can I do that? How do I do that?”
“Okay settle down, little pup.”
The car finally came to a stop and he killed the engine.
“We’ll figure out what your special trick is,” Jerry assured me, smacking his lips. “Well, we’re here.”
I swallowed, looking around. It felt like I was going to throw up. I could see different kinds of people moving around a tall mansion, all confidently heading to whatever destination they needed to be at. Some were older than I was, some younger, and for the first time since I got here, I realized there was a possibility that I might not fit in here.
At least not the way I did back home.
“You coming?” Jerry asked, already out the car. His hand was resting on the window, his head popping in to assess my face better.
I gulped hard, my voice shaking. “S…sure.”
Immediately I stepped out of the car, the cool breeze hit me. My nose caught different scents. I felt Lola light up in me, her energy stronger. She was excited, while I was shitting my pants. But there was a lot riding on this. I had to take a step, or I might never see Shawn again.
I was super anxious, but ready. What could go wrong?
Jerry took my hand and led me through a garden where people were scattered around, engaged in conversations. But every time I passed an individual, they would sniff and look my way, like they could sense I was different.
Or maybe just new.
Soon, everyone was looking at me as I walked by. Attention was something I was used to, but not this kind. It felt like I was at a recital, waiting to give the performance of a lifetime, and everyone was waiting to see if I would do well or fail miserably.
“I have to go, Astra.” Jerry muttered the last words I wanted to hear. “Stay here, I’ll be back. Monica needs me.”
And before I could protest, he disappeared through a crowd of people, leaving me standing alone to wallow in my own filth and despair.
“Kill me now,” I whispered under my breath, looking around, trying to avoid any direct eye contact.
Instead of standing in the presence of wandering eyes, I figured I’d turn the corner, head into the maze part of the garden and hope nobody got the same idea I did.
This however, was the start of my problems.
As soon as I stepped into the maze entrance, I heard voices. I should have ignored, should have turned back the way I came, but I heard a loud slap and became intrigued.
There were four girls. Three standing, hovering over the one girl on the floor. Two of the three girls were blonde, while the other had brown hair. The one on her knees had bushy curls that looked like it was hardly ever combed, she wore a pair of glasses and was bleeding by the side of her lip.
I saw this and something in me snapped. “What are you guys doing to her?” I said loudly, rushing to help the girl to her feet.
The blonde girl with longer hair blocked my part. I immediately deduced that she must be the leader. Her eyes were hazel, but slowly turning fiery as she stared me down.
“You must be new here,” she cooed, her voice deadly sharp. “I’ll give you a word of advice. Walk. Away!”
I looked back into her eyes, showing no sign of backing down. “Or what? The three of you are going to gang up and beat me? Three against one, don’t you think that’s pretty weak? If you want to be a bully, you should at least have the guts to have a one on one confrontation.”
She scoffed, searching my face as if she was trying to figure out where I had gotten the nerve to speak to her that way. “Just who the fuck do you think you are?”
“Who the fuck are you?” I asked.
“Someone you do not want to cross,” she replied, veins popping out of her forehead.
“Well, too late.” I rolled my eyes, shoving her out of my way. “I suggest you take your lackies and get the hell out of here before I scream and call attention.”
Her confident demeanor faltered for just a split second.
She smiled devilishly. “This isn’t over. You’re fresh meat, and by the time I’m done with you, you’ll be wishing you hadn’t played a hero right at this very moment.”
Her voice was so low, it made my skin crawl.
She turned to the other two girls and signaled for them to follow her. Once they were out of sight, I offered the girl on the ground my arm.
“Thank…thank you,” she stuttered, her head bowed the entire time. “B…but…you shouldn’t h….have done that. You’ve put a target on your back because of me.”
“Don’t worry, I can handle them.” I told her. “Who are they anyway?”
“Ruby, Claire and Laura.”
