I drew my fingers around his neck, feeling day-old stubble lacing his jaw. With a twist of my wrist, I pulled away the tie at his throat, which was already crooked and smudged with pink lipstick. From the Blondy Girls in his room earlier, I was sure.
He watched me intently as I undid the buttons of his white dress shirt, first the one at the top, then the next, and the next, revealing warm, deeply tanned skin underneath. I swallowed as I got lower, more nervous than I expected to be as I got to the last one, and tugged it through the loop.
Caleb smirked, running the tips of his fingers under my chin to lift up my gaze from his chest. “Poor, pretty thing. Is Lucas not satisfying you?”
The question pulled me instantly away from the moment at hand. I thought of Lucas in the hallway outside my chambers on the day of our wedding, of him taking Harper in the next room while I was pregnant with his child in a past life.
“Don’t talk to me about him,” I hissed back, yanking at the edges of his shirt, but he grabbed my hands to stop me.
“Ruby, what happened?” He asked, surprisingly gently. His hands were rough and calloused, but they burned heat into my palms like he might set me on fire.
“Marry me,” I tried again, weakly.
“That’s not an answer.”
”A deal, then.” I said, almost tripping over my words. “Go into a contract with me, be my husband for just one year, and I’ll tell you.”
His face was unreadable. I opened my mouth to speak, but he pushed me off his lap and back onto the red covers.
“Ruby, the whole thing was a joke, I have no shortage of whores to keep me busy.” He began rebuttoning his shirt, and tucking the tails back into his slacks. An infuriatingly flirtatious smile crept over his lips, “I can’t say I’m not flattered by your sincerity, though. I’ll keep it in mind next time Lucas loses a bet.”
“You’re disgusting,” I said, my skin boiling. All of that humiliation, forcing myself onto his bed, for nothing? It’s just as well, there is nothing in the world that could truly be worth the price of sleeping with that man, especially not his good-for-nothing help.
“Besides, I don’t know where you heard this, but I have no interest in the Lycan King’s crown.” I looked up to see Caleb’s attention directed decidedly at adjusting his cuffs. “I’m about as interested in politics as a dog, I prefer other sorts of treats.” He winked.
The declaration made me pause. He was lying. I knew for a fact he was lying because I had been a first-hand witness to the evidence. In my past life, he had himself been leading the revolt against his brother, and eventually even succeeded.
I could hear the screams of the maids, and smell the thick black smoke as the castle went up in flames. These memories were all his doing, and yet here he was claiming he didn’t care whether or not Lucas ascended to the throne?
Now, why are you acting out the role of a disinterested playboy whose only concern is when he can get his next lay? What is your scheme, Caleb?
I considered briefly explaining everything to him, since I knew he must be intending to turn against Lucas. What if I admitted to my rebirth, that I had undeniably useful information which would guarantee to make his revolution successful?
No, I would have nothing but trouble if I showed all my cards now. I had to wait until the right moment to reveal everything I knew. If I shared this too soon, he might completely reject me or suspect some sort of foul-play.
“Now, as for your favor—“
An overpoweringly familiar scent curdled in my nose just as the door swung open. Caleb and I startled, jumping apart as Lucas strode in between us.
He wore a faltering smile, bearing down on me with ice-cold blue eyes. “You’ve had us worried sick Ruby. Your mother couldn’t find you in your chambers and nearly went into hysterics that you might have been kidnapped.” He flashed to his brother, grimacing like he had stepped in shit. “But I see instead you’ve gone to see Caleb. Charming.”
“Nice to see you too, brother.”
Lucas ignored the greeting, “Ruby come here.”
”No,” I said, stepping back from him so Caleb was slightly between us.
“No?”
“You heard me. You can go back and tell my mother I’m fine, I have other things to do than just sit around and wait to get married.”
“Oh my darling, I think you can wait just another hour.”
Caleb burst out laughing at the exchange. “What a doting fiance, leaving your bride alone so long she has to find someone else to entertain her.”
