“Please send Clark’s and Lai lunch through the driver” I hurriedly say to the Chef before dashing out of the house and into my car.

The drive to my office takes about 20 minutes and I’m inwardly grateful that I didn’t have to face traffic on my way to the office.

“Good morning,” Alice says, collecting my things. I smile, “good afternoon, are the clients inside?” I ask, checking my watch as I take note of the time. The meeting was set to hold by 9am and it is currently 8:59 am. Why I’m late is a different story and I don’t want to get into it.

She shakes her head, “not yet, they called to let us know that they would be a few minutes late as they encountered some issues on the road”.

I nod, “alright, that’s fine. We’ll wait for them in the meeting room” I say, feeling very grateful that they haven’t arrived, giving me sufficient time to collect myself.

I spend the next fifteen minutes going through the documents for the book signing and promotion before the client arrives. This is a fi

“Heyy” I say, carefully placing a kiss on Clark’s cheek for the sake of public appearances. “Hey babe, you look quite tired” he says, putting an arm around my waist, as we walk into the private room in the restaurant.I nod, “I had quite a day, if this wasn’t important to me and my business I would have rescheduled. I’ve barely had time to eat since I’ve been going from one meeting to another” I say to him.He has a serious look on his face as his assesses the situation, “I can always reschedule with him” he states. I shake my head, “no need, I’m already here so I prefer to get on with it and besides I’m too excited to reschedule”.He nods, “alright then, if you say so. How about getting something to eat, I’ll call the waiter to come take your order”. I smile, “thank you, but I’d like to eat after the meeting. I’m more tired than hungry, and I’d like to get a bit of sleep even if it’s just twenty minutes” I say, glancing at the time on my phone.Clark nods, “Alright, but there’s not e

“I understand that you’d like to discuss business with me” Todd says to which I nod I reply, “yes I do”. He smiles, “there’s no need for that. To be honest I was actually considering promoting some of my books with your company even before Clark spoke to me about it”.“I’ve been monitoring the results that authors that sign with you derive from the market and I can clearly state there’s no better choice than your company” he smiles.“So I’ll be in your office this Friday to discuss the intricacies of this book promotion and the contract if that’s fine with you” he says. I nod, “that’s fine with you, thank you so much for putting your trust in me and my company” I say, extending my hand for a handshake as I stand to my feet.He nods, “can’t wait to do business with you” he says, returning the handshake, “I’d like to stay back and discuss with you two but I have to run home and attend to Stella and our baby boy. I promised her I would be home by 6pm” he states, looking down at his watc

Clark stretches on the bed pushing the pillow dividing the bed we share for the 4th time this night towards me. “Remind me again why I agreed to get married to you and most importantly why I even agreed to share a bed with you” I sigh.Clark had convinced me the night we moved in that we had to share a room. He stated points that seemed reasonable, especially the fact that our parents could walk in anytime and discover us.But I think the main reason why I accepted that night was because I was tired and didn’t want to be alone in a house I’m not familiar with.He smiles, “the way I remember it, you literally begged to get married to me and you couldn’t wait to share a room with me” he says, turning on the light.I roll my eyes, “there’s absolutely no way in this world that I’d ever do that, you’re not even my type” I joke, inwardly admitting that he’s the type of guy I’d usually date. “Is it too late to get my own room?” I pout.“If I’m not your type, then who’s your type?” Clark asks

I stand in front of the mirror, my eyes sparkling with a bit of excitement as I take in my reflection. Seeing it’s been a while since I dressed up for a date, though it’s just a double date but still I’ll take what I can get. The burgundy dress drapes elegantly over my figure, accentuating my curves and making me feel confident. I run my hands over the soft fabric, feeling the delicate lace under my fingertips.A smile plays on my lips as I admire how the dress enhances my natural beauty. With a final adjustment to my hair and a touch of lipstick, I feel set to go as I grab my purse.“Lara” Clark calls out for the second time in a row, “we are going to be…”, “I’m ready” I say, cutting him off as I head downstairs.“The date is not for another one hour, and you should know that women need time to get ready, especially for a date” I say, walking towards him.He breaks into a smile at the sight of me. Wrapping his arms around my waist, “you look breathtaking my darling. I guess it makes

I spend the drive home dozing off and waking up intermittently, “are we home yet?” I ask tiredly at Clark’s nudging.“Yes we are” I hear him chuckle. I scrunch my face into a frown as I force my eyes open, “what’s so funny?” I ask, trying to make sense of my environment before making a move to alight the car.“Nothing” he shrugs, “you’re just so cute when you’re tired. Do you need help getting down?” He asks. I nod, “yes I do” I reply placing my hands on his shoulders as I alight the car.He wraps his arms around me to steady me as we walk towards the door. “You do know that I can walk by myself right?” I ask, inwardly grateful for the support. He shakes his head, “at this point I doubt, you've tripped twice now and I’m not risking you falling and hurting yourself” he says.“You’re so cute” I say without thinking, he chuckles, “thanks, I’m glad to hear that my wife thinks I’m cute” he replies. I shake my head, “I didn’t mean to say that, what I actually meant was thank you for your he