The answer to my question came from behind. I turned around, coming face to face with the most gorgeous boy I’d ever seen. He was tall, had short black hair that made little bangs by the side. His lips were blood red, full and juicy, and he had a birthmark under his right eye.
His grey eyes were fixated on me, holding a glint of torture and filled with untold secrets. He held an air of mystery. He was only wearing pants, baring out his chest for whoever cared to look.
And look I did. How could I not? They were chiseled and toned, layered with abs. He was also kind of sweaty, like he had just finished a work out, judging by the towel handing around his neck.
“And you are?”
The girl beside me gasped, before deciding she couldn’t take anymore interaction for the day and abandoning me, rushing off like she couldn’t wait to leave our presence.
So much for trying to help.
“I’m Levi Parrish,” he said, circling me. “But I think the better question is, who are you?”
I followed his movements. “I’m Astra….Finnegan.”
The slight hesitation was me considering what last name to go by. At the end, I decided to stick with my mum’s. The only name I had ever been called.
“Finnegan,” he repeated, giving me a peculiar look. “Well, Astra Finnegan, Dorothy was right. You should not have helped her.”
My mother taught me to stand up for what’s right, and no matter how beautiful a creature Levi was, I wasn’t about to let him stand here and make me feel like I had done something wrong.Open your mouth and say something. My brain kept telling me to speak up, but my body was finding it hard to catch up. Levi and I stood there for what felt like hours. We said nothing, only stared into each other’s eyes, mesmerized.I have a boyfriend.I reminded myself, finally tearing my gaze away from his. He cleared his throat and stepped closer, moving toward me slowly.“You’re new,” he said, his eyes still focused on me.I nodded, afraid he could hear my heart pounding in my chest. He walked behind me, his body inches from mine, heat radiating through the little gap between us. Suddenly, I felt his face on my neck, his nostrils sniffing.“You have a unique scent,” he said.I held my breath, stopping myself from swallowing the lump lodged in my throat. What was happening right now? I felt Lola strug
My body felt weightless, my mind drifting in and out of consciousness. Voices swam around me, distant yet urgent.“What’s wrong with her?” an unfamiliar voice from the crowd demanded."She’s burning up," another voice added, except I knew who this one belonged to. It was my father, Julian. "Something's not right."“Just hang in there, Astra.” Levi breathed into my ears, gently rocking me back and forth as he stroked my hair. “You’re going to be okay.”It was working. His presence was making the pain much more tolerable.I barely registered the firm hands pressing against my forehead, the worried murmurs growing around me. The scent of my brother, Jerry, cut through the haze. A smell I didn’t know I had already picked up in my short time here. He knelt beside me, and although I couldn’t see quite clearly, I could feel the strange stench of worry latched onto him.His strong hands reached out to me, his face tight with concentration, but not towards me. He was trying to get to Lola, to
The sun had already begun to set, Julian stood in the middle of the room, his whole attention focused on me, his presence commanding as ever.He was intimidating, but not enough to keep me from protesting.“What do you mean ready for school tomorrow?” I yelled, unable to control myself.“Did you think you were going to stop having an education just because you’re a werewolf?” He asked, standing tall with his arms crossed over his chest.I blinked up at him. "I knew I was going to be learning. But, education?""Yes. Starting tomorrow, you'll be attending Moondew Academy."My stomach dropped. "Wait, what? You're really sending me to school? Like…an actual school? With werewolves?"His lips twitched in mild amusement. "Of course. What do you think the pups around here do? Run around naked in the wild?”I bit my lower lip. “Well….”I paused and we stared at each other, both of them clearly aware of my unspoken words.“We’re not animals, Astra,” Jerry joined the conversation, slightly offe
