A story was once told of a man who beat the Nephilims of the North. It was quite a famous story amongst the knight guards and state guards. It was back in the days when Slejj and Alvatrone were second rank lieutenants, battling for each other to see who would become the next commander of the Independent States. King Higo, the current king at that time, alongside his fellow ruler Hashi had arranged for a ceremonial tournament. A competition to see who was worthy to vie for the role of the next Commander.
At that time it was obvious who amongst the army would reach the final showdown, it was always Alvatrone and Slejj. Everybody knew that. Going into the competition those who registered only did so to fill in the vacancies in order for the tournament to proceed, meanwhile the entire army awaited for the final showdown. The two rivals had been going at each other ever since they joined the army. At that moment they were seen as equals, and the tournament was to be the deciding factor, a final face-off to finally rank one above the other. They did not anticipate what was to come of the event.
Registering last was a slacker, the laziest of men amongst the army ranks, Honorary State Guard Garvin Nez. Nobody knew why he was interested in the tournament since he was never interested in anything at all, except food and sleep. Some even questioned how he got the honorary State Guard rank in the first place. All in all, he was called out, his match against another knight guard was to be the opening match for the tournament.
The rules of the match were simple. No magic was to be used, including magical weapons and items. Participants were allowed to choose weapons of close combat, that included swords and clubs, which meant spears and arrows were rejected. A win was either by knockout or forcing the opponent to quit. Healing mages were present to attend to the fighters after the match so it was a no halts barred fight.
The tournament began and nobody even bothered to watch the first-round fights. Garvin made quick work of his opponent, proceeding to the next round. The following day was where things got interesting.
The fights got harder and longer, attracting more fans to fill the crowd. Alvatrone went up against tough rivals, State Guards who had graduated with him in the same class year. Slejj also went up against his fellow State Guards. Both fights were gruesome and tough. Both Alvatrone and Slejj had to dig deep into their strengths to secure wins and advance to the next round. Then came Garvin’s match. He won the match so fast people were doubtful of his victory. Although his opponent was a state guard on his own the crowd was still not convinced of his win. Then came the semi-finals. Alvatrone was matched up against Garvin. The match started as expected, Alvatrone was making light work of the layabout. Then, things suddenly took a turn.
With the king and the dark bender and the rest of the crowd watching, Garvin dominated the aspiring commander with so much ease it was hard to believe. Landing critical blows after critical blows he brought Alvatrone to the ground, even going as far as disarming him despite him being known to be an impeccable swordsman. With a victory over Alvatrone by knockout, he pulled out the biggest upset in the competition, clinching a spot at the finals. Even Slejj could not believe it. He knew very well how capable his rival was and seeing him lose in such a fashion drove fear into his bones.
The next day arrived and the finals were set to begin, the crowd was now bigger than ever. Everybody wanted to witness the man who beat Alvatrone. Garvin stepped onto the arena, the crowd was confused, they did not know how to react to him. Most people did not even know who he was. The table was set and the match began. The two squared off for quite some time. They were evenly matched. Although they looked even, Slejj looked like he was putting in a lot of effort, using every bit of strength and will he had to fight, while on the other hand, Garvin didn’t even look like he was trying.
Moments into the match, Garvin decided to get a little more serious and began a string of attacks that disoriented his opponent. He beat the life out of Slejj, the entire arena fell silent, even Hashi and Higo were in awe. Slejj fell to his knees but he wasn't ready to give up yet. He pushed past his limits yet it was still not enough, he was dominated. It was like a canine playing with his prey before devouring it.
The victor became obvious after a while since Slejj looked like he was moments away from passing out, then the unpredictable happened, it took everyone by surprise.
When it seemed like Garvin was going to be the clear victor, he stopped attacking. Slejj was already kneeling on the ground, unable to stand and defend himself, he couldn’t even lift an arm. His eyes were swollen shut and his cheeks were bloated. Garvin retreated and announced that he had quit the fight, and the victory was awarded to Slejj. Everybody was so confused, they had no idea what that man was thinking. Garvin walked off and disappeared, probably yearning for a nap.