I spend the next five days purposely avoiding Clark. Every morning I wake up an hour before Clark usually wakes up to give me sufficient time to have my bath, get dressed and then leave for work. And in the evenings I purposely return home around 4pm, a time guaranteed that Clark will still be at work.I know we agreed to not leave things awkward but that was said in the heat of the moment. To be honest it just feels like we crossed a path that we can never return from.I look down at my watch, inwardly praying that Alice wraps up this internal staff meeting as soon as possible. Usually the meeting is supposed to end by 4pm, but everyone was busy with one thing or the other relating to work so we had to start by 4:30 instead of the usual 4:00 clock that we normally start.“What’s your opinion boss?” Alice asks, pulling me out of my thoughts. My eyes scan the room as I notice everyone’s eyes on me as they await my reply.I smile, “Alice could you kindly explain what I’m supposed to giv

“Hi Clark” I say, wide eyed, “what are you doing at home? The security man said you weren't around and your car is not outside too” I say to Clark, who’s comfortably sitting on the sofa.“Come sit” he says, tapping the space beside him. “Why?” I ask warily as I move towards him, he smiles, “Lara it’s not a crime for husband and wife to talk. Is it?” He asks.“No it’s not” I reply, settling beside him. “How come you’re home so early?” I ask, not bothering to look at him as I speak. “It was quite obvious that you have been avoiding me in the last five days today inclusive, so I decided to give you a little surprise so that we can have a discussion” he says.“So what do you want to talk about, you have to make it quick because I have things I need to finish upstairs” I say. He nods, “I won’t take much of your time and I know that this is another method to avoid me”.“So that brings me to the topic of our conversation” he smiles, “Lara, why are you avoiding me?” He asks. “Avoiding you” I

“Are those all my things?” I ask Clark who has taken it upon himself to help me pack for the team bonding outing. He’s even taken it upon himself to pick all my outfits for the three days we will be staying there. He nods, “that’s everything. I’ve placed the outfit you’d be wearing today on the bed, you can change into that while I finish packing our luggage” he says, not bothering to look at me with his eyes fixed on the luggages.I walk towards the bed picking up a light blue sports shirt matched with plain black shorts, “are we playing soccer?” I tease. He shakes his head, “you don’t need to dress this cool to play soccer. It’s just a nice way to dress down, I’ve also added a nice jewellery set to go with the outfit” “How nice it is to tell people that my husband dressed me today” I say, picking the jewellry from the bed, “thank you, it feels nice to be pampered” I say, before walking into the bathroom to change my clothes.Once I’m done I return to the room, but Clark is gone an

Annie nods, her expression serious. “I understand; this is a very serious matter. What would you like me to do?” she asks, her tone shifting to one of readiness and support. I can sense her commitment to addressing this issue, and it gives me a moment of reassurance amidst the issues at hand.I nod, my expression serious as I meet her gaze. “It is a serious issue, and it’s bigger than you imagine. I’d like you to come with me to answer some questions and also help identify your subordinate who was directly involved in the hiring process of Rita. It’s crucial that I speak with her, too, to get a clearer picture of what went wrong.” She nods, a look of resolve crossing her face. “Please give me a minute,” she states, her voice steady, before exiting the room. I take a moment to gather my thoughts, the weight of the situation pressing heavily on my mind. In a few moments, the door swings open, and she returns, this time not alone but with a younger girl by her side. “This is Kelly,”

“Are you willing to testify at court?” I ask, my voice steady and devoid of any emotion. Rita’s response is immediate, her head shaking slowly, almost as if she’s trying to physically reject the weight of my question. “I’m sorry, Lara, but I can’t,” she states, her voice trembling slightly with the weight of her words. “I can’t betray my cousin like that.” Her eyes dart away, avoiding my gaze as if the very act of looking at me might shatter the fragile barrier she’s built around her loyalty. I nod, a hint of irony creeping into my voice. “You already betrayed her by telling me the truth in relation to this matter, but don’t worry, I won’t force you to do what you don’t want to do.” I pause for a moment, letting my words sink in, watching as her expression shifts, a mixture of guilt and defiance flickering across her face. “It’s funny, isn’t it? You were so comfortable lying against me in the court of law, and now you’re hesitant to say the truth.” I can see her jaw tighten at my

Rita opens her mouth to speak, but I cut her off, my voice firm and unyielding. “Remember that the system will log the exact time you arrived each day by tracking when you swiped your access card. So think twice before you try to lie or come up with some flimsy excuse,” I say, letting my tone carry the weight of authority. I lean in slightly, my gaze piercing through her defences, waiting for her to reconsider her next words. The silence stretches as she weighs her options, knowing full well that I’m not just making empty threats. She hangs her head, feeling defeated, “Yes, Lara. I’ve been coming into work late every day for the past week. I’m sorry,” she admits, her voice barely above a whisper as she raises her head to meet my gaze. I nod slowly, my expression unwavering. “I need a tangible reason for why you’ve been strolling into the office late every afternoon,” I say, my voice steady and devoid of any emotion.“If you can’t provide a valid explanation, your pay will be docked,