Lucas forced a chuckle along with his brother, taking two long steps to reach me and put a possessive arm around my waist. “The wedding would have been on time, if someone hadn’t felt the need to go for a walk just before it was set to begin.” He retorted.
I tried to wriggle out of his hold, but he tightened his grip, using his free hand to replace a fallen strap onto my shoulder. His fingertips dug into my skin painfully, but he grabbed my hand before I could strike him across the face.
“I don’t know what is going on with you today, Ruby. But you will play the part of the happy wife or you and your wolf will suffer more deeply than you could imagine.”
I tried to retort back, but he pressed his lips to mine in a crashing, uncomfortable kiss, nearly drawing blood with the tips of his teeth. I pulled away, shocked, and wiped the remains of his touch from my mouth.
Lucas laughed again, this time more at ease like he had won. “So that’s all it is, just a disagreement about her dress.” He tipped up my chin to look at him more closely. “If that’s all that had worried you, there was no need to whisper it to me like that. We’ll have someone come to sew on the missing beads, don’t you worry my darling.”
“Of course,” I grit out.
He snatched my hand like it was a leash, and nearly dragged me out of the room. There was nothing I could say in front of him to keep Caleb on my side, not that I had made much progress to begin with, despite the embarrassing stunt I spent the afternoon trying to pull.
I glanced behind me to see Caleb watching as we left, his eyes glowing darkly. He looked dangerous, and irritated, and I was suddenly uneasy with how close I had gotten to him.
He thought I was playing some game to get Lucas’s attention, all thanks to the stupid lie Lucas had told to cover up my actions. All the work I had put in vanished in the blink of an eye, and now the only person I could think of who would be willing to help me was angry with me.
RUBYLucas pulled me through the castle, down staircases and through echoing corridors, finally back into my chambers. It would have been a beautiful night for a wedding, if I had still been the naive girl Lucas married in another life.“You’re angry with me, and I don’t understand why.” He began as he finally released my wrist, red from the tightness of his grip. There are too many reasons to list to you, you lying, adulterous bastard!”I caught you with Harper earlier. I know you haven’t been faithful to me, you can’t expect me to ignore that and still walk down the aisle to you.”“What you saw was a misunderstanding—”“What I saw was a betrayal!””Ruby,” he implored, adopting the gentle tone of a hurt lover, “we’re fated mates.”“You certainly don’t act like it.” I interrupted.“I do.” He took my hands in his. “I always have, and I always will. I have to love you, I can’t help it. I’ve always sworn to you I would do everything I could to make you happy.” His words were fervent, al
RUBYI stood before the doors to the great hall, where the wedding guests were seated and waiting for the ceremony to commence. There was nothing I could do now, except go through with the wedding. My secret weapon, the recording of Harper’s confession, hid heavily in my bouquet.I rehearsed my moves in my head. Before we were asked to recite our vows, I would play the audio in front of both of our families and Lucas’s political backing. Harper’s words would surely convince the guests in the pews, I would finally be safe from Lucas and his plots against my parents.I looked down at my dress, the one my mother and I had chosen together. I had managed to get rid of the hideous one Harper had tried to force on me earlier. Now, I looked like I always had in my dreams, like a woman who was going to marry the love of her life. I cringed to remember how blindly in love I had been. The massive oak doors creaked open, revealing Lucas with his arm outstretched to walk me down the aisle.“Are y
Lucas looked just as shocked as I felt.“What?” Harper squealed.“You heard what I said, I don’t think there is anything to be confused about. Sir, go ahead,” Caleb says to the officiant, keeping an arm tightly wound around me. “Are you… are you having an affair with Lucas’s brother? You whore!” Harper shouted, lunging for me. I had no time to step out of the way, Caleb picked me up and swirled me around him, keeping me safe from the attack.Harper fell face-first on the marble floor, her nose leaking blood.“I’m the whore? Lucas has been sleeping with you for our entire engagement,” I shouted, more to the audience in the pews than to Harper. It was time they all knew the truth. “He had no intention of honoring this marriage from the very start!”A collective gasp rang around the room, and Lucas finally shook himself out of his stupor to react. “Ruby, there is no need for hysterics–” he started, reaching for me, but Caleb pulled me farther back protectively.“This woman before you ha
