#CHAPTER 1 Return to the Wedding

last update Terakhir Diperbarui: 2025-04-09 16:01:09

“You’ll come to me tonight?” A sickly sweet feminine voice crooned.

“As soon as I can,” a second voice answered—my fiancé’s voice, “I’ll drug her if I have to. No one but you is getting this cock tonight.”

The room swam into focus, and I realized I was back at this exact moment from a year ago. Two hours before my wedding.

“Lucas,” the woman moaned.

I pulled back from the door like it had scalded me, yanking the veil from my hair.

He couldn’t.

He wouldn’t.

Lucas was my fated mate. I was destined to carry his cubs.

We were meant to rule together, side by side, as the Lycan King and Queen. I looked down at the veil clenched in my fingers, my vision blurred by tears. I threw the fabric to the ground.

A heavy, unexplainable fury began to rise in my gut.

How could this have happened? I should have been dead. But somehow… I was back. Back to one year ago.

I replayed the scenes of our marriage like a fool willingly drinking poison, even as it went sour on her tongue. Lucas, my fated mate and the heir to the Lycan King, had said his vows and pushed the ring on my finger with enough force to make me stumble backwards.

Quickly, Lucas stopped coming to our chambers, and his study door was always locked. I tirelessly worked to prove myself to him despite this coldness, that I could fulfill the roles of dutiful wife and consort to the future Lycan King.

I still believed he could learn to love me, even if I wasn’t his childhood sweetheart, beta Harper.

It wasn’t until later I discovered he had already ruled me out.

Harper crowded our marriage from the very start, like a stone in my shoe I could never kick away. She was there in the mornings, and she was there deep into the night, filling the castle with lewd sounds through the walls and keeping me awake.

I accepted everything, these evenings of infidelity, Ruby’s constant taunting of their relationship, the gifts and jewelry he gave her even when my own dresses began to come apart.

When I finally became pregnant, I truly believed he would return to me. He had to love me as the mother of his child, what more could I do to show him I was just as worthy of his affection as beta Harper?

Then, that fateful night, when Harper appeared in my doorway with a bottle of pills hidden in her coat, I at first thought she was there to apologize.

“May I come in?” She asked sweetly.

I tensed, uneasy. “If you must.”

”I only want to talk,” she said, “it’s been so long since we chatted as friends.”

She perched beside me on the bed, pressing her hand into my growing stomach. I tried to push her away but she pressed into my skin painfully. “Lucas’s child is getting big, isn’t it?”

Our child, I think you mean. I am the mother after all.”

Harper grimaced at my words, and lifted her hand away from me. “I’ve always wondered what it would be like to give birth. To increase the size of the pack. I’ve always hoped my cubs would have Lucas’s eyes.”

I startled back at her words, “What are you saying?”

She glared at me, grabbing me by the back of the throat and slamming me into the mattress. “Who do you think you are to get to carry his children? His mate? The one he can never love?” She cackled, pulling out the black pill bottle from her inner pocket. “You will die tonight, Ruby, and your baby will die with you.”

I thrashed against her, but her grip was too strong. She forced the entire bottle of pills down my throat and immediately my body began to shake. The blood came instantly, and the pain made me howl.

She ripped me off the sheets and onto the floor, pressing into my chest with her knees.

“You stupid bitch,” she hissed into my ear, dangerously quiet. Her fingers tightened around my hair, wrenching me up to look into her face. She grinned. “Lucas has used you from the beginning.

”What, did you think he wouldn’t take advantage of your parents’ connections to finally overthrow his brother Caleb? That he wouldn’t throw you away as soon as you were no longer useful?

“He loves me. He always has and he always will.”

A tall, shadowy figure appeared in the doorway. I recognized him instantly, and my heart desperately wanted to call out to him. “Well?” He rumbled, with the same voice that had sworn to love and protect me.

Harper snickered, dropping my head to the ground with a hideous sound. “We’re free,” she said, stepping on my wrists to meet Lucas.

He bent down to meet my eyes, tilting my chin to him as if he meant to kiss me, like I had dreamed of a thousand times since we first met. “I’ve wanted you dead since the day we married. Seeing you now, drenched in blood, this is the most beautiful you have ever been to me.”

I gurgled out a pathetic plea, desperate for his forgiveness, for his touch, for him to remember the binding agreement he made to me at the altar. Nothing but blood emerged from between my lips.

A horrific crash sounded from the staircase, followed by a series of screams.

“We need to go, the soldiers will be here any minute.” Lucas, the man I had thought was the love of my life, didn’t even spare me a second glance as I bled out on the floor.

