The short time it took me to navigate my way from the training grounds to the cafeteria was enough for Ruby and her friends to spread the news of my inability to produce any powers. The moment I stepped into the hallway, I could hear the whispers, the murmurs. People stared, some talked quietly, while others didn’t care about being discreet.
“Who cares if she hears us? She’s basically human, we can totally kick her ass.”
I heard a group say as I walked past them, I’d never been so humiliated in my entire life. What happened to the bold, fearless girl who practically ruled the halls of Hartville high? What happened to Astra, the born leader?
Was I really going to be a nobody?
I was already feeling bad enough, everything with Levi and possibly not having any special abilities. Now this. It was all too much for me.
“She really doesn’t have an ability?”
“What kind of werewolf is that?”
“No wonder she was raised with humans.”
I clenched my fists and kept walking, pretending not to notice the way heads turned as I passed. The stares burned into my skin, but I refused to let them see how much it affected me. My wolf, Lola, growled in the back of my mind, a low, frustrated rumble.
“She’s done this on purpose,” Lola muttered. “That girl, Ruby, she wants to humiliate us.”
I didn’t reply, but I knew Lola was right. It hadn’t even been an hour since training ended, and Ruby had already spread the rumor. The rich, entitled werewolf had made it her personal mission to make me feel like an outsider. And it was working.
I couldn’t keep going, the thought of walking into the cafeteria, of facing even more whispers and judgmental stares, made my stomach turn. Instead, I took the corner to my right and headed toward the field, climbing the bleachers to sit alone. I couldn’t eat, I had no appetite. Everything was a mess.
The crisp afternoon breeze did little to soothe my nerves, but at least out here, I could breathe. I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my contacts until I found the name I was looking for: Ella.
It had been two days since I spoke to her—since I left Hartville and entered this world I didn’t belong in. I sent multiple messages, but she hadn’t replied any. I understood that she was pissed about my sudden departure, but I needed her now more than anything.
I pressed the button and brought the phone to my ear. It rang twice before a familiar, bubbly voice answered.
“Astra? Oh my god, I was just thinking about you!”
A lump formed in my throat at the warmth in my friend’s voice. I had missed this—missed having someone who didn’t look at me like I was a freak.
“Hey, El,” I said, forcing a small smile. “I needed to hear a friendly voice.”
“What’s wrong?” Ella asked immediately, her excitement shifting into concern. “You sound…off.”
I sighed, leaning back against the metal bleacher. “It’s just…everything’s different here. People aren’t exactly welcoming.”
Ella groaned. “Let me guess. Mean cousins?”
“Something like that.” I hesitated, knowing I couldn’t explain the whole truth. “They don’t like me, and now everyone’s talking.”
“That’s ridiculous. You’re Astra freaking Finnegan. You’re the most badass person I know.”
A bitter laugh escaped my lips. “Not here, I’m not. I’m the girl who’s different. The one who shouldn’t even be…in their gathering.”
There was silence on the other end before Ella finally spoke. “Who cares what they think? You’ve never needed anyone’s approval before.”
I sighed, wishing it were that simple. But here, in Moondew, things weren’t like they were in Hartville. I wasn’t just another girl. I was a weakling in a world that demanded strength.
“I just…I don’t know if I belong here.” My voice was barely above a whisper.
“You do,” Ella said firmly. “You belong wherever you choose to be. And if your dad’s family can’t see how amazing you are, then screw them.”
Right. My dad’s family. I hated lying to her, but I couldn’t exactly tell her I was a werewolf, living amongst pack members.
I closed my eyes, letting Ella’s words wash over me. Maybe she was right. Maybe I needed to stop caring about what the pack thought and start proving them wrong.
“Thanks, El,” I murmured. “I really needed this.”
“That’s what best friends are for,” Ella said brightly. “Now, tell me more about your family. Any cute brother or cousin I should know about?”
I shook my head, a small smile tugging at my lips for the first time today. All felt right with the world once more, and I started to even believe that maybe things weren’t completely hopeless after all.
The rest of the day passed in a blur, keeping my head down and avoiding unnecessary interactions. I was drained, emotionally and mentally, by the time the final bell rang.
As I stepped outside, I spotted a familiar car pulling up. Jerry.
My older half-brother leaned against the side of the sleek black vehicle, arms crossed, watching me with his usual easygoing smirk. “Tough day?”
I sighed, slipping into the passenger seat as he slid behind the wheel. “You have no idea.”
“Anything I can help with?”
“Can you drive me back to Hartville?” I said, he furrowed his brows. “Then you can’t help me.” I sighed, burying myself into the car seat.
“Look, I’m sorry they’re giving you a tough time, but I’m here if you want to talk.”
Jerry was trying and I loved him for it, but I didn’t think anyone would understand what I was going through right now. I was stuck between being a wolf and a human, I couldn’t talk to anyone about it. No one would relate.