“Watch where you’re going,” he muttered, his voice low and rough, like gravel sliding over stone.I yanked myself free and took a step back, ignoring the way my skin burned where he’d touched me. “Maybe you should watch where you’re standing,” I shot back, lifting my chin defiantly. His lips curled, almost like he was amused, and for some reason, that irritated me more. “You’re the one who ran into me, half-breed.”My stomach twisted at the insult, but I refused to let it show. I had already decided Levi Parrish wasn’t worth my time, that he was just another arrogant prince who thought the world revolved around him.And yet… my stupid heart didn’t get the memo.He stared at me for a bit too long, as if waiting for a reaction. I gave him none. Instead, I rolled my eyes, stepped around him, and kept walking, forcing myself not to look back.“You know, it’s my duty to watch over you.”I heard a voice say, inches away from my eyes. He was following me, like a fly would its victim. I tried
I knew Moondew academy was going to be so much different from my former school, but I didn’t expect it to be full on bizarre. For the first time since I walked away from Levi, I finally got the chance to check out my classes. At first, I saw normal subjects like history, biology, English, even advanced calculus. Then, it started to get weird. Everyday, I had to attend a training class twice. One before lunch, and the other right before the end of school. The class was divided into many portions; Physical strength, skillset, special ability, endurance level and so on. We also had a special P.E class intended just for track and field. As if that wasn’t enough, I found out the most popular sport was sparring.I reached the textbook room, a small, windowless space lined with shelves packed tightly with books. The librarian barely acknowledged me as I approached the counter. My initial thought was to ask about all the classes I didn’t quite understand, but I hesitated, tired of being the n
The short time it took me to navigate my way from the training grounds to the cafeteria was enough for Ruby and her friends to spread the news of my inability to produce any powers. The moment I stepped into the hallway, I could hear the whispers, the murmurs. People stared, some talked quietly, while others didn’t care about being discreet.“Who cares if she hears us? She’s basically human, we can totally kick her ass.”I heard a group say as I walked past them, I’d never been so humiliated in my entire life. What happened to the bold, fearless girl who practically ruled the halls of Hartville high? What happened to Astra, the born leader? Was I really going to be a nobody?I was already feeling bad enough, everything with Levi and possibly not having any special abilities. Now this. It was all too much for me.“She really doesn’t have an ability?”“What kind of werewolf is that?”“No wonder she was raised with humans.”I clenched my fists and kept walking, pretending not to notice t
Strong arms wrapped around me from behind, pulling me closer, tighter. I closed my eyes and let myself be swept away by the warmth, the soft, tender love I’d missed for the past two days. There was nothing like being in the arms of someone you loved, someone you just couldn’t do without. That was how I felt about...My eyes snapped open. Something was wrong. I remembered leaving Hartville with my father, remembered attending Moondew academy. So how could I be in bed with my boyfriend? My hands shook, my heart pounded, though I tried to act unfazed.Enough to not alert my intruder.Behind me, he groaned, pushing himself even closer to me, sniffing me. He breathed into my neck before slowly lowering himself so he could nibble my shoulders.“Astra….”The hot air on my skin was so sudden that I couldn’t stop myself from reacting. Next, his hands moved, trailing my arms until it stopped at my thigh. For a second, it felt like he was asking for permission to keep going, waiting to see if my
Levi stood at the entrance, his face pale, his jaw tight, and his stormy gray eyes surveying the crowded hallway. A thick silence settled over the students as they shifted uncomfortably under his cold stare. Finally, his gaze locked onto me.I might be mistaken, but as soon as our eyes met, I thought I saw his face relax a little, and a small smile tugged at his lips for less than a second. He smoothened out his hair, stuffed his hands into his pocket and began to walk in like he owned the place, ignoring the stares that followed.I stiffened, my heartbeat faltering for a split second before picking up again. He started walking towards me, his strides purposeful and unreadable. He stopped right in front of me, his towering presence making me feel smaller than usual. And yet, he said nothing.Slowly, the silence in the background began to morph into a symphony of noise. Chatters, footsteps, the bustling of students in a semi ordinary school.I looked up at him, remembering how we had le