Egos were bruised that day. And since his performance at the tournament Garvin went back underground. After that, both Slejj and Alvatrone would routinely challenge him to fight but all requests would be turned down. Even after countless appeals no evidence could be found that he cheated, most people believed that, but he was not a gifted, so he wouldn’t be able to use magic. He went back to drinking wine and sleeping and never had the interest in climbing the ranks. Eventually, he was assigned to head the Boundary Defectors State. Since that tournament, he was the only man known to have defeated Both Alvatrone and Slejj, even though Slejj won the tournament everybody else knew who the real victor was.
And so his story would become a myth. The man who defeated both commanders. He would have easily become a commander himself and many asked him that question, why he forfeited the match. They never got a definite answer. Fast forward five years after the invasion. After the tyrant took over. They invaded Defectors State soon afterward and imprisoned the soldiers in that State, locked them inside their own prison. Garvin was amongst the captives. As he was casually napping in his cell one day a mysterious visitor came to him one night and told him that two moons from then, the captives in Royal Republic will escape and make their way to Defectors State.
He told him it was up to him to free the captives in Defectors State and join the rest of the group. He said he would come back and tell him the day before the coupe, that he should break them free by then. Since that day Garvin had been working out in his cell, reviving his old self, reviving the man who made his myth. The day of the Coupe had arrived and soon after Anato Strider freed the Captives in Royal Republic he made his way to Defectors State.
There he was, standing outside Garvin’s cell.
“Hey! Hey, wake up you stupid goat its time!”
Garvin got up from his bed and willed himself to his feet.
“Ugh, you again? I thought I had like two more moons,”
“It's been two moons you fool. Now get up and get these people out of here. I got more important things to do.”
“Like what combing your hair? I just saw you standing there for like five minutes straight combing and patting your hair,”
“I keep telling people teleporting ruins my hair! And these perfect strands don’t make themselves, you don’t wake up looking this good old man.”
“Gosh teenagers, must be hard working with you.”
“Don’t talk back to me, you're the one needing help you fool. And make it quick, some lady in the front cell kept shouting your name in her sleep I think she might wake up the guards. Kept talking about how the two of you are gonna get married or something and have kids.”
“Felista? That is one crazy woman.”
“Look old man I didn’t come here for storytime. Make it quick. And you know the route right? Lead your people there”
“Yes, I heard you the first five hundred times, a village near the forest at the border of Free state.”
Anato stepped back and began his incarnation, “I call to you great presence! Heed to my orison and grant me your unfathomable power. For we serve you oh great link, our path to Tomasa!”
As soon as he concluded his speech, all the cell doors clicked open and the shackles around the prisoners’ ankles and wrists broke free, waking all of them up. Anato gave Garvin one last look before dissipating into embers of orange specks that spread around the hallway. Garvin stepped out of the cell stretching his hands and yawning. He heard the guards’ footsteps rushing towards the hallway.
“Alright then, I guess it's time to go to work!”