I couldn’t help but smile, watching Lucas struggle to get back on his feet after his fall. For the first time since my rebirth, it felt like I was finally catching up to him. He might have thought he had me in his grasp this morning, but there was nothing he could do from underneath my feet.“You’ll regret opposing me.” He hissed as Harper propped him up on her shoulder. “You can’t turn around and marry Caleb, I won’t allow it!”Caleb released a deep cackle, “You think I want to get married with these tacky decorations? No, we’re going to be rescheduling and definitely redoing this entire ceremony. I’m thinking white roses and carnations instead of these awful yellow ones, don’t you think so, Ruby?”I smiled, “And maybe even adding them into the archway over the altar,” I said, gesturing to the empty canopy above us. Harper huffed, coughing slightly under the weight of Lucas. “You can keep him,” I said, “my new fiance and I have some business to attend to. Now, if you’ll excuse us.”I
CALEBWhat? Her words rooted me to the spot, and for once in my life, I couldn’t think of a quip to return back to the woman standing in front of me.Somehow, she knew. I have spent years planning to keep my wretched brother away from the throne, and I have spent months putting those plans meticulously into place. I have been quiet, I’ve kept my circles small, how could she possibly have found out what I was doing?Or maybe she doesn’t know? I wondered briefly if it was a fluke as she gazed up at me with those sure, steadfast eyes. This might all be random chance, could she just be a frustrated, jilted bride whose fiance had been fucking another woman behind her back? No, I realized for certain, she knew. She had too many specifics of my intentions, and came right out with them to my face. I had always thought of her as the lovesick puppy who followed my brother around like he was a god and capable of no wrong. But with this unexpected show, it seemed she was not the helpless pawn I’d
“You have no idea what you’re talking about!” She exclaimed, struggling to keep her composure. ”You’re just jealous and regret dropping Lucas!”I laughed, the horrible flood of memories of Lucas’s cruelty in my past life washed over me like a suffocating wave. “I couldn’t care less that I’ll never have to touch that man. I hope you’re happy now Harper, you’ll be in his bed but you’ll never be his wife.”I left her there on the steps, a small, choking sound echoing after me down the hall.I stopped first at the room I had occupied in the castle for the last few months of my engagement, and was not surprised to see Lucas had ordered it to be scrubbed clean. The sheets were changed and all my belongings were packed in a small suitcase by the door.I sighed, picking them up and preparing for the walk home. I didn’t have much here, Lucas had always made a show of insulting me when I tried to make the room my own. I can’t believe it never occurred to me how much he didn’t want me there. My
My father shook his head. “That’s enough, young lady.” He said, swiping the letter away.“You can’t make this decision for me,” I said, leaping up to try to take it back.“We’re your parents—“ my father started.“That doesn’t give you the right to bind me to a man who wants to kill you!” I cried, becoming desperate.“Sweetheart, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Are you feeling alright?” My mother asked nervously, feeling my forehead for evidence of a fever.“I’m fine,” I exclaimed, “but I won’t be if you force me to marry Lucas! Can’t you see what he’s doing? You already know he’s using me for my connections, can’t you understand why? He will only abuse power, he wants to hurt us all!”My father groaned, looking at me with a mixture of concern and fear. “That’s enough. We’re not going to keep having this conversation. You’re clearly overwhelmed, maybe we should have let the engagement last a little longer so you wouldn’t panic.”“You’re not listening!” I cried.“You’re not se