As soon as the words left her mouth, dread filled me.I stood there frozen, staring blankly at Cherry. What did she mean he left? Levi would never leave me, not over this. He was probably by a corner, watching, waiting for me to come to my senses. But as I looked around, the beat of the music, the chatter, the swirling lights. All faded into a distant buzz. Like a fly I needed to get rid of. I couldn't move. I just stood there, my mouth slightly parted, trying to process it.I hadn't meant for him to actually go. I’d been angry, but…not that angry.Cherry shifted awkwardly in front of me, clearly unsure what to do next. She almost looked worried. Or was it pity? Before I could decipher her emotions, someone shoved past me roughly, knocking me a step to the side. Expensive perfume filled the air, and I recoiled a little in disgust, unable to help myself."Cherry, what are you doing standing here?" Ruby O'Brian’s nasal voice sliced through the heavy air. "Come play a game with the rest
The music thumped like a living heartbeat, loud enough to drown out any rational thoughts as Levi and I stepped into the brightly lit living room. Colorful lights blinked across the ceiling, casting silhouettes of the Moondew pack's teens grinding and laughing. We were in Damien’s house. It was neat, organized, and stacked with beer and snacks. You could just tell this wasn’t his first rodeo, and with all the parents now living at the pack house, it was easier access without consequences. But I wasn’t thinking about the party—I was thinking about how this time, everything had changed. Or was about to change. Levi was about to be set up, or pushed into an arranged marriage. And worse, it was going to be with someone who didn’t really know him. Someone who had no idea how to calm him when he got in one of his moods. She wasn’t right for him. So who was? Me?Levi’s hand found the small of my back, making me shiver slightly. I peeked up at him as we weaved through the crowd. He looked cal
It was finally Friday. Every hall I passed, every corner, teenagers were whispering about Damien’s party. Almost everyone in Moondew academy was attending, it was the highlight of the weekend.“Thank goddess Damien decided to step up, we haven’t had a proper party since we all started living under the same roof.”I heard a group of girls lamenting a few blocks away from my locker.Apparently, it was unheard of. Students here partied just as much as we did back home, if not more. The rest of the day went on the same, that by the end of my final class, I felt like I’d been present at a million Moondew high school parties.Students hurried out of school grounds, most girls mentioning how they had nothing to wear and how they had to get ready. The halls were in chaos, busier than usual. More hectic and crowded.I was walking to the parking lot to meet up with Levi when Valerie caught up to me, holding a huge textbook in her hand.“Astra…” she was out of breath with beads of sweat forming
I leaned against the passenger side of Levi’s black jeep, the early evening breeze sweeping my bangs across my face. The parking lot was half-empty now, students strolling along the pavement, but my eyes remained fixed on the front doors of Moondew Academy.I bit my lip, replaying our argument on the training field for what had to be the hundredth time. I hated how easily Levi could make me feel ignorant—like I didn’t know what I was doing, like I was still that girl from Hartville fumbling her way into a world I barely understood. But at the same time, I hated how my last words had cut him.I’d seen it in his eyes. My accusation that he was too overprotective. It had stung, especially when all he’s ever done is save me.He wasn’t angry. He was hurt. The doors finally swung open, and my gaze rose. Levi stepped out, moving casually. His hair was wet, but not dripping, and it seemed to have formed a different wave all on its own. He carried himself so well, so effortlessly that everyone