The guards turned their attention towards him.“Get back to your cell! Right now!”Garvin ignored the orders backed at him. A travesty. He folded the sleeves of his over-sized garment and began hopping around on his toes like a rabbit, loosening up his stiff limbs, as his feet landed on the ground they kicked dust into the air.“Get back to your cell now prisoner or you die!”Garvin kept ignoring them like they weren't even there. The front line was forced to engage. Two of the guards pulled out lances and advanced aggressively towards him.“It’s been a while since I let loose, now come at me with all you've got… and don’t hold back, because I won't!”He leaped into the air with tremendous ability, concocting his body in ways not thought to be possible, producing a powerful roundhouse kick that ripped the spear tips of the lances away. His feet kissed the ground gracefully and he pushed himself forward, barreling towards the two disarmed guards. Fingers sunk deep into their throats an
“He is active again! He is out there roaming our inter-realm link, or as the mortals call it, the Independent States.”“But of course he can only manifest his physical form inside the barrier, the celestial walls allow him to do so, outside the inter-realm link he cannot manifest. Therefore his power remains limited to his followers inside the walls.”“Yes of course, with the reduction of his followers his power has substantially reduced, therefore he does not have the power of creation now, so he is no threat. Let us allow him to continue roaming the inter-link realm, it is the least we can do to entertain a traitor like him.”The rest of the beings nodded in agreement. A regular meeting had been arranged. The greater council of heaven was called upon to discuss issues largely affecting the events of one of the realms. Heaven realm was where celestial beings lived. There existed five realms in total; Heaven realm, Hell realm, Spiritual Realm, Null realm, and Earth realm. All the oth
She arrived and knocked softly on the door, even though it was wide open and she could clearly see him sitting on one of the chairs, facing the entrance.“Come in,”“Thank you Mr. Valienta”she replied, walking towards the table and placing the basket on it.“Mrs. Melo packed some supplies for you, there’s a whole bunch of vegetables and this week's batch of meat we got from the hunting session yesterday, I'm sure you're going to love the rabbit meat, it's delicious! It should cover the rest of the week. I also brought you those petals to put in your tea. They help in numbing the pain a little bit so be sure to use them sparingly because they are rare to find.”“I thought I told you to tell her I can take care of myself. I don’t need her sending you up here every single time like some messenger.”“Oh, on the contrary, Mr. Valienta I am the one that offers to come here! I hope my company doesn’t bother you.”“Not at all…”“Okay, now as I prepare lunch you take out your laundry and plac

The right throne was empty, it was always reserved for Kanchi Asobi but he was attending to other obligations hence he did not make it to the meeting. On the left sat Lady Melo. The platform in front of the raised thrones was where Dakario and the Administrative head stood. Supporting the platform were pillars on all the corners, the pillars on the right side were rarefied for Shinshin and Kuro. The front pillar to the left was Anato Strider’s spot, where he would stand and fidget with his dagger. The back left pillar was always empty for the longest time, but with the induction of the ninth head Daito, that spot would, later on, be declared his.“Is everyone ready? C
After the trerth invasion, people were sure that they had been wiped out by the monsters, but noone ever bothered to confirm that notion. Weapons were unsheathed at the sight of the arrivals. The environment quickly became hostile.“One step closer and you're dead!”The ladies looked at them, disgusted by their presence. Daito stood beside the administrative head like a scarecrow. The ladies shifted their focus and directed it towards him.“It is him! The village purger!”Grips on their weapons tightened. Stories of his purging had been circulating around the close circle of villages, merchants who were traveling through multiple villages brought stories along, stories of how a ruthless man was running amuck. They were ready for him, all they were awaiting were the go-ahead orders from their chief and they would let loose on those two intruders.Lady Melo finally appeared from amongst the crowd that was building up in front of the entrance. She hoisted her hands high and shouted her orders out, forcing the soldiers to disengage.“At ease! These men are not here to fight!”She casually walked up to the two men and turne