I nod, swallowing my nerves. He closed the space between us, pressing his soft lips into mine in a gentle, chaste kiss. I returned it, raising myself on my tiptoes to reach him more easily.I opened my eyes as he pulled away, and saw the same surprise I felt mirrored in his face.“Great, I’ll edit these and send them to you. What do you think of this one?” Joseph asked, pulling me out of my contemplation. He showed us an intimate photo he’d captured, our eyes locked tenderly. “That’s perfect, find one with a kiss for me, I want to upload that as my social media avatar.” Caleb said, already beginning to unbutton the jacket Joseph had given him for the shoot.Joseph nodded, and left for his office.“You’re really as bad as a teenager, you’re already updating your relationship status online?” I said, removing the veil from my hair.“Don’t worry, it’s purely political.” He paused, looking up at me with a smirk. “You know I’ve never posted a woman I haven’t slept with yet. Lucas glares at me. “What is that supposed to mean?”I groan in frustration, and pull his engagement ring from my pocket. “This will never sit on my finger Lucas. I would rather die than be bound to you for the rest of my life.” It fell from my fingers, clinking pitifully on the marble steps.“But you’re my mate! We have a bond, you belong to me, you are tied to me–”“Yes! Lucas!” I shout, the hurt and anger I have felt since my rebirth bubbling over into my words. “I am supposed to be your mate, and you are supposed to be tied to me, too! But I refuse to be treated like a pawn instead of your partner.”I know what I have to do. I call on my wolf, but my connection to her is still dark. Even without Willow, I muster every ounce of my energy to call the mate bond into my mind, attacking it with the full force of my consciousness. It trembles, and splinters, still present, but weaker. It hurts us both, and Lucas stumbles back, his shocked expression etched into his face. “What the hell
His words shocked me, and I stared at him in surprise. A true marriage? With Caleb? I imagined all the times I had seen other women hanging off of him like ornaments, and all of his snide comments even now that we were allied together against Lucas. It made me want to laugh, but it also sobered me to the reality of our situation. Even if we were striking up something like a friendship, it didn’t change the fact that in the next few months, his fated mate was bound to appear. Regardless of the success of our union against Lucas, he would be separated from me sooner or later.I couldn’t agree to a marriage without any boundaries, like he was suggesting. It wouldn’t be fair to either of us.“I can’t,” I said, turning away from him. “I know you think you’re trying to be kind, but that’s not going to help us.”Caleb sighed, his face expressionless. “You know, as childish as you are, you never really deserved the shit Lucas put you through. I can’t promise to be a good husband, but I can pr
“What? No! That’s not…” I fumbled over my words, “That’s not what I meant.”“Oh? What do you mean then? That you want to be the one fawning over me, not the rest of my ‘fan-club’ as you put it.”I groaned, “Look, I think laying out some ground rules would be helpful. We haven’t gotten into any specifics of this arrangement, but before we proceed with the marriage, I think we have to.”“By all means,” Caleb said, gesturing for me to continue. “What do you want?””As a part of our contracted marriage, we should both be free to pursue our own love lives, since this is a political arrangement. As such, I won’t interfere with your lovers and you won’t interfere with mine.”“If that’s what you want,” Caleb said graciously.“It is, it’s what is best for both of us,” I said firmly. “But, if we can abide by those rules, I’ll move in with you. You’re right, I can’t stay here. I might as well get used to you before the wedding.”He smiled and nodded. “It’s late, and we both need some sleep. I’ll
I fell out of the bed, scrambling away from him as he advanced. I was nearly at the door when he grabbed me by the back of the neck. lifting me off the floor without effort. His breath was hot and sour in my face, “You are nothing without me, you cannot defy me.”He raised his other arm to strike me. But then the door burst open, and I was dropped as the sound of Lucas’s scream pierced my ears.“Don’t you touch her, you bastard!” My father’s voice echoed. He was standing above me, a candelabra waving frantically in his hands. Lucas held his hands up to his temple, where a streak of blood was beginning to trickle down his cheeks.“I’ve always liked you, Lucas, but take one more step and I won’t hesitate to strike you again.”Lucas lowered his arms, a smile breaking across his face. “This is all a misunderstanding. You must have seen the news reports by now, you know how delicate your daughter is. I–”“No!” My father countered, his eyes blazing with fury. “No more, I don’t care what sho