They left me there, dying, as the chaos of invasion roared outside.

No one made it out alive, not even Harper and Lucas as the castle burned down, I heard as much from the shouting maids cowering in terror before the attackers. The flames swallowed the room and filled my lungs with ash.

I was too weak to breathe, the pills had drained the life out of me, and the blood loss was too much. I remember the light fading and being held in strong arms, Caleb’s face just above mine. Tears slipped from his nose to my cheeks, and the last thing I could recall was the sound of his voice, choking out my name.

Then suddenly I slipped out of his grip and the world tumbled away from me, like I had fallen into a cold, black abyss.

I slammed into the ground with a gasp, and my vision spun as the shapes around me fell into place.

And here I was again.

I had died. But that hadn’t been the end.

How had I returned? Reborn to this exact moment? Something or someone brought me back from the dead, a year into my past, but for what reason?

I shoved open the doors, revealing the two of them in a tight embrace, Harper’s lips swollen and red. She smirked at me without shame. “Oh, the future queen.” She sighed, looking me up and down as if considering whether or not to eat me. “You look nice.”

Lucas pushed his hair back with his hand casually, as if I had only caught them talking.

“Ruby,” He said pleasantly, striding over to meet me. He wrapped a muscular arm around my waist, pulling me into him as if he meant to kiss me. I would have swooned in my past life, just being near him was enough to make me melt. “Are you ready to get married?”

I felt bile rising in my throat at the thought. Sharing a bed with this man, carrying his cubs, agreeing to his whims and suffering through the cruelty of our loveless marriage.

“Don’t touch me,” I said, my voice echoing in the hall like shattered glass. Lucas tensed, and I pushed his arm away, like he did mine in the wedding of my past life.

“Ruby, what’s wrong?” I glared into his face, the features I had come to know so well. “This isn’t like you.”

No, I wasn’t the same timid girl whose love he had taken for granted. I had a second chance, and I had no intention of wasting it.

“I’m calling off the wedding.”

“You’re calling off the wedding, darling?” He chuckled and reached out to caress my cheek, but I swatted the gesture away.“You heard me.”“I heard you, I just don’t believe you. Is there a problem? Are the flowers not to your taste? I could have someone adjust the arrangements before the ceremony—“”Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about, I saw you two just now. I heard you—“ the sight of red, smudgy bruises on Harper’s neck suddenly caught my attention. “And this!” I exclaimed, pointing at the hickeys covering Harper’s collarbone. “You think you can embarrass me like this on the morning of our wedding, and I’ll still agree to marry you? You bastard—“”Darling,” Lucas said darkly, pressing his fingers a bit too deeply into my shoulder. “Don’t try to make me angry. You’re engaged to the future Lycan King. Backing out of this agreement is not an option.” He pushed a loose lock of hair behind my ear, as if he could soften the tension with gentleness. “Besides, we’re fated

I drew my fingers around his neck, feeling day-old stubble lacing his jaw. With a twist of my wrist, I pulled away the tie at his throat, which was already crooked and smudged with pink lipstick. From the Blondy Girls in his room earlier, I was sure.He watched me intently as I undid the buttons of his white dress shirt, first the one at the top, then the next, and the next, revealing warm, deeply tanned skin underneath. I swallowed as I got lower, more nervous than I expected to be as I got to the last one, and tugged it through the loop.Caleb smirked, running the tips of his fingers under my chin to lift up my gaze from his chest. “Poor, pretty thing. Is Lucas not satisfying you?”The question pulled me instantly away from the moment at hand. I thought of Lucas in the hallway outside my chambers on the day of our wedding, of him taking Harper in the next room while I was pregnant with his child in a past life. “Don’t talk to me about him,” I hissed back, yanking at the edges of hi

RUBYLucas pulled me through the castle, down staircases and through echoing corridors, finally back into my chambers. It would have been a beautiful night for a wedding, if I had still been the naive girl Lucas married in another life.“You’re angry with me, and I don’t understand why.” He began as he finally released my wrist, red from the tightness of his grip. There are too many reasons to list to you, you lying, adulterous bastard!”I caught you with Harper earlier. I know you haven’t been faithful to me, you can’t expect me to ignore that and still walk down the aisle to you.”“What you saw was a misunderstanding—”“What I saw was a betrayal!””Ruby,” he implored, adopting the gentle tone of a hurt lover, “we’re fated mates.”“You certainly don’t act like it.” I interrupted.“I do.” He took my hands in his. “I always have, and I always will. RUBYI stood before the doors to the great hall, where the wedding guests were seated and waiting for the ceremony to commence. There was nothing I could do now, except go through with the wedding. My secret weapon, the recording of Harper’s confession, hid heavily in my bouquet.I rehearsed my moves in my head. Before we were asked to recite our vows, I would play the audio in front of both of our families and Lucas’s political backing. Harper’s words would surely convince the guests in the pews, I would finally be safe from Lucas and his plots against my parents.I looked down at my dress, the one my mother and I had chosen together. I had managed to get rid of the hideous one Harper had tried to force on me earlier. Now, I looked like I always had in my dreams, like a woman who was going to marry the love of her life. I cringed to remember how blindly in love I had been. The massive oak doors creaked open, revealing Lucas with his arm outstretched to walk me down the aisle.“Are y