But at least there was someone I could talk to him about.
“What’s up with that Ruby girl?” I found myself saying with so much spite in my voice.
Jerry glanced at me. “Who? Ruby Obrian?”
I nodded, anger boiling inside me as I remembered everything that happened today. “Yeah, she acts like she owns the school.”
A thought came to my head. What if she actually did? Everything would make so much sense.
I looked at Jerry. “That’s it, isn’t it? Her family owns the school?”
“Well…” Jerry began, “No, but her family is important. They’re part of the council.”
“The council?”
He grinned, knowing I didn’t understand what that meant. “The council that was formed after the great war.”
My sat up straight, shaking my head, not wanting to hear anymore. It was worse than I had thought.
“How’s that possible? They must be about a thousand years old,” I whispered under my breath.
“We’re werewolves, most of us live longer than humans if we stay out of danger. Plus, the council is handed down to generations.” He explained, even though my question wasn’t really directed at him. “Her family is rich, most of it is old money, but rich regardless.”
I heaved another sigh, resuming my position on the seat, now more depressed than ever. “She’s a pain in my ass.”
Jerry chuckled. "You and everyone else’s. I know what’ll cheer you up though, there’s a surprise waiting for you back home."
My face lit up.
I raised a brow. “Good surprise or bad surprise?”
He smirked. “I said it would cheer you up, didn’t I?”
I smiled, curiosity sparking in my chest as we drove home. When we finally pulled up to the house, my eyes widened in shock.
Sitting in the driveway was a brand-new car. Sleek, black, and shining in the afternoon sun.
My jaw dropped. “No way.”
Jerry grinned. “It’s all yours, dad picked it out himself.”
I couldn’t contain my joy. Julian was trying, he was doing everything to make me feel at home. And as much as it would take more than a car to do that, it was definitely a step in the right direction.
Maybe being here wasn’t so bad after all.
Strong arms wrapped around me from behind, pulling me closer, tighter. I closed my eyes and let myself be swept away by the warmth, the soft, tender love I’d missed for the past two days. There was nothing like being in the arms of someone you loved, someone you just couldn’t do without. That was how I felt about...My eyes snapped open. Something was wrong. I remembered leaving Hartville with my father, remembered attending Moondew academy. So how could I be in bed with my boyfriend? My hands shook, my heart pounded, though I tried to act unfazed.Enough to not alert my intruder.Behind me, he groaned, pushing himself even closer to me, sniffing me. He breathed into my neck before slowly lowering himself so he could nibble my shoulders.“Astra….”The hot air on my skin was so sudden that I couldn’t stop myself from reacting. Next, his hands moved, trailing my arms until it stopped at my thigh. For a second, it felt like he was asking for permission to keep going, waiting to see if my
My fingers reached out, gripping the hem of the sheets. My manicured fingers dug into the satin, squeezing the fabric until I could feel my palm go numb. My boyfriend, Shawn, had his head buried between my thighs. His tongue flicked the tip of my clit, and my lips parted with ecstasy. I kept my eyes closed, feeling every touch, every motion. “Keep going,” I whispered, moving my hand so I could place it on his head.He went deeper, going faster, making me gasp loudly. This was always the moment he’d caution me to keep it down, reminding me to stay quiet because my mum was in the room right next to mine. But tonight, he said nothing, he let me moan out my desires. His hands started to move away from my legs, past my belly button to my breast. I used my free hand to follow his, intertwining our fingers to keep us connected. But then I felt something strange, something unusual. His hands were hairier, harder. His fingers were longer, sharper.I pushed my eyes open in alarm, trying to re
What do you do when you start hearing voices in your head? You shut up and tell no one.“So, you’re just going to ignore me and act like I’m not here?” Lola asked while I sat quietly at the table, having breakfast with my mum.It had only been a few hours since I first heard her in my head, but it felt like a lifetime. She was getting way too loud, and it was making me agitated.“I’m not the one making you angry, our kind is just naturally aggressive.” She said again, this time in a mocking tone.I gripped the handle of my fork and gritted my teeth, trying to pay attention to what my mother was saying. She was talking, but I could barely hear her. She was saying something about my birthday, probably planning something fun we could both do together, like always. She was my favorite person in the whole world and the one person I could always count on. I knew whatever she had in store for today was going to be amazing, but I just couldn’t bring myself to be excited.“Honey, are you okay?