“Did you notice anything?”“… no.”“Why are you hesitating to answer me? Are you lying to me?”Alvatrone eyed him intensively. Could the slave emblem’s effects be wearing off? It was definitely one of the strongest and unbreakable spells, so there was no way he could be overcoming it. He decided to shrug it off and they advanced towards the next village. On arrival, they could hear the loud blaring of horns from within the village, moments after the musical display, several men sprinted into view from within the village, armed to the teeth.“It’s the village purger! We won't let you violate our village you insolent fools! Now leave before we make you!”Alvatrone looked down at them, disappointing by how willing they were to waste their lives trying to fight them off.“This again, can you please deal with them, and don’t make it too bloody this time!”Without looking at him, Daito nodded and took off his robe, allowing it to slide off his back and fall to the ground. He directed his r
The village was so well hidden amongst the cover of forest trees that Tyndale didn’t even manage to locate it during his conquest. He also realized the Vurhan's occupied the forest and if he engaged with them, with the limited manpower he had, it would prove costly. As Garvin and his multitude entered the forest, lumberjacks who were taking a break from their strenuous work noticed the oncoming herd. Their panicked legs ran back to the village to sound the alarm. From afar Garvin could hear the blaring horns. Soon after a group emerged from the forest armed with axes and Spears.“Stop where you are!”An old man shouted. Pointing his ax towards the crowd. Garvin stepped forward with his hands raised.“We mean you no harm! We have come here in peace!”The faded insignia of the Honorary State Guard on his torn raiment caught the old man’s eye. He spat on the ground, cussing out the insignia.“A wretched state guard! Setting foot in my home! I am the chief of this village, and we do not a
They rushed into the palace, two awls trailing behind them, holding a huge wooden box. When they were climbing the flight of stairs, one of the awls relaxed his grasp on the case's side handle and it slid off, falling to the ground. The case's housing broke open and objects spewed out, including several scrolls, a large book with a lock restricting the pages, and a fairly long dagger. "Wait, I'm familiar with both the book and the sword. They are normally at my father's place. He's been devoting a lot of time lately to reading that book." "And what is the purpose of the blade?" "It's for, yeah, I read about it in my father's library a long time ago, it's used for the rite when when...no!" Daito's eyes abruptly opened as he realized what the intention of the visit could be. He made a hasty descent down the trunk, losing his balance and slipping off several times. Drom pursued him blindly. "Hey! Dai, what is it tell me!" "Come on Drom! We have to hurry before it's too late." They
Needle-like pain reverberated across her skull. She lost her orientation, the world began spinning. As she tried to straighten to her feet another powerful blow landed across her frame, knocking the air out of her lungs, sending her spinning and spiraling across the floor. She collided with the wall, breaking her momentum. Jrue swung his twin blades with malicious intent. Though it wasn’t him succumbing to all those terrifying blows they were so brutal that he felt the impact of his raw strength. Before his blades could gain momentum he was rudely picked off the ground with an inhumane tackle. He was driven to the wall, the impact so violent it pushed the bricks out of position. Once he was pinned to the wall a flurry of punches started coming his way. The iron-like knuckles dug into his face, he felt like a hammer pounding his cheeks. His mouth filled with blood. The relentless attacks were halted by a deafening sound of a metal bar striking Tyndale’s skull. It seemed to have less
“A paralytic Poison. I see I taught you well my son…” “Don’t you ever dare call me that again!” He picked up his right arm and slit his wrist across, doing the same to his left hand. Jrue wanted him to suffer. He wanted him to bleed to death knowing that he was powerless, unable to do anything about it and save himself. He left him outside and limped back into the house. All the soldiers guarding the house had evacuated, deployed to handle the uprising of the slaves in the mines, giving the two siblings all the time they needed to execute duties assigned to them by Anato Strider as part of their escape plan. He managed to reach the room where the fight had begun. He shook her sister to wake. “Lora, Lora! Wake up, it is done!” All Lora felt was an unrealistically powerful force driving her to the ground. She landed with a thud, her head bouncing off the moldy floor. Needle-like pain reverberated across her skull. She lost her orientation, the world began spinning. As she tried to s
Albert was unconcerned about her feelings. He spread the crinkled letter out on the table and began reading it aloud. "The official report. On the second day of the third week of the sixth moon of the year, the commander of the independent states arrived at Defectors State headquarters, where honorary State guard, Lora Deryleen, provided information on the whereabouts of the fugitive, ex-commander, and traitor to the States, Slejj. In the evening, the commander gathered an army to go over to make a stand. "What are you babbling about, is it a fantasy scenario you've been dreaming about?" "Come on...you of all people should know the report never lies," "You seriously can't be considering something this low Albert!," "I made a deal with fugitives Lora, fugitives you wanted to protect. now it seems like their crimes have caught up to them, and there is no way I can delay the inevitable," "You're not going to be able to accomplish it, Albert. We struck a deal!" "Lora...dear Lora, I