As I step out of the office, my attention is immediately drawn to Rita, who is just settling into her desk. "Good afternoon," I say, offering a tight smile that barely masks my curiosity. I gently knock on the doorframe to catch her attention, the sound echoing slightly in the quiet of the afternoon.Rita looks up, her eyes widening in surprise. "Oh, good afternoon, Lara! You’re here!" she exclaims, her voice filled with shock as she rises to her feet.I nod, a smirk dancing on my lips. “I work here, remember?” I say, letting a subtle hint of sarcasm slip into my tone. She looks up at me, her cheeks flushing slightly as she nods, “Of course, sorry ma’am,” her voice dropping as she glances down. That action instantly transports me back to memories of Alice, who would always adopt that same piteous look whenever she was called out for something. A wave of annoyance washes over me as I watch Rita mimic that behaviour. “Anyway,” I say, shifting my gaze away from her and scanning her clut

“Where are you heading to?” Clark asks, a confused look on his face as he rises to his feet, his brow furrowing slightly. “To the office,” I state, my tone laced with surprise at his question. It’s almost as if he can’t believe I’d choose to dive straight into the investigation on a day like today.“Today?” He asks, his voice tinged with disbelief. “Yeah, the sooner I get started with the investigation and communication approval, the sooner the lies made by Alice can be revealed.” I can feel the urgency in my words, the determination to clear the air and gather sufficient and compelling evidence. He nods, a spark of understanding igniting in his eyes. “Alright, I’ll come with you. Thank you so much for your time and dedication,” he says, his voice steady and sincere as he exchanges handshakes with both Becky and Elvis.“Yeah, thank you. I’ll contact you as soon as I can,” I say, exchanging firm handshakes with Elvis. Then, I turn to Becky, pulling her into a warm goodbye hug, “Take ca

“And what is the conversation with the HR team meant to achieve?” I ask, slightly leaning in as I wait for Becky’s response. Her face scrunches up a bit, which is a very common trait that she shows when she is thinking, and I can’t help but find it endearing. “Speaking with the HR unit helped us understand the hiring process and if there was any bias involved,” she explains, her tone growing more animated as she continues. “This could help us prove to the court that Alice brought Rita into the firm for ill intentions. If we can show that there was favouritism or a lack of proper procedure in Rita’s hiring, it’ll cast doubt on her credibility. We need to establish that her testimony is tainted by her connection to Alice, which means her words can’t be trusted by the court since she’s not independent from any of the parties involved in the case.”I nod, absorbing her words, feeling the gears in my mind turning. “So, if we can uncover any discrepancies in the hiring process, it not onl

“Good afternoon, Mr. Clark,” Elvis says, his voice warm and inviting as he stretches out his hand for a handshake.“Good afternoon, Elvis,” Clark responds, meeting his grip with a firm yet friendly shake, the corners of his mouth lifting into a light smile that hints at a shared camaraderie. “And it’s just Clark,” he adds, his tone casual and approachable.Elvis nods appreciatively, a hint of amusement dancing in his eyes. “Apologies, afternoon Mrs..” he begins, but before he can finish, I interject with a playful smile, “Afternoon, Elvis!” “It’s just Lara,” I continue, teasingly cutting him off. “What’s up with him today? He never calls me Mrs.” I chuckle, shaking my head in mock disbelief as I turn to face Becky. “Good afternoon!” I exclaim, pulling her into a tight embrace. She shrugs lightly as I finally release her from my embrace. “How are you doing?” I ask, gesturing for us to settle onto the plush sofa. “Didn’t you notice that there were no media personnel in the room?” Clark asks, his smile widening. I shake my head, feeling a twinge of embarrassment. “I didn’t take notice since I came in at the last minute. I know that most court cases are open to the public, so I just sort of assumed that they were there,” I state, my voice trailing off as I glance around the room.He shakes his head, “well, they weren’t. I personally requested the court to make the case a private trial, with only the necessary attendees being allowed to view the proceedings.” “Really? And when did you do this?” I ask, intrigued by the proactiveness of the man before me. There’s something admirable about his initiative, and it makes me curious about his deeper feelings for me. “Two weeks before the court case,” he replies, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that suggests he’s not merely following protocol but doing this for a deeper reason. “It takes a week to apply and process the documents submitted

Clark walks towards me, his presence radiating warmth as he wraps me in his embrace, pulling me close as he slides his arms around my waist. “What’s wrong?” he asks, his voice laced with concern, turning his face just enough to catch a glimpse of mine, searching for the truth behind my silence.I shake my head gently, feeling the weight of my thoughts as I release myself from his comforting hold. I turn to face him fully, wanting him to see the turmoil swirling in my mind. “Nothing, really. I’m just thinking about the court case hearing from last week Monday,” I say, letting out a heavy sigh that seems to carry all the tension I’ve been holding inside. “I’m sorry,” I say, frowning deeply, my face a canvas of worry as I replay the events in my mind. The way Alice and her lawyer, Rick, manipulated the entire situation feels like a bitter pill to swallow. “I can’t believe they would twist the entire story to their advantage like that,” I continue, my voice tinged with frustration. “To m