I must still be stuck in last night’s dream.“What do you mean my father?” I asked loudly, my voice sharp. “Take me away to where? You’re not making any sense, mum.”“Astra.”The man spoke, moving towards me. I flinched, taking a step back. I looked from him to my mother, then back to him. He had black hair and blue eyes, similar to mine. His intense eyes on me made my insides turn. What exactly was going on? Who is this man and why was he in my house, calling my name as if we knew each other?“Astra….honey….please.” My mother forced out, staggering to my side. She took my hand and looked me in the eye. “I need to tell you something.”She went ahead and explained the situation. The darkness swooped in, swallowing me whole. Suddenly, I was in the middle of a park with no recollection of how I had gotten here. The night was darker than usual, not a single streetlight in sight. The air was slightly cooler, the atmosphere void. It was clear that there was no one around for miles to come but still it didn’t feel lonely. There was an airy familiarity that came with this place. Somehow, I felt safe. I looked around, trying to see if I’d be able to find a street sign, but all I saw were the outlines of flowers and grass, with trees that seemed to sway silently whenever the wind howled. It was peaceful, but I couldn’t stay. I didn’t belong here.I started to walk around, moving towards a bench in the middle of two trees. I stopped halfway through. Behind it, a pair of red eyes had begun to form. I was not alone. The thought of someone behind the bushes, watching me all this while sent shivers down my spine. And worse? It had started to move. It’s crimson form now
My mother taught me to stand up for what’s right, and no matter how beautiful a creature Levi was, I wasn’t about to let him stand here and make me feel like I had done something wrong.Open your mouth and say something. My brain kept telling me to speak up, but my body was finding it hard to catch up. Levi and I stood there for what felt like hours. We said nothing, only stared into each other’s eyes, mesmerized.I have a boyfriend.I reminded myself, finally tearing my gaze away from his. He cleared his throat and stepped closer, moving toward me slowly.“You’re new,” he said, his eyes still focused on me.I nodded, afraid he could hear my heart pounding in my chest. He walked behind me, his body inches from mine, heat radiating through the little gap between us. My body felt weightless, my mind drifting in and out of consciousness. Voices swam around me, distant yet urgent.“What’s wrong with her?” an unfamiliar voice from the crowd demanded."She’s burning up," another voice added, except I knew who this one belonged to. It was my father, Julian. "Something's not right."“Just hang in there, Astra.” Levi breathed into my ears, gently rocking me back and forth as he stroked my hair. “You’re going to be okay.”It was working. His presence was making the pain much more tolerable.I barely registered the firm hands pressing against my forehead, the worried murmurs growing around me. The scent of my brother, Jerry, cut through the haze. A smell I didn’t know I had already picked up in my short time here. The sun had already begun to set, Julian stood in the middle of the room, his whole attention focused on me, his presence commanding as ever.He was intimidating, but not enough to keep me from protesting.“What do you mean ready for school tomorrow?” I yelled, unable to control myself.“Did you think you were going to stop having an education just because you’re a werewolf?” He asked, standing tall with his arms crossed over his chest.I blinked up at him. "I knew I was going to be learning. But, education?""Yes. Starting tomorrow, you'll be attending Moondew Academy."My stomach dropped. "Wait, what? You're really sending me to school? Like…an actual school? With werewolves?"His lips twitched in mild amusement. "Of course. What do you think the pups around here do? Run around naked in the wild?”I bit my lower lip. “Well….”I paused and we stared at each other, both of them clearly aware of my unspoken words.“We’re not animals, Astra,” Jerry joined the conversation, slightly offe

I knew Moondew academy was going to be so much different from my former school, but I didn’t expect it to be full on bizarre. For the first time since I walked away from Levi, I finally got the chance to check out my classes. At first, I saw normal subjects like history, biology, English, even advanced calculus. Then, it started to get weird. Everyday, I had to attend a training class twice. One before lunch, and the other right before the end of school. The class was divided into many portions; Physical strength, skillset, special ability, endurance level and so on. We also had a special P.E class intended just for track and field. As if that wasn’t enough, I found out the most popular sport was sparring.I reached the textbook room, a small, windowless space lined with shelves packed tightly with books. The librarian barely acknowledged me as I approached the counter. My initial thought was to ask about all the classes I didn’t quite understand, but I hesitated, tired of being the n
“Watch where you’re going,” he muttered, his voice low and rough, like gravel sliding over stone.I yanked myself free and took a step back, ignoring the way my skin burned where he’d touched me. “Maybe you should watch where you’re standing,” I shot back, lifting my chin defiantly. His lips curled, almost like he was amused, and for some reason, that irritated me more. “You’re the one who ran into me, half-breed.”My stomach twisted at the insult, but I refused to let it show. I had already decided Levi Parrish wasn’t worth my time, that he was just another arrogant prince who thought the world revolved around him.And yet… my stupid heart didn’t get the memo.He stared at me for a bit too long, as if waiting for a reaction. I gave him none. Instead, I rolled my eyes, stepped around him, and kept walking, forcing myself not to look back.“You know, it’s my duty to watch over you.”I heard a voice say, inches away from my eyes.
