I struggled to fall asleep, too excited about what tomorrow would bring. Eventually I must have drifted off as I woke up as my mother knocked on my door.
“Sky, time to get up. We need to be at the temple in an hour.”
I got out of bed and went to have a shower. I thought about dressing up for the occasion, but they give you a robe to wear, so where wasn’t any point..
The affinity ceremony was open to the public, but most of the time it’s only the family and friends that attend. In my case it’s only me, my brother and my mother. My father had to work and Dawn had her studies. She said she would attempt to stop by, as she would already be at the temple. I didn’t have high hopes, but it didn’t really bother me. I had already come to terms that my family wouldn’t make the time. After all, I wasn’t their favourite daughter.
Dawn studied to be part of the inner circle, which meant that she worked closely with the high priestess to learn all about the magical ceremonies being conducted. It’s an important job as the high priestess dealt with everything; sabbaths, esbats, funerals, handfasting, affinity ceremonies. They even had a hand in the dark moon rituals, however Hecate would turn up and led them.
Life seemed easy for my sister, she got handed everything. I didn’t know what I wanted to do after school, but spell casting had always fascinated me. Understanding the reason behind how and why a spell works. Maybe I could become a scholar. I wonder what my parents would say about that.
When me, Night and my mother arrived at the temple, a woman in a white robe greeted me and told me to go head. Before every ceremony, the people that were taking part in them must go thought the waterfall pool that was next to the stairs that lead to the temple.
It was there for cleansing, as a ceremony could not be conducted without cleansing. It meant that in order to enter the temple, I had to wash away all my negative energy that may affect the outcome of the ceremony. When I was clean, or at least spiritually clean, I made my way up the stairs and entered the temple. The High priestess greeted me and showed me to the changing room, where I changed into a white robe.
I walked up to the altar that was placed at the far end of the temple. The altar contained several symbolic tokens, flowers, herbs, candles, all representing the different elements. Thought of Dawns affinity ceremony entered my head. Thee had been flowers, fire, and mists, meaning she had an affinity for Earth, Fire and Water. I hoped that I would have an affinity for three elements as well. That way I would be safe. We hadn’t talked about the chances of me being chosen for the sacrifice, but it had been on my mind a lot lately.
I created the circle and sat down inside. I called earth to me and felt as the elemental energy washed over me. Next was water. I could almost feel like I became one with the element. After, I turned to the south and asked for Fire to come and join me and wake up my senses. I could feel a fiery flame burn inside me. Lastly, I turned to the west, and Air, feeling how I grew lighter as the energy of air washed over me. A moment later it was all over, and it was time to thank the elements and close the circle.
When I finished, I approached the high priestess.
“Congratulations, you have an affinity for air and water.” The high priestess looked into my eyes. “Blessed be.”
I bow my head “blessed be.”
As I left the temple, I couldn’t help to feel disappointed. I should be happy. I could have only had one affinity, but at least I had two. It still wasn’t good enough. I wanted to be special, like my sister. But now I risked being part of the sacrifices. It may not seem like it’s a high chance, as they drew names at random, but any family who only has one child, has the right to defer.
The dark moon that lines up with Samhain was when Hecate would take the magic of three witches in order to protect the village. There used to be more sacrifices being done. I don’t know the specifics, but they made a deal with Hecate and nowadays she will only sacrifice 3 teenagers a year. She announces the names on Samhain, and they carried out the ritual on the dark moon that followed. Samhain was just around the corner, meaning that so what the sacrifices.
When I got home, I spent some time outside, practicing my magic. I stared into a bucket of water, willing it to move. At first nothing happened. I must have stared at it for at least an hour.
“Sky, please come in and set the table.” My mother’s voice sounded from the house.
Why was it always me that needed to do everything? Anger filled me and the water in the bucket exploded all over and got me drenched. Well, I guess my magic was working, just not the way I wanted it too.
Luckily the school taught us how to control it and now that I had learned where my strength lied, I would gain two new classes, one for water magic and one for air. I couldn’t wait to get back to school and start learning.
For the next couple of weeks, I learned some basic control over my magic. I had expected the classes to teach me how to harness my special elements and how to use them to my advantage, but most of the lessons revolve around control and keeping the magic in check. I know it was important, but I couldn’t wait to learn how to create water and get it to move by my will.