The cool night breeze brushed against my skin as Levi walked me up to my room, but I was more focused on the way our fingers almost touched with every step we took. The party was over, the memory of laughter and music still playing in my mind as vivid as ever.I wasn’t ready to let it go. Not yet."Did you have fun?" he asked, his voice low, almost sleepy.I smiled, nodding. "Yeah…I actually did."His lips twitched like he was trying not to smile too wide. "Good. Then you’ll be happy to know there’s no early morning training tomorrow."Relief flooded me. “Bless you,” I murmured, and he chuckled.“We deserve a break after tonight.”"You’re the best fake boyfriend I’ve ever had," I grinned. He reached out and tugged a loose curl behind my ear. “Sleep tight, half breed.”He walked away backward, still watching me until he turned the corner. I slipped inside and leaned against the door for a second, smiling like an idiot. I couldn’t help it. Tonight had been the most peace I’d felt in a w
It felt like the ground had tilted beneath me. My breath hitched, and my heartbeat banged in my ears. No. No, this couldn’t be happening. It couldn’t really be him.The moment Levi’s eyes landed on Damien, something in him snapped."Get in the car!" he said, gritting his teeth.I blinked at him. "What?""Astra," he growled. "Now!!"There was no room for argument in his tone, so I obeyed, slipping into the passenger seat just as he slammed the driver’s door shut. The engine roared to life, and he took off with a speed that sent my stomach lurching. The tension in the car was thick and the look on his face scared the hell out of me, but I couldn’t just sit there. "Levi, please, talk to me. What are you doing?""We’re going to see my father," he said without looking at me."Levi, no. Please, let’s just...breathe. Maybe it’s not what it looks like.""You saw him, Astra. You know exactly what it looks like.""I don’t want any more trouble. Maybe we should just leave it alone, maybe he won’t
With the help of Levi, I cleaned up and got changed. He gave me his leather jacket—that seemed to swallow me whole—to cover up my stained shirt. We were in the boys locker room alone, the air surprisingly clear. Levi dried my hair and combed it out, cleaning the spot on my shoe where the milk had dripped onto, while I sulked in anger. He wasn’t mad at me, but I could tell he was disappointed.“I told you to ignore her,” he said, dabbing on my skirt to get the milk stain away. “Why don’t you ever listen to me?”I bit my lips, watching him carefully. “I know, I’m sorry. She just knows how to push my buttons.”He sighed. “Maybe our next training should be on how to ignore comments that make no sense.”I looked down at him. “Did it though?”He paused. “What are you asking me?”“What is this mark thing she mentioned?”He sighed again. “I had a feeling someone would bring that up eventually, I just didn’t think it would be this soon.” He stared at me for a long time, but I could tell he was
“Astra, wake up!”Lola’s voice pierced my dreams with a whisper sharp enough to slice through an elephant’s skin."Check on him," she repeated. My eyes blinked open to a haze of pale lamp light. The clock on my nightstand read 5:02 AM. Still dark enough for the pack house to still be bathed in silence, but early enough that even the birds hadn’t dared to sing yet.My body protested as I sat up. Every inch of me ached from yesterday’s trainings, but Lola didn’t speak unless it mattered. Especially not at dawn when I was supposed to be sleeping.I took off my night t-shirt and threw on a tank top, slipped into yoga shorts and sneakers, and tiptoed out of my room. The pack house was cloaked in stillness, long halls bathed in a soft golden glow from the hanging lamps that never turned off. The scent of cedarwood and old leather followed me as I made my way to the end of the hall.To Levi’s room.My hand had barely lifted to knock when the door flew open.Levi stood in the doorway, shirt s
I couldn’t stop hearing the Alpha’s voice.“If you are Levi’s mate, fake or not…it isn’t going to be easy from now on. And if you’re not…then goddess help you when his real mate finds out.”The words spun around my head like a spell I couldn’t break, looping again and again as I sat cross-legged on my bed, staring at the wall like it had answers. It didn’t.Nothing did.I hadn't told Levi. I didn’t plan to. What good would it do? It would just complicate the lie we were both trying so hard to sell, like two people pretending they could walk across a frozen lake without falling through. My fingers twisted in the hem of my skirt. My heart hadn't stopped pounding since the meeting with the Alpha. The gravity of it all weighed heavily on me, like there was about to be a shift in this magical world. If only I could identify it.Once again, I was clueless. Even more that I was now in this mess. Was Ruby right? Was I just ignorant? Should I have thought well and hard before accepting to play