The kick was aimed at the shield. Tyndale pushed out the shield with his kick so violently that it broke the teeth submerged into the metal. As the shield rolled on the mud with the teeth sticking out of it, Jericho shrieked in pain. Daito finally came to, getting to his feet just in time before the blast shot the Vurhan's entire face off. He charged forward with a blast of his own. Tyndale reverted his attention towards him which left him exposed to the mercy of the beast. Another swipe of the claws ripped up a shred of his skin, allowing blood to run over his chest. His muscular arms pushed Daito back onto the ground once more. He kicked the vurhan and took out its left knee with a blast of energy, rendering it immobile, momentarily. As the vurhan stumbled to the ground he grabbed its arm and pulled it back up, directing its head towards his punch. The two targets collided, leaving a bloody green stain on the Vurhan's face as it slid across the mud. Tyndale felt a severe force pus
"I made a deal with fugitives Lora, fugitives you wanted to protect. now it seems like their crimes have caught up to them, and there is no way I can delay the inevitable," "You're not going to be able to accomplish it, Albert. We struck a deal!" "Lora...dear Lora, I mean, come on, you knew what you were up to. We all knew this make-believe family you built wasn't going to last." "Albert, you're a jerk!" "Let's not talk about that princess. I'm aware of your darkest secrets!" "Wait... What secret?" He moved closer to her face, leaning in. Her stomach turned at the smell of his alcoholic breath. "You think I don't know about your little secret, Deryleen... you're not from around here, are you?" "You're not selling it Albert...get out of here." Lora bumped shoulders with him as she walked into her quarters. "Get out of my quarters now!!!" "... According to the second official report, Lora Deryleen and Alicia Iko captured the previous commander of the independent nations and we
Alicia dazed in a similar trance. She looked on as her apparently dead little brother reaped his swords and whirled them, chopping off delegates arms and legs. At one point he arced his head and caught sight of her, but ventured on with his slaughter as if she wasn't even there, as if he had no clue who she was. Reene and the others tapped them out of their stupor as they pulled out their swords. Alicia began galloping straight towards Drom, and Lora headed for Deryleen. Before they could both reach their intended targets the rest of the faction popped up under the teleportation circle and dropped to the arena, jumping straight into the action. Outside the castle, the intense battle raged on. The army of undead knights fought relentlessly like they had nothing to lose, mostly because they didn't. They overpowered the knights trying to secure the castle and fell to their blades, most of them cowardly retreating. The vurhans continued their orchestra, by then the whole city had awoken
"You know the truth is I was never your brother you simpleton! I was never your brother!" "... Wha... What did I ever do to you brother?" "NOTHING! And that is why I despise you. You never did anything for anyone, only cared about yourself. Using others to get what you wanted... Using me to become the commander!" Slejj coughed up a couple of times before speaking. "What in the hell are you talking about?" "I do not need to explain myself to you! Have you ever heard of Enkai, the forest deity who supposedly guarded the gates against crossers? Protected the Independent States from the world outside, especially vurhans." Slejj stared back in discomfort as a response. "Well, do you remember the day we were on the battlefield, fighting off the hoards of vurhans? I was the one who called on to him. I corrupted him with the help of some new friends I made. Using the power I made it turn against us... It killed and devoured those soldiers, and it was also to devour you! But I didn't pla
Fear was creeping in and Jrue was re-evaluating his options. A retreat would seem reasonable at that point. Lora had been completely taken out of the equation. “Well! I am Waiting!” Tyndale barked, his voice full of excitement. Jrue charged towards him. He wasn’t that good of a fighter in tight spaces but give him an open field and he would perform his acrobatic stunts that surprisingly packed a punch. He sought to tilt the odds to his advantage by taking him to an open field, and there was only one way he saw how. Running full steam ahead he tackled Tyndale and they both burst through the window, shattering the glass and falling three from a height three stories high. There was no object below to cushion their landing, so they sprawled to the hard ground. Jrue landed on his chest, breaking a bone or two. Tyndale landed on the shards of glass. They dug into his back, yet he seemed not to feel irritated by the pain. Before he could get up Jrue rushed over to him and impaled his leg w