Me and my family were making our way into the village centre to the temple. Dawn wasn’t with us, as she had arrived at the temple in the morning for her studies. We didn’t always attend all the ceremonies, especially not the Esbats, as my mother believed them to be a waste of time. She was very strict about the sabbats, though.Because of the big celebrations and the fact that we were technically not part of the ceremony, we didn’t need to cleanse ourselves before we went inside. It was a good thing, because the weather had not been the nicest lately, and having to cleanse ourselves in freezing water would not be very enjoyable and there would even be a risk of catching pneumonia. Many people that attended the ceremony, cleaned their hands in the waterfall pool for symbolism. When we entered the temple, we had to navigate around several groups
I woke up in the morning, knowing what I needed to do. The dreams had turned up after I had asked the fates for guidance, so maybe they were showing me a sign.I sneaked out before anyone had woken up. I thought about bringing Lightning, but not knowing what I would walk into, I decided against it. She was better off staying in the stable, besides my family needed her.I started walking away from our house. Following the path shown in my dream the best as I could. After I had walked for hours, I felt defeated and sat down. Thinking I had made a mistake. Maybe I should just go back home. While I was sitting in the grass, contemplating what to do, a big grey cat came up to me. I gave him a cuddle before he walked off.I followed him with my gaze. Before he disappeared from my vision, he stopped and looked back a
I sat down on the bed and collected my thoughts. Was this really my new home? Leaf had said that I was free to leave if I wanted to. Maybe I should just go back home? I had been crazy to follow a dream, however I could not shake Leaf’s words that echoed in my head. ‘The fates led you here for a reason.’ Maybe I should stick around and find out what that reason was.I got up from the bed and walked out of the room to search for Leaf. I found her stirring the pot in the kitchen. When she saw me, she put down the wooden spoon and turned around to face me with a smile on her face.“Let me show you the rest of the house.”I followed her as she walked to the other side of the kitchen and opened a door leading to another room. When we entered the room, two girls looked up and gave us a smile,
After a few days, I had settled into their routine. I sat with Leaf and listened to the stories of her life. It was crazy to think about everything she had to go through just because she was different. The stories that we had all heard about growing up were about her parents, and the demon was her father. The goddess in her dreams had told her that her father was still alive and hinted that he never would have abandoned her, had he known she existed. Which begged the question, why did he abandon her?One morning, while I was up at the library, Leaf stopped by. We talked about the lack of magic and what it had been doing to everyone here. She told me to follow her, and she led me into a small room at the end of the library. There was a chair and a desk in one corner, but what shocked me more was the wall to the side of the desk. It was covered with research about spells.
One day some strangers walked into our house and Leaf made us all disappear like she did every time someone stumbles upon us. Maybe it was some new recruits? I when back to the book I was reading. A moment later Leaf called me.“Sky, come over here dear. This is my father and daughter.”I was in shock as I continued walking towards them. Her father was the demon everyone at the village feared, the one that Hecate was supposed to keep us safe from. She had obviously failed. After hearing Leaf’s stories, I did not fear this demon as it was clear to me that he wasn’t out to kill us all. He would have already done so if he wanted to, especially because he was already here. He looked really young, so it was hard to picture him as Leaf’s father. She looked to be in her fifties, wh
To my gratification, they decided we were going to walk over there instead of teleporting. We walked through a forest. It took us at least 10 minutes before I could see something that could be a cabin. As we got closer, there were several wolves and humans around, though I was pretty sure that they were wolves too.A guy that had a sturdy build and ginger hair walked up to Jax.“I heard everything Abigail said to you. I may not like you, but you have my alliance and the pack. We need to come up with a plan to get Leah and Seth out of the house. Abigail is watching them like hawks now. Leah’s in no state of doing anything, so I couldn’t get her out and Seth didn’t want to leave her alone in the house, considering everything.”At first I
Jax shouted from downstairs, his voice laced with panic. Cassie answered back, but Jax must have not heard, as the panic in his voice became more evident with every shout. We quickly made our way downstairs. The moment Jax laid his eyes on Cassie, his body relaxed. He walked over to us and gave Cassie a hug.“Leah’s missing. I need to talk to Freya. I’ll get you to Mark and the wolves. He can fill you in on what’s happened.”I followed Cassie’s lead and took Jax’s hand. Preparing myself for the weird sensation that accompanied the teleportation. The thought of seeing Mark again got me excited, even though the circumstances could have been better. When we arrived in the woods outside the cabin, I walked inside, leaving Cassie alone with Jax to say goodbye. I felt silly for no
Voices woke me up from my sleep. It took me a while to realise that it was Jax’s voice.“Freya said to follow our hearts and use our connection to Leah,”“That doesn’t really make sense”. I could hear the confusion in Cassie’s voice, I didn’t completely understand it..Before I even registered what I was doing, I spoke up. “But you’re related.” I quickly put my hand over my mouth. Jax and Cassie looked over at me and it felt like I had joined a private conversation.Jax’s eyes met mine, “Does that make a difference?”His answer surprised me. He was supposed to be this really old demon, but most of the time he acted like he was the same age as
I was standing next to the makeshift stage by the big oak tree, watching as the Alpha entered the stage. It amazed me how everything had turned out. Not only did I have my magic back, but I also was standing next to the love of my life and Freya had gifted me with the ability to turn into a wolf. After Mark had seen me in my wolf form, he had insisted that we go to the alpha, to ask if I could join the pack as well. The alpha had agreed, and we were now waiting for the pack ceremony to start.“...Freya has a few words she likes to say before we start.”My thought’s go cut short when I heard the Alpha mention Freya’s name and I moved my attention to the stage.“Thank you Alpha Derek.&r
“You’re back,” Cassie shouted as she made her way towards me.“And you’re not dead,” Leah chimed in.“Did you ever doubt I wouldn’t be back?” I said with a smile.Cassie ignored Leah. “What did he say?”“He wants to personally give us his blessing.”“Does that mean I get to see my dad?” Cassie said, a wide smile appearing on her face.I hated to burst her bubble. “You will, on your eighteenth birthday.”The smile on Cassie’s face faded. “Why doesn’t he want to see me.”