Lucas looked just as shocked as I felt.“What?” Harper squealed.“You heard what I said, I don’t think there is anything to be confused about. Sir, go ahead,” Caleb says to the officiant, keeping an arm tightly wound around me. “Are you… are you having an affair with Lucas’s brother? You whore!” Harper shouted, lunging for me. I had no time to step out of the way, Caleb picked me up and swirled me around him, keeping me safe from the attack.Harper fell face-first on the marble floor, her nose leaking blood.“I’m the whore? Lucas has been sleeping with you for our entire engagement,” I shouted, more to the audience in the pews than to Harper. It was time they all knew the truth. “He had no intention of honoring this marriage from the very start!”A collective gasp rang around the room, and Lucas finally shook himself out of his stupor to react. “Ruby, there is no need for hysterics–” he started, reaching for me, but Caleb pulled me farther back protectively.“This woman before you ha

He might have thought he had me in his grasp this morning, but there was nothing he could do from underneath my feet.“You’ll regret opposing me.” He hissed as Harper propped him up on her shoulder. “You can’t turn around and marry Caleb, I won’t allow it!”Caleb released a deep cackle, “You think I want to get married with these tacky decorations? No, we’re going to be rescheduling and definitely redoing this entire ceremony. I’m thinking white roses and carnations instead of these awful yellow ones, don’t you think so, Ruby?”I smiled, “And maybe even adding them into the archway over the altar,” I said, gesturing to the empty canopy above us. Lucas glares at me. “What is that supposed to mean?”I groan in frustration, and pull his engagement ring from my pocket. “This will never sit on my finger Lucas. I would rather die than be bound to you for the rest of my life.” It fell from my fingers, clinking pitifully on the marble steps.“But you’re my mate! We have a bond, you belong to me, you are tied to me–”“Yes! Lucas!” I shout, the hurt and anger I have felt since my rebirth bubbling over into my words. “I am supposed to be your mate, and you are supposed to be tied to me, too! But I refuse to be treated like a pawn instead of your partner.”I know what I have to do. I call on my wolf, but my connection to her is still dark. Even without Willow, I muster every ounce of my energy to call the mate bond into my mind, attacking it with the full force of my consciousness. It trembles, and splinters, still present, but weaker. It hurts us both, and Lucas stumbles back, his shocked expression etched into his face. “What the hell

His words shocked me, and I stared at him in surprise. A true marriage? With Caleb? I imagined all the times I had seen other women hanging off of him like ornaments, and all of his snide comments even now that we were allied together against Lucas. It made me want to laugh, but it also sobered me to the reality of our situation. Even if we were striking up something like a friendship, it didn’t change the fact that in the next few months, his fated mate was bound to appear. Regardless of the success of our union against Lucas, he would be separated from me sooner or later.I couldn’t agree to a marriage without any boundaries, like he was suggesting. It wouldn’t be fair to either of us.“I can’t,” I said, turning away from him. “I know you think you’re trying to be kind, but that’s not going to help us.”Caleb sighed, his face expressionless. “You know, as childish as you are, you never really deserved the shit Lucas put you through. We haven’t gotten into any specifics of this arrangement, but before we proceed with the marriage, I think we have to.”“By all means,” Caleb said, gesturing for me to continue. “What do you want?””As a part of our contracted marriage, we should both be free to pursue our own love lives, since this is a political arrangement. As such, I won’t interfere with your lovers and you won’t interfere with mine.”“If that’s what you want,” Caleb said graciously.“It is, it’s what is best for both of us,” I said firmly. “But, if we can abide by those rules, I’ll move in with you. Lucas held his hands up to his temple, where a streak of blood was beginning to trickle down his cheeks.“I’ve always liked you, Lucas, but take one more step and I won’t hesitate to strike you again.”Lucas lowered his arms, a smile breaking across his face. “This is all a misunderstanding.