We spend the next couple of days going back and forth to the witch village to help out. It was nice seeing my family again, but Night was still avoiding me. We had eventually found Dawn in the ruins, piled on top of the high priestess. It looked like she had sacrificed herself to save the high priestess. Most of her bones had been broken, and it was speculated that she had taken a hit from a stone wall or maybe the ceiling falling on top of her.The high priestess was still alive, but in terrible shape. Part of me wished she would die. She deserved it for what she had put us through. Maybe if we had gotten to my sister sooner, she could still have been alive, but I guess fate had other plans for her. They were planning a massive funeral ceremony for everyone that had got killed in the crossfire or when the building collapsed. Leah had found the ceremony i
When I got back to the house, Leah was in the kitchens cooking by the looks of it and Cassie was setting the table.I walked over and gave her a kiss before turning to Leah. “I didn’t know you could cook.”She gave me a smile. “I was worried you’d stop feeding me if you knew. Besides, I only cook on special occasions.”Me and Cassie sat down on the table as Leah came over with the food. We ate in silence for a while, enjoy the rich flavours of the casserole Leah had made.“So, how did Nick take the news?” Leah asked.I swallowed my food before meeting her gaze. “I haven’t told him yet.”“Scared he’d kill
I woke up when I heard the door to the cabin close. Mark had left earlier that day to attend some pack business. Technically, he wasn’t part of the pack yet, but he had told me that the Alpha had plans to perform the ceremony as soon as things had calmed down.I got up and walked into the living room, hoping Mark would have some news, when I saw Cassie.“Hi Cassie.”She gave me a smile and a wave. The massive rock on her hand almost blinded me.“Holy Goddess,” I said as I made my way towards her to inspect the ring.“When did this happen?”“Last night” she beamed with happiness.
I woke up from the sunlight reflecting from the waterfall, causing flecks of light to appear in the walls. I looked over at Cassie, still peacefully asleep. A big smile found my lips. I wasn’t ready to go back home to reality, so instead of getting up, I put my arm around Cassie and pulled her closer to me. Kissing the back of her head as I breathed in her scent. I was overjoyed with happiness.Eventually Cassie stirred and we reluctantly got up.“How about a swim before we go back?” I said with a smile.“Won’t it be cold?”“There’s only one way to find out,” I said as I grabbed hold of Cassie’s hand and jumped into the water. The water was just cold enough to wake u
Me and Mark had gone up from the sofa and were currently watching the last bit of sun disappear at the horizon.“Ready to go outside?”I nodded.“The pack house is still open for dinner, or if you prefer we can go somewhere else,” Mark said.“The pack house is fine,” I said as I looked at my hands. My skin was still red, but the blisters seemed to have gone away. I wouldn’t want to be out around humans looking like this, even if it wasn’t painful, I was bound to get some funny stares. At least the wolves knew me and what we all been through. They wouldn’t give it a second thought. Some of them had some gruesome scars on display themselves.I got my coat and sca
I woke up before the sun was up. My body felt rejuvenated and I couldn’t wait to spread my wings. I wrote Cassie a note before I made my way over to the window and transformed into a crow.I flew high in the sky, enjoying the chilly wind under my wings. The sky had turned a light shade of blue, the sun would get up soon. I thought about Freya and teleported to her realm. Maybe she was at home. I slowly made my way over to her cottage. My thoughts replaying all the events in my head. I still didn’t understand why Cassie had not run away from me. She had seen the monster that I truly was. It warmed my heart knowing she was still by my side despite everything. When I got to the cottage, no one was home. She usually knew I was coming, but there was no welcome, no newly brewed tea. I didn’t even see her two cats that were always hanging around. She
I was running fast through the forest. Much faster than I had ever run before. But I seemed to be aware of everything around me, the smells, the light movement of the wind, the sharpness and colours of the trees.I was gracefully swaying in and out between the trees, the placement of my feet precise. I looked down and saw my paws connecting to the ground. It was a chilly day, but the coldness didn’t bother me. My fur kept me warm. The sun was peeking out from the horizon, but I felt no fear. The sunlight could not hurt me in this form. I continued running. I heard a twig break behind me, I tried to run faster. But eventually a massive wolf jumped me and got me to a stop. I looked up and saw Mark in his wolf form. “You may be fast but you can’t outrun me.” he said in my mind as he licked my muzzle.
